    Great video, but I just noticed a tiny inconsistency between the tab and what you're playing. In the Jambi riff from 3:22, the tab says to play a hammer-on between the F and G, but you slide between them. Not really a big deal, but I thought I'd point it out.

    • @OrienBand
      @OrienBand  6 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      Aiiiiii, I didn't even notice that.. And to make it even worse, I play a 5 (G) on the D string at 3:41 in the little fill, but I the tab says that it's an open string note on the G. It's still the same note, but it is a bit sloppy. Thanks for pointing it out!

    Flowing through tempos and time signatures like that is impressive.

    • @joystick2212
      @joystick2212 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I feel like truly counting beats and playing accordingly would be incredibly impressive, but I feel like it's usually just a memorization thing for those type of beats. Correct me if I'm wrong though!

    • @jonathancapps1103
      @jonathancapps1103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There tends to be a lot of counting and memorization while learning the music, but as you get familiar with it it transitions more to feeling the beat rather than counting it and muscle memory rather than actively recalling what the next note is.
      When I was in a band all we did was 4/4 or the occasional 3/4 time. I never had to count it. And a good 80% or more of what I played was muscle memory, except for solos and random improv.
      When Tool plays 5 or 7 or 11 beats per measure I can feel the beat without having to count it, but they like to change it up in places, and that can sometimes throw me if I'm not paying close attention.

    • @waldotorres8600
      @waldotorres8600 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When is ablut memorization i dont think time signatures are that important, at the end of the day your just playing the riff with muscle memory,not really counting how many beats are in thar riff, and in tempo is kinda the same

    Justin Chancellor is so creative, be just is literally the glue between Adam and Danny. Like the intro to Vicarious, the bass and guitar parts work so well together. Watching these vids has given me new appreciation for Justin, especially the parts in Aenima.

    • @OrienBand

      To me just about every Tool song is popular or would be easily popular on the radio. I'm grateful they're too long for the radio though, a lot of their songs still feel fresh on the radio, except sober. All these radio djs are talking about how they can't wait for the new Tool and then they're going to upset when every song is like 10 minutes long.

    I'm a guitar player, so my listening to Tool is very guitar oriented, meaning I pay most attention to guitar, with that being said, this video was eye opening (lol) to what bass parts are in Tool songs. Like, woah. H. and Right in Two for example. Mind blown. Awesome

    • @OrienBand
      @OrienBand  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Fuckin' A, man! Nice list, and the playing was excellent. Must have been hard to narrow it down to just 10
    If I was to do a list like this (if I was skilled enough!), mine would probably be:
    Forty Six & 2
    The Grudge (the main heavy riff)
    Schism (not the intro, but from the short fast bit near the end up to the outro)
    Parabola (main bass line)
    Disposition (always gives me goosebumps)
    Reflection
    Triad
    Jambi (literally any part of that song, what a masterpiece)
    The Pot (pre outro + outro riffs)
    Right In Two (the buildup and massive polyrhythm bit before the outro, like you did)

      @OrienBand  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here man, although I still think Right in Two is the perfect Tool ending, the trinity is my favourite ending.
      The Ibanez bass just caused too many problems. I did not like the sound of it and I felt like it under-performed. This bass is about 600$ cheaper and it sounds better. This bass does have some little issues, but at least the E strings sounds like a normal E string..

      Thanks! I think I'd probably only use one or two riffs from FI so I wouldn't chance much unless I'd do a part two or something. Haven't played bass that much in the last months to be honest.

    Just curious. Could it be a 3-2-0-0-2-2-0 thing on the A string on Reflection, instead of 2-2-2-0-2-2-2? With hammer-ons and pull-offs

      @OrienBand  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I honestly don't think so though. I have covered it multiple times now and I've never heard that sequence of notes to be honest. I could work as a jam though.

      That's awesome man, thank you so much for watching. I was hoping real people watched my videos, haha! Rosetta Stoned was hard as heck to decipher correctly, glad you enjoyed it. As for Tool videos and overall bass tone, I've ordered a Wal Mk2 which will be arriving in 2 years. Should be nice!

    what pedals did you use for the video, im really interested to know how you got that tone

    • @OrienBand
      @OrienBand  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a KHDK Abyss Bass Overdrive pedal for the distortion. The delay and the flanger parts were recorded with a modulation plug-in that comes with my Universal Audio audio interface, so no physical pedals.
      For the tone, I always just put the treble and bass really high, mid at 40% and you'll automatically get close to Justin's tone.

  • @liamjenkins82
    @liamjenkins82 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Amazing mate. If you don't mind my asking how do you get that kind of tone. I've been playing on and off for a while. One of things I've always struggled with is getting a sound I like. And I rely like this sound.
    I'm currently using a Washburn taurus t25 through an ampeg 500. I have a few pedals. Any help appreciated. Been a long time since I've listened to tool. Chancellor and commerford are the reason I even started playing at all. Cheers

    • @OrienBand
      @OrienBand  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! I also struggle a lot with the bass tone so I'm probably not qualified to talk about this, but the Tool tone is pretty weird. First of all, distortion is a must for tool. Not much, just enough so that it still sounds clear, but with that sharp distortion edge. I'm not sure what my settings were, but I usually use these amp settings for tool :
      Treble : 9/10
      Mid : 3/10
      Bass : 9/10
      You'll notice that it will sound a lot better immediately, but the bass boost can be a problem if you don't compress it which is something Justin always does. Then again, he uses 2 different amps for high and low and a 7000$ bass so you'll probably never get the perfect tone.

    • @liamjenkins82
      @liamjenkins82 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leo Bass Covers no the 7000 dollar bass might make it unachievable. Ha ha. But just a nice sound will help. Really appreciate your reply. Will dial them in some time this week. Thanks. Might be time to get back into it.
