I prefer North & South to Pride and Prejudice to be honest. N&S is just a richer story and the social commentary makes it much more relevant in this day and age.

I really love Pride and Prejudice, but after watching North and South...it’s so much richer of a story because of the struggles, poverty and the love story. I think I’d take a Northern man any day. Lol... Hardworking, passionate and so much more! Just saying!

It's better than Pride and Prejudice for me. I like learning about the struggles of that time.

It’s a very good analysis. I’ve just visited the cotton mills where this miniseries were recorded

This was really good. I thought you would talk more about the social class issues at play here. Margaret is poor but has a lot of social currency and John is rich but has far less social currency. It's an interesting dynamic.

How come am i bumping into this video only now? The like is obligatory, for my part. Only one thing: I think this novel is a tad superior to P&P. There are more interesting topics (social and geographical divide, the Industrial Revolution...) and I personally find this love story more captivating.

I do feel that P&P is a very different type of novel, focusing more on ironic humour, social status and how the characters navigate a balance between love and the need for money/security. N&S, from what I've read, was very much written to widen understanding of the issues and suffering caused by industrialisation but Gaskell felt she had to create a central romance as a means to do so. She also had to be careful not to alienate her largely middle class readership. It's a credit to her as a writer that she expresses both the romance and the social issues so successfully. I love both books for different reasons.

Also touches on child labor. Imagine the under-developed lungs of a child breathing the cotton dust day after day. Very high child mortality.

Depends on which P&P you are referring too!! Colin and Jennifer are hard to beat! but this N&S is a great story too :)

they are both based on the classic novels and i can still say that n&s' storyline is still better than p&p's in the novel. 😉
