I met an eight-year-old boy who had lost both his eyes to firecrackers. He was a student in a braille competition but an emotional mess. I never forgot him and his mother. Such a tragedy. Glad you were able to walk away unharmed.

O yes, you are absolutely right. Once I was visiting NYC/Manhatten. I jumped out of one of the busy streets in Manhatten when a traffic light was red to get a better picture of the sky scrapers. A clerk from a nearby hotel run behind me and grabed me on my jacket and pulled me away from the onrolling traffic. I was very thankfull that he reacted that quickly.

And that’s why sale of fireworks 🧨 to the public was banned 50 years ago in Australia. Even before gun laws were tightened right down. I’ve seen enough of the problem over my life to know that neither are things that should be in the hands of the public.

@@shred3005 in Canada, commercial fireworks are regulated, and you must obtain a shooters permit through the fire department safety program. It involves not only shooting fireworks with a season professional, but you have to do a number of shows with that professional before your permitted a license. I really enjoyed my time, learning how to professionally shoot fireworks. The regular stuff at the store is just Mickey Mouse compared to what I was shooting in the night sky. The largest show that I ever shot was for the city of Toronto and another that we took out the fireworks to Vancouver. It was a great time to learn how to professionally shoot fireworks safely. 🙂

    Such great advice.
I climbed up to Angel’s Landing at Zion National Park in Utah a little while back.
It’s stunningly beautiful, but can be terribly dangerous if you aren’t paying attention.
On my return to ground level, I found out that there have been multiple deaths from people taking selfies.
No shot is worth risking your life

I was a fireworks tech for 5 years. I launched "shells" out of a 10" round metal tube! LOTS OF THEM! We lost an entire load in 15 seconds when one of the tubes fell over. The whole crowd started to run.. VERY FAST!
At the same show, a police officer that was on safety patrol, earlier in the day, for the Father's Day event stopped at one of the 10" tubes "looking for the fireworks shell that was at the bottom of the tube". I stopped him and asked him if I could look down the barrel of his gun? He said that would be dangerous. I said "no kidding" as I pointed to the round 10" tube holding a 6" shell..... DUH!

I had almost the exact same experience with a similar firework on 4 July. We were using a couple of different makes of mortars, and we finally determined that we had used the wrong tube for the one that did not launch. Concussion from the explosion was surprisingly powerful ... and scary!

The dog appearing on the screen behind you right at 2.51 on cue is amazing video timing planning. Yup, agree with you sir, safety is paramount and that a dog can be the 3rd eye. Cheers!

That sounds like a close call. I am glad you did not get hurt. I agree that the #1 photo tip will always be number one. No photo is worth any injury or even death. You find numerous stories of people falling to their deaths whilst taking the perfect photo or selfie. I am doing some lost place photography and safety is always my top concern. Loose floorboards or collapsing ceilings are always to be considered and if floors or stairs are too flimsy, I don't go any further.

Fireworks for public sale have got larger and more powerful over years. If you look at the information it says the minimum distance you should be stood from them and many people haven’t got gardens long enough to be that far away. It’s quite amazing that they’re sold to anyone over an age when you think what they actually are. So glad you are ok. I was at a small display many years back and from memory they had long lighted tapers to light them so not electrically lit, a spark must’ve dropped and omg boom! The “display” was over in seconds as they all went up, it was terrifying and I’m sure many of us ran faster than we ever have. Lucky no one got hurt.

This is something I could do with practising more; I don't multitask, which is why I normally shoot solo - If I'm with someone I miss shots.
I often go home wet upto my knees because I've been so focussed on the surfing that I've missed a tidal surge.

I'm still new to my XT5 ... using the 18x55 lens I put everything in auto mode and handed the camera to my friend girlfriend and let her shoot 350 pics at our weekly tennis match ... then I used the settings meta data to give me a frame of reference on how to dial in the camera to better shoot the gang playing tennis ... the camera shot some decent photos but just fell short on the focus of the subject (who obviously was moving) it also dawned on me we weren't using the tripod. Next time I will do the same thing only using a tripod instead but can you give me some tips on where you would begin to gain Inference on shooting others playing tennis as far as settings go? ..I did have the AF set to action sports with zone AF set also ... I definitely will keep experimenting but was hoping you might know some tips on this approach regarding things like shutter modes etc.. I was using the standard mech shutter... luv what you do, thanks!!

Glad you’re ok. I love your videos and have seen most of them many times. Always something to learn. I bought an xt1 and xt3 because of your videos. I send this question only because this is your latest. Why such a major issue in any camera should be focusing??!! To this day they’re trying to “fix” focusing with firmware updates. Isn’t that a basic function of a camera????? Most other videos I’ve seen for years mention this! What the heck is going on?? Love you Chris

I also made some really stupid things as a child with fire works. Looking backwards hillarious stupid things, that actually was quite dangerously. We could not buy bombs so we had to make it ourself. One way was to fill the whole with candle candle wax.
I accidential lid the fuse while doing it.............................................I managed to stop the fuse though before it turned on.
I am really amazed how stupid you could be at that age. What was I thinking??????

Certainly glad no one was physically injured. Nonetheless, not judging mind you, but I have become convinced that the damage to the environment and our pets is too great to justify the use of fireworks. I have photographed and enjoyed them, but no more. Time to find a better way to celebrate the 4th and other events.
