I became a big Sarge’s fan because of your recommendation years ago. It is a must every time I visit. It is all subjective and relative and even the lowest ranking pizza and pastrami spots in New York can often beat our own local spots. That’s why we gotta keep visiting 😊
We ate at Sarge's a few weeks ago on your recommendation & it was fantastic!! We'll be back in NYC this summer & I'm already looking forward to eating there again!
My husband and I went to 2nd Ave Deli. We absolutely loved it. The pastrami sandwich was soooo good!!! You are the reason why we fell in love with New York ❤
I've been to all four (4) spots many times since the 70s. They are all good. Sarge's was my father's favorite. It was a horrible crime when the owner of 2nd Ave was murdered. It was also a crime when the 2nd Ave moved. It's not worth it to wait in a long line out the door, and down the block for an overpriced Pastrami sandwich. (Katz's) Pleased these guys featured other delis and gave it to Sarge's.
@A180892 well, first of all it’s NYC - the undisputed capital of the world😮😅😊, second - did you see the amount of pastrami (you can easily shared it with another person) 🙀
@@homerb3368There is a place in Michigan Jimmy D’s that has a Rueben this stacked and you get it with fries for less then $10.00 and it is legendary here and unbelievably good. I never tried Katz deli when I lived there in the early 2000’s as a sandwich was I believe $17.00’s then which I thought was to high.
$28.39 euros. Does that help? It's really a portion for two. Other spots will serve you half a sandwich for $15-17, but Katz does it their way with huge portions. It's beyond iconic.
Bit of feedback: Your videos are better when the reviews seem more honest, like this one. When you meet restaurant owners or know them personally, it is less likely that you will give honest reviews in the video because you want to be nice to them. Even better would be for you and the guest to write down your ratings separately beforehand so that you don't influence each other during reveals. Anyways, thanks and keep up the food videos!
I hear you. I honestly don't like to just do "food reviews". Once in a while sure, but it's also fun just hanging with the owners and highlighting their stuff too w/out such a ranking eye.
@@HereBeBarr Totally get it. The number ratings and rankings aren't necessary. What most important is hearing your honest opinions about food that aren't influenced by meeting or knowing owners. Perhaps the honest food review videos should have this in the title to distinguish it from from the videos where you talk to owners (such as the previous "Affordable 5 Star Restaurants" video)? Myself and probably a lot of other people watching your videos are looking for places to eat in NYC with the best food because we don't have time to research and try everything, and the videos with your honest impressions are by far the most useful. Just my opinion as a viewer, hope it helps!
I'm a NYer, and have been to Katz, Sarge's and 2nd Ave. a number of times. These two guys are not lying to you. Katz's is very touristy, but it is legit. I prefer Sarge's and 2nd Ave. as well.
🤯😱just talked about this yesterday! “ Midnight Cowboy” That line was not in the script, a real Cabbie almost hit Dustin & he legit yelled at the driver. Director kept it & the rest, as they say, is History.😂
On the face of it,... wouldn't you find it hard to believe that when filming a movie all parameters of the film are controlled? I find it VERY INTERESTING that during the filming of a movie one of the stars almost gets "vehicularly damaged" by accident.
Sarge's used to be my favorite for a long time, but I feel they have fallen off a bit recently, like within the last year. Prior to last year, they definitely had the best Pastrami sandwich in NYC. As you said, it had that very rich and buttery taste with melt in your mouth, thin pastrami. It was great. The last few times I ordered it, it didn't even taste fresh. Might be better to eat in the restaurant, because Katz's delivery orders are the same way - not fresh tasting at all, but in the restaurant it is great. My preference is Pastrami Queen or 2nd Ave. But #1 in the world, is definitely Hershel's in Philly. No one comes close to them. They have similar larger slices like Katz (the owner worked there for 20 years), however it is melt in your mouth, fatty and tons of the spicy peppercorn bark from the edges. Nice and grilled bread. It is so good.
I gave up on the main Katz location before. But went to the Brooklyn one earlier this year and loved it. Can’t wait to try the others in future trips. NYC is becoming a yearly thing for me at this point!
Love the framing here! 6:03 - actually they have some pretty good burgers, though! Thanks for taking us on this pastrami tour - some of my favorite spots highlighted (My personal fave is Katz but that's partially nostalgia)
Carnegie was the best (dearly departed). Katz 2nd. Katz can be inconsistent. Make sure you taste first when offered. It can be rubbery. Get your sandwich from a piece you like. Sarge's is good but nowhere near these other two
Went to Sarge's last time in NYC. Was the best. Wasn't even a line, quick service. I can't wait to see the line next time I go thanks to this video. :)
I've only had Sarge's, but I knew it would win the day. I'm going back to NYC in April, and I can't wait to eat there again. So juicy! I find myself very frequently craving a hot pastrami on rye from Sarge's. I tried the same type of sandwich in my hometown of Denver some months ago, but it was so dry and so little meat! Lame! Sarge's or nothing. I'm thinking about trying an egg cream with it next time.
If I had to rate the best in NYC and slightly beyond, it would be Sarge's and then Harold's NY Deli in that order. I have had pastrami shipped to me from Pastrami Queen and I would rate it a 4.0. Been to Katz's several times and give it a 5.5 and the same for the 2nd Ave Deli. I hope you can get to Harold's in Edison, NJ for a video. How about Liebman's in the Bronx?
I will freely admit my bias but Sarge's all day! Kat's is great but it's for the tourist crowd. Pro tip, Sarge's has the be best Kreplach in the city! #Iykyk
A lot has to do with thick hand slices vs thin machine slices. I prefer thin slices since the oxygen improves favor like with wine. Note Sarges has excellent French fries well.
Sarge’s is my favorite NYC Deli. Great food, great service, and a great atmosphere. Katz has good food, but I am not a fan of how they treat customers and their bread is terrible. Queen is good and I haven’t been to 2nd Ave.
Barr, can you suggest a place in the city for Thanksgiving dinner, under $100? I wont be able to visit my parents this year. Thanks, love your channel!
2nd Ave don't overlook fries. Some of the best ever. You can order a half sandwich with fries. Katz's you can order a half sandwich with matzoh ball soup.
What kind/brand of mustard do these joints offer? On road trips I carry my own favrorite with me. Plain yellow is not acceptable. I like Batampte from Brooklyn.
@@stevec5465 I'm a native New Yorker. I've had every good Jewish deli in NYC and order delivery from Pastrami Queen, 2nd ave and Sarge's a lot. But I worked in Center City Philly for a couple years and Hershel's corned beef reuben blows everything away in NYC. The owner worked at Katz's for 20 years so he knows his stuff.
@kayflip2233 Sure, just like every steak place owner used to work at Peter Luger's. 😂 And Reubens aren't really a thing. Pastrami, rye, mustard. Has to be hand carved. Slicers don't count. And just because he's done it for 20 years and learned in NYC don't mean anything, other than he stole the brine formula. Native new Yorker. Went to Philly once. Once. Had cheesesteaks at a couple of places there. Not all that hot to tell you the truth. No wonder they like pastrami.
If you ever get out to Bed-Stuy I would love to hear your review of David’s Brisket House. It’s a bargain compared to these Manhattan joints and in my opinion, just as good. Edit: Nevermind!!! I saw your other sandwich review video and you did point out the human sizes and price point.
Been to both Katz and Sarges and I have to strongly disagree with you both: Katz its better by a mile. Sarges is good but it's just regular pastrami. Katz is outstanding pastrami.
Good Afternoon, All I can say is this... if there are seeds on the rye bread then for me.... IT'S A NO GO. Yes, I could probably have the sandwich on CLUB or a ROLL..... I am probably not. Please offer seeded and unseeded rye. Thank you.

oh for sure.
Yeah, me too! I still overhear some old-timers in Brooklyn; their accents are the best: "Nu-Koyk" for Newkirk Ave.!

All of these places are excellent, honestly the best pastrami I’ve ever had was at Hudson and Charles, the butcher shop downtown.
Excuse me, but my European mind cannot comprehend...is that THIRTY DOLLARS for 2 slices of bread and pastrami?!
Yeah. Totally standard.

Look up 1 star reviews on Google, arrange by "lowest rated", Kat'z is especially bad
Amen to this comment. Nothing worse than a biased review.

Some foods just don’t travel well. They are either a mess when they arrive or too cooled off to be enjoyable.
We stop at Sarge’s nearly every time we are in NYC. It is a short walk from the Seastreak Ferry stop on 35th Street.
I have been twice to KATZ'S and I loved it; next time I'll be in NYC definitely need trying SARGE'S!!!
Pastrami Queen was originally Pastrami King on Queens Bl by the Courthouses in Kew Gardens

I think the difference in menu size at Sarge's is because (I'm pretty sure) 2nd Ave. is a Kosher deli -- so no Rubens or shrimp salad!
Yes it’s kosher kosher
2nd Ave don't overlook fries. Some of the best ever. You can order a half sandwich with fries. Katz's you can order a half sandwich with matzoh ball soup.
That Freddie Freeman troll had me rollin 😂 😅 (Sorry, Mets fan)
very funny.
Sarge's was the best looking sandwich as well. Bread was a standout.❤
one thing's for sure, katz's takes the top spot for most carcinogenic sandwich... better schedule the annual colonoscopy if you frequent this place.
Pastrami queen I Put that number 1. Katz delicatessen. I put number two.

Isn't there a 'Palestinian Chicken' outlet in NYC...?
Prefer Russian dressing on pastrami, mustard overpowers the flavor of the meat
With sauerkraut and that's called a Reuben.
As a side note - from all the places only 2nd Ave is Kosher, all others are kosher style.
Leibmans Deli Riverdale The Bronx. Old School
