To be clear, I am not criticising you guys. You did the best you could given the resources you had. You gave Dory a chance, and when it became clear that recovery was not possible, you ended her suffering. Much kudos to you. I am however a lot less forgiving of the owners. Elderly or not, you cannot convince me they did not know the horse was suffering. 5 years!!! How they could watch the horse suffer for 5 years is incomprehensible to me.
I totally hear you!! It is so infuriating. But also just as the rescue said they have limited veterinary options on the island. And I know in our own state here in Oregon, USA sooo many people are unable to afford the expensive vet care that Dory would have required.
It’s awesome that people with big hearts like you all are able to try and save animals like Dory that are in need. Dory lasted as long as she did because she finally got some attention, affection, food and felt loved not alone. She enjoyed the time she spent with you guys at the rescue, and she died knowing she was loved. That’s how I am with animals too. It fills my heart, my purpose if I can save or even just help animal. It breaks my heart if they don’t make it , but I make sure they know they’re not alone and someone cares enough to be there for them. Keep it up 👍🏼

It is indeed heartbreaking what happens in the world, and we are trying our best to help and save as many animals as we can, but sadly, not everyone cares for animals as they should. 😔❤️
It doesn't matter if "they're not bad people". That horse has been literally abused within an inch of her life. Here in the US the owners would have been charged with animal abuse. AND Dory obviously had NO food and was denied medical care. Educating is great but is not enough, there have to be laws in place to hold people accountable as there are always going to be individuals that, for whatever reason, are going to be abusive. Sometimes even in spite of having been educated.

I am from the uk and this is beyond belief for me also, but having spent time here i have 2 choices do what we can to educate, fight for change and rescue the animals we can or complain that the laws are not good enough and do nothing. You are wrong not always in USA monsters pay for terrible thing they have been down to animals I saw many times bastards go away unpublished for their crimes .
Unfortunately in the United States it isn’t really much better. It’s difficult to get owners held responsible for their prolonged neglect and abuse of their animals. And auctions are loaded with dumped horses and other abused of injured livestock and nothing is gone about it. Kill buyers swoop in and get as many as they can bidding against private buyers and especially the killers hate rescue groups. It’s so sad and I agree owners - auctions and local authorities- should all be held accountable for the part each of them play in aiding and abetting these horrific situations!

Better to make a connection in a positive way. In future these people might reach out to you before the situation is so dire. Sometimes I do see rescue situations which look very inappropriate and yours came close but, looking at the videos, it soon became clear that Dory was fighting for her life. I’m sure you knew that she was unlikely to survive but you loved her and stood beside her, making her final days what she wanted. That is love.

Most people know that hoarding animals is wrong as well, but in the hoarder's mind, they are saving the abandoned /unwanted animals. In reality, they can't feed them good or pay for health checks on their animals .. therefore they are bad. Dory's owners maybe thought the same, they "thought" she was eating & drinking, plus they kept her in a shelter :( As you say, some just don't see situations the same way...Sad, Sad , Dory wanted to live
Poor sweetheart should of never been put through this. The elderly owner's should be charged and put in jail. Why didn't they get her help when this first happened. If they got hurt they would go to the doctor straight away so why didn't they get a vet the day it happened 5 years after it happened they got help that's so perfetic - put them in jail. Ok... then considering that what you have said about the overall problem in general being a lack of education & knowledge, I would think that the most important first step to achieve would be to make a flier on basic horse care, hang it all over the island, and place it at businesses and events where people frequent. If you saturated the island with said flier, then: a) There would be no more excuse for owners when this abuse is continued, b) More awareness would be brought to the problem, possibly bringing about needed change to the existing laws. More power to you and let's hope it keeps going this way. Emma ... mate ... what you and your team do is f*cking brilliant too. This video is of course really sad, but it explains the reality of the situation perfectly. And I agree ... it should be less about attacking those who know no better when looking after animals ... but education of that generation and the next, is a legacy that you will all leave that might change the situation not just for animals that are lucky enough to find their ways to your place ... but across your island and the other canary islands too. It's so sad to see such graceful and resilient animals brought to such a state of ill-health and pain ... but what you're all doing is worth way more than you probably even realise. I disagree on not charging the owners. U say that won't change anything. Yes it will. When u charge people like them it can help a lot by getting to others not wanting to be charge that hard so others can see if they wanna be cruel to animals u will get the same charge or even worse. So charging them makes a big difference & with u all not doing anything about it only made Dory die in vain. Sad u all see it differently. It'll make people not want to donate because ur not helping the animal in that way as well. Be the animals voice & do what's right. If everyone looked at it the way u do than nothing will change because they know they can get away with it.

How wonderful is that instead of starving to death in a stall by herself? Laws must change, yes, and people must be held accountable, yes. Posting fliers, getting the story on the news, volunteering - it all matters. This is a rescue with volunteers on an island. Are you volunteering with animals? Are you raising awareness where you live? Are you doing anything to help animals, especially large animals that require food, water, shelter, vet help, blankets, etc. Rescuing large animals is necessary and a lot of work. This rescue is doing what it can. Why not be grateful that Dory finally received care?

I am sorry, you cannot convince me that they thought clean water and new shoes were the right thing to do when the horse had a broken jaw and could not eat, plus an injured eye. It does not take education. It only take common sense. What did they expect the outcome to be? Give the horse clean water and new shoes; and with time, the broken jaw and busted eye will miraculously heal themselves? Really?
Contact Horse plus humane society and ask to speak with Tawnee and apply for a grant or just ask her for help. I watch Horse shelter heros aka Horse Rescue Heroes every week here on TH-cam and they help many other horse ,full circle of life, rescue shelters. I'll try to comment telling them about dory and you so maybe it will be easier to contact each other.
The Spanish government should be ashamed of itself also the Spanish people should wake up to this cruelty and get onto the streets with huge protests demanding for change and serious consequences for animal cruelty!!

I understand it must be so hard, I wondered if that mare might have survived if she could make it to a medical facility but I think many of the horses you have probably will not be able to make the journey in time and deserve to be comfortable in their remaining time... still I hope you can continue to work towards bettering the rescue, and hopefully next time that one horse will pull through, seeing that mare fight but being in such a tight spot where you guys were unable to give her what might have saved her? that's just... that's the worst part of life.
Does not seem like Dory had the physicl strength to make it further than a few steps at a time. That said, this rescue did what they could and Dory was surrounded with love for the first time in a long time. That is great for Dory.
Why don’t you invite some of the world’s best vet inventors that are willing to stay on standby for an opportunity to help? A chance for the vets to get together with the best minds and raise money on a world wide forum for equine equipment etc. Get the media involved and the top companies involved also.

Are you saying the vet could not tube feed her, long enough to get her healthy for surgery? What kind of vet is that? Or at least teach you how to tube feed her. Here in the US vets teach rescuers how to tube feed tiny kittens!!! This is unacceptable. No vet worth their salt would not tube feed her or teach you how to. Despicable.

I will contact this rescue about JSJ and the book: Jin Shin Jyutsu for Your Animal Companion. The book shows shows lists of symptoms and correspondingly then - where to place ones hands on the animal in relation to the symptom. Fantastic book. Easy to read. Easy to perform JSJ without understanding it fully .... Cheers.

A chance for the vets to get together with the best minds and raise money on a world wide forum for equine equipment etc. Get the media involved and the top companies involved also.

Why are you sticking up for these cruel people that done this to this beautiful girl. They don't deserve to own any animal not even a bloody fly they are the cruelest horse 🐎 owner I've ever seen. Dory needed a vet and they done absolutely nothing for her - a broken jaw - clean water - food ( which she couldn't eat) - new shoes hahaha a bloody vet would of been a better suggestion
This is very true, but as we can not change the laws we have to work with want we can and be realistic. I am from the uk and this is beyond belief for me also, but having spent time here i have 2 choices do what we can to educate, fight for change and rescue the animals we can or complain that the laws and "the way of the people" and do nothing. This is why #dorystory is here, its a mission to change and fight for justice. Sadly this is by far No where near the worst case/story we have seen.
@@TenerifeHorseRescue yer I know - it's just so hard to see a healthy horse 🐎 get kicked in the head and these people done nothing - it's so hard to see that happening but would of been harder for you seeing this and trying to help this beautiful girl but the out come was so heartbreaking. Yes some countries need to change their LAWS to protect All Animals great and small these are living and breathing lives as well. Thank you for everything you guys are doing and honestly I hope it works out your way to PROTECT ANIMALS. Thank you for showing us Dory story - I'm so sorry the out come for Dory ended up putting her to rest - she's not in pain anymore so sad but this was the outcome. If the owner's got help when this happened the out come might of been a different story

Or at least teach you how to tube feed her.
Here in the US vets teach rescuers how to tube feed tiny kittens!!! This is unacceptable. No vet worth their salt would not tube feed her or teach you how to. Despicable.
Relax. Why not became a vet then? Gratitude for Dory's last bit of time on Earth withloving people with her.

I will contact this rescue about JSJ and the book: Jin Shin Jyutsu for Your Animal Companion. The book shows shows lists of symptoms and correspondingly then - where to place ones hands on the animal in relation to the symptom. Fantastic book. Easy to read. Easy to perform JSJ without understanding it fully .... Cheers.
