During a long-passed archaeological excavation, a set of Gates were discovered. People quickly realized that these ancient passages lead to different realms and dimensions - providing brave and reckless adventurers with treasures beyond measure. Rynoka, a small commercial village, was founded near the excavation site providing refuge and a place for adventurers to sell their hard-earned riches.
Moonlighter is an Action RPG with rogue-lite elements following the everyday routines of Will, an adventurous shopkeeper that dreams of becoming a hero.
SHOPKEEPING
While conducting your business in Rynoka village, you can put items on sale, set their price carefully, manage gold reserves, recruit assistants and upgrade the shop. Be careful though - some shady individuals may want to steal your precious wares!
FIGHT WITH STYLE
Defeat various enemies and bosses, and revel in challenging and deep combat mechanics. Masterful control of your weapons, critical timing, careful positioning, and an understanding of your enemies and environment are crucial to your survival. How you battle your enemies is up to you.
MEET VILLAGERS
Get to know your neighbors as you restore the prosperity of this small commercial hamlet. Help establish new businesses and watch them grow in the idyllic community of Rynoka.
CRAFT & ENCHANT
Understanding the crafting and enchanting system is essential for your progression. Interact with the villagers to craft new armor and weapons, and enchant existing equipment. This creates a great deal of flexibility and spices up the way equipment is used.
GET THE LOOT
Access strange worlds through otherworldly gates and collect valuable items from exotic civilizations: resources, weapons, armors and peculiar artifacts. Hoarding everything won't be possible - use the unique inventory system wisely to take the most profitable loot with you.
OPEN THE GATES
Gates lead to different worlds. Each run is unique and forces you to make smart and calculated decisions. You never know what you will encounter next - that’s why you must be prepared for everything.

Just the small clips in this video were enough for me to know that this is a video game soundtrack to add to my "listen at work" list! Great review, loved the tone of voice you used throughout this one! It was like sitting down next to the hearth and listening to a good old fashioned story.

If you pay close attention to the review, you're basically a slave who work 24/7 with no sleep.
You start working during the day and dumpster dive at night.
The night job could cause your life.
To torture you, the game only let you carry a woman purse just to watch you make hard decision on what items to abandon.
They'll let you upgrade your gears but not your backpack.
I bought this one because of this stellar review and I was instantly hooked. What a brilliant game. It took me hours and hours to just get past the first dungeon because I just loved the cycle of collecting loot and selling it!

Got the complete edition for 13 bucks on the switch and holy shit. I was not expecting to be this hooked since I’m not a fan of rogue likes. It’s so good tho. I recommend 100%

It's a really nice and addictive game. Even bought it on discount so can't complain. The first dungeon was a hassle, but i made it through. Now I'm in the dessert and it is making me moooooh. But I upgraded my defense, now I must make it quick out. Yo, I'm the king of moonlighter. Let's make rynoka proud!
FYI, right now the game has a 75% discount on Nintendo switch online, annnnd the complete version on the game has a 70% (includes both moonlighter and moonlighter: between dimensions). It costs less than 10 dollars but only for one more week

I think I missed this review back when it came out! I loved playing Moonlighter and will go back to it to this day. A lot of fun dungeon crawling to gain items and then going through the pricing run as you try to find the right price to sell your items!

I was always an FPS player, just started playing RPG recently. Zelda BOTW was absolutely stunning to me but I can hardly find any other similar game. Got interested in Moonlighter before it released but still wondering whether it is gonna be suitable for me.

I bought the complete edition of this game yesterday and I am enjoying it so much..it has a learning curve IMO but once you get the hang of how the game works then it's really fun..I've been finding myself saying "ok,one more dungeon run and then I'll go to bed"..well,it's more like 3 dungeon runs and THEN I'll go to bed hahahaha..I didn't think I'd like this game,so I didn't get it when it first came out on the Switch..but I saw the complete edition had a good price on the eshop right now so I decided to give it a try..I'm so glad I did 😊

i have a theory on why games are being overpriced. i think we have the 'discount' section in the store to blame. i have been noticing lately that nearly every single game ends up in here after a very short period of time.
The new game gets the top slot in the 'new' section...after a week its off the list, then with a 'sale' price , immediately at the top of the discount list. Its not really a 'sale' . many off these games have already made the dev its money on steam or other platforms. what i do love to see is at least devs making the game the very best it can be. like you said, this had many bugs, but its a definitive version.
that makes switch unrivalled and all the games i have on it, i will treasure the console as it has all the best versions of games on it.
Theres about 150 games at all times on sale. so i have to admit..i just wait now. i can wait 😂. except for a few must have's.

The switch tax is because Nintendo is taking a larger cut of the sale than Steam or Sony.
The sale strategy on the eShop also goes like this: game gets forgotten and buried in the eShop and won't be seen unless specifically searched for... So they put it on sale, sometimes 90% off, etc. This gets a lot of copies sold and it ends up in the "Best Sellers" list for 2 weeks. So then it goes back to full price but still has that visibility, and some people buy it at full price simply because they see it (and that it's popular) and probably don't realize it was just on sale.
You have such a calming, yet detailed take on reviewing a game, it’s quite refreshing. I’d normally pass right by a game like this, but your in depth analysis pretty much sold me. Keep up the great work, def will subscribe!

Sorry Mark, I am a box type of guy, I have a few downloads that I have to play but must have the box version if I want the game, getting an expensive hobby this gaming I still think downloads should be below £8 after all no physical value added in production, transport ext, I expect Nintendo has already calculated the cost of server's so they will never be on a loser, my biggest grip is games like megaman or Sega Ages being released again and again at way over inflatable prices, come on guys £4.99 for these games i had them all on the original Xbox but I have to admit Xbox does some fantastic cheap classic games. Nintendo needs to look into this what you think??
This reminds me of Recettear : An Item Shop’s Tale ... the indie JRPG where you play as a shopgirl by day, and delve in dungeons by night to stock your store.
But that game was so obscure they probably didn’t influence each other at all. (I’m probably the only person on earth who bought it, lol.)

SwitchUp - PC/Steam. It sold pretty poorly. Googling around, it looks like I was (shockingly?) right because the official Kickstarter page for Moonlighter says Recettear was a main inspiration. Moonlighter has the exact same premise. But the games are not the same and Moonlighter obviously had a MUCH higher budget. I’m glad to see this idea actually taking off on Switch, because I liked the premise a lot.
I put a couple hundred hours into Recettear. I loved it so much. Thank you for reminding me of it.
Hello person thinking of buying this game. Just to let you know this game is NOTHING like Zelda or Animal Crossing. It's completely different and has it's own flavor. You should check it out. Lots of fun. Inventory management, rogue like dungeons, shopkeeping, chill music, unique and original art style.
This game is on offer as a bundle for just over £5 in the e-shop right now, and i decided to grab it based on this review.

Yeah, haha sorry about that one!! I basically couldn't say don't buy either of those lol. Personally, I would pick Moonlighter as it's a game you can put 5 minutes or 5 hours into. It has more longevity than those but they offer a better story experience. Decisions, decisions! (Mark)
I don't really understand the Animal Crossing comparison, but I've had my eye on this for a while now and it's something I plan to get.
It's more of an atmosphere thing. It's been about 15 years since I played animal crossing to be fair lol

Just got through it (on my phone). It was fun while it lasted... But damn was it short and easy and damn did the ending suck. Multiple endings, á Chrono Trigger, would've been a good idea if you wanted to have a New Game + option (where the difficulty might be higher: I just didn't gaf after seeing the ending). As far as the story goes I'd sum it up in one word: "shallow".
A better stand-alone sequel would be cool to see though. The different game elements blended nicely, the music was nice etc. It just felt like an unfinished game.
Picked this up on sale today for 8.99. 11 bit are one of the best new studios IMO. Looking forward to their next game.

Just started it, for a 2d pixel art game, the load times seem a bit on the long side. Feels like 10-15 seconds when going in/out of dungeons. 😢
Maybe Switch Pro will remove all load times from games like these which don't seem like they should require more than a second in 2021.

I bought it last year alongside the DLC for around £5. Great value and good fun. It would've been much better if they NPCs were a bit more engaging

I remember reading game manuals before playing them! Ahhh those were the days 😊 I have this on PS4 but came across a game breaking bug. Emailed developers and they did put a patch out and fixed it but I never went back to it. Games like these though, I will love them on a handheld but won't b bothered about them on a console for some reason. Sheltered is a great example for me. Might have to give this a go on the switch to do it justice

Now I see what you were referring to in the other comment, yeah it really looks like a good game, and I love games with roguelike elements, if the music and gameplay is as good as you say, I will pick it up next month, (I spent my gaming budget prepurchasing smash) the visuals are astonishing and I love the idea of having your own shop, it reminds me of a game that I think it was called dragon cafe, but with Zelda elements, I hope to enjoy the game as much as I did the review if not more, you really do an excellent job, the initial part was filled with wonder, and beauty, and the middle and final part with reality but in a good way, listing pros and cons, but mostly pros, keep it up have a good day, and I guess I just have to say, Have you ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?
