I've gotten heavily chewed out by Amtrak crew for doing this and the conductor tossed my device across the parking lot (no damage was done, it landed in a pile of gravel) the train had stopped at the station and I had placed my device a bit farther up the tracks. Amtrak crew was not at all happy. Ruined my railfanning vibe for a long time.
