I LOVE working at DTC. When first started, i was a senior in high school. It was the beginning of summer between my junior and senior year. When i applied i was actually 16 years old and started working once i turned 17. I knew absolutely nothing about tires before starting. When i was first hired, i was put into the office to just talk and asked a few questions then was kinda just shoved out into a training cell. Unlike basically everybody, I was never shown the pre training videos so i was just kinda tossed out there to figure things out by myself. That is the way I learn and i loved it. Hands on work rather than watch a video then try it for yourself. I have now worked there for 2 1/2 years and still love every day of it. I was never taught which sensors go to what, i was never taught what the paper work said and what it meant, I never even knew what the tire size meant. I had to figure these things out over time but it is an amazing thing to figure out on your own. The starting pay is competitive for the surround area you live in but get raises fairly quickly to exceed the competition. Lately for me, I have been struggling in school and have been thinking of becoming full time for the benefits as well as the possibility of tuition assistance when I am emotionally and mentally ready to continue the schooling. Within Discount Tire, you can become close to many employees like at our store. I have visited 3 stores within my region and the people working there really felt as if they were just there for the money and not the experience or Discount Tire Dream. Our store has become my second family and I love every single one of them. I have a close friends who moved back out to Cali from our region and we still talk at least 3 times a month to catch up. When you meet the right people within the company and the right store, work will become fun rather than just an exercise that is hurting your body. You'll fight through it because you love those boys, or girl as well in some cases, and you want the best for yourself as well as the manager or other full-timers. If you have read this far, I truly believe that if you are thinking of joining Discount Tire, you should try to do it. Make a family at the store you work at and life will be great. Thank You

But now it's been 2 and a half years and I'm like "an angel" when they see me walk up. If you're thinking of joining, do it. It's a great opportunity and an awesome place to be. Everyone starts off slow at some point in their life. You'll make it there, I promise, if you put in the time and commitment. For us, we have 1 guy who seemed like a super slow guy, he became our inventory guy and he used to be super slow at that anyways. Now he can put up 200-400 tires away and make it look neat in just 1 day by himself and that's badass. Just put your mind to what you want to do there and excell at it. Lately, I've been trying to study the sensors to become the best at the store for knowing what sensor to use without looking at the sheet of paper they give you.
@@picklerick834 I mean, idk how it is at other stores but they do typically ask the younger and newer guys to get the dreads but for us, the air checks go from the baby on the team all the way to manager. We all do air checks.
I worked there for over 4 years for two different managers. It wasn’t a bad gig, especially if someone needs a job they can get into with minimal education, or possibly even a family to support. They did work the dog shit out of me, but it never went unnoticed. There were some dumbasses there, but that’s anywhere. I was able to support myself for a while, until I decided to move on. Even then, my manager supported what I was doing. I miss it from time to time.
The discount tire store i worked at was amazing. Discount is great at teaching people to work hard for what they earn. A great get shit done and get out job.

I am a long term Discount Tire customer. I hope they treat their employees well. I can sense that they are under tremendous pressure to produce. To be honest, I wish that I took on a job like that after high school. I respect the guys in the bull pen. The sales crew is pretty good too. Some seem to know a lot about tires, some are interested in making the sale. That's important too. Bottom line, I hope that Discount is paying their employees well. They are one of the largest, if not the largest tire retailer in the United States. There must be a reason for that.
I love my job at discount. I love the banter with my crew and I love trying to beat whoever I’m mirroring the car with. I wanna be first 🤣 lost legit 100 pounds and now when I start hurting I push through that shit. You get paid to go to the gym
I was born in this company and work in it too. He is just not built for it. I have been working there for 6 months now and I have been around 3 different stores. Different stores run way different than another and can be a way better experience.
My cousin works at discount tire in Colorado and he said that it is very similar, overworking for standard pay, especially now in California wages always increasibg
I do the tire delivery for the stores and yup most of the guys there are young specially with the new rule of a must shave everyday lol but dam they work and some of them are really fast. Plus the music it seems like they having fun definitely a nice place to really learn the meaning of hard work.
It' sucks worked there for three months, pay is shit they yell at you to go faster, they break labor laws etc. U will have better time working in construction
It’s been 10 years so far and I love it. Started in Indiana and now in Florida. They’ve always taken care of me and my family. If you can’t do the manual labor it’s not for you, but you deal with people of all walks of life everyday. Yeah I’m tired, but man up. Pays my bills and a lot more plus we are number one for a reason. 🙏🏽💪🏽☝🏽🙌🏽👏🏽
DT works the absolute shit out of you. Only way to get past it is to get used to it. Sounds kinda bad, which at first if you're not used to it, it is, but being able to absolutely haul ass for an 11 hour shift and busting out cars like it's nothing is an awesome feeling. Plus the guys you work with that also bust ass are usually awesome dudes(and gals).
@tyronesmith3812 If I'm working an all day shift(7:30-630) that's a total of 10:30 hours worked on the clock, you get one 30 minute lunch and that's it. Every day I either bring two protein shakes and a lunch or one protein shake, a lunch, and either a protein bar or beef jerky. Idk about every DT, but mine has a mini fridge downstairs where we work so we can put either food or drinks in there. So every day at 11 I'll drink my shake, shortly after go to lunch and eat rice and chicken, and then whenever before close eat whatever else it is I've brought in as my second source of protein. You've just got to find time in between cars to eat everything lol.
I had lots of fun working at Discount Tire Worked at TXD 51 lots of great memories working with all the guys and lots of fun while doing the job. of course the cold days suck, cant feel your hands and especially if its raining...oof.

It can definitely be a people connection place to work if you get promoted to an assistant manager position. Which isnt too hard if you have a good attitude.
I was expecting you to run them down and talk about how bad it was. Was very pleasantly surprised you had a good review on it. Seems like people will always find something to complain about. Nothing in this world is perfect.
I worked at DTC for 15 years the fastest time we got a car in and out was 4 minutes. We we're busy as all get out but after work we'd sit in the parking lot and drink beer. Thus was back in the 90s. I also got in really good shape tossing tires and putting them away
@Daniel Brice when u have 3 or more people working on one car it makes it go faster. This was on a Honda civic with 13 inch tires. Plus in the 90s we used a regular dynamic balance machine not as high tech as it is today.
@@BabyJesus420 It's a tire. They aren't that complicated to replace. I barely changed a tire for the first time today (individually, not with professional equipment or knowhow) and it only took maybe 8 minutes for one tire. I didn't know how to use a jack at all until today lol, that took the longest. With multiple people and a lot of experience, changing all four tires could be done in like two minutes, maybe less if everyone is really competitive.
This was nice to watch - hearing someone else’s opinion on what its like to be a tire tech. I currently work at Point S, and ya I can say I relate a lot this video. The worst part honestly is not being allowed the total freedom to make decisions on certain things. There are dumbasses so ya that type of system needs to be in place, but unfortunately for those of us that have plentiful experience and knowledge are put at a disadvantage.. I wish it was easier to progress and that it wasn’t so much about politics (I.e. How long you’ve worked there compared to the next guy)

Personally I really don't like working at DTC. The upper people treat the people who are part time, new to the job or both like crap. And its back breaking. I am some what fit but even still its really hard on the body. Hands are numb and cut up at the end of the day, ankles rickety and sore, back is all stiff, and much more only for just 12/hr. There isnt a whole lot of communication among the garage crew. The pre training program is all a bunch of bs. It's completely different working in the shop vs what they say is in the pre program. Nobody really seems to be willing to help you learn and get better, they just sorta yell and command you until you do. Its a shame that such a great man Mr. Bruce Halle has had a company that turned into a bag em' and drag em' style of shop. The training program tells you that quality is vital over quantity where in reality its the POLAR OPPOSITE. Quantity and speed over quality, oh "unless the customer has a nice sports/ supercar or new custom rims". Not saying that's how it is at every DCT, but sure is like that where I work at.
Yeah definitely agree with that, I literally fell asleep during the pretraining and tried to have multiple windows running the lessons at the same time cause it was taking soooo long, but yeah that’s why I got out of there and got a job at a restaurant where I got payed to where it was worth my time to put in the extra effort
yeah we all joke about it, we call 5:00 the "hour of power/send it." you don't have to do that though. I don't cut corners and my friend and I push 4 news in 13-15 minutes. pay is 14/hr, I've been at DT for a year exactly, and while I agree with the physically demanding aspect of it, you should get that checked out. either that or just get used to it. it's sink or swim. When I was new, I didn't even wanna show up half the time because I knew I'd just get yelled at constantly. But then, I turned into one of the best techs in the shop. It's truly just a "survival of the fittest" mentality. There have been many friends who've tried to work there that I completely turn down because I know they dont have physical capabilities, work ethic, or are just plain old lazy. while lots of people don't like that, I still recommenced it as a great first job as it teaches you how to work hard for what you get, how to take orders well, and to not be afraid to get dirty and get rewarded for the work you put in. In the least offensive way possible, from your comment, you seem like one of the guys who wasn't fast and competent enough to move cars at a reasonable speed, and wasn't physically capable of the job either. Jus' sayin, but that doesn't mean you're a bad person. it just means it's not the job for you, and I tell that to even some of my best friends.
I got hired after second interview and going in @3 today Fredericksburg bound area wish me luck boys!!! Plus I had to do a drug test but nothing to worry there, easy pass and no stress! Can’t wait to see how the crew works and acts with me. Even though I have no experience at all, I still got hired and will be in training process for a little min! Wish me luck again boys! Can’t wait to be in the crew and experience a new experience!!
Every time I go to Discount Tires or any other tire shop, the front desk guy always gives me the same bait and switch routine.... "I'm looking at my inventory and I don't have those tires in stock, but I do have similar brand in stock".
I just started working there first 2 days was the online training which bored me to death. I'm not worried about the getting dirty part but I am nervous about the physically exhausting part. I'm not super fit but I'm not super weak either. But I am definitely nervous. Today is probably gonna be the first day of hands on training or at least shadowing but I'm not 100% sure
Honestly it’s just an all around tough and stressful job, the nice thing about it is that you get bonuses though, but idk man, I tried to find a better place as soon as I could
It wasn’t bad at all! Hands on is really good, except they expect you to catch on pretty quick, after you learn speed then you learn how to try and stay as clean as possible while maintaining the speed then you look really good as a worker
I still work there now after 2 1/2 years and ill be honest, i never did the online training until one snowy day we had nobody come in until 11 so we got everyones computer stuff done and bossman saw that i hadnt done my new hire orientation because it said it was like 600+ days ever due :P Literally, its all easy once you know what youre doing of course. But think to yourself in your mine, Dont scratch wheels, but the tires are just rubber so you can hit those things and throw them and itll all be okay. Dont be a baby with things in the shop, be tough with it. If a wheel is stuck to a car, do what lineman do in football and try and "hit up into the pad" or the top of the tire with both hands.... or just put one lug on halfway and hit it from behind with a hammer. Simple little mental and physical tricks there
Tire technician was boo boo! They literally showed me one time how to do things and expect me to be the flash. Then they had me be air check guy which was cool but it's not consistent.
Working at discount tire was awful. I started working there 3 years before covid, volunteered to work through it (awful decision, should have just taken unemp.) and a little bit after in NV. Started at $10 and ended at $14.25. I quit with a 1 day notice after I found out new guys were being hired at $16/hr when I had been there for 5 years. The manager then told me I couldn't use him as a reference for future employment lol. Horrible place, everyone hates working there, a lot of alcoholism just to list a few. The company motto is "Making dreams come true" because they make it seem like anyone can get one of the few manager positions that actually pay well. It's all bs. The managers get bonuses based on the stores profits but business costs including payroll go against that so the managers are incentivised to keep you broke and begging for OT. DO NOT WORK HERE
I worked at DT for 16 months. Fun in the summer. It was death in winters which I quit both times in the winter. The salesman always screwed us with typo write ups. Free air and repairs, it's alot of slave services for free, in which could be paid for and raise the pay for employees who deserve better pay to have to listen to people who will inevitably be fired for harassing employees. I ate so many PBJs and did so many pullups back in the inventory though. The coworker competition in the back was motivating and fun.
As a tech doing everything from your wheelbarrow tire to heavy equipment, including custom wheels and high end supercars I can tell you that if you have to tell someone how to properly lift your vehicle, you need to find a better shop.
I dont know anything about tires or cars in general but ppl say its a good place to work for a first jobs... but im worried that i dont have much experience and if thay expect me to know everything before training then im screwed
Honestly the job is not working out for me I feel that I'm just making myself suffer because I want to, the mentors suck, some co workers tells you unnecessary stuff that makes you feel bad about yourself and not to mention they make you work like a dog because of how fast pace the jobs has to be and nobody cares about being your friend. I've been there for a month but honestly I'm going to be going somewhere else, I'm a undergraduate student and I don't have time to put up with work environments like that when there are better resources out there.
As a tech that's rare if non existent. When you work at discount tire, you start off at the beginning as a technician then you climb in promotion. Your oldest guys there is likely the store manager. Then from there it goes up into regional management. We have over 1200 stores nationwide and continue to grow at a very strong rate. We believe in being honest, doing hard work and looking out for the guy next to you. We are here for our community, for you and for our family.
They get on your case about your speed because the customers are constantly up there ass about how long it’s taking. It’s called the snowball effect it all comes from the top.
It's not just customers. They have a software that corporate can see, and when they see wait times longer than 15-20 minutes something eventually gets said.
Speed huh. But here's my question. My last set of wheels were scratched up by the folks at firestone when mounting the tires on the wheels and balancing them. I am buying new custom wheels, can I trust discount tires with them? Or does speed trump being careful with my new wheels??
Thanks. One other question for you, if you don't mind. I have a Discount Tire wheels and tires package arriving, within a day or two. I drive a current generation BMW 3 series, which has these plastic/composite jack points, under the car. When I had DT swap over my winter wheels I noticed their lifts were not long enough to touch both jack locations under my car. And there's no "seem weld" along the underside of the car -- just flat plastic under-body panels. So that time I had them use the portable floor jacks, and lift the car at the jack points. The two people working on my cars claimed they get 3-series in every day and use them on their lifts with no problem -- and also claimed to drive older 3 series themselves. But when I showed them the jack points, and my jack-pad adapters they didn't seem familiar with them, which I thought was odd. I use to do my own tire swaps, but my living situation has changed. Plus, in this case, they are moving over my TPMS to the new wheels anyway -- so not like I can do this myself. Do you think I need to be concerned about them using the lifts -- should I continue to insist the car be jacked up with the floor jacks? Or am I worrying about nothing, in your opinion? Did you guys get trained about the composite jack locations, for BMWs? THANKS!!
I would still insist on using the portable floor jacks as the lifts generally are only good for lifting on the pinch weld with the rubber blocks. If only half the jack points are reachable with the lift what I’ve seen people do is use the lift wth the blocks for the front, and just use one or two jacks for the rear jack points...that’s what we did with the bigger trucks and SUV’s. No, we are not specifically trained on the jack points, but Tesla’s are similar in this and those have to just lifted using floor jacks because of the underbody. I would still insist on them being lifted with the floor jacks, and I would also watch them from outside the bay just to make sure they don’t take any shortcuts. I’ve noticed other workers not taking their time or doing the wrong thing just to get the vehicle out faster more times than I can count when I worked there. Always watch, then they always do it the right way...even though it takes longer..you can also ask to have the senior master tech in the back to work on your vehicle. They usually wear the dress shirt or clean pressed collared shirt in the back with an embroidered name tag. Those have been there the longest and take safety seriously which is why they are promoted. But the one thing I can’t stress enough, is to always watch what they are doing especially because you have a background and know generally what they should be doing in the tire process like rebuilding the tpms instead of just reusing the old one
Show Me What I Need To Know, we generally know what we are doing. We get odd cars all the time and we find a way to get them off the ground. As far as 3 series go, they are so common that im sure every shop sees a few every day. Don’t worry, DTC would never damage your car and if they do, expect a copious reimbursement for the inconvenience.
The guys at Discount are nice, but they CANNOT follow directions. I had to take my car back 5 times within the month to get the tires balanced properly -- but that's a whole other thing. Anyway, about half the time they ignored what I said by putting the car on the lift anyway, adjusting the tire pressures (when I told them not to), etc. A couple times they also give me the car back and 2 tires would have 30psi and the other two 38psi. Just about every time they got dirt and grease on the seat of the beige interior, door handle, seat belt, etc. I love Discount Tire, but there's a serious disconnect between the people in the waiting area and the dudes that do the work in the garage.
Show Me What I Need To Know okay well one, if you BMW is rear wheel drive, the front tires will be a lower psi than the rear. we follow the door placard instructions. another thing is that i assume your BMW wheels are lipless alloys. that implies that balancing would be done completely with strip weights which are generally more difficult to get right if they are using an older more traditional balancer. of course it depends on your area. about the dirt and grease. yeah, lol got us there, we are definitely disgusting dirt balls by the end of every day. it’s just hard to get everything extremely right all the time. if you want it perfect, go on a saturday morning, we are prime

Every young man who didnt go to college needs to work at mavis discount tires and stay there to be promoted to store manager guys who dont get promoted are the ones who job hop abd been doing tires for ten years at 15 differebt shops. Or go to a shipyard at 18 and learn how to be a ship fitter and welder as combo guy 1 ut will teach you how to do your job abd task correctly 100 percent every time right procedure and make sure the steel you are fitting and fabercating are pulled over and cut with a torch and measured and fitted and tac welded up all correctly perfectly to what the blue prints say everytime cuse once you rush and take short cuts a few times and QA and QC guy catches it redoing your work at a ship yard as a welder or fitter is 10x harder to fix then it was to tale the extra 45 mins or hour to do it right the first time cuse that 2 hour or so task is now gonna take you 3 or 4 hours to grind it cut it loose re measure clean uo everything with a grinder then start over in a 120 degree metal compartment with a hot cuttibg torch washing your tac wekds or full welds out. I did ship yard from 18 till 28 made it to superintendent at 24 and left the ship yard abd worked as a project manager for a cobtractor got laid off after 6 years now work at mavis tires as a automotive tech doing all of the mechanic jobs I do eberything besides oil changes and tires other guys do that and im makkng really good money and love my job. Oh abd i was making 67k to 73k a year at 18 years old one month out of high school at the shipyarf as a helper abd making good money to learn a trade. Dont pay for trade school there is tons of free one fkr adults at night and ones fir high school seniors to learn how to be a ship fitter and welder to get to work asap right after geaduation and be able to pass test to be a 2nd class fitter or welder orcombo
I just hope the people commenting here who worked for Discount Tire are more competent then the boobs I just dealt with there. One guy says "minimal education"? That answers a lot of questions. There's a reason they call this "Discount" Tire.

I know very little about changing tires and stuff. I’m fit but I don’t have a whole ton of muscle. I do however have a lot of determination and work hard. Would you recommend I apply here? Thanks! That was just like me except for I was a skinny 17-year-old, honestly they taught me some really good work ethic that has helped me in all of my other jobs so I recommend you do for sure, I would make sure you have some thing else on the back burner so that you can leave there eventually, just keep your sights hi and keep your determination high and work twice as hard and everybody will learn to respect you more than some of the people that have been there for longer, one of the tricks I used to do Was stay light on my feet and always be moving, even on a slow day find something to keep yourself busy with. You should not be rushing with people's cars I seen plenty of people go to Mavis and have bad experience because the workers are working at a frantic pace and Making mistakes
@@dbamax what’s the best source for tire reviews? I’ve been using tire rack because my car uses run flats. Only options I have are Bridgestone Driveguard, Michelin mxm4 zp or Pirelli Cinturato p7. Some reviews say they’re amazing and some say stay away. I can’t seem to get a final conclusion
Discount tire runs rebates all the time and has in house financing. You can use their online service to compare tires which is pretty cool... I've spent thousands of dollars at walmart and have never got a discount sadly.

I mean you don’t have to, but like it’s a courtesy, just like giving a two week notice is a courtesy in itself, I would go along the lines of “found a opportunity worth exploring that would occupy my time to a capacity of being unfair to discount tire, and thank you for the experience and job”

I am a long term Discount Tire customer. I hope they treat their employees well. I can sense that they are under tremendous pressure to produce. To be honest, I wish that I took on a job like that after high school. I respect the guys in the bull pen. The sales crew is pretty good too. Some seem to know a lot about tires, some are interested in making the sale. That's important too. Bottom line, I hope that Discount is paying their employees well. They are one of the largest, if not the largest tire retailer in the United States. There must be a reason for that.

I was born in this company and work in it too. He is just not built for it. I have been working there for 6 months now and I have been around 3 different stores. Different stores run way different than another and can be a way better experience.

I do the tire delivery for the stores and yup most of the guys there are young specially with the new rule of a must shave everyday lol but dam they work and some of them are really fast. Plus the music it seems like they having fun definitely a nice place to really learn the meaning of hard work.

Currently I work 10+ hours a day for minimum wage , get my breaks cut , hours shorted , and work every weekend

It’s been 10 years so far and I love it. Started in Indiana and now in Florida. They’ve always taken care of me and my family. If you can’t do the manual labor it’s not for you, but you deal with people of all walks of life everyday. Yeah I’m tired, but man up. DT works the absolute shit out of you. Only way to get past it is to get used to it. Sounds kinda bad, which at first if you're not used to it, it is, but being able to absolutely haul ass for an 11 hour shift and busting out cars like it's nothing is an awesome feeling. Plus the guys you work with that also bust ass are usually awesome dudes(and gals).
How do you make that happen for bodybuilders like me who need to eat a whole meal every 3 hours?
@tyronesmith3812 If I'm working an all day shift(7:30-630) that's a total of 10:30 hours worked on the clock, you get one 30 minute lunch and that's it. Every day I either bring two protein shakes and a lunch or one protein shake, a lunch, and either a protein bar or beef jerky. Idk about every DT, but mine has a mini fridge downstairs where we work so we can put either food or drinks in there. So every day at 11 I'll drink my shake, shortly after go to lunch and eat rice and chicken, and then whenever before close eat whatever else it is I've brought in as my second source of protein. You've just got to find time in between cars to eat everything lol.

I worked at DTC for 15 years the fastest time we got a car in and out was 4 minutes. We we're busy as all get out but after work we'd sit in the parking lot and drink beer. Thus was back in the 90s. I also got in really good shape tossing tires and putting them away
@Daniel Brice when u have 3 or more people working on one car it makes it go faster. This was on a Honda civic with 13 inch tires. Plus in the 90s we used a regular dynamic balance machine not as high tech as it is today.

@@BabyJesus420 It's a tire. They aren't that complicated to replace. I barely changed a tire for the first time today (individually, not with professional equipment or knowhow) and it only took maybe 8 minutes for one tire. I didn't know how to use a jack at all until today lol, that took the longest. With multiple people and a lot of experience, changing all four tires could be done in like two minutes, maybe less if everyone is really competitive.
This was nice to watch - hearing someone else’s opinion on what its like to be a tire tech. I currently work at Point S, and ya I can say I relate a lot this video. The worst part honestly is not being allowed the total freedom to make decisions on certain things. There are dumbasses so ya that type of system needs to be in place, but unfortunately for those of us that have plentiful experience and knowledge are put at a disadvantage.. I wish it was easier to progress and that it wasn’t so much about politics (I.e. How long you’ve worked there compared to the next guy)

Personally I really don't like working at DTC. The upper people treat the people who are part time, new to the job or both like crap. And its back breaking. I am some what fit but even still its really hard on the body. Hands are numb and cut up at the end of the day, ankles rickety and sore, back is all stiff, and much more only for just 12/hr. There isnt a whole lot of communication among the garage crew. The pre training program is all a bunch of bs. It's completely different working in the shop vs what they say is in the pre program. Nobody really seems to be willing to help you learn and get better, they just sorta yell and command you until you do. Its a shame that such a great man Mr. Bruce Halle has had a company that turned into a bag em' and drag em' style of shop. The training program tells you that quality is vital over quantity where in reality its the POLAR OPPOSITE. Quantity and speed over quality, oh "unless the customer has a nice sports/ supercar or new custom rims". Not saying that's how it is at every DCT, but sure is like that where I work at.
Yeah definitely agree with that, I literally fell asleep during the pretraining and tried to have multiple windows running the lessons at the same time cause it was taking soooo long, but yeah that’s why I got out of there and got a job at a restaurant where I got payed to where it was worth my time to put in the extra effort
yeah we all joke about it, we call 5:00 the "hour of power/send it." you don't have to do that though. I don't cut corners and my friend and I push 4 news in 13-15 minutes. pay is 14/hr, I've been at DT for a year exactly, and while I agree with the physically demanding aspect of it, you should get that checked out. either that or just get used to it. it's sink or swim. When I was new, I didn't even wanna show up half the time because I knew I'd just get yelled at constantly. But then, I turned into one of the best techs in the shop. It's truly just a "survival of the fittest" mentality. There have been many friends who've tried to work there that I completely turn down because I know they dont have physical capabilities, work ethic, or are just plain old lazy. while lots of people don't like that, I still recommenced it as a great first job as it teaches you how to work hard for what you get, how to take orders well, and to not be afraid to get dirty and get rewarded for the work you put in. In the least offensive way possible, from your comment, you seem like one of the guys who wasn't fast and competent enough to move cars at a reasonable speed, and wasn't physically capable of the job either. Jus' sayin, but that doesn't mean you're a bad person. it just means it's not the job for you, and I tell that to even some of my best friends.

I got hired after second interview and going in @3 today Fredericksburg bound area wish me luck boys!!! Plus I had to do a drug test but nothing to worry there, easy pass and no stress! Can’t wait to see how the crew works and acts with me. Even though I have no experience at all, I still got hired and will be in training process for a little min! Wish me luck again boys! Every time I go to Discount Tires or any other tire shop, the front desk guy always gives me the same bait and switch routine.... "I'm looking at my inventory and I don't have those tires in stock, but I do have similar brand in stock".
That actually means they don’t have those tired in stock
I just started working there first 2 days was the online training which bored me to death. I'm not worried about the getting dirty part but I am nervous about the physically exhausting part. I'm not super fit but I'm not super weak either. But I am definitely nervous. Today is probably gonna be the first day of hands on training or at least shadowing but I'm not 100% sure
Honestly it’s just an all around tough and stressful job, the nice thing about it is that you get bonuses though, but idk man, I tried to find a better place as soon as I could

It wasn’t bad at all! Hands on is really good, except they expect you to catch on pretty quick, after you learn speed then you learn how to try and stay as clean as possible while maintaining the speed then you look really good as a worker
I still work there now after 2 1/2 years and ill be honest, i never did the online training until one snowy day we had nobody come in until 11 so we got everyones computer stuff done and bossman saw that i hadnt done my new hire orientation because it said it was like 600+ days ever due :P Literally, its all easy once you know what youre doing of course. But think to yourself in your mine, Dont scratch wheels, but the tires are just rubber so you can hit those things and throw them and itll all be okay. Dont be a baby with things in the shop, be tough with it. If a wheel is stuck to a car, do what lineman do in football and try and "hit up into the pad" or the top of the tire with both hands.... or just put one lug on halfway and hit it from behind with a hammer. Simple little mental and physical tricks there
Tire technician was boo boo! They literally showed me one time how to do things and expect me to be the flash. Then they had me be air check guy which was cool but it's not consistent.

Working at discount tire was awful. I started working there 3 years before covid, volunteered to work through it (awful decision, should have just taken unemp.) and a little bit after in NV. Started at $10 and ended at $14.25. I quit with a 1 day notice after I found out new guys were being hired at $16/hr when I had been there for 5 years. The manager then told me I couldn't use him as a reference for future employment lol. Horrible place, everyone hates working there, a lot of alcoholism just to list a few. The company motto is "Making dreams come true" because they make it seem like anyone can get one of the few manager positions that actually pay well. It's all bs. The managers get bonuses based on the stores profits but business costs including payroll go against that so the managers are incentivised to keep you broke and begging for OT. DO NOT WORK HERE

I worked at DT for 16 months. Fun in the summer. It was death in winters which I quit both times in the winter.
The salesman always screwed us with typo write ups. Free air and repairs, it's alot of slave services for free, in which could be paid for and raise the pay for employees who deserve better pay to have to listen to people who will inevitably be fired for harassing employees. I ate so many PBJs and did so many pullups back in the inventory though. The coworker competition in the back was motivating and fun.
As a tech doing everything from your wheelbarrow tire to heavy equipment, including custom wheels and high end supercars I can tell you that if you have to tell someone how to properly lift your vehicle, you need to find a better shop.
I dont know anything about tires or cars in general but ppl say its a good place to work for a first jobs... but im worried that i dont have much experience and if thay expect me to know everything before training then im screwed
I didn’t know anything! Making mistakes is how you grow! It really helped me build character!

Honestly the job is not working out for me I feel that I'm just making myself suffer because I want to, the mentors suck, some co workers tells you unnecessary stuff that makes you feel bad about yourself and not to mention they make you work like a dog because of how fast pace the jobs has to be and nobody cares about being your friend. I've been there for a month but honestly I'm going to be going somewhere else, I'm a undergraduate student and I don't have time to put up with work environments like that when there are better resources out there.

I want to know something. How old is the oldest discount tire employee? It seems like there is no one there over age 40.
As a tech that's rare if non existent. When you work at discount tire, you start off at the beginning as a technician then you climb in promotion. Your oldest guys there is likely the store manager. Then from there it goes up into regional management. We have over 1200 stores nationwide and continue to grow at a very strong rate. We believe in being honest, doing hard work and looking out for the guy next to you. We are here for our community, for you and for our family.

They get on your case about your speed because the customers are constantly up there ass about how long it’s taking. It’s called the snowball effect it all comes from the top.
It's not just customers. They have a software that corporate can see, and when they see wait times longer than 15-20 minutes something eventually gets said.
Speed huh. But here's my question. My last set of wheels were scratched up by the folks at firestone when mounting the tires on the wheels and balancing them. I am buying new custom wheels, can I trust discount tires with them? Or does speed trump being careful with my new wheels??
You can trust them if you request their most experienced tech, and then watch them mount them and you won’t have a problem

Thanks. One other question for you, if you don't mind. I have a Discount Tire wheels and tires package arriving, within a day or two. I drive a current generation BMW 3 series, which has these plastic/composite jack points, under the car. When I had DT swap over my winter wheels I noticed their lifts were not long enough to touch both jack locations under my car. And there's no "seem weld" along the underside of the car -- just flat plastic under-body panels. So that time I had them use the portable floor jacks, and lift the car at the jack points. The two people working on my cars claimed they get 3-series in every day and use them on their lifts with no problem -- and also claimed to drive older 3 series themselves. But when I showed them the jack points, and my jack-pad adapters they didn't seem familiar with them, which I thought was odd.
I use to do my own tire swaps, but my living situation has changed. Plus, in this case, they are moving over my TPMS to the new wheels anyway -- so not like I can do this myself.
Do you think I need to be concerned about them using the lifts -- should I continue to insist the car be jacked up with the floor jacks? Or am I worrying about nothing, in your opinion? Did you guys get trained about the composite jack locations, for BMWs?

I would still insist on using the portable floor jacks as the lifts generally are only good for lifting on the pinch weld with the rubber blocks. If only half the jack points are reachable with the lift what I’ve seen people do is use the lift wth the blocks for the front, and just use one or two jacks for the rear jack points...that’s what we did with the bigger trucks and SUV’s. No, we are not specifically trained on the jack points, but Tesla’s are similar in this and those have to just lifted using floor jacks because of the underbody. I would still insist on them being lifted with the floor jacks, and I would also watch them from outside the bay just to make sure they don’t take any shortcuts. I’ve noticed other workers not taking their time or doing the wrong thing just to get the vehicle out faster more times than I can count when I worked there. Always watch, then they always do it the right way...even though it takes longer..you can also ask to have the senior master tech in the back to work on your vehicle. They usually wear the dress shirt or clean pressed collared shirt in the back with an embroidered name tag. Those have been there the longest and take safety seriously which is why they are promoted. But the one thing I can’t stress enough, is to always watch what they are doing especially because you have a background and know generally what they should be doing in the tire process like rebuilding the tpms instead of just reusing the old one

Show Me What I Need To Know, we generally know what we are doing. We get odd cars all the time and we find a way to get them off the ground. As far as 3 series go, they are so common that im sure every shop sees a few every day. Don’t worry, DTC would never damage your car and if they do, expect a copious reimbursement for the inconvenience.
The guys at Discount are nice, but they CANNOT follow directions. I had to take my car back 5 times within the month to get the tires balanced properly -- but that's a whole other thing. Anyway, about half the time they ignored what I said by putting the car on the lift anyway, adjusting the tire pressures (when I told them not to), etc. A couple times they also give me the car back and 2 tires would have 30psi and the other two 38psi. Just about every time they got dirt and grease on the seat of the beige interior, door handle, seat belt, etc. I love Discount Tire, but there's a serious disconnect between the people in the waiting area and the dudes that do the work in the garage.
Show Me What I Need To Know okay well one, if you BMW is rear wheel drive, the front tires will be a lower psi than the rear. we follow the door placard instructions. another thing is that i assume your BMW wheels are lipless alloys. that implies that balancing would be done completely with strip weights which are generally more difficult to get right if they are using an older more traditional balancer. of course it depends on your area. about the dirt and grease. yeah, lol got us there, we are definitely disgusting dirt balls by the end of every day. it’s just hard to get everything extremely right all the time. if you want it perfect, go on a saturday morning, we are prime

Every young man who didnt go to college needs to work at mavis discount tires and stay there to be promoted to store manager guys who dont get promoted are the ones who job hop abd been doing tires for ten years at 15 differebt shops. Or go to a shipyard at 18 and learn how to be a ship fitter and welder as combo guy 1 ut will teach you how to do your job abd task correctly 100 percent every time right procedure and make sure the steel you are fitting and fabercating are pulled over and cut with a torch and measured and fitted and tac welded up all correctly perfectly to what the blue prints say everytime cuse once you rush and take short cuts a few times and QA and QC guy catches it redoing your work at a ship yard as a welder or fitter is 10x harder to fix then it was to tale the extra 45 mins or hour to do it right the first time cuse that 2 hour or so task is now gonna take you 3 or 4 hours to grind it cut it loose re measure clean uo everything with a grinder then start over in a 120 degree metal compartment with a hot cuttibg torch washing your tac wekds or full welds out. I did ship yard from 18 till 28 made it to superintendent at 24 and left the ship yard abd worked as a project manager for a cobtractor got laid off after 6 years now work at mavis tires as a automotive tech doing all of the mechanic jobs I do eberything besides oil changes and tires other guys do that and im makkng really good money and love my job. Oh abd i was making 67k to 73k a year at 18 years old one month out of high school at the shipyarf as a helper abd making good money to learn a trade. Dont pay for trade school there is tons of free one fkr adults at night and ones fir high school seniors to learn how to be a ship fitter and welder to get to work asap right after geaduation and be able to pass test to be a 2nd class fitter or welder orcombo

That was just like me except for I was a skinny 17-year-old, honestly they taught me some really good work ethic that has helped me in all of my other jobs so I recommend you do for sure, I would make sure you have some thing else on the back burner so that you can leave there eventually, just keep your sights hi and keep your determination high and work twice as hard and everybody will learn to respect you more than some of the people that have been there for longer, one of the tricks I used to do Was stay light on my feet and always be moving, even on a slow day find something to keep yourself busy with. Discount tire runs rebates all the time and has in house financing. You can use their online service to compare tires which is pretty cool... I've spent thousands of dollars at walmart and have never got a discount sadly.
