Not all cacti are like this. The vast majority taste awful. And even more are some of the most poisonous plants on this planet. Compare it to blackberries. You have to stick your hand into a trap of thorns each time you reach for a berry.
In México we call the fruits Tunas. We peel them and eat them with Tajín and limon or by it’s self. And the pads are called nopales. Slimy but very good and healthy ❤

Nopales are so good . I grew up picking the young tender pads with my grandmother . She would scrap them and roast on a comal (cast iron grill) , in a corn tortilla with pinch of salt , sqeazed lime and salsa made in a molcajete ......the best !

I found a bigass prickly pear cactus bush in the woods where we drive RC cars. I cut off one pad, stuck it in soil, and it flowered and formed strong roots. Soon i'll have my own cactus bush :)

Half cook, let them rest on a plate with paper towels under it, then fry. You’ll get more of a tender meat with fat texture. This works really well as a meat substitute for any vegan family member as well! And the more ingredients you add, the less you can tell it’s Nopal, but the 10-15 min rest after a half cook, then a fry takes away a lot of that slimy texture without taking out much flavor or moisture 👍
I love these. Me and my mom collect them during season. We clean them , dice them, boil them and bag them and store in freezer . We grew up eating them. No the prickly pear. But I did try it when I went to Mexico with my friend . The ones we got were green and so sweet. So delicious with red chili 🌶️ pepper 🌶️ powder and lime 🍋🟩.

I like to grill em along with beef when having a BBQ meeting with the family. To enjoy em the best, in my opinion, is sliced in small cubes, sautéed in olive oil with chopped onion, zucchini and garlic, then seasoned with salt and black pepper. Once done it goes on salads and as a topping or filling for tacos.
The Mexican ladies I use to work with at red Robin used to make those tacos with cactus in them and they were super good. Shout out to Constantina, Veronica and Nancy.

These taste so good! Make sure you peel the skin properly bc they have tiny prickles which don’t hurt but can get stuck in your mouth and are super annoying. Also it does NOT taste like watermelon and bubblegum what 😭 it tastes like a mix between tomato kiwi and strawberry! Also they stain a lot so be careful
I grew up in southern Arizona, and my grandparents had these in their yard. Theyre absolutely delicious as jams or jellies, and they go really well in beef or chicken heavy dishes. Fair warning, they DO have small, thin needles inside them, but they dont hurt for the most part, they can get stuck in your gums, but theyll go away on their own after a day or two. Mostly you can avoid them if you scrub the outside and rinse off your cutting board before cutting anything.

I think the kind for this is Xoconostle. That has a more sour taste than sweet. They look exactly the same and grow the same. That one is great for recipes.
I haven’t noticed the fruit having a strong taste. A nice mild sweet taste. Very dense. Delicious. The pads are so tasty! Love them cooked any way. Never ate prickly pear until we moved to New Mexico. Lots of fun!
Cactus salad is one of my favorite, when I was a kid I used to go to a huge market in Mexico City, a lady used to sell cactus salad with fresh corn tortillas and queso fresco. Absolutely delish! 🌵

You have to cook them right. I've never had slimy nopales, they're almost like firm green beans in texture the way my stepmom taught me but much much better tasting. If they're slimy, you need to find someone else to make them😂
The Nopales (cactus plant) is one of the easyest to grow and have, they literally don't need any care, even water and they grow up and reproduce by themselves... Also they are a good food resourse, so it's one of the best plants for a surviving scenario or even just for a home garden

OR cut it up in cubes or small rectangles boil it add salt (some add baking soda to cut down the slime it'll let out while cooking Wich most people get grossed out because of the slime). Now once it is cooked you are free to add it to any dish, stew, salads, etc. it's kind of like a tortilla, has many uses!

I like to grill em along with beef when having a BBQ meeting with the family.
To enjoy em the best, in my opinion, is sliced in small cubes, sautéed in olive oil with chopped onion, zucchini and garlic, then seasoned with salt and black pepper.
Once done it goes on salads and as a topping or filling for tacos.

These taste so good! Make sure you peel the skin properly bc they have tiny prickles which don’t hurt but can get stuck in your mouth and are super annoying. Also it does NOT taste like watermelon and bubblegum what 😭 it tastes like a mix between tomato kiwi and strawberry! Also they stain a lot so be careful

I grew up in southern Arizona, and my grandparents had these in their yard. Theyre absolutely delicious as jams or jellies, and they go really well in beef or chicken heavy dishes. Fair warning, they DO have small, thin needles inside them, but they dont hurt for the most part, they can get stuck in your gums, but theyll go away on their own after a day or two. Mostly you can avoid them if you scrub the outside and rinse off your cutting board before cutting anything.

I think the kind for this is Xoconostle. That has a more sour taste than sweet. They look exactly the same and grow the same. That one is great for recipes.

I haven’t noticed the fruit having a strong taste. A nice mild sweet taste. Very dense. Delicious. The pads are so tasty! Love them cooked any way. Never ate prickly pear until we moved to New Mexico. Lots of fun!

My aunt used to make 'prickly pear' jam out of them. She would also make 'prickly pear ice cream' with the jam. My kids absolutely loved it. But it was way too sweet for me.

Flavor varies from the color of the prickly pear. It can be a bit bitter or really sweet. Both flavors are extremely refreshing when cold.

You have to cook them right. I've never had slimy nopales, they're almost like firm green beans in texture the way my stepmom taught me but much much better tasting.
If they're slimy, you need to find someone else to make them😂
The Nopales (cactus plant) is one of the easyest to grow and have, they literally don't need any care, even water and they grow up and reproduce by themselves... Also they are a good food resourse, so it's one of the best plants for a surviving scenario or even just for a home garden
Also, they're considered an invasive species in some places because someone probably threw a piece of it and it just grow.

OR cut it up in cubes or small rectangles boil it add salt (some add baking soda to cut down the slime it'll let out while cooking Wich most people get grossed out because of the slime). Now once it is cooked you are free to add it to any dish, stew, salads, etc. it's kind of like a tortilla, has many uses!
