I really enjoy your editing and script work. It's usually very concise and you don't fuck about for too long on one thing or another. Perfect vidya game content. 😊
In Dark Souls incantations work by literally reciting the tale of the original occurrence/power of an incantation, and believing it happened. I’d assume Elden Ring incantations work the same. You reciting a dragons actions. Incoming headcannon: Placidusax’s Ruin isn’t a dragon communion incantation because he was reciting an incantation himself, one belonging to his slain god. Who wasn’t a dragon
Honestly the only thing that shocked me on this list was you not separating the Stonedigger spells from the Glintstone group, would've thought you would do the semantic of splitting them just for the fact that the staff for Stonedigger singles them out specifically from the others. Same technically for Glintblade from Carian with their own separate staves, too.
I am of the opinion that incantations of 'Erdtree Worship' (Erdtree ver. NEW) and 'Ancient Erdtree' incantations (Erdtree ver. OLD) Should be considered separate categories. As they have different sigils, are referenced differently in their descriptions (of 'erdtree worship' vs 'ancient erdtree'). Erdtree Worship incantations include: Golden Vow Barrier of Gold Golden Lightning Fortification Protection of the Erdtree Wrath of Gold All of the above are associated with everything during & after Golden's Order's quest of conquest. Ancient Erdtree incantations include: Wrath from Afar Heal from Afar Erdtree Heal Blessing's Boon Blessing of the Erdtree Minor Erdtree Aspect of the Crucible: Breath Aspects of the Crucible: Tail Aspects of the Crucible: Horns Aspects of the Crucible: Thorns Aspects of the Crucible: Bloom Elden Stars *Black Blade All of the above are associated with everything during & after the Erdtree's fleeting bountiful bloom & harvest (and the 2 'afar' incants I suppose; guess Messmer's purge must've happened before the 'Erdtree Worship' age?) There are also several Holy ashes of war that spawn either sigil. If Loretta incants are separated despite having the same sigil then might as well separate these too.
im so glad that elden ring item descriptions are infecting our minds, ive never felt so validated hearing someone say "fly in the ointment" before in my life
I love the Two Fingers spells from a lore standpoint. Those and the cipher weapons are Definitive proof that the path set for the tarnished by the two fingers is impossible to tread. I consider that set of spells/equipment to be the “meager blessings” and “miserly scraps” the Tarnished fight over that Tanaith refers to in one of her dialogues.
So IMO one of the few bigger flaws in ER was giving all those spells and miracles stupid subtypes with like 1000 staffs and seals, where most of their only main difference being which subtype they buff. Those were boring as hell to find and loot. I'd rather have ¼ of staffs and seals, but each having at least some sense of uniqueness to them that how it is now.
My friend uses placi-breath for everything and he uses it anywhere with a glass cannon build and it just magically works out. He kills invaders 9/10 times, he always flings small bosses, and has not had any issues with any bosses except fire giant. Him using that spell is the only reason i got through my co-op tibia summons playthrough
Just want to say watching your videos has made me fall in love with elden ring all over again in it's own little funny way. Been trying out incantations for the first time now and holy lord it's so much more fun then like a non magic based build. Anyway keep up the videos I love your content!!!
I wanna say the gravity school should be third instead of the finger school because like you said the gravity school just doesn't miss. It's only suffering for a lack of support spells, and honestly I feel like if Cragblade or either version of gravity well (pull or repulsion) were gravity sorceries instead of ashes of war you would've probably given it third place since imo at least Cragblade is the best weapon buff in the game. Like you also said though the worst aspect of the gravity school is that we don't have the more reasonable spells Radahn and Gaius have. Mainly Radahn's gravity version of Glintblade phalanx imo. The only thing that could even be considered a miss for the gravity school is the meteorite staff, but that thing is more like a double edged sword than a miss. It permanently being stuck at like +21 or +22 for upgrade level is amazing in the early game and still good in the mid game. However it also basically makes it one of the worst staves by end game due to other staffs being able to hit +25 or +10 for somber staffs. Also it's kind of an obvious fact, but Rock Sling and Blades of Stone do 100% standard physical damage, but what's not obvious is that the two meteorite spells do a mix of standard physical damage and magic damage. Meanwhile Collapsing Stars, Gravity Well, and Gravitational Missile do all magic damage due to lack of rocks in them.
Oh that’s neat to know about the black flames for DLC My first playthrough for the DLC was my black flames build 💀 Still did exceptional considering it had a nerf technically lmao
Im so glad it's said. The most frustrating thing about ER cast playing is that damn near everything is so bottlenecked you need 20 buffs to get any near a decent amount of damage. Shits so ass
I know Roar of Rugalea is ranked lower, but it has become one of my favorite incantations in the game just because of 1.13. The amount of power I feel by turning into a grizzly and killing enemies by screaming at them will always be satisfying.
8:49 The reason Placidusax's Ruin isn't a Dragon Communion incantation despite being so similar to them, is because you don't get it from devouring his heart - it's a Remembrance item. I get the feeling that Bale's items being available from Communion is FromSoft realizing their design mistake and fixing it for the next superboss.
Honestly this is one area where literally any other fantasy game beats Fromsoft titles, they almost go out of their way to make magic completely useless save 4 spells that actually do anything
Magic and incantations are not two different things in other games. Fromsoft has the best variety of spells and magic of any game except maybe mmorpgs or heavy rpgs like baldurs gate and divinity
I really think this issue comes down to them not knowing how to balance magic vs. melee very well. Why bother using these cool tiered spells when I can just grab a big stick and beat whatever is in front of me into submission and do more damage for no cost? I don't think they want to make every spell super powerful, and that's how we end up with all of these spells that aren't really worth using and then these select few that feel like using miniature nukes. This problem has unfortunately always been present. I know it's not too bad in DS1 and idk about DS2 because I haven't tried magic in that game yet, but I know in DS3 at least most of the magic kinda sucks. Even when I try to build into it as much as possible it feels like too much of a hassle compared to R1'ing everything to death. The more build variety that gets added, the harder it is to balance everything to the point where it feels worthwhile to use it, I guess. Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to put my thoughts about this into words.
@@VVVVIVIVI I'm nto disagreeing with anything you said, but I think they think magic has to be generally weaker than melee because you can cast it from afar and therefore often out of harm's reach. And even when they are strong, you are a bit of a glass cannon due to the stat requirements for good damage. I could understand that being the case, except A) there are spells that still suck at doing their job in that case and you are instead a glass blowgun and B) there are still spells that absolutely shred at range where you will have no chance of being punished for it, so you are a cannon minus the glass.
@@undvined Ah, I didn't even think about casting range. I was too focused on the cost via FP. It's probably a weird combination of factors, in all honesty. Maybe it's just too much to consider sometimes and stuff just turns out however it happens to.
I love black flame magic, its my top pick and now I know why there was no new black flame magic in the dlc, I went through the whole dlc using black flames
I'm not gonna ask for the all-spells ranking, I don't want it, honestly. But i DO want to call out the editing at 10:55, that one actually stun-locked me for a second.
Triple rings fucks in PVP. You can throw it at your feet and if an enemy isnt careful they can accidentally one shot themselves by touching all three rings multiple times.
In defence of the 2F incantations as someone who only plays melee having an early game low requirement boost to my defences is really helpful even into Altus.
Hearing the dlc called “postgame” is weird to me because on my current run i’m doing lands of shadow as i do mountaintops of the giants content and it feels like equivalent content, where the scadu levels dont ruin your progress through the base game’s endgame, since you need to get your vit to 60 for either area. Malenia and Radahn difficultywise are actually pretty even if you factor in the nerf and dont factor in 2 years of muscle memory for those of us that were waiting for the dlc before we did our ten replaythroughs.
Loretta's spells were there because their range is more than double the lock on range. So you can use it to shoot guys really far away if you can aim it like crossbows in Dark Souls 1
24:30 i like to think that the Frenzied Flame incantations having mega poise damage is to help emphasize the unendurable nature of Madness without going through all the effort of making madness proc animations for every enemy in the entire game(or creating a status effect that's basically just a Better Poise Break). To me it's less "both halves of its usefulness get split down the PvE/PvP line" and moreso different executions of the same fundamental properties and outcome: me cry on enemies with yellow fire tears, me knock them down hard n good, may chaos take the world and all that
I tried an int build once. I made it to the first map piece up by the gates, didn't even grab the grace that's right there before going back to the church, and then quitting and never opening that save again. My faith-based character, however, is solidly in Liurnia now, but I haven't touched that save since starting the DLC. This faith-based character is one I'm fully running mostly fire incantations with as my default unless I'm up against something where lightning is needed. I'm particularly fond of the Frenzied Flame and the Godslayer incantations for my fire damage needs. I will, however, make sure to swap out my Godslayer incantations for other stuff in the DLC. That said, when I get this character to Rennala and can respec (I never respec my builds, but goddamn, that faith build is a mess right now), I think I'm going to dump some levels in arcane to make proper use of the Dragon Cult incantations. All that and I just think it looks cooler when using incantations versus how it looks when casting sorceries.
I really wish they'd have you know expanded upon the schools of magic and incantations instead of just introducing like 30 new schools with 1 or 2 spells each
I found the magic bows useful once. When the rocks with frickin laser beams attached to their frickin heads started shooting at me. Good range, bad everything else...

is mayonnaise a magic type?
No but a mental state
Putrescence is the mayonnaise magic type
A clayman is a man made of clay.
I wanted a Miquellan Bewitching Incant so *so* badly...
At least the game is still a 10.
hay rusty if you want a easy video to make you can make a teir list of the non hostile creatures. such as the deer, boar, sheep. goats, ectra there's more but i can't think of them for the life of me since i think there's only 10 total an some subtypes of them. so yea but the non-hostile creature tier list be just a fun easy video you can make in a single sitting an call it done.
Hell yeah! Rusty ranks ranked videos!
Incoming headcannon:
Placidusax’s Ruin isn’t a dragon communion incantation because he was reciting an incantation himself, one belonging to his slain god. Who wasn’t a dragon
RUSTY WE CAN'T KEEP GOING ON LIKE THIS YOU'RE BEING MEAN BRO'S MAKING EVERY VIDEO EXCEPT THE ONE WE WANT
RANK YOUR TOES(best to worst)
Wrong video rusty we want all toes in elden ring ranked NOW!
And don't just be ranking the foot as a whole, EACH TOE
213 spells, you say? So we can expect a 213-minute video when Rusty?
That was more than 70 seconds, but I'll forgive you.
During my magical knight play through I gained an appreciation for sorcery!
Erdtree Worship incantations include:
Golden Vow
Barrier of Gold
Golden Lightning Fortification
Protection of the Erdtree
Wrath of Gold
All of the above are associated with everything during & after Golden's Order's quest of conquest.
Ancient Erdtree incantations include:
Wrath from Afar
Heal from Afar
Erdtree Heal
Blessing's Boon
Blessing of the Erdtree
Minor Erdtree
Aspect of the Crucible: Breath
Aspects of the Crucible: Tail
Aspects of the Crucible: Horns
Aspects of the Crucible: Thorns
Aspects of the Crucible: Bloom
Elden Stars
*Black Blade
All of the above are associated with everything during & after the Erdtree's fleeting bountiful bloom & harvest (and the 2 'afar' incants I suppose; guess Messmer's purge must've happened before the 'Erdtree Worship' age?)
There are also several Holy ashes of war that spawn either sigil.
If Loretta incants are separated despite having the same sigil then might as well separate these too.
I will never not be upset we didn't get a single sleep spell.
The problem with sleep spells is they were SO effective, when the scholars tried to write them down, they all fell asleep!
@@JadedJasantha i know it's a joke, but we literally met St T in the dlc, have her teach them.
im so glad that elden ring item descriptions are infecting our minds, ive never felt so validated hearing someone say "fly in the ointment" before in my life
I love the Two Fingers spells from a lore standpoint.
Very interesting Rusty, very cool, now rank all of the Convergence mod magic classes.
He's got at least 37 more Vanilla ranking videos before mods (that aren't from his mod jam) get in on the lists
You said it yourself: Someone was gonna ask. You've got to rank all the spells and incantations individually now.
Finally a Tierlist on spells, I been struggling to find which is the best
When are we getting the feet ranking? We both know Miyazaki would appreciate it
Oh that’s neat to know about the black flames for DLC
My first playthrough for the DLC was my black flames build 💀 Still did exceptional considering it had a nerf technically lmao
Rusty I just learned that fire damage resets frostbite. My utmost condolences for the family😢.
Rusty, crafting cookbooks ranked, NOW
Honestly this is one area where literally any other fantasy game beats Fromsoft titles, they almost go out of their way to make magic completely useless save 4 spells that actually do anything
Rusty's videos keep getting more chaotic and I'm all for it
Loreta's mastery is meant to be used on horseback btw
I love black flame magic, its my top pick
and now I know why there was no new black flame magic in the dlc, I went through the whole dlc using black flames
I will never get tired of these
One thing I still love about the Loretta sorceries though is their sheer range.
"Cosmic turbo syphilis"
Man I can't this one is just too good
Hearing the dlc called “postgame” is weird to me because on my current run i’m doing lands of shadow as i do mountaintops of the giants content and it feels like equivalent content, where the scadu levels dont ruin your progress through the base game’s endgame, since you need to get your vit to 60 for either area.
Discus of light is the best thing against the golems in the forges
24:30 i like to think that the Frenzied Flame incantations having mega poise damage is to help emphasize the unendurable nature of Madness without going through all the effort of making madness proc animations for every enemy in the entire game(or creating a status effect that's basically just a Better Poise Break). To me it's less "both halves of its usefulness get split down the PvE/PvP line" and moreso different executions of the same fundamental properties and outcome: me cry on enemies with yellow fire tears, me knock them down hard n good, may chaos take the world and all that
3:50 i thought of a whole different scenario before he said he was flipping off his mic and i think i need some of those church spells used on me
Everyday we come closer to rusty's "every ranged damage sources ranked"
Your reasoning for Loretta's spells being least makes sense, but i also used it throughout an entire str/int playthrough and enjoyed having it
Oh boy, my favorite flavor of video:
Numbered list of Things! Yay!
My favorite part of Flame Grant Me Strength is getting to use it on 3 attacks before it runs out.
I really wish they'd have you know expanded upon the schools of magic and incantations instead of just introducing like 30 new schools with 1 or 2 spells each
god dammit that Sea Shanty joke had no reason to make me laugh the way it did
I honestly didn't even notice that black flame got weaker in the DLC.
I was too busy steamrolling with the Godslayer Greatsword and my boy Amon
I found the magic bows useful once. When the rocks with frickin laser beams attached to their frickin heads started shooting at me.
Good range, bad everything else...
I actually very much love Loretta spells, especially from the sheer ability to aggro larger enemies.
Cant wait for the new Map Ranking later
In another world, Watchful Spirit would be a passive auto-attack that functions when the right talisman is equipped.
