Saw "some of the best drill I've ever seen" in the thumbnail and immediately knew it was a 2000's Cavies show without any other indication. Michael Gaines truly is on the Mt. Rushmore of drill writers up there with George Zingali (speaking of, a Star of Indiana '91 or '93 reaction would be beyond phenomenal).

Hey look! It's my request! This show has some of my favorite drill of any show (though Cavies 03 is certainly up there); perfectly embodies that "controlled chaos" that I mentioned in one of your previous reaction videos.
Check out their 1995 Planets show as well (their 2nd DCI championship). The best musical book they've ever played paired with gorgeous drill and a stellar guard.
HOW DID I MISS THIS VIDEO?? I marched this show, it was a ton of fun. By the way, the circle moving through the sea of people is supposed to represent the old James Bond movie openings where the gun scope/barrel is moving across the screen following it's target (the performer in the middle is the person being targeted/followed)
Charlie this is one of those shows that has a few moments where there is what I call the perfect silence. Everyone is so into the show that a sustain ends and the sounds either reverberate or fade out and nothing is heard except the intended sound and the audience is absorbing so much before they respond with applause.
The circle is a submarine, with a solo guard member representing James Bond. The rest of the corps is the water the sub is going through, with members either merging into the sub circle or getting displaced by the circle as it passes through on its way to Cuba.
Oh wow, how things have changed since my marching band days 60 years ago! Walking drum quads, so cool. They were spectacular! Thanks for reacting and the memories - we were quite good.
Charlie, the uniform design helps in making those shapes in the drill "pop" out and so effective! White hats, white sashes on the uniforms, and white gauntlet gloves! It's awesome, my all time favorite group!
Fun fact the Cavaliers are one of the only corps still around that march with only male participants. Every bit of this drum corps is male based which would be all the way from the front ensemble to the colorgaurd members.
You perfectly summed up why I love this era of drum corps: “complex evolving patterns.” While today’s musicianship may be better, it has come at the expense of the more captivating, satisfying drill of the 90’s and 00’s.
I'm so glad you are looking back there are some absolutely amazing shows to see, 89 phantom and 95 blue devils stick out for me it and remember electronics and even amplification were not permitted in the past. i recently watched your reaction vid to a judges tape and think you gave yourself way too hard a time comparing yourself to that. those judges not only are very experienced but have seen/listened to the the show countless times all ready that season they have spoken to the creative staff and other judges etc. The hallmark of a great show is being able to watch/listen to it time and time again and finding fresh things to enjoy. As for this show Cavies were on fire, the drill inspired by the traditional James Bond movie credit sequences was amazing, unfortunately the recordings didn't do the show justice I was fortunate enough to be at finals this year and it was truly outstanding. Keep up these vids from a fellow brit and Drum Corps geek.
This was from the era of "kaleidoscopic" drill. You start seeing the brilliance of Michael Gaines in the mid 90s. He now works with Santa Clara Vanguard.
The older shows were more about the incredible drills (and of course the music) and not so much about the theatrical shows and props. Both are awesome in their own ways. I’ve said this before, my brother in law was a drummer in the Cavaliers, his brother was a horn player. Long time DCI fan. Yes, the judges used to be on the field. It’s unbelievable to see these performances in person. We would go to local competitions then head up to the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater for DCI Midwest then off to the host city for Nationals (World Championships). Such fun and a great excuse to travel.
Glad to have you back! Congrats on 100k!!! You could check out 2011 Cadets - "Between Angels and Demons" I noticed you talk about experience with God through trying times in your unboxing video, and thought you might enjoy this show.
If you're looking for early Drum Corps, watch the Troopers, Troopers and Cavaliers together, birthed the ideas that later became DCI after leaving the American Legion and VFW drum corps circuits. Troopers 1972, 1973, 1979, 1985, and 1986 are a few of the greats!
I haven’t even watched it yet but I’m so excited to see it posted as I marched in The Cavaliers and I see in the thumbnail that you hit on the drill❤️. this is right in the middle of a decade owned by The Cavaliers in large print due to one of the all-time best drill designers Michael Gaines
2004 was the first year that amplification was allowed, although it was more limited back then than it is now. Electronic instrumentation was not allowed, but they were allowed to amplify acoustic sounds from the pit, and most corps utilized that to amplify things you couldn't normally hear without it, like whistling or finger snapping from members and instruments that you wouldn't normally be able to hear very well without amplification.
I absolutely love the fact that your new favorite show is a Cavies show ❤️ Btw, a lot of people call The Cavaliers either the Cavies or The Green Machine💚💚 Any time you react to a Cavaliers show, you may see a lot of 🌈 in the reactions and this is because our corp song is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and we circle up and sing it in our own way before taking the field every show: The Cavaliers won their first World Championship in 1992 and went on to win in 1995,2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006…..They should have also won in 2003 and 2007 but took 2nd to the Blue Devils…They have always been top contenders through 2012 and then went through a rebuilding time with strong shows in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 but have struggled a bit since then falling out of the top 6 but still putting out great shows and making finals. You will love their 2nd place shows from 1990 and 1991. i knew i wanted to be a Cavalier after seeing those 2 shows live. i get so excited every time i get notified you have posted, I can’t imagine how excited I will be when I see that it is one of my paypal requests as i know you will love both of those for different reasons 👍😁 i know you have a few pages of shows already but i put together a list today and i am just going to send them all through paypal and if someone has already requested them, use the money to get here next year. Keep them coming sir 😁🌈
These are mostly High School and young college kids. Most are and have been involved in music and marching since they were in 5th grade. I did marching and started in 5th grade as well. There are probably 3 or 4 thousand people there, all supporters of their respective corps.
1999-2010 was peak drill writing. Michael Gaines is the GOAT of drill writers, hes currently at Santa Clara. If you wanna see his indoor work (/watch?v=zpWYYai71Rw)
By the way, as corps insider and someone who marched in 2004: DCI doesn't march in formation. Cavies are famous for marching dot-to-dot, by which I mean every individual marches independent (ish) of everyone else. That's how you manage that level of complexity. That "0 0 7" formation was very eyeroll at the time.
I'm not sure what night this video is from during the Championships, but this is not even close to the quality of footage/videography that's on the Cavies Championship DVD. Whoever filmed this didn't do this show justice - there is SO MUCH MORE TO SEE in this show. Charlie was short-changed - grrr!
The 2004 audio and video quality just kind of sucks on the official DCI DVD for 2004 for some reason. It sounds almost muffled in a way. At least it isn't as bad as 1996 though.
Yeah, work your way backwards, don't go too early too soon. You could stay in 2000 - 2008...can't go wrong with any group, but the Cavies are the best in that decade for sure! If you REALLY want to go "back" to where the modern era of drill took a seismic shift ..... at a refined level .... 1984-1987 Garfield Cadets. From around 2020 forward, there is less emphasis on drill now and more emphasis on set pieces or "staging" which is heavily influenced by the indoor activity WGI. Landmark years for change: 1982 drill (Garfield), 1993 body movement (Star of Indiana) , 2000 (Change to concert instruments and away from Bugles), 2004/5 Amplification, 2014/15 soundscape (Bluecoats), 2022 is more the "staging" era. It's hard to notice the changes to the activity without watching EVERYTHING from those years for comparison. They really were major shifts to the activity. There were big changes in the 70's to instrumentation .. but the modern era (IMO) started around 1982 .. the Golden Era was from 1987-1994 ... the Crazy bookend to the Golden Era was 1994-2000 ..... things have changed soooo much since then.
