Hey, since you seem to be the most knowledgable out of all the Nikon and color grading experts I'd love to get an answer from you on a very stupid question of mine: Why and how are photo RAW and video RAW so different? Like how did I shoot years and years of RAW photos without thinking about LOG curves, ETTR, never did anything look gray, never were I unable to recover things and also my ISO wasn't abruptly bumped to 800. I've done a lot of research the past weeks and I now know why all of this is necessary for capturing the most dynamic video, I guess the question is, why it was so much simpler when shooting photos. Thanks in advance! :)
Exactly my question as well. Looking for valid info on the technical background to what RAW video is, in it's essence. There seem to be some major differences between stills and video. For example, is raw video still bayer mosaic based? How come we can change ISO after exposure? Is that "true" ISO shifting?
wow good to know about the blue colors way out of line with N RAW. but great break down video. this is what I was looking for. Always hated the N LUTS and always do Color transform and make my adjustments as needed but had no idea about the blues. Im actually going to pick up your LUT! I like it! Thanks!
Thanks man, really helpful and the gamut LUT for nlog is a great starting point. I also have LUMIX cameras and am trying out my Z9 for video. I must say that the raw video is better than I expected, I can easily use it next to my S1h. Still I have to be really careful to expose properly and mind the settings. Panny's are easier and have more video centered features like shutter angle. I keep using both cams without choosing for/investing in an ecosystem further. What is your opinion on the latest Nikon nraw / nlog, does the Nikon video future look bright?
Could you share a link to the white papers you mentioned at 14:03 ? Out of all the research i have done, I can't find this info from them for the 8 and 9. They have this info for the older 6 and 7 cameras, but not the 8 and 9. Just curious, but your video is very helpful!
From my tests, you're better off over-exposing N-LOG by 3 stops and pulling it back. I think Paul Leeming (Leeming LUT) also found this to be optimal but his is I think around 3.33 stops over. Basically, DO NOT expose N-Log "properly". You'll files will be way cleaner if you push 2-3 stops over and pull it back. Works for H265 or RAW.
3 stops is insanely high. You will lose so much highlight data just to protect your shadows. We recommend exposing with Middle Grey as your target and not Highlights as skin-tones live closer to 50-60 on the IRE scale which is our main focus when filming. Yes you get the cleanest shadows by over-exposing with the Leeming recommendation, but you also lose highlight information and have slight weird results in the spectral highlights in certain scenes. I have tons of his LUT packs and have tested them extensively. They are great, but I constantly hear people having issues executing exposing for highlights properly in every setting. Middle grey or Skin tones is a better indicator of exposure in my opinion. Just our preference though.
I believe it's always better to ensure correct exposure. Use a light meter for accuracy. Overexpose if your scene contains significant dark areas, but avoid clipping the highlights. Also, excessively adjusting the levels can introduce banding, as the values are not equally divided in a log, if I recall correctly.
Just making sure, you're saying gamut LUTs will provide the same looks that are shown on the website with the Nikon Z9 footage. I see Canon, Sony, and Panasonic mentioned on the website. I know this sounds like a really stupid question, but I don't see Nikon mentioned on the Gamut website and my budget is restrictive. Thank you!

can you tell me what your project settings are and color management tab looks like in davinci for N RAW?? for some reason the colors and contrast I see while editing in davinci are less saturated and more dull looking after I export it and watch it on my iPhone or uploaded to dropbox. in other words, overall color and picture looks more vibrant in davinci and id like to replicate it in the exported file. And yes, I'm using yo ur LUT. I really like your LUT but can't seem to get the exported file to look identical with the colors and contrast as it is in the davinci player
Thankyou Gamut, have been using our timbre luts with a nikon in camera flat profile with z9 footage which is great. But ive never been able to achive the beautiful footage i get from my BM6k with buttery luts. Question, is it advantages to film in nraw 4k with log or am i going to get a similar result with 4k H256 with the gamut log conversion. (nikon nlog luts are terrible)
You will get very similar results in h.265 as nraw. You can use gamut’s BaseLUTs for both and they will look almost identical. Nraw texture and some subtle other nuances will look different than filming in a compressed codec.
Something is off here. It seems like you’re using overexposed footage and then making some incorrect conclusions based off of your corrections for the overexposure.
I overexposed the footage because when exposing at Nikons recommended middle grey, the noise is much more noticeable when it converts middle grey to 42IRE for rec709. So when I expose brighter and convert the footage, the noise is much more manageable and worth that adjustment even though it’s limiting just a tiny bit of highlight information.
Yep, but a CST in resolve places it around 38, their Z9 LUT places it around 37, and the updated Z8 places it around 32 which is extremely low in the shaodows. 40IRE is where we place middle gray for our LUT by splitting the difference of 37 and 42.

Yes. No more than one stop but closer to +3/4.

How do one set the camera IRE? zebras??? I normally try to expose for skin. But if no skin can be found just old scape or City, how would one expose??
A question, do you do your grading on a 1st Log node before the Gamut Conversion Base Lut, Or on the same or following nodes
Both options produce different results. For exp and WB it’s on the node before the conversion. Then the look is after.

Did you try color transforming to bm color space and using that same lut?

The only N-Log paper released by Nikon puts 18% at 35IRE.
