Awesome 3D Printed RC Airboat

  • Today I designed and built a working 3d printed RC airboat! Very exciting and I'm happy with the results. I learned a lot from the boat we made a few weeks ago: • BIG 3D Printed RC Spee...
    Many of you left helpful comments that would better my chances to have a watertight 3d print, one of the most popular was to use flex seal in order to protect the PLA material from contacting the water. However, I increased the thickness slightly (4 walls/perimeters) and it worked beautifully!

  • @lasersbee

    4:18.. The acid in standard Silicone Sealant will corrode electrical wiring and bare PCB traces/pads over time.
    8:11.. Just change the Thrust line of the motor by tilting it down a bit. Like they do on RC Airplanes.

    • @jonipaananen9304
      @jonipaananen9304 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simon knows his thrust lines :D As you saw, the cg was straight below the motor, so there wasn't much to do with angles. Lowering was the correct thing to do. If it's possible to move the CG back (heavier battery), it would help to angle the motor up, or if the motor is moved back instead, then angling it down helps.

    That intro is unnecessary, very entertaining and proof that you take pride in the videos you do, at the same time. When I saw how high the propeller was mounted, I knew that the boat would have a chance of toppeling forward. You fixed it quite easily though. I saw this video a while back. It would be nice to see this blower function on a boat. It's not nearly as efficient as a propeller but still cool in a way. Great video :) th-cam.com/video/wg8ZbiC9IBw/w-d-xo.html

      Why are everyone so hooked on that word? Read my whole comment before commenting yourself! If you did that, you would've seen that I was giving him a compliment. I also gave him a video idea cause I thought it was cool. I like to be brief so I don't write an entire novel as a comment. I will write a longer one and in with more depth next time so people won't get offended.

      The guy in that video should get a 3D printer. I think that plane of his would be much better if some parts of the plane was 3D printed, except perhaps the wings. I suspect it might become too heavy if too much is 3D printed. But it was cool to see :)
      Electric RC has come a long way since I used to do it (90s?). I might start again, since I have a 3d printer now.

    In order to counter act the offset between the centre of thrust and the centre of drag, you need to add some down thrust to the motor mount - point the prop down a bit. That way the air stream from the rear of the boat is pointing up and helps to lift the nose of the air boat up and high throttle inputs - try 3 degrees first and see what happens and then change from there. Nice boat BTW

    You could add like a wedge under the hull, so it kinda floats on air. Like the racing boats. It also makes it more efficent. Also add some fins on the end of the boat, that helps against the twiching. Other than that this is a great Channel, great content. Keep it on!

    Hey Simon, I love your videos! If you intend to do more rc boats: you could design a waterproof box for all your electronics to fit in, in the future you´d be able to use this as a base for your standard components. Then use some spray foam inside the hull to practically make it unsinkable. (might be overkill though :-D )

    To use the larger props you could probably adjust the angle of attack to help push the back down a little. And it might have also been torque roll with the mass of the larger prop so some counter torque fins would probably also help.
