This video was suggested to me BECAUSE it features a classic Volvo. Didn't know your channel, so yeah, you did the right thing making a video about your 240 👍
I owned a 240 variant back in the day, one day an elderly gent ended up going the WRONG way up an off ramp. His old battleship Ford pushed my engine back underneath my passenger compartment, COMPLETELY totalling the Volvo. I was able to climb out the back of the hatch of wagon with no more than cuts and bruises. Fabulous vehicle !
With the seats out if you look on the underside of the seat, you can see that there is a adjuster handle in the back which is responsible for raising and lowering the backside of the seat on the track. Not a lot of people know about that, they are only usually familiar with the dial adjuster and the slider. I’ve owned countless 240s, finding a five speed manual is a real treat, but rather rare. One of the most reliable cars out there if you can find one that is rust free.
An '84 Volvo 242 intercooled turbo was my first car when I was a kid. I turn 40 this year and I still have that car. I gave it a rotisserie restoration and swapped in a 1000hp turbo LS over the last few years. It's flawless and every single nut, bolt, and wire is brand new. It's my pride and joy.
Dang! Good on you. Looked at a couple of your vids and that thing is wild. Thanks for the sub, I'll have to come up with some more Volvo projects (though probably won't be as ambitious as yours)!
@AndrewDoesCarStuff thanks! I rarely post stuff on here, so sometimes I forget I even have content on TH-cam. Most of the build was documented on Instagram (although I slack at posting over there as well)
Subscribed in hopes of seeing more of this beauty! Just sold my '91 240 last summer because I didn't have the time nor the energy to do all the fixing it needed - it served me as a daily driver for 4 years well, though. Kinda missing the car now!
I dream of getting another one sometime in the future and changing the motor to something a bit more.. sensible. The possibilities are quite endless due to the fact that the space under the hood works as an airplane hangar.
On my 850, I used the extra blank panels (in the dash) to put in a USB port. The 1st radio I had installed in the car had 2 USB connections at the rear, so I had one USB in the dash. I had created a whole plug, and it looked stock (well, stock for 93-97). If (when) I get a 245 again, I'm totally going to do that with those extra panels. Gives the car a little modern touch.
Lovely, those trim bits always go super brittle. Never seen the armreset before, they definitely need it. Had two 240's over the years and always miss them and the roar of the fan when they pick up their skirts and hustle.
Really nice video. I have a '93 240 with identical speaker and door panel issue. I've been too lazy to fix it but now you motivated me. Hope you do more videos on this car
Excellent video overall, only reason i showed up was for the Volvo 240 I will be coming back to this video for when i repair the interior plastics in my 1988 240 sedan
I concur! These are called Coronas. Technically they wouldn't have come with this '92 model, as they were a thing you'd get with a GL model in the 80's. Volvo wheels in this periord were all named after celestial terms. The five spoke wheels I think you're referring to, which came on Turbo models, were called Virgos. In the 90's, I think the only alloy wheels you could get on a 240 were the Scorpius wheels on the '93 240 Classic.
As the current owner of an Opel GT and a past owner of a NB Miata and a 244, I'm feeling very seen here. Also, lots of flashbacks to the very sharp, very broken interior panels on that 244.
We had 2 240's, both were bought slightly used. Our first one was a 1975 240 L (Euro Model only. New body, but carry over B20 with single Zenith carb, stick shift 4 speed and manual windows. That car was bright orange. My parents did not like the color initially, but it was the best value on the lot and they needed a car right away (the Citroën Dyane was totalled in a low speed crash). That car came with us to the US and lived to around 12 years 120K miles until rust made it a total loss. That all black plastic interior parts and actually help up fine. A year with Tulsa OK sun and then upstate NY for the remainder of it's life. The next car was an '84 420 GL. That had a much nicer interior. Electric windows, sunroof, speed with electric OD, door bins. That had brown plastic parts a little darker color than you car. The dash cracked within 7 years and the door binds turned brittle and broke. That generation had plastic that just didn't hold up. We loved that car. We drove it for 14 years 180K before rust took over and become financially not worth fixing (Buffalo NY snow belt is hard on cars). Most dometic cars back then had rust holes in them by 8 or 9 years of age so the Volvos were much sturdier. Out friends had an '83 240 from Ottawa Canada, but they had the oil treatment in the doors and underside. That car lasted about 18 years so that treatment really works. Your car clearly didn't live in a place with harsh winter climate. It's a lovely example of "boxy and good" era of Volvo.
I remember hearing that Volvo started to galvanize the steel bodies at one point, maybe mid-1980s, and that made them resist rust a lot better. It was a golden era for sure. Thanks for sharing your Volvo story!
Thats a nice and clean volvo! These cars have a really big place in scandinavian car culture and there are many here who loves them! I think you would benefit great from making more content about this car 🙂. Great video as always 🙂👍
Hey Andrew! Just discovered your channel. Clicking whatever volvo 240 content🤣. I have an 88' wagon. Great job on those plastics. Tottaly love the beige interior. Feels like grandmas home🤣. My black door pockets are long gone. The arm rest with cupholders is a cool feature. Thanks for great content! Love your style! Looking forward to more 240 stuff! 😄
Just found your channel. I would have voted for the Volvo - in fact I’m mostly subscribing for the Volvo. Very worthwhile and satisfying job on the interior. I’ve been wanting a 245 for a long time but I think I’ve missed the boat for affordable ones now. Here in Eastern Canada those that haven’t rusted away are very pricey now. Yours is in great shape. 👍🏻
Thank you! I remember a lot of years when 240s were plentiful and cheap. I always knew they would go up in value eventually, and we’re seeing that happen in recent years. A simple, reliable, robust, versatile car like this is a wonderful thing. Hope you find one! They won’t get cheaper as time goes on.
Hey man, lovely looking car, my favourite colour for a 240, i use to own a gold saloon (Goldybox) until a guy on his phone slammed into me and wrote it off, a week after I'd finished restoring it! 😭 I couldn't help but notice yours is the non rusty door bottoms and tailgate slam panel edition, thats a rare one here in the uk! You got a new sub dude, glad you ignored your survey, look forward to more brick action. 🤘
Thanks! Sorry to hear about your Goldybox. Hope you at least got some good insurance money for it. My family used to have a sedan in this color as well, which I similarly named Goldilocks. We are pretty fortunate here in the western US for lack of rust. This won't be the last time the brick is on the channel, thanks for the sub!
Ya know, I didn't think to look for a manufacturer's mark on them. But they sound decent for what they are, which is why I don't feel that compelled to replace them, at least until the foam blows out.
Wow, I've never noticed the brittle plastics in 240's, despite having several trips in them, growing up in the 90's. I do hate the slightly unstable and creaky sounding center arm-rest in my P2 V70, but I'd guess it's classic Volvo, after seeing this video 😂 Great content btw 👍
Just discovered your channel..nice upgrades to the Volvo. Really enjoyed the Opel Manta ..a car that was a lot more common here in Ireland than in the US
Hey, great vid! Love these old bricks. My 740 has the seat warmers and i love using em'. Mayhaps you can do a video installing the seat warmers down the line
Beautiful car, i would love to hear about any mechanical work you have had to do to maintain this vehicle over the years and how hard or expensive it has been
Not much, to be honest! These cars are very simple and robust. If you're somewhat mechanically inclined, it's easy to work on. Anything that goes wrong is due to age or normal wear over time, or negligence. One thing I had to do was replace the crank angle sensor, because the wiring had become brittle and it wasn't making a good connection. I did also install lowering springs from IPD and Bilstein Touring shocks all around. It could probably use a couple other little things, but it just keeps chugging along.
I had to replace these in my Volvo 240 too. I guess 30 year old plastic isn't the most durable stuff and it's also easy to kick the door pockets when you get out if you aren't careful. That's probably why mine were missing entirely on both sides when I bought the car.
Good work, now all you have to do it politely request that every front seat passenger from now on does not use their feet to hold the door open. I've got some spare pockets for my 240 that I got when I bought it, still haven't fitted them yet.
Loved seeing this car and seeing the improvement. Did you consider putting some sound deadening in the doors while you were there or running a usb through the new centre console? Can't wait to see what's next!
Thanks! Those are both good ideas. I could see modifying the blank panels (for seat heater switches) with USB ports. In a pinch though, I still use a cigarette lighter adapter for that 😁
Nice Volvo 😍I want a Volvo wagon eventually. Currently have an 03 S80. Planning on starting a TH-cam channel for it too. Keep it up, new subscriber here 🤙🏼
Last summer my 90 lb German shepherd jumped into the drivers seat of my 240 (no idea why he thought he needed to be in the drivers seat that day, but he broke basically every piece of plastic, bumped the drivers door pocket going in, crushed the entire center console (ENTIRE), walking across to the open passenger door, hit the passenger door and exploded that door pocket m on the way out. It was a perfect moment of catastrophic loss where nearly every piece of brittle plastic was exploded in a single maneuver.
RE: bopping the door pockets back on. Those plastic washers that hold them in place are just as brittle as every other plastic part in the interior, so don't bop too hard.
holy cow I see your car around SB all the time. I have an 1989 which I am trying to build to look just like yours. I have the CIBIE E code lights in already and am looking for corona wheels like yours! Where did you find those beauties??
Small world! I may have seen you around too. I always notice other 240’s! As for the Coronas, I picked them up in a parts trade when I lived in Oregon. Refinished them myself and found some generic center caps that fit.
cool! how did you refinish them if I may ask? They look great! My volvo is silver with ecodes, BOSCH fog lights under bumper with covers and tinted windows. @@AndrewDoesCarStuff
@@geoffreycarter3981 Sounds rad, I've been considering the fog lights too. So I used to work somewhere with a shop I could use, so I was able to media blast the wheels and put them on a brake lathe to smooth out the curb rash. Then just spray painted the wheels with VHT wheel paint & clear coat. That was around 5 years ago, and to be fair, the CA sun has already eaten up a lot of the clear coat. If I did it again, I'd either use a better 2K paint system or take them to a pro, maybe even get them powder coated so it actually lasts. Another thing that could look sweet would be to paint them silver inside the spokes, then diamond-cut the front faces so they're shiny, then clear coat.
No seat heater option? 😂😂 here in sweden i dont think i have seen a single one without it. Pretty much standard here. More rare with Power Windows and ac
@@AndrewDoesCarStuff yea i was so confused when I saw the seater delete. Every old Volvo I have been in have had them. Maybe not always working but still 😅
Agreed! I think the camera makes the color differences look a little worse than they do in person. But probably the years of sun fading are to blame too.
That's a tricky one! I just looked at my car to try to figure out what I would do... two theories below. 1) If you can remove the grille, that will make it easy to manually operate the hood latch. The grille is held on with two plastic clips with springs at the top corners, and tabs at the bottom that slot into the car. You would have to use a thin tool (flat screwdriver?) to get under the hood & over the grille and turn those clips 90 degrees to release them, then work them up and out of the grille if there's enough room. Otherwise maybe you'd have to cut / destroy the clips to get them free. Next you'd have to move the top edge of the grille out from under the hood, then lift up to release the tabs at the bottom. If you manage to do this, the hood latch is fairly easy to access at the top center of this exposed area in front of the radiator. You should be able to see where the release cable hooks to a spring lever, and that's where you'd need to pull in order to release the hood. 2) If it's impossible to remove the grille, it looks possible to lie under the car and reach an arm all the way up between the grille and radiator. Using a long pry bar, screwdriver, or long needle-nose pliers, you may be able to actuate the hood latch from there. It does take a bit of force to overcome the spring tension. Those are my theories! If you need pictures of any of these things for reference, hit me up on IG and I'll see what I can do.
@@AndrewDoesCarStuff Thank you for all that. I'm quite old, and only have one hand that works, but I'll try and see what i can do (no, it Wasn't me who jammed the lever!!!¬but she who must be obeyed). Many thanks for the info.
Nevermind that (it's Instagram), or you can just shoot me an email if you like. I don't want to post it here in case of spam, but you can find it by going to my channel page and clicking the About info or "more" by the channel description. I can take a few pictures or a short video to show the things I described.
@@AndrewDoesCarStuff Andrew, hello again, still no luck I'm afraid, even with your kind help - which we thank you for. Neither I, nor the boss, can make things work as you suggest - if only because we do not really know what we are looking for.or at. We are in Cornwall, don't suppose that we could be lucky and you might be nearby? Or maybe know of a Volvo garage that could help us? Because of my hand I've not yet driven the car, all the pressure therefore falling onto the boss, which is unfair. All help most gratefully received. Christopher.
Yeah, that'd be cool. But I actually like the auto in this car, just makes it an easy cruiser. I have other sporty cars that are manual and fun to drive. The 240 is not a sports car :D

Love my 1989 240 estate
I have a 240 almost identical to yours! Where'd you source that center console from? I've been scouring for all kinds of trim bits like that
Nice! I got everything from Voluparts.
now I want to have a Volvo
only reason i'm here is cause VOLVO CONTENT
More broken plastics fixing pls
Apparently that’s what the algorithm wants, guess I have to smash some stuff so I can fix it 😁
Do you have any tips for re-attaching the badge/emblem on the front grille?
I haven't had to do that, but I imagine a little JB Weld would work well for that.
RE: bopping the door pockets back on. Those plastic washers that hold them in place are just as brittle as every other plastic part in the interior, so don't bop too hard.
I just appreciate that "bop" has been accepted as a technical term.
My favorite volvo
I want to see videos about this car.
Guess it's time to take a new poll! Thanks for that.
Volvo ❤
Now my question is: are the old plastics *that* faded that they straight up look like they are a different color, or are the new ones the wrong shade?
Probably a bit of both, honestly. I think the camera makes the different shade more obvious.
In the future, we will just 3D print an entire door panel.
Where’d you find the door pockets?
Voluparts?
Mine are….but dust lol
Yep, that's the place!
I have same year wagon. My driver side speaker is blown. What size speaker do I need to buy do you know size?
holy cow I see your car around SB all the time.
Great information, thank you. I will wave next time I see you around town! @@AndrewDoesCarStuff
I used to own an Opel Manta Luxus.
No seat heater option? 😂😂 here in sweden i dont think i have seen a single one without it. Pretty much standard here.
More rare with Power Windows and ac
I used to think the seat heaters were standard! Had a couple older 240's before this and they both had it.
@@AndrewDoesCarStuff yea i was so confused when I saw the seater delete.
Every old Volvo I have been in have had them. Maybe not always working but still 😅
God I love these. It just bothers me that every interior pannel is a different shade of beige...
Agreed! I think the camera makes the color differences look a little worse than they do in person. But probably the years of sun fading are to blame too.
nice vo bro
Were your replacement parts from IPD or preowned?
Neither, I got them from Voluparts! Checked IPD and it doesn’t look like they carry these parts.
Drive a 92 240 daily !
Did you import this from Europe or is it the USDM version?
It’s a US car, I just added the European headlights. Actually doing a video on the headlights soon!
Only found this because YT knows ill watch anything volvo related lmao
Man, the algorithm was good to me on this one. Guess there’s more Volvo fans out there than I realized 😎
Did you sell your 1979 Volvo wagon
😎👍
Aaaah, Volvo and interiour plastic parts, a neverending story. My 850 wagon is not much better.
Nice ikea car
Hello, we have a J Reg 240 - and the bonnet will not open! The pull handle appears to be stuck - all help most welcome!
@@AndrewDoesCarStuff Thank you. Please advisde what IG is. It's not a tewrm that I am famil;iar with. regards.
Very modern cars just will not last as long as this sort of older car.
Your viewers have no taste! That’s a good looking brick and now it’s that bit nicer!
Thank you! Maybe I just didn't have enough Volvo fans in the audience, but it looks like that's changing!
It’s a nice car but if I was you, I would do some modernisation on the HiFi.
Yeah, maybe one day. It's good enough for cruising around and listening to the radio like an old man.
i like volvo cars .... before i have 240 GL & 244 GLE. but now i have 850 T5 ...
Do you want to sell it?
I was doing thoughts and prayers that it was a manual.
Yeah, that'd be cool. But I actually like the auto in this car, just makes it an easy cruiser. I have other sporty cars that are manual and fun to drive. The 240 is not a sports car :D
Even the new plastics sound very fragile.
You could have cleaned that door panel entirely, it would have looked 10 times better
