  • Creators were invited to another closed door meeting with Turn 10 to learn more about the game, and Yesterday's Forza Monthly expanded on the AI and tire model coming to Forza Motorsport! We really are seeing systems that have been rebuilt from scratch here, and it's got me more excited than anything I've seen yet!

    13 seconds is astonishing. I have to believe that at least some of that is because the new tire grip is fundamentally improved, but holy shit that is a mad difference over just the span of less than 90 seconds. On something like the Nurburgring we're looking at over a minute+ potentially. Wild.

    Your talk about the AI not being able to do partial throttle made me think of something that I've noticed with physics based racing games, something that I only noticed fairly recently, something that I've never heard anyone else mention but that is quite striking once you think about it: I have *never seen an AI opponent drift a car.* Not in any sim game, or even simcade game. Not in Forza Motorsport, not in Horizon, not in GT, not in Dirt, not in Project Cars, or Assetto, or even Grid, etc. I've seen it in Burnout and arcade games like that, but in a game with an actual physics model? Never.
    Isn't that a bit weird? There are plenty of real world events which involve two people drifting that you'd think developers could replicate in single player: they could do vs-AI tandems. They could do vs-AI Formula Drift events(we have a lot of FD cars after all). They could do vs-AI touge battles...but no game ever does.
    This suggests to me that there's something intractable about calculating opposite lock in real time, about calculating the balancing point when an AI car is drifting. I guess it's just not possible, or it's too computationally expensive, to have to update the precise amount of throttle/steering angle in real time as a corner changes shape and the car drifts through it. I personally would love to be able to tandem with AI drivatars, or compete against AI in FD events so I hope this is something they eventually manage to do.

    • @HokiHoshi
      @HokiHoshi  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      Yeah you pretty much answered your own comment but it really is just because it's extremely hard to build an AI model that can drift, arcade games can do it and you can do it by fudging the physics for the AI, but building a genuine, sim AI model that can manage loss of traction like that and throttle management and understanding where the car is going to go is probably harder than it seems!

      @@BkSMedia /i hadn't heard of D1GP before and went and looked it up on YT. That's a really cool counter-example, although I reckon they were probably using some tricks to fake the drifting given that it was on PS2. But...maybe not? IDK. Very interesting example, the physics look pretty weighty and genuine.

    • @tooeasy1100
      @tooeasy1100 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most racing games simulate or try to simulate the act of racing. And you really don’t want to drift in a race. So it makes sense the AI doesn’t do it.

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@tooeasy1100 I'm not just saying the AI don't do it, I'm postulating that they _can't_ do it.
      Every single sim racing game I can think of models drifting in some way, quite a few of them have formula drift tracks and even drifting events. But none of them have the AI drifting equivalent a racing opponent.
      If it were tractable for the AI to calculate drifting lines and how best to feather the throttle and control the wheel in a drift I would expect some developer, somewhere, to have implemented single player, vs-AI drifting. But no-one seems to have done it.

    This seems to be the most controversial motorsport release yet.
    Horizon has focused on reaching the broadest market possible, sacrificing deep gameplay for an all you can eat buffet of content.
    Motorsport has tried to follow suit but it never worked. Motorsport needs deep compelling gameplay to make doing loops around a track fun. Focusing in on a more serious design philosophy was bound to rustle feathers but I really like the direction they're going.
    When they said there were no wheelspins a whole back, it hit me that they finally have a vision again and they're not sacrificing it for quick gimicks

      I think its a great idea to remove the wheelspins. I did enjoy them, but you don't need them and they can be funny sometimes. Its the lack of a credit system and having to take hours of grinding to unlock one car that has me worried. There is vision for a deep gameplay experience, and then their is changing the game too much that the original fanbase may be too disliking of it. Not saying that will happen, but I have my concerns.

      @@spencermartin838 credits are still a thing. You still buy cars with credits. You just have to unlock upgrades for them, which takes about an hour for most upgrades and around 3 for all apparently.
      I think it's a real shame that everyone just maxes out every car as soon as they buy them. What's the point in an upgrade system if it's taken for granted, it's the whole "if everyone is super, no one will be", it makes upgrades boring and ignores how great stock cars actually are to drive.
      The only issue I see is how it's incorporated into multiplayer, but seeing as we don't even know how the multiplayer works yet, I think everyone is overreacting a little.

      I agree! And with more variations of aero should come downforce aerodynamics that vary with the type of aero installed, like instead of just one size fits all why not have a bigger, taller wing that actually provides more downforce than a smaller one, as well as how the airfoil is designed (flat wing surface provides some downforce while another type with curves on both ends can do it more efficiently). That way we can really alternate what wing type to use based on what we're going up against. Same thing with the front, splitters and dive planes (canards) once again with varying styles and sizes.

    Yes! I'm glad you asked about attacking and defending. Without it racing games feel like hotlapping sessions with obstacles. If you were to take away rubberbanding AI would just do the same lap over and over with some disturbance as different cars fall into their place dictated by pace in the roster. Rubberbanding is the cheaty way of achieving close racing but it does kind of achieve the effect of someone pushing for an overtake or playing safe when they got a healthy lead. How Grid does accidents is over the top. If FM AI can get a balancing act of being at 100% when conditions are right but either going under or over their limit when pressured or too relaxed then I think they'll have the closest game to racing real opponents.

      Dirfting is my main focus in racing games so that disappoints me too. I love Assetto, but I hope they don't wait too long to add in more drift features; cars obviously, but hopefully some touges, and at least one or two FD courses. Given all the FD cars in Forza it's bizarre that there hasn't been anything with proper clipping points, a track that's built for that kind of thing.
      BTW, something that I've only noticed recently(and I was wondering if anyone can think of a counter-example, so if I'm missing something obvious tell me): I have never seen sim/simcade AI...drift. I've never seen AI intentionally lose traction and find that opposite lock sweetspot, and maintain it. Which is a bit odd, no? There are so many potential single-player events that would be so much fun with an AI drift opponent: tandems, touge battles, FD events, etc.
      So unless anyone can think of a counter-example I'm guessing that it's just too complicated for AI to simulate in-game, because of how constantly the AI would have to update its handling. Driving in a straight line and braking at corners is tractable for the AI I guess, but drifting apparently isn't.

    A significant reason why PI balance had issues was because they were trying to balance all cars to a single track. For example some old cars you could make super OP on short tracks by keeping the stock 4 speed transmission. The PI would underrate the car because you don't have a good top speed. But on tracks without long straights it doesn't matter.
    Also, if you balance handling cars, power cars, and cars with a mix of power and handling to have the same pace at an average track; then as soon as you go to a slightly higher speed track the power car gets the advantage over the other cars. And as soon as you go to a slightly shorter track the handling car gets an advantage. This means that there was an incentive to either only upgrade power or only upgrade handling.
    I am hoping they have done something to alleviate this issue, like having 3 PI scores for 3 track types and then taking the highest PI score and giving it to the car. I also hope you are right that the improved AI has improved the PI system significantly.

While they said it will be improved in future, I really hope they have at least somewhat improved it on release. We all know how in certain parts of track AI just likes to be on right/left side even if you are side by side - they will just pretend you are not there. I like the sound of this AI based PI system, which comes with an improved AI which should hopefully help mitigate broken car builds (e.g. catfish camaro circa FM6/FM7, ek9 civic for FWD cars circa every FM, almost every Porsche being underpowered for its respective class circa FM6/7). The PI scaling is supposed to be the balancing act to keep races competitive, not a set of restriction meant to keep one particular kind of car as the glaringly obvious choice to be competitive (a great example is the 2018 CTR in FH5. its ridiculous as a FWD in A class. in fact, all of the civics are simply because of how much top end they can achieve in comparison to all other FWD cars. Its like wind resistance does not exist for them.

      @@rarensmann9136 i think that should stay, but in a way to help bring everybody's tuning skills up to par and to even out the tuning meta disparity, there should also be a "tuning school" or a series of main story missions where they show you not only the purpose of tuning, but also have a plethora of examples of what doing different things to your tune can do. End goal being to put together a build and tune it to completion AND have it complete a series of "test" (or easier versions of goals to hit from their main campaign)
      E.G. *script* Hey, looks like you just finished your upgrades, time to take it around the track. But btw, one of our rookie mechanic had a look at your car. Did some tweaks himself. Wants to know what you think.
      Fast forward to you racing in a car that OBVIOUSLY has the sway bars too stiff/ride height too high or low/tire pressure too low or high.
      *Script* yea, so looks like our rookie mechanic needs more time in the classroom. In the mean time, let go over your tune to see if we cant make your car easier to drive.
      *series of windows asking you to perform tasks to open up the telemetry, what on the telemetry to look at, and what to adjust to give desired results along with what to expect. (tires are too hot after cornering causing you to not only lose grip, but also affects tires wear. Solution, decrease tire pressure)
      This alone can be about 5 hours of campaign missions. And even then, its only touching the surface of learning to tune. I been playing since FM2 days back in 2006. I am STILL learning how to tune properly.

I mean 26000 lap is good for finding the best line but what about the brake lock that happened turn 9 on try 8753 ? They could even leverage the AI core baked in some GPU/SoC to make the AI continue adaptating to the new parameter we create as a human player on the track on long endurance race.
    My question is could that simulate a pressure system ? Like dinamically change the AI training level the longer and closer you stay ? Or maybe fatigue, like the AI having to "cool down" after being agressive for too long (or else make it more prone to errors)

    I was immediately excited at the prospect of the A.I. no longer relying on rubber-banding when I first heard about it. I was just tired of feeling as though I had no real control over my wins and losses at times (especially when your Drivatar data gets stale and goes haywire). I too often felt that the game was letting me win at the end of a race or screwing me over for the entirety of a race. I just want the A.I. to follow the same rules and ultimately have the same limitations as human players within reason, and I want it to drive believable. It seems like we're getting that going forward.
    On the subject of the tire model updating at 360 fps, I wonder whether it's feasible for future Forza games in general to run certain aspects of the simulation (or the physics in general) at higher refresh rates. With the idea that more current-gen games will fail to offer 60 fps modes, I'm curious as to whether having physics update at higher rates would at least make things feel more responsive.
    I remember playing Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on PC, and the game just felt terrible, as its physics model was locked at something along the lines of 30 fps. I could get higher frame rates, but the game never felt smoother until I unlocked the physics update rate using the game's console. I wonder if running the physics at 60+ fps with the graphics at 30 fps would improve things much.
    (I'm aware FM8 is at least 60 fps, by the way.)
