Phil seems more concerned with the dig than with 'performing' on *or* off the show. Compare this with Mr. May, who by all evidence is a reality TV 'car expert' (c.f.: Jay Leno) who enjoys buying & driving cool cars but has no significant experience in full restoration or major repairs. Worse, both on- and off-show we can see James May finds James May *endlessly* entertaining. I've neither seen nor heard any such about Harding's behavior, during or after Time Team's long run. .

May isn't merely knowledgable about cars and I suspect Phil knows a lot about other stuff beyond his profession. May likes his alcohol, too (why he owns a pub) and that alone would give the two lots to discuss. Archaelogy has a certain intellectual aspect, which I think May has. Of course, it could devolve into a discussion of the "real" Tony Robinson versus Baldrick. Who knows.
I wish this show, scrapheap challenge, antiques roadshow and songs of praise were all combined into a sunday night spectactular in which contestants built modern day viking raiding battle buses and then raided modern day churches and country houses to loot gold.
I always wanted to spend the morning with Mick. Picking his brain about mid evil times. Then from noon to 5 spend it in a trench with Phil picking his brain. Then Phil Mick and myself would meet Matt and Tony at a pub to finish up the night.
It's just as bad here in the States. You used to be able to slide the time bar forward to the end and start over and watch without ads. That doesn't work any longer. I've kept track through several episodes and also videos from other channels. Ads run about every 5 minutes. No matter how many times you watch it. I think it's TH-cam, not Time Time.🤬😂

As much as I love Time Team, not liking the compilations - or the short commentary things... give me full episodes!! i actually do have an attention span and really dislike the 3-5 minute things that so many others seem to want.
