The next level to this is to make sure its motivated, by giving it a reason to be there - in other words, make sure it makes sense in the scene. Normally this will mean shining a hard light source through a window or using a torch.
Adding something like blinds to a window frame can help separate the light into multiple shafts and create a really cool effect.
