My grandfather (depression era farmer) kept a tub of sand that was soaked with used motor oil When he got done with a shovel hoe etc. he would just shove it down into the sand which cleaned the tool, and added a thin coat of oil, his tools all were rust free and in great shape after years of use.
That's a great tip/idea from your Grandfather... Thanks for sharing it!
Only been to a few flea markets in my lifetime. I enjoyed that one
I love old things that still work, including hand tools. Old, worn out, sloppy, shakey, or broken things, not so much. They can stay right on the table
Me too!
Good Evening ! I love working on the old tools, very ZEN for me. I soak my tool handle at the head in anti freeze. When the water evaporates after taking it out, the ethelene stays & keeps the wood swollen. I'm with you, cats & dogs. TAKE CARE..
I agree love old quality tools an knives. I'm a carbon steel guy love old American made butcher knives old axes an cast iron. Just put handle scales on a heavy machete that was made by Japan for us military. I used awesome grain wood off a 1950s oak twin bed I saved the wood from. Enjoy refinishing old things. Enjoyed the video. Good luck
I do the same in Germany, I am a Blacksmith and I have a lot of old stuff and work with them.
Flea markets, yard/garage sales, thrift stores, all great places to get like new, name brand equipment for pennies on the dollar. Also I love all animals. Some for companionship, some for eatin. Have a German Shepard, had a cat but she died a couple years ago. Have had dogs, cats, rats, frogs, birds, ground hogs and some others over the years. Miss every single one of em.
Servant of cats and an boss of dogs here.. I love both for sure. Always nice to make old rusty tools beautiful again, isn't it?
Nice video 👍
Dog person and I love fixing up old tools, I inherited all my grandfathers tools that he made himself, they are indestructible
I like cats and dogs but I prefer my ferrets! Fit in your pocket and good to help catch a dinner of rabbits!
Ha!! Awesome! My aunt had one when I was a kid. He was a funny little thing.
Between yard sales and Salvation Army, I have found tons of great prepper items. Some of the best are cooking and garden items. Old perc coffee pots, tools, live traps, work clothes etc.
Yard Sales and Flea markets are my go tos for manual and power tools. Good deals are easy to find if you know what you are looking for and can be patient. These are great places to build up your supply of tools, gear and items for prepping over time for good prices.
I love dogs and cats, if I have to fall on one side of this fence I'm gonna have to go cats though and lament the loss of the puppers.
Thankfully I'm a sane individual and have both, honestly just being good with animals in general is a trait that I am glad to have and a more important one is to be able to spot those that aren't. A person not good with animals probably isn't a good person.
There may be a day where you will not be able to run down to the local hardware or big box store to pick up a new cheap made in “Gina” tool. If/when the US goes to a full war time economy you can kiss access to ANY consumer good, good-bye. In WWII no vehicles for common civilian use were available - new books publishing was greatly curtailed. And that was when we had a massive manufacturing capability. So what do you think will be available in the next war economy?
I get my best deals on old tools at auctions. I have a very good collection with multiple duplicates of some items to the point where I have actually sold a few tools to my local Amish neighbor.
I love old hand tools, when I see one I usually get it
Flea markets are one of my favorite places to go.
Sometimes spending the time to refurbish older tools and equipment, gives you a much better product, a lot of the newer tools are garbage
Love a flea-market.cats or dogs/ both!
Really solid vid, thank you. Cat person tbh. Gotta say, flea markets, old pawn shops and such can get really solid tools cheap. Thanks Jason
I’ve got the exact same glass fry pan, it’s literally our favourite cooking pan, easy to clean and cooks just great
Loved this video, brother! I'm all about restoration, and yep, flea markets are great. I've always got projects like this going. Oh, and I'm a doggo person! 😁👊🏻
Need to wear the hat at the fall gathering.
I'm with you. I like both dogs and cats. They are very different animals and have their advantages and disadvantages in terms of keeping them as pets. The bigger the dog, the more expensive it is to properly care for them, in my experience. However, I like big dogs better than small ones. It's just my preference, I guess.
We love both, we have both. And kids so we love all kinds of animals. Lol
Many years ago, I lived in a beach town here in SoCal and I would go to the flea market every chance I got. I LOVED the flea market !
Your dady will never ever give that thermos up😊
Thanks for all the valuable information on tools and flea markets. I love old hand tools.👍
An adorable sweet fluffy kitty. I love critters of all kinds.
Luv tool hunting at flea markets, find some great treasures!
I'm frugal and I love flea markets
Great tip on the machete handle fix. I have two different sizes of those grass machetes.
Im a dog guy. A cat will go hide if a bogey charged through your door but my 80 lb dog will make him pay. My best all time flea market buy was an anvil vis for$5. Just this week I cleaned up a machete I found in a ditch near some woods and heat-formed a pvc sheath for it, adding a belt loop and a web shoulder sling.
Plenty of dogs will run too, depends entirely on the animal.
I live in the country and have cameras, sensors, boom sticks, but I rely on my German Shepard first and foremost. Definitely my most reliable tool.
That’s awesome!
Scruffs the Survival Cat and her trusty sidekick Jason!
I love flea makers yard sales etc. i enjoy both my cats and dogs
you got one gorgreous kitty !!!! Ihave found some nice vintage hand tools in thriftstores. I have some files that look similar to yours. I even have an antique folding ruler that goes to 6 feet
Had your video running while I inventoried evacuation bags that I prepared for my family. All the bags are Built the same for each individual but some bags contain more stuff as each family gets one item for certain categories. i'm building 5 bags for three families and 7 people. They still require individual customization, but the basics are all there.
That is awesome!
Great video brother
Dog person for sure. Excellent alarm and deterrence.
I think about how people lived a hundred years ago , and I use that as a reference for how they lived back then, before electricity was widespread. They essentially had the basic tools to keep them alive. And they were more dependent on skills and knowledge. Prepping for us, was a way of life for them.
See ya on the next one
Great video. I like that little flea market. There is usually a guy there with some god prices on coins.
Practical information. Great job.
Thanks!
Dogs and cats, Rottweilers are my favorite giant fur babies
One guy explained that he sharpens the back 6" carving sharp, the middle section chopping sharp, and the tip touched up for grubbing which is usally what they do in Asia with machetes..
I usually have a hard time trying to sharpen my various blades and tools.
I still use my grandparents' Stanley coffee thermos. I still collet old tools because I can set them aside and use them when our power grid inevitably fails. It will be miserable, but hopefully I will have the tools when the time comes.
Love animals, but definitely a cat person...owned 16 of them over the years, 14 at one point (and I *don't* live on a farm!).
I visit the flea market every time I go on vacation in Orlando.
When, after my parents visited my moms parents, we used to go to the flea market in Pontiac, MI. They would always get me and later my brother and me cotton candy and my parents bought us American Thunder tshirts I liked the designs on them. I tried to get my dad to buy me some rare Pokemon cards as it way one of the things I was into. I also collected rocks primarily crystals, marble, and fossil and I had some coal I found under my parents modular.
Return of the Bush Kitty 😀🐈 😆, definitely don't make them like they used to 😢, for sure
boiled linseed oil works for soaking tool handles. give it a try.
Great suggestion!
Dog and cat guy. Love them both. Dogs are probably more useful to me. But a cat with a good personality is nice to have around
I’ve got a ww2 machete from my late uncle it’s dated 1943 and all the U.S. markings it’s made in Sheffield England in the rear of the blade it’s very well made and hold a hell of an edge the scabbard is green and just as well as the machete is it will last me till I’m gone and one of my four grandsons will want it lol .
What a treasure!
Old hand tools are great. Drills that you manually operate.
Are worth their weight in gold.
Get them if you find them.
Great video brother!
Yes they are!
One thing I've heard about oiling up your tool handles. Is to oil it once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and then one time a year and it will be good to go.
Great tip!
Flea markets and garage sales are great places to find cheap items like camping , hunting and fishing. I recently went to a 100 mile yard sale event and found bunches of items needed for life in general. Great video btw.
Thanks!!
I wasn’t at Murphy that day. We sell there quite a bit. Definitely worth checking out for good used tools. I have heard they passed a law shutting down private gun sales at flea markets. 😡 I’m a cat and dog person. 👍
I like cats and dogs both. More of a dog person, but love them both.
🌾
my late dad had a Stanley thermous that he used the CRAP out of, that thing went everywhere with him. I don'tknow if any of my relatives has it but makesme want one of those
Hope to see you at the Georgia Bushcraft Fall event in November. I am a vendor with all the stuff you are talking about here. Hand tools, wool blankets and Cast iron. Really really.
I really really hope to see you too! Flag me down.
My wife just bought a machete for me from a yard sale note even knowing. I can’t wait to wrap the blade and put a big #1 on it. 😄
Nice!!
Best flea market I used to go to was in Ladson, SC. haven't been to a flea market in well over 25 years. I ought to go but just haven't had time or the opportunity. As to the question of dog or cat, was a dog person. Have cats and the biggest noise maker we got are chickens. So I guess I'm A chicken person.
Jason using a stone on the machete as the cat leans against a post in the background using an emery board on its claws...
Old hand tools are almost always better quality.
Power tools, especially battery ones from name brands are better every generation.
Companies like Ryobi and Makita, sell all the service parts you need to do your own repairs.
Avoid buying any high capacity battery pack that uses flat Lithium ion cells. They don't even last half as long as 18650 based cell packs and you can't replace the cells !!
Anyone who doesn't shop at Charity stores or Flea markets is wasting LOTS of money !
Cats for the Win 👍😁
Looks like shepherdsville Kentucky flea market
Both but Large
dogs are the best
I am a dog person. But I have always kept a cat around for pests.
Boom courtesy comment. Oh where is Alan Kay I loved that dude sorry but he was my favorite
👍🏼🐕
Cats is where it's ats.
Metal is to soft go chop sum limbs and see???
I ll be at the anvil waiting lol
I hav had mine for 45 yrs or so it's just to thin???
Maybe ok for grass an leaves ,the trails I break are mostly limbs or trees!!!
But I pound it out an keep it on the SxS......
Old is better in most situations
Cat all day
You can find treasures there that have been buried for a while
older items were usually made to last unlike newer ones. cats.
Dog guy right here
How does the thermos know to keep it hot or cold?
Both
Always use boiled linseed oil
both cat or a dog, I lean toward cats as they are pretty self sufficient and independent, cats don't eat much food, dogs will guard and make great companions, they will also eat cat feces, and a lot of food depending on the dog, cats wont eat dog feces at all. but in general I like them both.
I was going to try and send you a photo if my old hand cultivator but my phone is not allowing me to do that or even copy it to the clipboard then paste in the comments.
It's a 4 tine one with spindly curved tines and leaf like blade with a friction clamp. The company madea 5 tine version as well.
BUT, I'm looking for a beefier more robust 5 tine cultivator that had individual thumb screw to hold down each time. My dad had one that I remember seeing but I can't find it online. It supposedly came with two sizes of handles for it, a long two handed handle and a shorter one handed handle.
The sturrup/hazel/push-pull hoe I got needs a longer handle which i can't find and I've never been able, and don't know how, to make one. The original one split lengthwise.
And my two old old shingling hatchets need replacements but nobody carries them. Found an old time axe head in good shape with a wide blade while metal detecting. Picked up two Plumb axe & hatchet with chewed up handles.
So, yeah, I need resources.
How about soaking the tip in vegetable oil? You've got enough on hand.
both
9:44 its pointless even if you do it. have a great day!
The handle was bolted on with screws?
Are you sure it wasn't screwed on with bolts?
My head hurts
Generally I'll trust animals trusting or not trusting people before I'll trust people, a few stray and community cats in my neighbourhood will run upto me when I'm working or working-out in the back yard, people chasing em soon go away umhmm lmao
Where is this flea market located? I need wooden handles real bad. Thamks
Near Murphy NC
I need resources to find a place with replacement tool handles, especially for older tools.
The flea market near Murphy NC has a bunch of different tool handles.
@@ONThree, I've been to the flea market in Talent OR but never noticed any tool handles. Don't have flea markets in northern California. Don't suppose there's an Amish tool handle place.
How'd I'd love my shop to "open-air" shop
Any comment 😊.
Dog....German Shepherd

Show more of the cat.
Ha! She is a show stealer.
Well, unfortunately, we live in a California desert community. There's not a whole lot to do here so living here feels like the dark side of the moon.
What State is That?
NC
Thats a "4 in hand" file/rasp.
Unfortunately we are now living in a use it once and throw away culture , nobody nowadays know how to repair their gear , os shit can it and buy a new one . I on the other hand find this stuff and make it work again , thier loss is our gain .
And I have six machetes
Comment......
Thanks!
Would you rather have a pet lizard or fish follow you on survival adventures?
I could put a fish in a camelback water bladder and take him everywhere. His name would be Thaddeus.
