She never wanted to leave... and now she'll never see her homeland again. This makes me cry every time.

I'm Swedish, born and raised. Listening to this song reminds me that it truly is a blessing and a privilege never having had to flee (or be taken away) from
one's homeland, away from everything one has ever known and loved ... away to an unknown place, where one's future is entirely up in the air; for all Kristina knew,
her future might not even exist at all. The number of people who are in that kind of situation right at this moment, even in this day and age, is heartbreaking.
This song represents that so well. Its melody, lyrics, and Helen's voice+stage presence really makes this an emotionally stirring performance. ♥

As a Swede who has been living abroad for many years ...This song makes me cry rivers! Especially when she comes to the part about Midsummer - The most Swedish of all!!!
Even the tone of the song is sooo very Swedish!

The description to that video is wrong. This song takes place when they're just arriving to the US. They're still in New York, waiting to take a train inland. The description seems to talk about another song 5 numbers later called "Ljusa kvällar om våren" (Bright evenings in spring).
Love your reactions, anyway. Thanks for sharing them.

Super underrated song. I understand why Du måste finnas is more popular but I lowkey like this one more. Also interesting to see how Americans react to its lyrics, since they have immigrant ancestors and should be able to feel deep down what it would mean to yearn for one's true home land in some way.

I think she sings this to her child. She herself is homesick but wants a better life for her children in the new world, a place that They Will call Home.
Introduction describes Ljusa kvällar om våren. It’s lovely. Find it if you can.

The translation is pretty off though... Feels like a combination of someone who's not that good at either languages. Still, it does get the overall point across! 😅
I'd really recommend "min astrakan", the cd version. It's one of my absolute favourites! It's majestic. 😊

This is one of the most emotional songs in the entire story.
The most strange is that it is a regular polonaise with characteristic 3/4 beat.
Perhaps it was due to high mood required to tell farewell to a home country and welcome the new (though at a time unknown) place on Earth.
