How to Get Lifesaving Water from an Agave Cactus

- In the desert water is often the number one survival priority. If there is no river or spring then what can you do to get water? Cactuses retain large amounts of water inside of them but that water is often mixed with toxic compounds that can cause more harm than good if you consume them. But there is a way to get safe drinking water from certain species of cactus. In this video I'll show you how to get water to drink from one of those species.

After watching such videos, you understand how fast time flies and you try to imagine how many generations of people also sat on these stones while carrying out their life’s worries.
Yes, I try to imagine how they lived day to day. What events took place where I was.
😘😘
Rings in the rock;)
I think this is southern Cal. Maybe the Mountains due East and South of L.A. perhaps?(I did not think White Sage thrived in the Palm desert heats, we have harvested it years by journeys there up Mountains west of L.A.
Beautiful lands, more survivable than any city, by my experience!(Rather live and die out here/there than any concrete jungles, tried that a couple decades,-sad dystopian indoor maintenance does not maintain self I've found....Thank You Chad, see u years, you are great and humble brother, maintain.
I’m happy you are familiar with the outdoors and the wonderful natural gifts.
I don't know if anyone goes out into the wilderness with you on these trips but your videos always have that authentic "Survivorman" (one man and a camera) type feel to them.
If that be the case then I'm imagining all the shots you do are very similar to how he does them. For example: finding a spot, setting up the shot with the camera, walking back or forth to get footage of you walking either to or from an area and then going back to get the camera and setting up the next shot doing this several times on your way to the destination, rinse and repeat. Appreciate 🙌
I wouldn't last a second in your shoes, but I watch because I appreciate the nature around you
You would if you had to
No entiendo porque no usa un machete para que complicarse tanto si para eso lo inventaron, ahora es difícil sobrevivir porque no hay lo que había antes.
I really like your videos. They make me fantasize about living like this instead of being in the city madness. I have some survival training and experience and totally appreciate how time consuming and hard it is to live this way. However, it is very rewarding at the same time. Agave are one of my favorite plants because they are so useful for cordage and for food. I eat the flowers all the time when I'm hiking or backpacking in southern California. They are very tasty. As you likely already know, the native Americans would dig up the plant and roast it for food. The local Kumeyaay are starting to bring back this tradition and are doing annual roasts. Keep the entertaining videos coming!
Enjoy your hikes outdoors now because it is really beautiful this time of year. I do know about cooking agave hearts in an earthen pit. I have wanted to do this a long time but I don't want to go through the experimental stage with whole plants because it kills the plant. I would love to attend a roast by the Kumeyaay and learn from them.
@@ChadZuberAdventures This is a great video about Kumeyaay culture and food preparation:

This idea of fantasising this kind of life is so interesting, because when I mentioned such a thing to a war survivor his response was very different. It's very weird how much the ones that live in the comfort of our own homes crave these survival mode, while others live in it. We just crave it because it's a choice, you get up and choose to go to a deserted island, or down a cave or wathever there is. When you become a subject in these things and you have no choice it's such a different story. And yes I get the craving of exploring and all that. We all have that.
@@user-mi3cp6cp5q So great
Don't worry we'll live that fantasy in a decade, this country is going down the toilet, we will use all those survival training, thank God for this guy and others who teach how to survive in the dessert or what ever enviroment they are.
Your videos have a very high frequency from beginning to end, and watching them purifies me🙏Thank you
Thank you for watching.
Been watching a lot of building shelters and thinking I could live in these. What I really enjoy about Chad is he shows the survival after the build ❤❤❤
Yeah, the primitive way of life is what fascinates me the most.
I don’t really care whether agave is a cactus or not- that juice looked really life saving in the desert! I’d definitely drink it! I’m going to the desert in a few days- I’ll remember this video if I get stuck, - thank you!
Yeah, it really makes no difference how it is classified. Taxonomy of plants changes throughout time too. It's just a manmade system and doesn't affect the real life applications of the plant.
Well said sir.
An agave is a succulent plant also is native from the American Continent
Chad's muscles shook as he sawed the bone sample, very impressed by Chad's brother's body. Hope you have a wonderful week.
Thank you. You have a great week too.
Yes, his muscles are very well-toned. They get a lot of use.

Glad to see native man on TH-cam. I value their opinion because they know how to survive in a harsh environment. I saw the way he saw the Cactus leaf which telling me he knows what he is doing.
Agave is not a cactus.
He’s been watching the learning channel, he don’t seem like a real native
@@joseprado4627 He doesn't seem to be but put on a good act.
Man, I gotta say bro, your cinematography has improved a lot over the years, and you were already a pretty great cameraman/visual director. That 1st person shot was really cool, and very well done.
This landscape gives me a lot of creative opportunities for videography. Thank you for your comment.
Yup I'd definitely drink that, if the old people were smart enough to use it to help them survive and thrive in that environment anyone would be a fool to ignore them. I love the fact that you showed us the mortar holes, what an incredible people they must have been. It's also really interesting to learn about the different processes and plants especially because I'm on the other side of the planet, and I live in what's considered the harshest environment in southern New Zealand but it doesn't hold a candle to this environment. Thanks again Chad for taking time to show us another fascinating video 👍👋
I trust the history of the ancient people more than modern science. Modern science is little more than marketing campaigns for corporations. I had been to this area many times before but I never saw those mortar holes until this day. I was so happy to find them. Evidence of an ancient culture carved in stone. I can only imagine how they lived.

This is awesome Chad thank you for the knowledge. I'm glad to see you're still enjoying life after all this time. Looking forward to the next lesson 🤙
This is the only life I enjoy
When I was younger, we found a big burn midden in the Guadalupe mtns. Turns out natives were using them to cook hundreds of agave hearts. Specifically it was lechuguilla agave. Very useful plant.
thank you so much🥰.I LOVE YOU
Thanks Chad you give me peace over troubled times, all the best to you and your family ✨💖✨
Thanks and blessings to you
Experiences of survival skills will be used in the right time. I learned how to survive in the jungle, and 40 years ago, I drove the little boat to cross the Pacific Ocean to escape from the Communist regim in Vietnam. I survived so easily 3 months at the island that has a wild environment . Now I am in Canada.
That is awesome how you extracted the water and i was surprised at the quantity of water received.I know enough to not starve to death here in the south, but it would be a grim existence for me. Thanks for the lesson and i look forward to more.
I really like the spot you choose to cook and rest.
So nice.
It's a wonderful spot
XD
Thank you again for a wonderful video. I live in a cold climate and we are waiting for spring. Tomorrow we are expecting a snow storm. So it is nice to have some escapism by looking at your beautiful desert condition. It’s lovely to see that the spring is there already!
Spring comes early here but it lasts only a very short time then it will be so hot and dry.
This desert looks beautiful. It must host interesting plants. I grow up in a south-east Asia country so things are pretty wet/humid.
Since I live in the desert this was nice to know. I will have to try the palm fruit. We make agave tea which is supposedly healthy.

I see that agave and I cringe!!! I see the juice and I break out!! Lol.
100% would process it in a survival situation!
Desert is blooming, I got a good idea where you are with the palm berries, good thing they were low! Lol.
I never had a reaction other than minor itching that lasted ten minutes. Then I read about it online and learned that people get terrible sores and breakouts from the sap of agave.
I’m pretty sure I sent you pictures of my reaction.. it wasn’t fun lol

Another excellent video. The flowers are so beautiful and seeing how you get water from the Agave leaf is interesting. My "hubby" heard the sound of scraping and asked if you were scratching a lottery ticket. I told him in the desert, survival us kind of like a lottery.
I think chances of survival are greater in the desert than with the lottery. Hahaha.

I've seen many of your videos Chad. Your survival skills and knowledge is extraordinary. Very interesting to watch. Wonder if you would think about giving seminars to small groups or individuals and actually take people on trips like this and teach them to use these skills. Making your own bricks out of clay and then building a structure as well as the ways you cook and trap food.. amazing
I would love to do all of that. Maybe in the future I'll be able to make that happen.
Isn't it beautiful how nature provides? I love that.

Hi Chad. I'm from Mexico... I've been watching your videos for several years now, but this is the first time I've left you a comment. and well, I really enjoy each of your videos. How I would love to be able to live your primitive form. It would certainly be extraordinary... Without a phone, taking everything away, it would be wonderful to be able to experience that. I've always wondered what it would be like to spend a night in your hut. It would certainly be wonderful.
Greetings friend.
And sorry if my english is not very good.😊
Tu ingles está perfecto!... Te encantaría pasar una noche primitiva en la choza. I feel so much peace when I'm there. I feel so much peace in all the natural places I stay at. Where do you live in Mexico? There are wonderful places to do this in Mexico.

I am from the state of Jalisco. And of course in Mexico there is a lot of variety where you can live a primitive lifestyle.

Chad, how do you keep your skin from aging from the sun?
My skin is aging, but not as fast as most people. I eat a very healthy diet that nourishes the skin. I often apply oils, seaweed, or even certain cactus on my skin.
thank you... another enjoyable video
It was a great harvest Hnnn
Well i remembered something

Note to self: A clay pot and matches......never leave home without them. Great video!
No! Forget the matches. Just bring sticks.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Really fun watching your vids man. Luv the desert!
It fascinates me how tribes came to discover this process in order to be able to eat something that is harmful in principle
Great Video & Great Channel

I believe much was learned simply by accidental exploration. At some point humans realized that cooking softens food and makes it easier to eat. At some point they came to realize that water was stored in plants. Through trial and error they would test and learn. I still practice this. Google doesn't know everything. Wikipedia doesn't know everything. There are so many mysteries remaining to be discovered.
Really your videos getting back to our roots.

Spring is beautiful, I suggest collecting as much green grass around the house as you can, chop it up and throw it into the compost pile. During the trip, collect more desert plants and plant shrubs, grass, if you get desert trees near the house. This will help retain moisture in the soil and will provide shade and protection from the heat.
There isn't much grass in this area nor around my hut. Grass is really scarce.
@@ChadZuberAdventures You can trim the grass without affecting its growth.
Try propagating plants by cuttings.
There are many agricultural methods for restoring vegetation in harsh climates.
@@user-hy9eu2zp5z Restoration of vegetation is where it has been lost. Vegetation has not been lost here. This is the natural state. But there just isn't much grass to collect. Cuttings don't root in really dry soil either. I used to propagate a lot of plants at the house I grew up in. I used a greenhouse most of the time and the climate was very good there. In the desert it is a bit more tricky and timing is very important. Right now I have too much other work to do.
Perfect work !
Hay padre yo pensé que avía visto a rambo El de la película 🤭 Dios le bendiga
Not sure if it is a good tip but you could consider making a small foldable chair or step ladder for when you need to reach high places. It might be useful when you're foraging from trees and tall bushes.
I've been making cordage from banana stems but i have agave too. Can you make a video showing how to extract the fibers? I tried peeling it and lettrit dry but it didn't work.

Hello Chad. I am very curious about one thing. In the conditions like that your hands are not always clean, very often you have to deal with that and i.e. eat with dirty hands. Did you have some problems with that or just your immune system is strong enough?
It's important to recognize the difference between dirt and dangerous bacteria. Especially out here in the dry desert dangerous bacterias are, in my opinion and through my experience, largely non-existent. What you see on my hands is actually agave juice and dust. Nothing harmful with that. In fact, the agave juice has lots of saponins that actually cleanse. So, no, I have no worries to be eating with "dirty" hands.
Yes, I would definitely drink it.
