614 really had a chance to show off her best during these 96-98 runs. She'd run at high speeds and without any help. These exercusions were truly an example of what steam power could do!
I'm super jealous. Being born in the late 90s, I obviously never got to see the 614 run, back when she was painted in proper black and not that awful puke green like she is now. I've always wanted to see a B&O and C&O steam loco run in Cincinnati. I guess I never will get that chance...
I believe there is a 4-8-4 being restored in Kentucky. Maybe a 2-8-4, not totally sure. But it will be running fairly soon. Going to Connecticut to run there too, so it will be on some mainline.
@@RichKolasa You’re thinking of C&O 2716, which is a K4 2-8-4. The Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation is, as of the typing of this comment, in the process of rebuilding the 2716 for operation. And yeah, it’ll be going up to New England for some runs when it comes back. I hope standalone PTC on steam locomotives is figured out by then and 2716 runs some mainline excursions over home rails if CSX allows for it.
Wait so at 4:24 at Campbell Hall it said O&W Bridge.... is part of original O&W rails still being used? I thought O&W was all ripped up back in late 50's early 60's.
I was hanging out of the open car for every excursions .. even the rain run. I must have had a 1/8" of soot on my face. That soot stings for about the first minute then ya go numb
CoasterFan3001 had cab signals installed later on also. I was the NJT pilot for it June 97 for a couple of trips. I think that I still have the coal smudged 'form d' we got at Port Jervis.
@@OldsVistaCruiser we may have gotten into a 50 mph curve doing 70 mph before getting it slowed to 50, around Garfield 😏. I think in due course of time, they just need to find a place to run before they will commit to doing the work on the boiler and so on, I bet she could be made to run again in very short order, I too would love to see this lima loco run once more
They stopped after November 1, 1998, likely due to rising insurance costs and updated federal regulations for steam locomotives. Supposedly Roland tried to sell 614 at an auction, but no one met the asking price. As of now she sits idle at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.
they do say they will put it back in service and redo the boiler once they have a place to actually run it otherwise it would not do much good to put all that money in and no place to make back revenue running one of these is not cheap as you know, and like any machine it takes maintainance to get and keep it running.
If you are talking about at 3:20, that's an original N&W single chime that you would find on a Class A or Y. There isn't anything wrong with it, that's how they sound. 614's running problems are more logistcal, as well as needing funding.
Incredible number of cars that beast is hauling.

You got that right
A steam locomotive pulling comet cars. Now that’s something you don’t see every day!
5:20 if you close your eyes, it almost sounds like you're hearing the Frisco Meteor or Will Rogers passing by behind one of those 4-8-4s
Dreams of yesteryear……!
Can't wait to see this again when 614 is rebuilt!
Wow what a beautiful locomotive that was but sadly it’s retired but let’s hope it will get restored to run again
As of November 2024, she is heading to the Strasburg Rail Road to undergo restoration to operating condition.
Excellent!! No Diesel
Strange but I miss seeing the telegraph poles😥
I like the run he did with the N&W freight whistle.

I'd like to see a steamer run in Cincinnati in general and actually do a trip all that we have had recently is 630 turning around

N&W hooter at 3:16
How many whistles did that sucker have?! I heard an N&W Hooter, Hancock 3 Chime, and a C&O 6 chime as well as an ATSF 6 chime in another video.
SP not ATSF 6
Bastard & Ohio
These were taken on different days.
I thought I heard a Federal Thunderbolt or a Q2B

buixrule The tracks were gone in1957, but the bridge still stands!
614 continues on the excursions duties all the way until 1999.
3:50 minutes in, Ross got a big slap for crossing too fast
It was neat to see the NJ DOT push-pull coaches getting doused in coal soot!
I find it kind of weird for a steam locomotive to have ditch lights.
I know. I think that was a requirement to run over NJT track. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Didn’t i see an open air car on that consist?? I thought open air cars were off limits on mainlines.

@@ThomasEckhardt i know. But... i was going to ask. Weren’t there not supposed to be any open air cars in the consist to begin with??
Is that a Reading 6 chime
Sounds like they used several different whistles. The one sounds like a C&O one-chime hooter, similar to NW 1218.
The lower whistle tone sounded sick.Curious, what is the estimated cost to get her running again

what whistle does she have?
Sounds like a reading 6 chime
In 1996 and 1997, she wore a Reading 6 Chime. In 1998, she wore a Hancock 3 Chime, and an N&W Hooter.
Ah yes, that would explain why the whistle in one clip kind of sounded like NW 1218's.
During the October, 1997 trips, she wore an SP 6 Chime.
Sounds a little bit like a Nathan 5 chime, but more high pitched.
