My issue with carry-on is that I often travel alone, so after I get through security I sit down for a coffee, set up my laptop while I wait till it's time for the boarding gate. But then I need the restroom, so I have to pack up everything and drag it all to the restroom, and it just feels like a major expedition. I just find it more relaxing to check a bag, then I'm free to relax, and just carry a small backpack.
Carry-on only is liberating. I did a two-week trip including a week in Europe with just a roll aboard and a computer bag. All the reasons given, plus on the event of flight disruptions, airlines can rebook you on short notice alternatives if you are not checking a bag. More than once, I got “go straight to the gate” rebooks that would not have been possible with checked bags.
My carry on is exactly the correct size...except for the wheels! But luckily the wheels are quick release and easily come off, so when I was asked to put it in the sizer recently, I popped the wheels off and happily fit it into the sizer! Plus it's actually convertible with into a full suitcase if I need it!
YES. No one ever talks about how awful clamshells are! They also reduce packing space. And for some reason I always see people saying they're putting their souvenirs in a packable duffel. No!! They will get destroyed if they're anything but fabric. Souvenirs go in the carry-on. Dirty clothes go in the duffel to check in.
@@fillhixx a sensible option for liquids, as you can't put liquid souvenirs in carry-on (unless you limit yourself to tiny bottles/jars and ditch a lot of your toiletries to make room).
I just learned that yesterday when i bought a new carryone not clamshell. Sooo easy to pack and seems to hold more. Go figure. Also soft sided and weighs 3lb less.
For any Americans visiting Europe, traveling light with carry-on only makes soooo much more sense than checked bags. First, for many Americans, a flight to most cities in Europe will involve 2 and often 3 legs, so 2 or 3 opportunities for a checked bag to go missing. If you are using any of the budget European airlines on your trip, they are very strict about size and weight limits, which are typically lower than US airlines. Carry-on only actually pays off more once you leave the airport. Only having a small backpack or purse and carry-on back when walking down the street, taking the train or bus, or fitting in small elevators makes all the difference. If you've never traveled outside the US before, the journey between the airport and hotel is very different, and lugging a big bag, or even worse 2 bags, is a pretty awful experience. I used to live in Lisbon, near the airport, so I saw plenty of regret watching people (almost always Americans) struggling with way more luggage than they needed. Also important to remember that no one gives a $hit what you're wearing. You don't need multiple outfits, shoes, etc... dress comfortably, and if you need an umbrella, rain jacket, or something like that, just buy it at your destination. Don't pack for what "might" happen. Final tip; leave your hair dryer, curling irons, etc... at home. They won't work here anyway.
I just did my first trip without checking a bag and had a typical Samsonite carry on bag and a small backpack. It was a heavenly experience to sail past all the lineups and will never check a bag again. I paid a few dollars to have laundry done half way through and used the minimal space as an excuse to not buy more useless souvenirs - lol!
Some good tips there. Thanks. Just made a trip to Hawaii. Having only carry on also allows you to be mobile. For example, I stayed 1 night at the Ritz Carlton Waikiki, checked out and walked down to the Hale Koa with my carry on and checked in. Very convenient. Also, if there is a problem with your flight, and is delayed or cancelled it’s much easier to get rebooked or catch another flight when you dont have checked bags. ❤
Just to add a few important points. Don't bring carryon items onboard you are not able to lift into the overhead bins, flight attendants are not going to lift your bags for you. The carryon limit is "one carryon item" and "one personal item". If you bring two items, one (the personal item) must be placed under the seat in front of you. So, please don't bring an additional item that won't fit under the seat in front of you, or if you don't want to sacrifice legroom for a second item. Oversize items such as guitars count as one full size carryon item, so please don't bring a guitar and a roll aboard bag and expect to bring both on the plane.
@@autumnatlas7467 Everything "counts". So, if you have two items, one must fit under the seat in front of you. Your instrument should fit in the overhead bin, not all planes have closets for storage. Airlines will try to acommodate most musical instruments onboard the aircraft because they are fragile, but it is not always possible. So please be sure your instrument is in a rugged case.
@@autumnatlas7467 Should not be a problem on most airlines, provided your backpack will fit under the seat in front of you. Some airlines do charge for carryon items though.
I pack a 32l rucksack in what i guess is a fairly minimalist way then put it under the seat in front. I only use the lockers if the seating requires it - quicker for me and more room for others. The key is linen and wool clothes. Clothes make up the bulk of luggage but if you use clothes that take days or weeks to get dirty, you can pack just underwear and under layers and travel super light. Recommend!
the carry on and dirty duffel is how I always do it, it is what my parents always did so I just kept doing it like that. they did a lot of travelling, it was required in the work my father did.
Marshall's, TJMaxx, and Nordstrom Rack all have well-stocked luggage sections and it's very educational to put bags that are all nominally 21" or 22" next to each other and ask yourself who's telling the truth - they are wildly different in size in real life.
Dirty Duffle version 2: Leave behind old clothes to make room. I take my well worn comfy sneakers for a last spin, leave behind and buy new ones when I get home. That open space is the souvenir space. Same goes for my husband’s white undershirts/socks etc.
Yes I do the same, the clothes i am giving to charity shops i wear and leave behind its great for a lighter bag but my friends think its hilarious nice to see someone else does it.
Yep. I do the same thing when I can. I take my worst and rattiest underwear, socks and jammies and dispose of them after I use them on my trip, instead of throwing them away here. Same ending for them but in a more efficient way.
I may be traveling soon with some family members who bring a carry on, a large personal item bag and the biggest (checked) suitcases I’ve ever seen. I’m going to try to get them to watch your videos because we can’t do the kind of travel I’m planning with all that stuff. You’re very helpful and persuasive. Wish me luck.
I just got home last night from the US, and was surprised how many people put both their main carry on and personal item in the overhead bin so they had full leg room. Lol. Sorry but I don't go for that anymore, and if that practice is taking up a space for my carry on, I'm the one who will move it/cram it to make room for mine. I don't have the patience for stuff like that anymore. One time there was an announcement saying all backpacks had to be under the seat but mine didn't fit and needed to be in overhead bin. I saw two backpacks up there already, so when a flight attendance called me out I said what about those people who put their backpacks up there? 🥴 Then she had to relent and let me put it up there.
MAIL CLOTHES/SHOES-BOOTS to your destination !!!! 10 years ago on a YT vid got this amazing advice (for US Travel using our Post Office) ); I flew for a 10 day visit to Minneapolis, Minnesota in December and mailed a large box of hats, gloves, boots, . . .) to Best Western I was staying at, and day before I left to fly back home went to Post Office there. Best $50 I ever spent ($25. each way) !!!!!!!!

Last year I replaced my worn out large checked bag size suitcase with a clam shell and I agree about the disadvantage of needing to open the entire bag in the middle. I definitely would NOT want this for a carry on size bag as it would be much harder to organize (and with the much more limited space good organization is a must).
I think there's been a shift in carryon preferences recently. A few years back, it appeared that the hardshell was taking over at the airports I went through. It kinda struck me a few weeks ago when i was on several layovers that, without a doubt, the soft bags have made a comeback. I was also caught in that "global IT" event back in july so i had PLENTY of time to gaze about during the downtime in MSP.
Yes most international airlines have a 7kg limit. The extra weight of wheels and such explains why the real pros use travel packs like an Osprey Porter 46.
Having traveled *a lot* for *many* years, I knew most of the content in this episode, sometimes learning the hard way. However, the "dirty duffel trick" is a great idea. Instead of that trick, I used the limited size of my carry-on luggage as an excuse not to buy souvenirs.

It's all very well saying 'check your airline's size rules' but if you fly budget to different destinations you'll probably travel with several different airlines, all having slightly different size rules. I wish they would work together to have standard carryon & under seat size rules. A 'banana' bag is ideal for easy & secure access to documents & much more. Worn crossbody, so hands-free. Uniqlo's at around 15€ are pretty spacious. More masculine styles also available.
Thank you, very helpful. Re souvenirs: i’ve been really fortunate with getting away with bringing them all stuffed in a large tote bag, hung over the shoulder. They always just look down at my carry-on, scan my passport then usher me in. It helps that usually have a long shawl on my shoulder that “conceals” the bag.
I pretty much always do carry on. There is often a place to do laundry when you travel, like the hotel or Airbnb you're staying at, so you can pack less clothes even for a long trip.

Some carry-on manufacturers don’t include the roller in their dimensions, just the “box”. If rollers don’t come off, measure your luggage by yourself. Also, don’t forget to NOT have both carry-on and personal fully packed ! Companies can ask you to prove that all your stuff sticks in the carry-on, that must close AND always respect dimensions, including weight if there’s a limit. If not, they’ll let you no other option than register your carry-on and have your personal as a carry-on. Or leave some stuff behind… Issue mostly seen in Europe in the last 10 years, but my mother in law recently had this issue with Air Canada and I personally witnessed it with Air Transat. So be aware, and always check the company general conditions before traveling.
My problem with carry on travel is, videos never address that people with neck, back, shoulder problems, short people, some older people, people with balance problems will have difficulty lifting a heavy bag over their heads to put it in and out of the overhead bin. The crew isn't allowed to help. I think that some content creators (not this channel) also imply they are "better" and "smarter" than people who check a bag. When I take a domestic flight in a country that has baggage shipping, like Japan, I tend to go personal item only, and check the carry-on. My goal is to check a bag, and carry only a personal item on board.
Great tips. I have also left my clothes behind (South America & Eastern Europe) They were quality clothes, but clothes that no longer fit into my "333" season. And after a QM2 cruise & Norway I mailed my clothes home (after laundry) Now to watch the liquids video ~
I only have top opening luggage. Costco is now selling a delsey hardside top open, but it's smaller than a 22". I have to go to Asia to get hardside top open luggage. I bought a top open hardshell case that is 11"×11"×22". It's square and won't fit in the sizer, but overall, the measurement is smaller than 22×14×9. I wouldn't recommend it. Pushing it fast topples it. Not as sturdy went pushed as one with a 14" base. They've never stopped me from boarding, but maybe one day...?
What a nice channel! I love lightweight packing and always did travel carry-on only when travelling alone. Now, as a familiy, we have a huge checked suitcase, but at least my lightweight travel experience keeps it down to only one suitcase for all of us. 😅
Carry on is a MUST when travelling in Eutope. A lot of hotels and B&B's don't have elevators or the streets will be cobblestone. A suitcase you can carry is a necessity!!
Just got back from a short vacation. I had a small carryon with the size posted by the airline ,yet a lot of people came on with way bigger suit cases and very stuffed back bags . So it’s still a big issue and the company is not following the rules.
Flying around Australia the carry-on weight allowance is 7kg and that includes both items. They do weigh at the gate. I actually prefer to check in a suitcase and fly with just a handbag as the wait time at the baggage carousels isn’t that bad, even in Sydney.
Canada: weight restrictions apply here too. You can buy the two most common TSA lock keys; also there is an easy zipper attack making locks pretty much useless. I don't use them, but I never leave my bag alone in the airport.
The first ting I do with a new suitcase is scuff and dirty it up as badly as I can without ruining it. I got that advice the first time I traveled to the US and I decided that it also makes sense when travelling to safe places to make your expensive things look as worthless as you can
definitely some great points! I personally prefer backpacking, and I understand it's not for everyone for various reasons, but places like Europe with uneven ground surfaces and tight stairwells or elevators, backpacks for me are great! pacsafe or like brands are fantastic. less items is so much better and you don't have to haul it around, if it doesn't fit you probably don't need it. for liquids I can fit all toiletries in a bag I got off amazon, you can use bar shampoo or dry shampoo so you don't have the space and weight of liquid, toiletries add more weight than you think. bring shower sandals if you stay in hostels, pac towels for weight and space. I managed to bring all carry on to car camp in Iceland, it is possible!
The personal item under the seat in front, is an issue for me. I'm 6'-3". I'm not that tall but, the leg and space for my feet is very important in my airplane comfort. I get annoyingly leg & feet squirmy after 15 minutes without that room.
I managed 8 weeks in Europe with a backpack that fitted under the seat. It's easy to buy and discard toiletries and even teeshirts and socks as needed.
Do any of your videos address the problem of liquid containers needing to be in small amounts e.g below 100 ml. Last time i flew out of Australia the toiletries i had put into small bottles and travel containers were not allowed through in my carry-on. The only items allowed had to be branded small items.
Carry-on travel is the best way. I travelled through Spain, France and Italy for 6 weeks in winter and the only thing I regret was packing 2 or 3 items that took up too much space
Compression cubes work well for bulky items, such as sweaters. They press the air out of them, reducing the size by a third (roughly). I jave Gonex cubes from Amazon, they are cheap and work well.
Im going to try the 3x3x3 packing in a couple weeks when we fly to Italy. I think we’ll just buy a duffle there to put in all the dirty clothing because I know I’ll be purchasing handbags, belts, etc!
I just got the Travel Pro lightweight carry on case and I love that it closes at the top and how light it is but an issue with packing super light is those of us who are obese, our clothing is just larger! I think every youtuber who offers information about traveling light seems very petite. It's extremely frustrating. I gained weight after 50 & of course I'm trying to lose but in the meantime, my clothes are larger. This has to be an issue for others also?
I am plus size and I travel with a backpack only plus a big purse. I found that clothing material is what makes a difference. I know I can’t take jeans. Most of what I wear is light weight material when traveling. If winter traveling I do layers. It is harder packing as a plus size person for sure.

I'm sort of one of those people who wants to have anything possible I might need. Trying to get beyond that. I have chronic pain issues and learned on a recent trip that the lighter the better for sure. My younger sister and I took a 3.5 week trip and she had a very light carry on, I had a 25 inch case and she very kindly mostly handled it. I learned a lot from her. That's so cool you travel with only a backpack!
So I’m not heavy, but this may help. I always carry on only because I don’t trust my (precious, precious 😂) stuff not to get lost… I basically have 2 base layers (long line sports bra/tank and light leggings or biker shorts) for the trip and swap out what I wear on top. I’m from Arizona so it doesn’t work in hot places where you’re always sweating, but in cooler places it’s great. If the garments get any funk and I can swap out or do a sink wash if needed. Since they’re like base layers, wrinkles don’t matter. Currently doing this up in Canada (🍁 hello from Banff!) and it’s helped me bring SO much less! May not work for everyone, but it’s been good to me for several trips now.

I live in Anchorage, Ak, I dislike hot places so would only travel off season to cooler places....Shoulder seasons can be awkward when you're not sure what the weather will be but in the past I've brought 2 warm shirts when I didn't need 2. I learned 1 will be enough with a light jacket.I found a couple t shirts from Eddie Bauer that are supposed to be able to last longer without odor. I mostly wear black / gray anyway so that's another thing I just recently decided will allow me to bring less. Oh, Banff is great! Went as a kid and still remember it.
My last trip, I put my dirty used clothes into a box from the post office, mailed them home and used my carry-on for my souveniers and stuff that would be harder to replace if lost.
I have one of those chunky hard sided carryons and it’s def difficult to lift overhead. Tempted by a lighter soft sided one, with a rain cover I can throw on if needed
Bags that open from the top work best with clothing compression sacks. I pack pants in one, underwear in another, etc. Without those, everything is a jumbled mess the first time i dig through the luggage looking for something at the bottom.
My bag cost me $3 for a small bag on wheels, if it gets scratched up, who cares. Maybe it is ratty enough, no theif in his right mind would think there is anything of value in it... And the real secret is, there probably isn't! I pack only the essentials that may not be available where I am going, and what I will need that 1st day. My souvineers are usually clothes, and maybe, folkart jewelry. And I love the dirty duffel idea for on the way home, just in case! Thank you!
My wife & I have been to more than 40 countries, on every continent except Antarctica, usually for 3-4 weeks per trip, & we have *never* used anything other than carryon. You don’t need a new outfit twice a day! Unless you’re, say, on a cruise where you see the same people day after day, no one will know (or especially, care) that you wore that same (clean) outfit yesterday - any why would you care that *they* cared? An exception is, say, a business trip where you need a new outfit every day, but even then a person could cut down on what they bring, if you think about it. Every country has a means of doing laundry - learn what it is, & wash or dry clean your clothes just like you’d do at home! Airbnb-type accommodations often have laundry machines. So do many hotels. Many countries do not have North American-style tumble driers, but hanging most clothes works just fine. I bring a thin rope & a handful of clothes pins for just that purpose - if there’s no clothes rack, tie it between 2 chairs, leave for the day, & return to clean, dry clothes. Plus, having only one fairly small bag means you’re mobile - you’re leaving the airport while all the rest are waiting at the baggage carousel. And you’re not limited to expensive taxis - you can take your case onto public transit, etc. MAJOR CAVEAT: not everyone can travel like we do, but it is possible to get by with far less than many people think necessary (goes for life too 😜)
My solution is to never fly anywhere. I had to do it a lot when I was still working, and it got progressively worse, and exponentially more aggravating over time. Since I retired in 2018 I haven’t stepped foot in an airport, and I definitely do not miss it. I have plenty of time to drive wherever I’m going, and have no interest in going overseas anymore. Been there, done that, got the tee shirts.
I never understood why clamshell became a thing. With the advent of hard shell , why didn’t they just keep with the top opening style like soft side has had forever?
Internal American flight seem to let people with all sorts of crap they shouldn't. Outside of the US mainly, people are restricted to the proper size and weight of carry on. So we don't normally have this problem.

If you want the so called convenience of “ Carry On “ then I am starting to think Airlines should start to charge for that Convenience same way they charge for so called preferred seats . Many people with Carry On just push the envelope of common sense and don’t care about their fellow travellers it’s that simple . My last trip on Air Canada and deliberately being the last to board required a 25 min wait while the fiasco of carry ons took place, by the time I was able to get seated the Flight Attendant looked like she was close to a melt down .
"No shame." I disagree. XD I feel like get punished for other people's poor luggage choices. I use a backpack for a carry-on and am forced to put it under the seat because people's oversized carry-ons take up just a *bit* too much room for me to fit it in. Or I really have to really wedge it in. But because I use a backpack, I can do this without gate checking. I'm a little bitter and wish I've seen airlines enforce the carry-on size. :p
Are you able to travel internationally with just a carry-on? When I say carry-on, I don't mean those mini suitcases that only fit in overhead storage and not below the seat. My carry-on has fit under the seat of EVERY carrier's equipment for the last 30 years, to include regional carriers with small equipment. I will not, under any circumstances use overhead storage. Why? A) some jackwagon has already taken MY storage area above my head BEFORE I even get on. B) I will not let my carry-on get out of my immediate and more secure under seat storage. C) I have watched my wife struggle through airports and planes with one of those "mini suitcases" that cary the added risk of the dreaded "gate check". D) I am getting tired of the boarding process being slowed by some jackwagon fighting to shove his or her "mini suitcase" in overhead storage , then have to deal with the other bag that goes below the seat in front of them. I board, walk down the aisle, toss my CARRY-ON on one of the seats next to me (if unoccupied), immediately sit down out of the way and then store my CARRY-ON under the seat in front of me.
Can you suggest carry-on for kids 9 years old and up? We took our first family trip last summer. I spent so much on luggages fee that I promised myself to do better and get them each their own carry-on. With 4 kids, it's a must. I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Then maybe go to the restroom first, and you can also get a backpack so you can carry it on your back which is much easier.

I have often rolled liquor bottles in towels and pack that in the middle of my soft shell backpack/suitcase. Haven’t lost one yet!

I just learned that yesterday when i bought a new carryone not clamshell. Sooo easy to pack and seems to hold more. Go figure. Also soft sided and weighs 3lb less.

For any Americans visiting Europe, traveling light with carry-on only makes soooo much more sense than checked bags. First, for many Americans, a flight to most cities in Europe will involve 2 and often 3 legs, so 2 or 3 opportunities for a checked bag to go missing. If you are using any of the budget European airlines on your trip, they are very strict about size and weight limits, which are typically lower than US airlines. Carry-on only actually pays off more once you leave the airport. Only having a small backpack or purse and carry-on back when walking down the street, taking the train or bus, or fitting in small elevators makes all the difference. If you've never traveled outside the US before, the journey between the airport and hotel is very different, and lugging a big bag, or even worse 2 bags, is a pretty awful experience. I used to live in Lisbon, near the airport, so I saw plenty of regret watching people (almost always Americans) struggling with way more luggage than they needed. Also important to remember that no one gives a $hit what you're wearing. You don't need multiple outfits, shoes, etc... dress comfortably, and if you need an umbrella, rain jacket, or something like that, just buy it at your destination. Don't pack for what "might" happen. Final tip; leave your hair dryer, curling irons, etc... at home. They won't work here anyway.
I just did my first trip without checking a bag and had a typical Samsonite carry on bag and a small backpack. It was a heavenly experience to sail past all the lineups and will never check a bag again. I paid a few dollars to have laundry done half way through and used the minimal space as an excuse to not buy more useless souvenirs - lol!
Some good tips there. Thanks. Just made a trip to Hawaii. Having only carry on also allows you to be mobile. For example, I stayed 1 night at the Ritz Carlton Waikiki, checked out and walked down to the Hale Koa with my carry on and checked in. Very convenient. Also, if there is a problem with your flight, and is delayed or cancelled it’s much easier to get rebooked or catch another flight when you dont have checked bags. ❤
Just to add a few important points. Don't bring carryon items onboard you are not able to lift into the overhead bins, flight attendants are not going to lift your bags for you. The carryon limit is "one carryon item" and "one personal item". If you bring two items, one (the personal item) must be placed under the seat in front of you. So, please don't bring an additional item that won't fit under the seat in front of you, or if you don't want to sacrifice legroom for a second item. Oversize items such as guitars count as one full size carryon item, so please don't bring a guitar and a roll aboard bag and expect to bring both on the plane.

@@autumnatlas7467 Everything "counts". So, if you have two items, one must fit under the seat in front of you. Your instrument should fit in the overhead bin, not all planes have closets for storage. Airlines will try to acommodate most musical instruments onboard the aircraft because they are fragile, but it is not always possible. So please be sure your instrument is in a rugged case.
Please be sure to check with the airline you are traveling on before you go to avoid surprises and upsets...

I pack a 32l rucksack in what i guess is a fairly minimalist way then put it under the seat in front. I only use the lockers if the seating requires it - quicker for me and more room for others. The key is linen and wool clothes. Clothes make up the bulk of luggage but if you use clothes that take days or weeks to get dirty, you can pack just underwear and under layers and travel super light. Recommend!
the carry on and dirty duffel is how I always do it, it is what my parents always did so I just kept doing it like that.

Alaska Airlines always has us put the wheels on top and facing the aisle. The bins are smaller at the outside of the plane.
Marshall's, TJMaxx, and Nordstrom Rack all have well-stocked luggage sections and it's very educational to put bags that are all nominally 21" or 22" next to each other and ask yourself who's telling the truth - they are wildly different in size in real life.

Dirty Duffle version 2: Leave behind old clothes to make room. I take my well worn comfy sneakers for a last spin, leave behind and buy new ones when I get home. That open space is the souvenir space. Same goes for my husband’s white undershirts/socks etc.
Sure, if you travel once every two years, or are a marathoner going through shoes every few months. I don't throw away shoes that often.

Yes I do the same, the clothes i am giving to charity shops i wear and leave behind its great for a lighter bag but my friends think its hilarious nice to see someone else does it.
Yep. I do the same thing when I can. I take my worst and rattiest underwear, socks and jammies and dispose of them after I use them on my trip, instead of throwing them away here. Same ending for them but in a more efficient way.

I may be traveling soon with some family members who bring a carry on, a large personal item bag and the biggest (checked) suitcases I’ve ever seen. I just got home last night from the US, and was surprised how many people put both their main carry on and personal item in the overhead bin so they had full leg room. Lol. Sorry but I don't go for that anymore, and if that practice is taking up a space for my carry on, I'm the one who will move it/cram it to make room for mine. I don't have the patience for stuff like that anymore. One time there was an announcement saying all backpacks had to be under the seat but mine didn't fit and needed to be in overhead bin. I saw two backpacks up there already, so when a flight attendance called me out I said what about those people who put their backpacks up there? 🥴 Then she had to relent and let me put it up there.

MAIL CLOTHES/SHOES-BOOTS to your destination !!!! 10 years ago on a YT vid got this amazing advice (for US Travel using our Post Office) ); I flew for a 10 day visit to Minneapolis, Minnesota in December and mailed a large box of hats, gloves, boots, . . .) to Best Western I was staying at, and day before I left to fly back home went to Post Office there. Best $50 I ever spent ($25. each way) !!!!!!!!
I carry one bag and wear my heaviest clothes. I do mail home my purchases as it is cheaper than paying for checked luggage.

Last year I replaced my worn out large checked bag size suitcase with a clam shell and I agree about the disadvantage of needing to open the entire bag in the middle. I definitely would NOT want this for a carry on size bag as it would be much harder to organize (and with the much more limited space good organization is a must).
I think there's been a shift in carryon preferences recently. A few years back, it appeared that the hardshell was taking over at the airports I went through. It kinda struck me a few weeks ago when i was on several layovers that, without a doubt, the soft bags have made a comeback. I was also caught in that "global IT" event back in july so i had PLENTY of time to gaze about during the downtime in MSP.
I wear a comfortable jacket to travel, with four zip pockets which allow me to take 8 (!) paperback books, which I usually discard after reading.

Yes most international airlines have a 7kg limit. The extra weight of wheels and such explains why the real pros use travel packs like an Osprey Porter 46.

Having traveled *a lot* for *many* years, I knew most of the content in this episode, sometimes learning the hard way. However, the "dirty duffel trick" is a great idea. Instead of that trick, I used the limited size of my carry-on luggage as an excuse not to buy souvenirs.

It's all very well saying 'check your airline's size rules' but if you fly budget to different destinations you'll probably travel with several different airlines, all having slightly different size rules. I wish they would work together to have standard carryon & under seat size rules.
A 'banana' bag is ideal for easy & secure access to documents & much more. Worn crossbody, so hands-free. Uniqlo's at around 15€ are pretty spacious. More masculine styles also available.

Re souvenirs: i’ve been really fortunate with getting away with bringing them all stuffed in a large tote bag, hung over the shoulder. They always just look down at my carry-on, scan my passport then usher me in. It helps that usually have a long shawl on my shoulder that “conceals” the bag.
I pretty much always do carry on. There is often a place to do laundry when you travel, like the hotel or Airbnb you're staying at, so you can pack less clothes even for a long trip.

Some carry-on manufacturers don’t include the roller in their dimensions, just the “box”. If rollers don’t come off, measure your luggage by yourself.
Also, don’t forget to NOT have both carry-on and personal fully packed ! Companies can ask you to prove that all your stuff sticks in the carry-on, that must close AND always respect dimensions, including weight if there’s a limit. If not, they’ll let you no other option than register your carry-on and have your personal as a carry-on. Or leave some stuff behind…
Issue mostly seen in Europe in the last 10 years, but my mother in law recently had this issue with Air Canada and I personally witnessed it with Air Transat.
So be aware, and always check the company general conditions before traveling.

My problem with carry on travel is, videos never address that people with neck, back, shoulder problems, short people, some older people, people with balance problems will have difficulty lifting a heavy bag over their heads to put it in and out of the overhead bin. The crew isn't allowed to help. I think that some content creators (not this channel) also imply they are "better" and "smarter" than people who check a bag. When I take a domestic flight in a country that has baggage shipping, like Japan, I tend to go personal item only, and check the carry-on. My goal is to check a bag, and carry only a personal item on board.

I only have top opening luggage. Costco is now selling a delsey hardside top open, but it's smaller than a 22".
I have to go to Asia to get hardside top open luggage.
I bought a top open hardshell case that is 11"×11"×22". It's square and won't fit in the sizer, but overall, the measurement is smaller than 22×14×9. I wouldn't recommend it. Pushing it fast topples it. Not as sturdy went pushed as one with a 14" base. They've never stopped me from boarding, but maybe one day...?

Now, as a familiy, we have a huge checked suitcase, but at least my lightweight travel experience keeps it down to only one suitcase for all of us. 😅
Carry on is a MUST when travelling in Eutope. A lot of hotels and B&B's don't have elevators or the streets will be cobblestone. A suitcase you can carry is a necessity!!
Just got back from a short vacation. I had a small carryon with the size posted by the airline ,yet a lot of people came on with way bigger suit cases and very stuffed back bags . So it’s still a big issue and the company is not following the rules.
Flying around Australia the carry-on weight allowance is 7kg and that includes both items. They do weigh at the gate. I actually prefer to check in a suitcase and fly with just a handbag as the wait time at the baggage carousels isn’t that bad, even in Sydney.
It's only JetStar that weighs your bag - I've never had Virgin or Qantas weigh my carry on.
It would be interesting to know if I've just been lucky.
Canada: weight restrictions apply here too. You can buy the two most common TSA lock keys; also there is an easy zipper attack making locks pretty much useless. I don't use them, but I never leave my bag alone in the airport.

The first ting I do with a new suitcase is scuff and dirty it up as badly as I can without ruining it. I got that advice the first time I traveled to the US and I decided that it also makes sense when travelling to safe places to make your expensive things look as worthless as you can
definitely some great points! I personally prefer backpacking, and I understand it's not for everyone for various reasons, but places like Europe with uneven ground surfaces and tight stairwells or elevators, backpacks for me are great! pacsafe or like brands are fantastic. less items is so much better and you don't have to haul it around, if it doesn't fit you probably don't need it. for liquids I can fit all toiletries in a bag I got off amazon, you can use bar shampoo or dry shampoo so you don't have the space and weight of liquid, toiletries add more weight than you think. bring shower sandals if you stay in hostels, pac towels for weight and space. I managed to bring all carry on to car camp in Iceland, it is possible!

The personal item under the seat in front, is an issue for me. I'm 6'-3". I'm not that tall but, the leg and space for my feet is very important in my airplane comfort. I get annoyingly leg & feet squirmy after 15 minutes without that room.
I hear ya brother, I'm 6'9". Just pull the bag toward you and stick your feet under the seat. I do it all the time, and don't have a problem.

I managed 8 weeks in Europe with a backpack that fitted under the seat. It's easy to buy and discard toiletries and even teeshirts and socks as needed.
Do any of your videos address the problem of liquid containers needing to be in small amounts e.g below 100 ml. Last time i flew out of Australia the toiletries i had put into small bottles and travel containers were not allowed through in my carry-on. The only items allowed had to be branded small items.
Carry-on travel is the best way. I travelled through Spain, France and Italy for 6 weeks in winter and the only thing I regret was packing 2 or 3 items that took up too much space

Do u have a video on packing for cold fall weather vacay where bulky items needed (sweaters, coats, workout, walking boots, dressy).
Compression cubes work well for bulky items, such as sweaters. They press the air out of them, reducing the size by a third (roughly). I jave Gonex cubes from Amazon, they are cheap and work well.
Im going to try the 3x3x3 packing in a couple weeks when we fly to Italy. I think we’ll just buy a duffle there to put in all the dirty clothing because I know I’ll be purchasing handbags, belts, etc!

I just got the Travel Pro lightweight carry on case and I love that it closes at the top and how light it is but an issue with packing super light is those of us who are obese, our clothing is just larger! I think every youtuber who offers information about traveling light seems very petite. It's extremely frustrating. I gained weight after 50 & of course I'm trying to lose but in the meantime, my clothes are larger. This has to be an issue for others also?
I am plus size and I travel with a backpack only plus a big purse. I found that clothing material is what makes a difference. I know I can’t take jeans. Most of what I wear is light weight material when traveling. If winter traveling I do layers. It is harder packing as a plus size person for sure.

So I’m not heavy, but this may help. I always carry on only because I don’t trust my (precious, precious 😂) stuff not to get lost… I basically have 2 base layers (long line sports bra/tank and light leggings or biker shorts) for the trip and swap out what I wear on top. I’m from Arizona so it doesn’t work in hot places where you’re always sweating, but in cooler places it’s great. If the garments get any funk and I can swap out or do a sink wash if needed. Since they’re like base layers, wrinkles don’t matter. Currently doing this up in Canada (🍁 hello from Banff!) and it’s helped me bring SO much less! May not work for everyone, but it’s been good to me for several trips now.

I live in Anchorage, Ak, I dislike hot places so would only travel off season to cooler places....Shoulder seasons can be awkward when you're not sure what the weather will be but in the past I've brought 2 warm shirts when I didn't need 2. I learned 1 will be enough with a light jacket.I found a couple t shirts from Eddie Bauer that are supposed to be able to last longer without odor. I mostly wear black / gray anyway so that's another thing I just recently decided will allow me to bring less. Oh, Banff is great! Went as a kid and still remember it.
My last trip, I put my dirty used clothes into a box from the post office, mailed them home and used my carry-on for my souveniers and stuff that would be harder to replace if lost.

They are measuring too and if your bag does not fit they will charge you to gate check it

Bags that open from the top work best with clothing compression sacks. I pack pants in one, underwear in another, etc. Without those, everything is a jumbled mess the first time i dig through the luggage looking for something at the bottom.
Just pack stuff in separate (plastic) bags inside the suitcase. One bag for shirts, one for underwear, etc.
@n1chr0me6 compression bags do that..but.. they also "compress" your clothing if you need that.
My bag cost me $3 for a small bag on wheels, if it gets scratched up, who cares. Maybe it is ratty enough, no theif in his right mind would think there is anything of value in it... And the real secret is, there probably isn't! I pack only the essentials that may not be available where I am going, and what I will need that 1st day. My souvineers are usually clothes, and maybe, folkart jewelry. And I love the dirty duffel idea for on the way home, just in case! Thank you!

My wife & I have been to more than 40 countries, on every continent except Antarctica, usually for 3-4 weeks per trip, & we have *never* used anything other than carryon. You don’t need a new outfit twice a day! Unless you’re, say, on a cruise where you see the same people day after day, no one will know (or especially, care) that you wore that same (clean) outfit yesterday - any why would you care that *they* cared? An exception is, say, a business trip where you need a new outfit every day, but even then a person could cut down on what they bring, if you think about it. Every country has a means of doing laundry - learn what it is, & wash or dry clean your clothes just like you’d do at home! Airbnb-type accommodations often have laundry machines. So do many hotels. Many countries do not have North American-style tumble driers, but hanging most clothes works just fine. I bring a thin rope & a handful of clothes pins for just that purpose - if there’s no clothes rack, tie it between 2 chairs, leave for the day, & return to clean, dry clothes. Plus, having only one fairly small bag means you’re mobile - you’re leaving the airport while all the rest are waiting at the baggage carousel. And you’re not limited to expensive taxis - you can take your case onto public transit, etc. MAJOR CAVEAT: not everyone can travel like we do, but it is possible to get by with far less than many people think necessary (goes for life too 😜)
My solution is to never fly anywhere. I had to do it a lot when I was still working, and it got progressively worse, and exponentially more aggravating over time. Since I retired in 2018 I haven’t stepped foot in an airport, and I definitely do not miss it. I have plenty of time to drive wherever I’m going, and have no interest in going overseas anymore. Been there, done that, got the tee shirts.

I never understood why clamshell became a thing. With the advent of hard shell , why didn’t they just keep with the top opening style like soft side has had forever?
Internal American flight seem to let people with all sorts of crap they shouldn't. Outside of the US mainly, people are restricted to the proper size and weight of carry on. So we don't normally have this problem.

I use a backpack for a carry-on and am forced to put it under the seat because people's oversized carry-ons take up just a *bit* too much room for me to fit it in. Or I really have to really wedge it in. But because I use a backpack, I can do this without gate checking. I'm a little bitter and wish I've seen airlines enforce the carry-on size. :p

Are you able to travel internationally with just a carry-on? When I say carry-on, I don't mean those mini suitcases that only fit in overhead storage and not below the seat. My carry-on has fit under the seat of EVERY carrier's equipment for the last 30 years, to include regional carriers with small equipment. I will not, under any circumstances use overhead storage. Why? A) some jackwagon has already taken MY storage area above my head BEFORE I even get on. B) I will not let my carry-on get out of my immediate and more secure under seat storage. C) I have watched my wife struggle through airports and planes with one of those "mini suitcases" that cary the added risk of the dreaded "gate check". D) I am getting tired of the boarding process being slowed by some jackwagon fighting to shove his or her "mini suitcase" in overhead storage , then have to deal with the other bag that goes below the seat in front of them. I board, walk down the aisle, toss my CARRY-ON on one of the seats next to me (if unoccupied), immediately sit down out of the way and then store my CARRY-ON under the seat in front of me.
