That gentleman in the left Varshan Sathish. He is father of Lydian Nadhaswaram who recenty won 2019 CBS Talent Show 'The World's Best'. This interview happened in 2017. He has not sent his sons to school. Hats off to Varshan for his guts and belief.

My childhood is influenced by IR. My teenage was the reign of ARR. BUT having listened to both of their songs, I SHOULD SAY that IR tunes & songs & BGMs & preludes & interludes got into me WITHOUT ANY effort to learn or any intention to get it by-heart. IR's music has made me feel happy or cry (tears of joy or tears of agony) and gave me goosebumps (although his predecessors like MSV, KVM, SDB's songs have also done the same, but their magic stops with the songs alone). IR ALSO stirs you and rips you apart with his song interludes, preludes and BGM scores). Although ARR's 90s songs made an impact, nowadays I ALWAYS resort to IR music and no one else's music has had such a HUGE IMPACT in my life.

There is no need for advt or promotion for songs. The songs should spread by word of mouth. Extremely feel sorry to say there is not one music director not one writer not one singer from present generation to do that. Film music is facing death sentence. 100's of songs of raja have been super hit even before the film is released in the theatres. Present generation of composers do not allow the singers to dominate. Music prevails over the voice and kills the songs. Rahman started well and till going to mumbai he was good. Afterwards we lost him.

PATHETIC to classify Ilayaraja's music as "80's hits". IR music is SEAMLESS, it does NOT CONFINE to just film songs or just BGMs or even just film music in total. His albums like How to name it, Nothing but wind, Music Messiah & Thiruvasagam and several other devotional albums are a PROOF. IR composed GANDHI's bhajan "Namrata ke sagar" sung by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi & Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty narrated by Amitabh Bachchan in 2008. He has collaborated with the late Mandolin U. Srinivas for an album featuring Carnatic kritis and more........
These new singers are so ordinary when compared to SPB, Susheela.

Is it fair that in a movie scored by the duo MSV/TKR, you go on and give away all the credit to MSV alone? Rakkamma kaiyaa thattu, Sangeetha Jadhi mullai, En jodi manja kuruvi, Narikathai, Chinnanchiru vayadhil, Sangeethame en deivame, Thumbi vaa, O vennilaave etc.....to name a "few". YES, technology is where ARR gained the edge, ("sound different" to quote ARR's own words).
To this day, IR does NOT own a studio. And if what IR made was not good "music" from 1985 to date, WHAT do you plan to call the CRAP that is being churned out by the tons nowadays? HAVE SOME DECENCY and CONSCIENCE while commenting. You are free to like ARR over IR, but to say that IR stopped making "good music" after 1984 is IGNORANCE like a chicken without its head.
