I think you will probably come to realise that adding perch was not the solution you were seeking. Perch are avid spawners and because they spawn much earlier in the year than carp their eggs are not predated to the same extent in the way summer spawners are. You will end up with a glut of small perch very quickly which kind of defeats the object of what you were trying to do. Far better to trap your C1's using fine mesh Fyke traps. Or wait untill the winter and run a net through. If you insist on intoducing fry eating predators then I would suggest stocking chub. They are not prolific still water spawners and are good fry eaters. All new waters benefit from an early surge in fry survival. Far better to harvest them at a year old and sell them on (or give them away) to a club who would be grateful for them. I offer this advice as a fishery owner with more than 35 years experience.

A wee underwater light shinning up from the bottom to attract the fry, the perch will gorge themselves on them even during the night!😂 And you can watch them attack the fry after dark

We use fish traps to reduce the amount of fry post spawning. You just need to get a bunch of big plastic bottles, cut the top off, turn it inside out and tape it back together and tape a length of rope to it. You put some pellet inside the trap, fill it with water and then leave it in the margin, check it after a couple of hours and you'll have a bunch of fry trapped inside that you dispose of and reset the trap.

Just stock with perch, they mop them up, keep your biomass down. So so many big carp waters contain big perch. Pike can be a pain, cats breed and cat become obsessed with carp baits not live bait, not so perch.
Also allow carpers to fish a light float rod for free, catch then, put them in a stock pond, sell them.
The brushes a good idea too.

You should always start with bait fish minnows ext. Then, small predators like crapie. Then, move to larger predators like bass. If you want catfish, add them before bass. You should only add 1 or 2 carp. They grow fast and eat way to much.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned but you should look at reaching out to your local council or to the guy on the "leave curious" channel or some of the people involved in rewilding, I'm sure you could find volunteers willing to help you remove and relocate them and you could be helping local canals and rivers.
I'm not sure of the legalities around it because carp aren't native but we had a fish kill in the canal near me and they restocked it with carp amongst other fish.

  • @SurgicalMango
    @SurgicalMango 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

A lake without predators is just asking for trouble. They play an important role in clearing up the dying and diseased fish therefore preventing the spread of disease and maintaining a balanced biomass. I have to admit that I find it slightly concerning when carp obsessed anglers try to create a lake stocked with Horris, Borris and Dorris, then expect them to do just fine without any further intervention. King carp were never native to the UK to start with. A lake of that size with so many large carp in is always going to cause issues and require aeration in certain conditions. You're likely to have some real issues once anglers start pilling bait in and the silt starts to build up. Not my cup of tea, but each to their own I guess! Good luck, you've got a lot of work and headaches to come.

A local club close to me has a 3 acre pond that used to hold massive shoals of rudd
In the mid 90s they put around 15 to 20 chub in the lake
The following summer there wasn't a single rudd left in there apart from the odd one or two between 1lb and 3lb mark
The chub were massive as they are known for growing bigger in lakes

Only very small jack pike take small fry...large pike will be taking large fish and frogs, baby ducks etc..
I would never recommend stocking pike for fry control in a commercial pond..much better to use perch, chub and orfe..perch are very effective predators of small fry...
The only issue with perch is that if they're happy they will spawn and you need to watch you don't overpopulate.

He will add pike to control the perch. Catfish are an absolute nightmare in carp lakes, I bet over 90% of serious carp anglers hate cats

Absolute madness transferring fish from one pool to another during warm weather, especially as you don’t appear to have quarantined them prior to release. There’s a reason fish are stocked in winter months - to stop transmission of disease.

Beg you only put a few perch in, 40 that could grow to 3+lbers as opposed to 600 that will multiply like hell and not grow over 2lb

Years ago when controlling a lake in Surrey, roach were the problem and so trout were used to keep the population down. As stated by another, rainbows are fairly easy to obtain and their life cycle fairly short. The weather is showing signs of getting autumnal and you should be ok.

Stick some ghost carp in there. They will eat anything smaller than themselves! Ask Jeremy Clarkson.
My mum and dad's coi pond had 10 or so big fish 10"+ and over 50 small fry, a small 5" ghost cleared out everything smaller than itself in less than 6months.

There’s a reason why you have roach with carp they’re prolific egg eaters and maybe a couple of pike , every water needs balance
