I also have Harbor Freight’s wool blanket. I learned the importance of the wool blanket spending a couple of winter months in the South Korean mountains near the DMZ. An “old timer” (he was 22) explained the importance of keeping a wool blanket with you all the time.
Such a great wool blanket and you just cannot beat the price! Sounds like it has served you well over the years! I have also heard a lot about the importance of carrying a wool blanket at all times. Thank you for taking the time to watch and share you experiences, Ken! -Dave
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your very kind, encouraging comment, my friend! I really appreciate that and I hope to talk with you again soon, Mick! -Dave
Just want to let you know how much I enjoy your videos, brother. They're always very informative, honest and pleasant to watch. Recently purchased the Lagom. Seeing you use it for a while and how much you love it, helped me to pull the trigger on it with confidence. Really enjoying it so far.
Hi Dave, excellent choices! Since I do not do videos yet, here are my five items: - Pathfinder Scorpion HD - 6” Ferro Rod - Pathfinder Canteen & cup - Bacho Lander saw - 7”x7” light weight tarp (can’t remember the name) Thanks for the tip on Harbor Freight wool blankets! Good to see you again!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by, David! Very nice to hear from you, my friend! I appreciate you sharing your outstanding list of gear and I think you would love the HB wool blanket! -Dave
I’m sure I have already commented on this video Dave my friend. I’ve just been binge watching all of your videos while I’m doing laundry. I can’t seem to get enough of them. You had some great choices in this when I was really impressed. God bless you. John
Thank you, Wade! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment! You are exactly right...the CT Velvicut Saddle axe is outstanding! You take care, too, Wade! -Dave
It is understandable that you would choose a FERRO rod to take with you but we hunter safety instructors teach new huntsman to take three ways to start a fire. We also give them the receipt for a fire engine, which burns for an 45 minutes at 8,000 feet. This is so they can make their own and stay alive. We show them to take a ferrotec rod, wind proof matches, and a butane lighter. We also give them the recipe for converting a regular”strike anywhere match” into a waterproof match.
Great choices Dave! I still have not purchased the Council Tool Saddle axe. AND I’ve never used a wool blanket. I’ll have to give one a try. They have always seemed too bulky to carry. Be blessed my friend. John
Thank you, John! It's great to hear from you, my friend! I think you would love both this CT Saddle axe and wool blanket. You are right, it takes some adjusting to carry but no problem! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, John! -Dave
I have similar items to yours . An Ontario RAT3 knife , a USGI canteen with lid and stove , an Estwing hatchet , an Exotac ferrorod , and two Indian made knockoffs of the Italian military wool blanket . I own much more gear of course . The Estwing is lighter than your Council axe , the difference in weight is made up by my inclusion of a Sierra saw . I sometimes wear a blanket match coat style , using a laundry bag pin as a brooch clasp . If you and I had to go with each others gear I don't think we would have much problem adjusting . Thanks for the video , friend .
That is an awesome list of gear, Victor, and I think you are exactly right - if we switched gear, there wouldn't be a huge learning curve. Sounds likes some excellent ways you use it all, too! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, my friend! It's very nice to hear from you! -Dave
Thank you, my friend! You just cannot go wrong with an LT Wright knife! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and leave your very nice comment! -Dave
I was not surprised at your choices until you got the the HF wool blanket. I've been to HF many times and I never saw one there. I'll have to take another look. Thanks for some great information Dave. Time is well spent here Dave.
Thank you for stopping by, my friend! Great to hear from you! The wool blankets are always tucked back with the moving items - moving carts and moving blankets. It also helps to ask a worker for one. I think you would love it! Hope the road it treating you well, brother! -Dave
Hello my outdoors friend, thanks for sharing this very informative video. You made some great gear selections. I agree with you. All the best to you. 🤗
Love your Vids My friend,i know I'm repeating myself but health is wealth.Your living the dream, isn't it amazing that the best things in life are free. Also I have very big hands triple X gloves and the handle on the LT.Wright knife looks very small.Lovely knife, great cooking set up.Be safe.👌
Great video Dave. Very good choices.I have a estwing double bit hatchet,OKC Rat 3 & 5, a Mora HD carbon. The pathfinder canteen cook set. Will be going by Harbor Freight for the wool blanket. Been using the UST ferro rod. I'M going to get a ferro rod from Nathan and trying to choose a LT Wright knife. I really enjoyed watching this video and have a great day. Thanks TENNESSEE
Thank you for the kind words, Jeff! Your Estwing double bit hatchet sounds awesome! Estwings are excellent axes, and your knives are no joke! I love ontario knives and not enough can be said about the Mora HD knives! You will absolutely love Nathan's ferro rods and any LT Wright you choose! When you purchase your Nathan4071 ferro rod, let him know that I sent you over. I really enjoy having you here, Jeff and consider myself lucky to have you as a viewer! -Dave
Great choice my friend. I have been following you for quite some time now and you’re choice of 5 items is straight forward dead on! Always fun watching your videos. Best regards -Yves

Thanks for your 5 Dave. I always value your choice of gear and have learned so much about different gear from your reviews and videos. I have the same blanket, but have only taken it to the woods with me once. I may have to try it again. Thsnks for sharing your 5 and why you take them!! Take care my friend, Lee
Thank you for taking the time to watch and your very nice, encouraging comment, Lee! It's great to hear from you, my friend! Thats great that you have the same blanket and I think you will definitely find some good uses for it! I appreciate you stopping by and say HI to the grandkids for me! -Dave
Very well said, my friend! Definitely something cool about a nice, USA-made, compact double bit saddle axe! Thank you for taking the time to stop by! -Dave
Yes! I know several people that own the Trail Boss and love it, as well! Nice price, too! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment! -Dave
Thank you for the kind words, Troy! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, my friend, and please let me know how you like the blanket! I know you are going to love it! -Dave
A great selection brother, each and everyone would, and could save your life. I hope everything is good your side of the pond. All is good this side, peace and love. Dave UK
Great to hear from you, Dave! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment! Everything is good here and I am very happy to hear that everything is good on your side, too! -Dave
Great list Dave. I agree with you.... Nathan sells some great ferro rods. I have tried some much more expencive ferro rods that don't perform as well. 4 directions bushcraft sells a great ferro rod aswell. Man I wish we had harbor freight in Canada. We would pay $80 for that blanket here. I would like to pick up 2 more blankets but can't get them at a reasonable price here. Great video Love that axe.
Thank you, my friend! I can understand not being able to get wool at a good price. All of my wool has either been purchased through Goodwill or Salvation Army and this cheap blanket at HF. There actually hasn't been a time that i didn't leave a 2nd hand store without a wool sweater! I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, brother! -Dave
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and leave your awesome comment, my friend! Nathan is a great guy with awesome ferro rods! The best in the business, IMHO. -Dave
You are going to love the Harbor Freight wool blanket, my friend! Keep me posted on how you like it when you pick one up! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment! -Dave
Great video Dave and I don't know why but your five items does not surprised me at all 😉 Knife and axe in a Nessmuk kind of style, a Nathan ferrorod, your trusty canteen kit and a good wool blanket 👍👌🙌👏
Thank you for the kind words, Laurent! It's great to hear from you, my friend! Have I become that predictable....hahaha! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by! -Dave
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your kind words, eric! Nice to hear from you, my friend and I appreciate you stopping by! The Nalgene Canteen is excellent! -Dave
I am glad I could be of some assistance, my friend, and it's great to hear that you are loving the Lagom! My absolute favorite! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your very nice, encouraging comment! -Dave
#1. Mora Companion, carbon steel. I like thin blades of about 4" length, and I even like how the cheap sheath clips to my pocket. #2. Jute twine... I dislike paracord, and bank line is great for trot lines but for an all around camping cordage, I prefer jute twine. It is strong, frizzes up to make great tinder, and it decomposes and can be left guilt-free. 3. Ferro rod, 'nuff said. 4. 40oz Kleen Kanteen with GSI cup. 5. Polish surplus 100% wool blanket that I sewed in half to make a sleep sack.
Nice list, Aaron! I enjoy the Mora Companion MG, very much, and you cannot go wrong with jute twine! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and provide your list of items for us! -Dave
Thank you, my friend! Yes, I knew a coffee lover like yourself would enjoy the "coffee pot and cup"..haha! Great to hear from you and I hope to talk with you again soon! -Dave
N\#1 my Pathfinder Scout KIT knife I made, #2 there Bottle Cook set ( have 2, one bottle I did swap out to a S.Steel Klean Kanteen to add the Life straw Filter system to bottle to drink from it, great for day Hikes), #3 MSR alpine 1.6L pot (Plastic Bowl fire fire Kit inside), #4 Silky Gomboy, and #5 pathfinder's Poncho/Tarp.
Sounds like an excellent setup you have there, my friend! I, too, carried the 1.6 alpine for a long time! You can fit so much gear in that thing! I used to keep my Emberlit stove right in it, as it fit perfectly. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and sharing your kit! -Dave
Should be able to find any GI canteen accessories like the stove, cup and lid at any surplus store like uscav or sportsman's guide. Probably not as good as the pathfinder brand but it certainly works well enough to get by
Like your Choices Dave. Mine would be very similar with the exception of the blanket. I would include my favorite tarp. I live in Texas so blankets aren't as critical as up north. Thank you for the video.
Thank you for watching, Scott! Yes, I was trying to fit a tarp in but was limited to 5 items..haha! I can understand how blankets aren't as critical in Texas. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and leave your excellent comment! -Dave
0:54 Pretty knife, yet , I prefer a finger guard on most BC knives. 1:52 We don't see these Type of axes alot in BC videos. its a beauty, indeed. 4:50 I agree, those bean bottles are awesome. Excellent selections
Hello Dave. Cool gear & like always very nicely done video. Even though I am not a bushcrafter We use just about the same/similar items. So to that effect I might just accept the universal tag on my favorite 5 items to take out to the out of doors. I will get to it as soon as I can get out. Thanks again my friend & its always nice to visit your channel. Take care my brother & keep enjoying the great out of doors.
Hey Marco! Thank you for the kind words, my friend! Please do accept the universal tag! I would be very curious of your 5 favorite bushcraft or outdoor items! I look forward to it and its always great to have you here, brother! -Dave
Yes, sir! I love Council Tool! A big goal of the company is to show that high quality, excellent axes can still be made right here in the USA! They are very nice people and take great pride in their work. Definitely check out this one or any of their other axes! I think you will love them, my friend! Even their non-Velvicut line of axes, like the Council Tool Boy's Axe, are outstanding! Keep me posted! -Dave
Thank you for watching, Victor! Welcome to the fun that is bushcraft/woodcraft/outdoors! It's great to have you, my friend! Please don't be a stranger! -Dave
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your nice comment, Carlos! I really appreciate that! Please take it easy, my friend, and stay safe with yet another power outage. -Dave
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, my friend! Yes, Nathan is awesome and his ferro rods are outstanding! Video on the Maplehouse knife coming soon! -Dave
Thank you, my friend! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and leave your nice comment! I can't get enough of the Council Tool Velvicut Saddle Axe! -Dave
Man is been ages since one of your videos has popped up Dave. Great stuff as always, I really want that axe. Actually I want all of those things hehe. I've been procrastinating over what stove set to get; I think since you did the review on the pathfinder bottle/stove/pack kit. Loooong time. Still very tempted by that one...
I am happy that you took the time to stop by and leave your awesome comment, my friend! I really appreciate the kind words! Are you referring to the kit I carry in the Condor H2O pouch? I don't own a pathfinder bottle but do have several kits that contain a bottle, stove and bag/pack. -Dave
Good to have you here for my video, Robert! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your excellent comment! I am partial to 01 but enjoy using A2, as well! -Dave
Great choices Dave. I really enjoy your content, and I also love the lagom bush knife! It's definitely one of my favorites. That, and my bark river auroa. Take care!
Thank you for the kind, encouraging comment! I really enjoy having you here and the Lagom is such an excellent knife! You take care, too, my friend! -Dave
Thank you for the kind words, my friend! I find the wool blankets back by the moving materials...they are mixed in with the carts and moving blankets. Try asking one of the employees next time you are there and they always have sales on them! As always, great to hear from you, brother! -Dave
I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video, Christine! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your very nice comment! It's great to hear from you and I hope to talk with you again soon, my friend! -Dave
The people who made the Velvicut should be proud of themselves. I am extremely picky when it comes to axe design, but his axe blew me away. I haven't been this amazed by an axe in forever.
My friend! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your nice comment! It's very nice to hear from you and I hope everything is going well in Vermont! I know the feeling of not needing another axe..haha! -Dave
Nathan4071 sent me over...Great video...I didn't know about the Harbor Freight blankets ...I will be sure to pick a few up..One for each car for winter driving ....Thank's
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your very nice comment, my friend! Nathan is a great guy! You will love the HF wool blankets and the price is excellent! Let me know how you like them! -Dave
My knife-and-axe Bushcraft items are: KNIFE-> HELLE GT AXE-> Council Tool Wood-Craft W/19" handle. If there are better quality Bushcraft tools I have yet to see them.
Hello, my friend! I would love to see a video on your 5 favorite bushcraft/outdoor items! Thank you for taking the time to stop by and I hope to talk with you again soon! -Dave
Thank you, john! I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by! I've own the Saddle Axe for over a year and I am still very much in love with it...haha! -Dave
Great choices Dave! What size of Nathan’s ferro rods do you use for your Lagom sheath? I’m definitely going to check out that harbor freight blanket. Having loads of fun with those knives you sent. That classic #2 is a carving machine! I wouldn’t baton with it though lol. Happy Adventures friend 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Hi Didier! It's very nice to hear from you, brother! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your very nice comment! All the best to you and your family too, my friend! -Dave
Great to hear from you, ric! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, my friend! My personal favorite type of steel is 01. Easy to sharpen and holds an excellent edge! Many people believe there are 'better' steels for knives but this one seems to work best for me and my purposes. Great question! -Dave
Your ferrorod is pretty large, but pretty worn out in the middle too - if you go on this way it will break long before time. Look up Mors Kochanski (R.I.P.) from Karamat Wilderness Ways, he showed how to throw sparks from the very end. I looked up Nathan4071's prices - 20US$ for a 6"x0,5" sounds fair, but still is 8-10 BIC-lighters. Your "wool blanket" is a moving blanket and not recommended for use as a bedding. A lot of customers complain about "a gasoline-type bad smell and sheds like crazy" - didn't you have any issues with that?
Always a pleasure spending time watching your videos! If you ever find yourself in Western North Carolina you have a open invitation to share a camp with me!
Its always a pleasure when you taking the time to stop by, my friend! Thank you for the open invitation! I have family that lives in Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs! Very nice to hear from you, Timothy! -Dave
Dave, I love following your videos and I always learn something new. I currently carry a Husqvarna Carpenter Axe, and was looking to upgrade to a Counsil Tool axe. Which do you prefer to bring with you in the woods? The Saddle axe, or the Bushcraft axe(24") ? Thanks for your input. All the best.
Can you provide the link? When me and other people search amazon, all we found was GI "type" lids and the Rothco lids that do not fit the USGI canteen cup without modification. This one was designed to fit the USGI cup perfectly. -Dave
Not the SAME lid. I had the Knife maker ( Mr Fergeson) make some more. Available in limited quantity on eBay. Brandywinemab is the seller. Item # 323954925941
A++ Video Dave, I would have given you A +++ , but you didn't include : DAVE'S Patented Camp Coffee and/or Camp Noodles......Just kidding.. A++++ , Keep The Vids coming !! Take Care, Clark
Thank you for taking the time to stop by, Clark! Nice to hear from you, my friend! Sorry about that...next time we will whip up some coffee and/or noodles..hahaha! You take care, too, Clark!

It’s awesome to see someone use an axe made in the US, I mostly see people grandsforth Burke’s. I’ll Definitely check out that axe. Thanks bud!

-Dave

The people who made the Velvicut should be proud of themselves.
I am extremely picky when it comes to axe design, but his axe blew me away. I haven't been this amazed by an axe in forever.
How do you like it now 3 years later

buen video gracias desde California
enjoyed see you again... let me ask you this what do you consider to be the best steel for a knife
Great to hear from you, ric! I appreciate you taking the time to stop by, my friend! My personal favorite type of steel is 01. Easy to sharpen and holds an excellent edge! Many people believe there are 'better' steels for knives but this one seems to work best for me and my purposes. Great question! -Dave
Not to be pedantic but it is a ferro rod like ferris as in iron but short for ferrocium which is the same thing that lighter flints are made from.
No, it is not ferrocium - it is ferroCERium. One of the important elements is Cerium..
Great collection of gear, love that knife!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by, my friend! Yes, there is definitely a lot to love about the Lagom Bush knife! My absolute favorite! -Dave
Nathan makes great ferocecium rods.
I like ALL ur items!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment! It's great to hear from you, my friend!
What is a Drop Poured???
Always a pleasure spending time watching your videos! If you ever find yourself in Western North Carolina you have a open invitation to share a camp with me!
Its always a pleasure when you taking the time to stop by, my friend! Thank you for the open invitation! I have family that lives in Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs! Very nice to hear from you, Timothy! -Dave
HighCarbonSteel Love Serious,if you're in NC message me!
I love highcarbon steel to
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, my friend! You just cannot go wrong with high carbon steel! -Dave
They have those canteen cup lids on Amazon.
Can you provide the link? When me and other people search amazon, all we found was GI "type" lids and the Rothco lids that do not fit the USGI canteen cup without modification. This one was designed to fit the USGI cup perfectly. -Dave
www.amazon.com/dp/B00GXJCHZ8/?coliid=INSMY2374C3Z2&colid=3BQBM0RI1ZLGS&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
Unfortunately, without modification, this lid does not work well with the USGI Canteen Cup.
