    I love this book, I have to reread a lot of scenes a few times before letting them go. I've read a lot of classics, and I think romance in North&South is the best of all I've ever read. I will read it again, many times.

    I didn't expect to love north and south at all when I first came across it but now it's earned a place among my favourite novels off all time.
    The relationship between John and Margaret is one of the best surpassing pride and prejudice even, they're so well suited and you can really sense the respect they feel for each other
    Your so right about the whole thing with Mrs. Thornton and Margaret Ive never thought about it that way til now, one if the reasons I love your vids because I see so many new ways if looking at these stories.

    I have read North and South, the first and so far only Gaskell I've read (although I definitely intend to read more!) and adored it. I mean, I won't say I'm quite as head over heels as you, but I already expected to love it and it just went above and beyond! I loved the respect between Margaret and Thornton and the way they worked together to this balance of views, the way they were willing to listen to each other and think about what others said and that's actually so rare in books? They are definitely one of my favourite fictional couples!

      I should soon have up a video about class in Victorian literature, not focused solely on the working classes but hopefully one that will be helpful for some recommendations. But if you haven't read Gissing's The Nether World or Gaskell's Mary Barton, you must :) - both exclusively about the working classes in the Victorian period.

    Thank you so much for your interesting and lively videos. I have to admit I discovered Anthony Trollope and Elizabeth Gaskell thanks to you. I have read all of Dickens' major works and just began Gaskell's with this. It is a wonderfully balanced and thoughtful novel. I had to laugh at the alternative title though, "Death and Variations". It's not quite a spoiler to say that a lot of people die...and in a variety of unsavory ways. As an older adult now and as someone who love meaningful literature, this is one of my favorites too. It briefly explores so many important topics and is unbiased in a way I can only long for today. At least I have many good quotes from it to add to Facebook now, though. We can only hope that people will eventually get tired of the reality of today and choose to look to some wisdom from past ages.

    I recently re-read N & S and like it even more the 2nd go-round. This time I appreciated the tenderness and goodness of John and Margaret. It's best not to read it right after the movie b/c the melodrama of the film might make the book seen pallid. But it's not, it's just so nuanced and gentle. And so romantic in its own way.

    I really enjoy your review of victorian literature. North and South also has an interesting theme of whether one should marry for love (like Margaret's mother) who ended up with complaints on lack of a comfort living and with a husband not exactly her soul mate either; or marry for money like Aunt Shaw. Would be nice had the book gave a bit more insight into Mrs' Thornton's marriage

    Like you, I think this book is superior to Pride and Prejudice. I found the examination of social class interesting as you mentioned regarding where the "new money" manufacturers fit into the social strata. I found it particularly interesting that Mrs. Thornton did not buy into the social convention of the Hale's superiority and her son did. You would think that the older generation would give more deference to that than the younger. Initially, Margaret seems more class conscious than her parents do as well. What do you think?

    I preferred the 1970's BBC version, which is floating around TH-cam somewhere. This and Mary Barton are the two best industrial novels imo. Hard Times and Shirley were disappointing. Bleak House reminds me a lot of North and South. It has a similar wide range of classes and characters. I quite liked the use of dialect, by people like Mr Higgins. In the 200? BBC series, I noticed only one of the policemen spoke the accent, and they replaced 'clem' with 'starve'. Have you ever watched or read Nice Work by David Lodge?

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen the 1970s version, which I do enjoy, but I find it less naturalistic and somehow the sight of Patrick Stewart with hair is just unsettling. I agree that this and Mary Barton are the best industrial novels I've read. I haven't read or watched Nice Work but I'll look it up.

    • @KevTheImpaler
      @KevTheImpaler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's a long time since Patrick Stewart had hair. Regarding industrial novels, I suppose I should read Sybil one day, although I think that's more a social novel. You could make it one of next Victober's challenges: read a novel by a Victorian prime minister, or just MPs if you wanted to allow Tom Brown's School Days.

    I am still reading through the book but have finished watching the series. Cant agree more with you that Mr Bell does appear to be a little bit creepy in the series (although i have yet to get to know him in the book). Was perplexed to hear Mr Bell hinting to Margaret that he considered taking her as his wife. It was a rather awkward scene indeed.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, no idea why that did that in the adaptation!

    • @oni7050
      @oni7050 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@katiejlumsden Why the TV series’ adaptation changed things that are so much more delicate in the book? Because it is necessary in dramatizing information that often expressed by thoughts or a narrative voice in the book, and because it is inevitable when you must compress 600 pages into a 4-hour TV series.
      Some of the changes:
      1) Mr. Thornton's beating a worker - I don’t like this scene either, especially in his first appearance, but I can understand the screen adaptation’s need to present him at the beginning in the most extreme way they could in order to: a) to exhibit his hot temper; b) to create a conflict between him and Margaret. Remember they had to do it quickly and efficiently.
      2) Mr. Bell creepy nature in the adaptation - my best guess is that they wanted to cancel the Daus Ex Machina factor of the inheritance at the end of the book. The inheritance will look more “understandable” in the light of Mr. Bell’s intention to marry Margaret. My guess relies on the fact that they chose to let him sail to Argentina instead of dying. Mrs. Gaskell choice to "kill" both Mr. Hale and Mr. Bell abruptly is quite odd, to say the least.
      3) The end of the book vs. the end of the TV series - I must disagree with the notion that they are both good (as one of the comment said above). The scene at the train station is brilliant (!), while the end of the book is abrupt and too short. Mrs. Gaskell herself said (I read it somewhere) that the book was written as a series, each chapter published in a newspaper week after week, and she had not enough time to rewrite the end.

    I feel strange, because it seems that I'm the only one who didn't enjoy the novel... I watched Pride and prejudice, Emma, Jane Eyre etc, and i loved them. I haven't watched the bbc series of north and south tho. But honestly, i'm not too curious to watched, since I haven't enjoy the novel. I feel very confused about why this novel is so liked. I mean, per se it's good, but only on the description of the social parts, characters psychology etc. But the romance was so limited, and I could see a real romantic interaction only in the last two pages. Futhermore, i didn't really like Margaret character...
    I repeat, I am not implying that the novel is not good, but it is strange that I only see good reviews about the book. I feel strange that I'm the only one who didn't enoy it...
    I know it's a different genre, but i liked Hard Times more. Maybe because I had no romance expectations on this book, while I had many for North and south and got delusional🥺
