      Thats not fully true.
The WotLK-Cinematic was quite controversial when it was released as it lacked the "action" of earlier trailers and the players that didn't care about lore thought it was boring.

I absolutely loved it and I've played 14-15 years and still do. I started in Burning Crusade which was exciting for a new raid/dungeon gamer..and moved into Wrath. The music of Wrath was absolutely stunning and Arthas was a central figure through the couple of years of the expansion... Btw, a quick info dump to Luke and ppl new to WoW lore.
    - Arthas was the prince of a certain kingdom.
    - The narrator is supposed to be his father who is talking to his son.
    - During Warcraft 3(and during the Wrath of the Lich King) we see how Arthas becomes The Lich King(the dude we saw in this cinematic trailer).
His story is one of the best written in fantasy tellings in my opinion.
    We have:
    - Young Arthas who is in love with Young Jaina while being mentored by Uther and Muradin.
Yes, many people will tell you that Uther trained him how to be a Paladin but only a few know that Muradin trained him in how to be a proper swordsman.
    - The infamous Culling of Stratholme.
    - The expedition in Northrend and him obtaining the Frostmourne(the sword we see him wielding in the cinematic trailer).
    - His return to Lordaeron and his betrayal.(I think this one has also a short trailer that is worth checking out)
    - The Fall of Quel'Thalas and his encounter with Sylvanas Windrunner.
    - His encounter with Illidan while Archimonde was attacking Dalaran and Mount Hyjal.
    - Going back to Northrend and reaching The Frozen Throne(the place where we see him sitting at the start of the cinematic trailer).
    Just my 2 cents.

I love how they did the narration in the WoTLK cinematic. Everything Teranas (Arthas's father) said, has been proved wrong. He said Arthas grew into a weapon of righteousness, he ended up as a weapon of death and destruction, their line ruled with wisdom and strength, Arthas rules using fear and domination. He was sure that Arthas would show restrain in using his power, the dude just went and resurrected a big ass skeletal frost dragon. And the 'truest victory, is stirring heart of your people', but he just dominated them, and took control over them. But in the end, he really did become king. A Lich King...
    Probably my no.1 WoW cinematic

  • @Kyukon-038
    @Kyukon-038 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

It's complicated. Arthas was a good guy. This one's a bit of a ride, but he was a Prince and a Holy Paladin and a prodigy, literally the chosen one like Anakin Skywalker. However, his downfall is a lot more believable, as he loses himself pursuing a lich responsible for turning his father's subjects into undead. A major turning point in his story is when his friends abandon him as he proceeds to mercy kill an entire town of people infected with undeath. The problem his mentor and love interest have with this is that the people haven't fully turned yet.
So, Arthas goes on a path of vengeance against the masterminds behind the attack on his homeland, only to discover the sword and helmet you see him wielding in the video. The sword named frostmourne is used for stealing the souls of the dead to gain more power. The helmet and armour were made by the Burning legion to imprison an orc warlock who tried to stand up to the Burning Legion. The same burning legion from the title of the Burning Crusade.
That scary looking dude in the burning crusade trailer? He is someone else who was trying to fight against the burning legion, by using the burning legion's power himself.
So, this spooky possessed armour takes over Arthas and causes him to become more evil, and raise an undead army of his own. Together, they resist the control of the burning legion, and break free from it's hold, however they have a new plan. Kill everyone on the planet to make an unstoppable undead army to fight the Burning Legion.
So, he's not a good guy, his methods are bad, but his actual goal was a righteous one: Stop the Burning Legion and all those associated with it.

Thats what i meant in my comment on the last reaction. You can enjoy the WotLk trailer on its own, but when you know the lore behind it, its a f.... masterpiece. Arthas fell from grace because he got corrupted. The one who speaks in this cinematic is his father, the king of Lordaeron and its sooo sad, that he wanted that bright future for his son and he became something so evil. Arthas kills him in Warcraft 3, when he is already "bad" because of the influence of the Lich King. And then Arthas becomes the Lich King, basicly a King of the Undead, and travels to Northend, where this expansion takes place. The dragon he raises there, we had to fight in the last raid. Arthas was the last main boss.

"Illidan", the guy talking at the start, was a hero during the war if the ancients against the demons of the burning legion.
However his methods were a bit "wild" and he did something shortly after the war was over that got him imprisoned for 10.000 years.
During warcraft 3 the burning legiin came back, he was released and helped fighting them back again, but once again with questionable methods, so he got banished.
After this he went to another world called draenor where he overthrew the demon ruling it and took over.
Thats "his realm" now. (Though its more complicated than that)
Also illidan was the "villain" of that expantion, but overall hes more of an anti hero.

  • @Arshaiden
    @Arshaiden 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Arthas' journey to becoming the Lich King is still to this day one of the best stories in gaming for me. The levels of betrayal, manipulation and death. The impact on the world, and it's characters, were monumental. It literally shaped the world for all future events that came afterwards.
I would absolutely recommend looking into lore videos of his story.
There absolutely is good and evil in Warcraft as well as the tons of morally grey.
The story tested characters and pushed them in ways they never imagined. Illidan, the big winged demon guy in the Burning Crusade cinematic? He was an elf that took on demonic magic to become a Demon Hunter and save the world from the Burning Legion (basically an army of demons attempting to invade the world). He was punished for his actions (imprisoned for 10,000 years), but he did help save the world at the time. It was one of those morally grey moments.
There are hundreds of stories to tell from Warcraft lore and every expansion cinematic trailer will give you more questions than answers. Although sadly some of the more recent stories aren't as interesting (or make much sense). The cinematics are always fantastic though.

Illidan Stormrage, the one imprisoned for 10,000 years, was released from prison during warcraft 3 and in warcraft 3's expansion was exiled from the main world that everyone calls homes. And during the events of Burning Crusade the Dark Portal reopens up to the shattered lands of Draenor now called Outland and we are venturing forth.

  • @yurimeta19
    @yurimeta19 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Soooo long story short. For Illidan ( the winged guy at the end / narrator in the beginning) He "betrayed" his people by defecting to the Burning Legion who were going to invade Azeroth (the land he is originally from / the player is from in WoW) to try to dismantle them from inside their ranks. His people instead labeled him as a betrayer and imprisioned him for 10,000 years.
When the Burning Legion did finally invade Azeroth again he was set free from the prison to help battle them once more, but he consuemd the Skull of Gul'dan to become a demon (He was originally a Night Elf) and was banished by his brother Malfurion Stormrage. He eventually fled to Outland ( realm Burning Legion is from) and set up shop in the Black Temple.
The players in Wow are eventually manipulated into invading Outland to bring him down thinking he is now the cause for the Burning Legion invading Azeroth once more. (This is not actually the case but it's how it is presented in game as your reason for the expansion)
Very very very condensed summary of the events. There is a ton of Lore behind everything in Warcraft 3 / WoW

  • @shionrasenka
    @shionrasenka 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

In the The Burning Crusade cinematic (the first cinematic you watched), the one narrating is Illidan Stormrage, the twin brother of Malfurian Stormrage, both of them being very prominent characters in the lore of the Warcraft series. They are Night Elves, this franchise's take on Dark Elves/Drow from D&D. Night Elves were immortal until Warcraft 3, when the World Tree Nordrassil was sacfricifed to defeat an extremely powerful enemy. Nordrasill was a very special tree that gave the Night Elves their immortality, but after it was sacrificed, they lost that immortality. Most Night Elves at that point were well over 10,000 old.
10,000 years before the start of the games, during what is called the War of The Ancients, the Night Elves fought against a legion of demons called The Burning Legion. Illidan was imprisoned by Malfurion because Illidan had become half-demon due to a bargain he made with an extremely powerful demon from the Legion. Malfurion feared that Illidan had become the very thing that they had been fighting against, and so had him imprisoned rather than have him killed. The Burning Crusade takes place over 10,000 years later after Illdan was recently released from his prison.

The story about Arthas and his downfall is without a doubt the most tragic story in the gaming industry ever created. Arthas was the prince of Lordaeron and was loved by everyone. From an early age he was trained to become a Paladin, a righteous and holy warrior fighting for the human race. Then came The Scourge threatening the very existence of the world and Arthas decided to save the world by defeating it, no matter the cost. He was forced to make lots of impossible choices (for example killing everyone in a city that had become cursed by the plague, also known as The Culling of Stratholme). On his path to save the world Arthas lost himself and later on became the very thing he sought to destroy. This expansion was the peak of World of Warcraft and this cinematic is such a masterpiece when you know the backstory to Arthas. You can hear his fathers distant words how he wanted his son to turn out, which is the complete opposite of what actually happened. All he wanted was to save everyone he loved but ended up killing them all instead. Such tragedy.

Brunign Crusage is the second installment from the first expansion. Luke u should sometimes read things. :D
To answer your random question: The vocie belongs to Illidan, he is a former Nightelf (Became a demon by consuming stuff someone shouldnt consume to protect his home and got banished for that from his own brother.) He was indeed imprisoned and got freed in the Warcraft III Nightelf campaign, he did vanish then (returns in the frozen throne expansion to fight Arthas and getting defeated by him) and in WoW he returns behind the portal u saw in another world. That is what he meant with his realm, Draenor the name of that world. U watched the Movie so u know Draenor!
In Wrath of the Lich King, Arthas was a main character in Warcraft III and because of anger and blind revenge he turne to the Sword u see in the cinematic (Frostmourne what is part of the real Lich King) getting corrupted and turns from being a Paladin to being a Deathknight, later after he defeats Illidant he takes the Lich Kings crown (The helmet he is wearing) and fuzes basicly his mind with the mind of the Lich King and then he himself became the Lich King.

I think I mentioned on the last video that I started playing back in Burning Crusade. I never placed Warcraft 3 so I didn't have the initial background on Arthas when Lich King came out but I have read the novels and if you're ever interested, there is one called "Arthas" that covers a TON of his backstory. He is a seriously amazing character that.....I'm not gonna say he fell but instead he chose that path and charged down it. The things he did along the way.....enslaving Sylvanas as his Banshee Queen after killing her and forcing her to murder her own people (you saw her in the first cinematic you watch...the one that screamed. Her story is amazing too), the raising of Sindragosa (the dragon). It's intense. I definitely recommend the book. :)
There are several other Battle for Azeroth cinematics that are fantastic. And honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the WoW cinematics. They're all just beautiful.
Oh! You mentioned the music in Lich King.
Yes. That particular track still gives me chills. I do know the words are taken from a Warcraft 3 song called "O Thanagor" (O King). but you can also find this track on the soundtrack for WotLK as "Arthas, My Son"

The Lich King cinematic can be confusing for newcomers since it requeres some context.
The main character Arthas has his story in Warcraft 3 where he shifts from a noble holy paladin to the lich king you see here due to him being corrupted by that sword you see .
His story in Warcraft 3 ends with him going to sleep on that frozen throne.
So him waking up here years later was a big hype for fans since he was a beloved character.

There's no way to properly describe how hype that Wrath cinematic was at the time. The last we saw of Arthas was him ascending to the Frozen Throne, donning the Helm, and taking his seat as the new Lich King. Then he was relatively inactive until Wrath, at least him personally, his minions were doing stuff but he was very noticeably absent. Then that shot of him on the Frozen Throne is exactly how his previous cinematic ended, and now he's done sitting on his throne. It was finally his time.

The Warcraft 3 Cinematics are a sort of prequel story arc to World of Warcraft that will give insight into both the Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King cinematics, if you want to understand them. After that the rest are their own storylines mostly contained in the World of Warcraft game or books. My recommended watch order would be:
Warcraft 3 cinematics (optional, there's 9 in total for about 26 minutes runtime)
"The Wrathgate" + "Fall of the Lich King Ending" cutscenes (for understanding Lich King and Shadowlands)
    Cataclysm cinematic
    Mist of Pandaria cinematic
"Burdens of Shao Hao" series (optional for understanding Pandaria, 6 videos)
    Warlords of Draenor cinematic
"Lords of War" series (optional for understanding Draenor, 5 videos)
    Legion cinematic
"Harbringers" series (optional for random backstory of key characters, 3 videos)
"Warbringers" series (for understanding Battle for Azeroth, also has a cool song, 3 videos)
"Saurfang's Mak'gora" (collection of Battle for Azeroth cinematics in chronological order)
    Shadowlands cinematic
"Shadowlands Afterlives" series (optional for random backstory and vibe of regions)
    Dragonflight Announce cinematic
    The War Within Announce cinematic

I played Warcraft 3 back in the early 2000's and absolutely loved the story of Arthus. I didn't hear anything about World of Warcraft until one of my buddies in the Navy had me come over to his barracks room to show me this new mmo that had recently come out. Once I saw that it was based in the Warcraft universe, I went straight to the nearest game store and bought WoW. Your reaction to the last part of the Wrath fo the Lich King trailer is exactly what I was expecting. I've watched a lot of reaction videos to the WoW trailers (which somehow led me to your channel last week due to some other reaction of yours), and the end of the Wrath of the Lich King trailer always seems to stun people. The trailer is from 2008, but the graphics still hold up so well. Combine it with one of my favorite WoW soundtracks ("Arthas, My Son"), and it just creates an epic experience that hits in all the right ways.
The first time I saw the trailer, I didn't know the lore behind Arthas either, but the cinematic still conveys his power as the last boss of the expansion so well!
WoW recommendations apart from the trailers (others have mentioned them already): WoW soundtracks. However, only the short ones, as most of the zone soundtracks are over 1h long, but they are incredible as background music while working! Here are my recommendations for videos (and do try to find them with lyrics for a translation of the songs):
-Arthas, My Son (a song about Arthas)
-Invincible (a song about Arthas's stead Invincible)
-Lament of the Highborne (a song by Sylvanas, the Banshee Queen you partly reacted to in the Battle for Azeroth trailer)
-Warbringers: Jaina (a song by Jaina, a major lore character of the WoW universe, which was 1 of 3 parts for the Battle for Azeroth expansion apart from the trailer)
-A Call to Arms (an epic original soundtrack for Warcraft 3. For lyrics and proper sound, check the video from neo2001ro (best I could find))
-Nightsong (a beautiful song in Darnassian (Night Elf language). Remember to find a lyrics video with the Darnassian and English)

Almost need an entire video for the story beforehand. There were 3 RTS games before World of Warcraft. Arthas' character came out of Warcraft 3 and is one of the most well-known video game villains of all-time. The father is talking about his son in the past so the one you see is the fallen version. He was the true final boss of this expansion of WoW and for many the culmination of Warcraft lore. I started WoW in 2004 and the prior is my favorite time in the game. I was in college and played all sorts of hours making great friends and memories I'll never forget even now into my 40s. So yeah, you watched one of the much later ones. I don't know if you've seen the original WoW trailer. Remember this game began its development in the late 90s. If we get technical WoW is a nearly 30 year old game with still massive popularity. I've moved on, but it'll forever hold a spot in my heart full of wonderful memories. Yes, even all you Wrath babies. ;)

2:50 Illidian, was an elven Daemon Hunter, who was imprissioned for 10 000 years by other elves(especialy by his brother->Malfurion). He became impure 10 000 ago, when fighting deamons from buring legion. That impurement was the main reason for his lockdown.
Back in warcraft 3, we play as an elven priest, who in order to defend her lands does both:
Wakes up some sleeping druids (including their leader-> Malfurion). She also frees Illidian from his prison in order for 2 brothers to reunite and fight common enemy.
Following events leed to Illidian absorbing powerfull deamon object, which results in Ilidian becomeing a deamon himself (but greatly weakening Burning Legion invasion force).
Illidian then, cursed again by his brother runs away.
He reappears in Warcraft3: Frozen Throne as he besieges an Ice Fortress in the Northland -> home of Lich King, and tries to destroy Frozen Throne, as a result of his actions, some of undead are capable to get free from Lich King influence... and that's how 1 of playable races in WoW began their strony.
Nevertheless, Ilidian, after failing to destroy the place, flees to Outlands -> an other world realm, where he takes over Black Citadel and makes it his fortress.
Burning Crusade expasion allowed WoW players to enter Outlands (through a dark portal) and fight Illidian himself in Black Citadel ;)

considering that WarCraft III ultimately also weaves into World of Warcraft, my recommendation would be the following (it´s effectively the release-order):
    - Warcraft III
    - Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne
    - World of WarCraft
    - WoW: The Burning Crusade
    - WoW: Wrath of the Lich King
    - WoW: Cataclysm
    - WoW: Mists of Pandaria
    - WoW: Warlords of Draenor
    - WoW: Legion
    - WoW: Battle for Azeroth
    - WoW: Shadowlands
    - WoW: Dragonflight
    - WoW: The War Within
That´s effectively the main trailers for the games/expansions, and since WC3 especially gets relevant again in WotLK, it´s a good addition upfront. I think there are a few more (for the content-patches inbetween the expansions), but the most important ones are imo the main-trailers (especially if you don´t know what´s going on anyway^^)
About the WotLK-trailer: The narrator talking about Arthas (the at-that-time Lich King you see in the cinematic) is his father (Terenas Menethil) talking about his son and former Prince of Lordaeron. The way he talks about him effectively describes Arthas' former self, before he fell from grace and became the Lich King. Arthas used to be a righteous paladin before, but got effectively baited in taking the cursed sword (Frostmourne, the sword he wields in the cinematic), that slowly but steadily took his humanity in WC3: The frozen Throne, ending in Arthas becoming the Lich King

    • @jurare89
      @jurare89 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also, fun-fact about undead actually being "the good guys":
technically, the playable race of the Undead in World of Warcraft are "the good guys" (based on the viewpoint of the player). because while most undead before and during Wrath of the Lich king are under the Lich King's control, the playable race basically freed themselves from the LK's influence. So they (objectively speaking, in the greater scheme of things) are "the good guys".
However: this view is (from a lore-standpoint) not necessarily shared, since the WarCraft/WoW-universe is effectively split into 2 faction: the Alliance and the Horde. While the Alliance consists out of (only counting the main races, but not sub-races that we currently have) humans, draenei, dwarfes, gnomes and night elves, the Horde consists of Blood Elves, Orcs, Tauren, Trolls and Undead.
considering that the alliance and the horde have a massive history of periods of war and temporary armistice (the war never settles permanently), depending on who you would ask, the respective other would always be "the bad guys", unless they are forced to work together against "an even more bad guy" (like the Lich King for example).

His story is fantastic and I highly recommend looking more into it but that's the TLDR. As for the narration in this cinematic, it was something Arthas' father told him in the past and was deliberately punctuated by the irony of what he has become and what he's doing in the cinematic.

Illidan fits that idea as well. Maybe not as white to black...but still.

@@samuelengle3773 eh, sort of. His story has a lot more subtly and intrigue. Illidan played the role of infiltrator and for the longest time it was hard to tell where his motivations truly came from. Yes he wanted to stop the Legion buuuuuut... recontextualized 2016 Illidan isn't going to convince me that there was no selfish desire for power also guiding his actions.

The Wrath of the Lich King packs so much more of an emotional punch if you had played Warcraft 3... or at least the missions for the humans.

I would highly recommend watching the Lords of War, Harbingers, and Warbringers and Afterlives videos too, they are incredible.
