If I’m not mistaken this show was shot in Minnesota in 1995, where many of the Swedish immigrants found a home in the 1800s- early 1900s. Many of the elderly people in the audience are children and grandchildren of Swedish immigrants, hence the emotional reactions from some of them. Many of the Americans in the audience spoke and understood Swedish very well. They didn’t need subtitles! 😀👍

Thanks for a great reaction and for sharing this! Her character misses home back in Sweden and is looking back at the day when she had to leave her home country. Seeing other ships sailing home to Sweden she realizes she will never get to return again.

In the stage performance the quire part ("where is home?") is sung by her children asking her when they will get wherever they are going. The song is her reassuring them (while remembering the home they left behind) that they will soon find a place to call home.

Kristina is homesick but at the same time she does realize that the place she calls home will not be the place her children remember as their home. And it’s for their sake she left everything she love. She knows they can never return to their old home, and they haven’t settled in a new home yet.

Kristina from Duvemala is a musical , I would recommend Wildgrass with Anders Ekborg and Guldet blev till sand , by Jöback that also is songs from this musicals

Both songs are part of a musical Kristina från Duvemåla, based on a novel about poor Swedish farmers emigrating to the USA, after years of failed crops and starvation.
Kristina never wants to emigrate, despite their hardships at home. But she stays loyal to her husband.
