Tower of Power's horn section were so well known they were used by other artists like Santana, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Patti Labelle and Otis Redding just to name a few. These guys should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame but they're not..what a shame.

Off the 3rd album named Tower of Power. Lead singer Lenny Williams was the best vocalist TOP ever had. Many only know him from the single Cause I Love You. He stayed with the group for 3 albums. Shout out to Greg Adams and his great trumpet jazz solo

Hope I'm not too late. The horn section is legendary no doubt. But, let's not forget the rhythm section. David Garibaldi is one of the great funk drummers of all time imo.

Two of my favorite all-time songs are by Tower of Power: this one and "You're Still A Young Man" (1972). Enough soul to get you through the whole day. They cut deep.

I love how Asia lights up when she’s digging it! She had that big grin all during the song. Tower of Power is the greatest funk band, with the greatest horn section, ever. The great Lenny Williams on vocals. Lot’s of great tunes from these guys. Check out What Is Hip.

Total banger. Tower of Power was such a classy band, with amazing horns, great vocals and impeccable arrangements. Just think guys we had such an amazing variety of music to listen to in the 70's, every day, and it was all available on the radio. I feel sorry for people coming up today who are at the mercy of corporate music. Glad y'all are appreciating the music from back in the day and exposing younger people to it. 💯👍🏾❤️

Being in the 60s and 70s growing up, tower of power superseded all that I thought they would be! This is a superior group from back in the day, their stuff was different, and that horn section oh my goodness! I love it, more tower of power

The incomparable Lenny Williams on vocals backed by the best horn section on the West Coast...maybe the world. This album (released in 1973) was incredible featuring such great songs as "What is Hip?", "Clever Girl," "Soul Vaccination" and "This Time It's Real." But this song is the best of all...one of my absolute all-time favorites across all genres.

"Get yo' feet on the ground." A classic lyric in a song, "You can't walk a straight line if you're wearing crooked shoes." Go see them live, you will not be disappointed!! I have seen them many, many times. First time in 1974. They never disappoint.

Per Songfacts This song about a tough goodbye was written by Tower of Power saxophone players Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka. Castillo came up with the lyrics, which were inspired by a girl named Sharon, about whom he wrote the song "You're Still A Young Man."
In our interview with Castillo, he explained: "Basically it says our relationship is ending and how hard it is to say goodbye to her. I write a lot about specific situations but I let the song play out in a general way."
While the group itself never had a bigger hit, the Tower of Power horn section played on several tracks for other artists that did very well. Among them: "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" by Elton John, "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis & the News, and "Everybody's Everything" by Santana.

    • @twentyfiveyears5010
      @twentyfiveyears5010 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I had heard the story about "You're Still a Young Man" but I didn't know this was about the same girl. To have inspired two such incredible songs puts her up there in Pattie Boyd territory.

When my GF DUMPED me, it tore me apart from the inside out. Un-invited, unwelcome, I went to her window with my Boom-Box, played her this song, & serenated her. The year was 1979. Fast FWD to the year 2022, I LOST her to covid-19, & she left me with 2 great kids, who are now both physicians, & 3 terrific granddaughters, whom I love with all my soul. I grew up in the Projects in Tucson, lived there for 19 long years, & became a Criminal Defense Attny. Today, I no longer practice Law, & I'm so happy just to be a BUTLER to my 2 sissy A*ss Piites, & Cat. Your reactions, the genuine LOVE U two have towards one another, plus this song, yes, I teared up, truth be told. Raise your hand who wants to go back to the 80's & 90's????

Wow...love this! Memories, memories and more memories. Tower of Power is one of the best, if not the best horn sections in a band. There are many others. Another is "You're still a young man!" My favorite album is "We came to play", lots of great horns and singing and just pure funk. "Share my life"... "Let me touch you"..."Loving you is gonna see me thru"... "Am I a fool"..."Yin Yang thang" and title song "We came to play" and they did!!

YOU'RE KILLING ME!! This is my jam. Brings back good memories of good times. Summertime. 80s-90s. Cruising the park, then everyone hits the boulevard. Shiny lowriders, bikes. On display parked or cruising. It never got crazy. A fight was as violent as it got. And practically every hood was out there. It was a lot different then. Miss those days.

One of the reasons that bands from the mid 70's thru the 80's sounded so good was that they were big bands with tight horn sections. Bands like Tower of Power, EWF, and Chicago all fit this mode. You should really check out the Russian cover band Leonid and Friends, their cover of this song is tight. The thing about Leonid and Friends is that they have so many studio-quality musicians playing all at once. They started out covering Chicago, then got into Earth, Wind, & Fire. Their cover of EWF's After the Love is Gone, In the Stone, Fantasy, and September are all outstanding and exceptional.

Me and my mom partied with this band. In San Jose, California.
We knew somebody who knew their manager

Shout out to Lenny Williams 3rd lead singer for Tower of Power , Greg Adams on the flugelhorn solo, and rest of the band. Top 10 music in the mid 70s. I was on high school

Back in the 70's we were rockers through and through. We all hated disco for example. But two bands even us rockers always liked and respected were Tower of Power and Earth Wind and Fire. True greatness!

Rick Stevens was one of the best soul singers of his generation. Too bad he spent all those years in prison but Tower of Power carried on without him & when he was released from prison, they let him sing once again in special presentations. Sadly he has passed on...RIP
