      All due respect, Stefanie Powers was Anna in the UK in a touring production of “The King and I” when she was roughly 60, toured the production in the United States when she was 64 and 65.

    Good grief, can we stop comparing the two and just admit that absolutely NONE of us are able to to what they did? I mean, if you can, great! But seriously, both of these women are incredibly talented and dance effortlessly; I am in awe!

    • @daysjours
      @daysjours 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      May I just say that when one critiques an artist there is no place for ¨Well YOU can´t do it¨ That is so beside the point. What does that even MEAN?? So dumb. And by the way my critique is that Anne Reinking has zero sensuality and does not seem to feel the music. there is a robotic quality to her dancing in my opinion even if I cannot do what she does and even as I marvel how well she does what she does. She does not move me and seems mechanical -- a technician rather than an artist. But I am really happy she moved so many people you included. Art is also about individual taste and how we respond. Be well.

    • @supersillysilence2349
      @supersillysilence2349 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daysjours I didn't mean to come across as confrontational. When I was going through the comment section, I saw a lot of comments that were insulting both women, and I personally thought that that was ridiculous. Critiques are different than insults. You are pointing out where Ann could have improved. Your point is very valid, and I would even agree with you. I just don't think we should say that performers are downright "terrible". This is just my opinion.

    • @daysjours
      @daysjours 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super Silly Silence You are absolutely right. No need to insult. I am really intrigued by Ms Reinking. I had heard of her of course. But this was the first time I saw her dance. I watched a few videos and I am so intrigued by how amazingly talented she was but also how her head and heart seem detached from her dancing. I have been watching a young Korean dancer who is considered one of the best dancers in Asia. His name is simply Taemin. Watch his song MOVE. Both the practice video and the music video. He is far superior to her. Because he brings his whole being to the choreography and also his technique is so impeccable that you are not aware of any difficulty or any physical feat - instead you are watching expression of music and emotion. Anyway, she was certainly gifted but she doesn’t move me in the slightest. Be well and stay safe

    I worked with Annie and one that you always knew was she was pulling for you and behind you 100% She was full of grace and compassion. She made a point of always making the role you were playing even if you were replacing someone yours. She made you feel at ease. What a legend and no one can do Fosse like she did. from a dance standpoint, technically, lyrically and interpretively anyone who knows dance will tell you that- while it’s not a competition at all- ann was totally outdanced by bebe here. bebe’s movement was so crisp, defined, perfect placement, beautiful transitions and comical little nuances and superb musicality. ann was almost a decade older, so you can see that her slightly deteriorated muscle tone and flexibility made it harder for her to hit the beats and deliver with the fluidity and vigour that she might have done 15 years earlier, but her characterisation and movement quality is still lovely to watch!

    I was lucky enough to get rush tickets to see Chicago in the 90s, and got to see them perform front row, center stage. The part where they toss roses into the audience, one of the cast members knelt down, and handed me a rose. 😊 I hung up my Playbill with the rose tucked in it for years on my bedroom wall. Fantastic night!

    It’s also interesting to see how over time a style gets watered down I mean really it’s just inevitable. You can never really capture it completely like the original. I find that aspect of a style of dance evolving so interesting. Makes you long for the roots but you can never totally and completely capture it. You can see it side by side here. It’s really something to see Ann who worked directly under Fosse and then see a later generation sample the movement.

    • @susanmitchell3266
      @susanmitchell3266 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well said. My thoughts exactly. There's an essence to the Fosse movement. Sam Rockwell (as Fosse in Fosse/Verdon) did a pretty good job however!

    • @RagenRibbonz
      @RagenRibbonz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Bebe Neuwirth trained under Fosse...1986 revival of Sweet Charity. She has spoken in interviews many times about it. Gwen Verdon primarily taught and coached the choreography to the dancers, and Fosse directed. He was also one of the people she consulted when she ultimately accepted the offer to regular as Lilith after her initial one-shot appearance. Also, in referring to the Chicago routine here, I certainly wouldn’t call it a “watered down” version of Fosse’s style. It’s not even an evolution. Reinking was asked specifically to create new choreography “in the style of Fosse” for a one-weekend concert-staging productions of Chicago, that was so popular it became the 1996 Chicago revival. The number they are dancing above was choreographed by Ann; meant to be a stylistic tribute to Fosse, not derivative or even a twice-removed evolution of his original work, and she won the Tony for the choreography (by contrast, she shared a choreography award in 1998 with the posthumous Fosse for the choreography on the Fosse musical, because it incorporated her new choreography with his original).

    • @hillarystone7506
      @hillarystone7506 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RagenRibbonz that is what I thought. All the choreography in the revival was created by Ann. I know that when Jennifer Nettles played Roxie Hart, Ann came to perfect the choreography one day.

    Something about talent: yes you work your ass off for YEARS and practice 1000 times every little bit, but essentially, talent is that it is EASIER and more natural and fun from the beginning to just do that thing than for those who don't have talent. see 00:49 to 00:51.

    I love my Ann. Those legs, flying through the air. I miss you girl. See you later.

    Bebe is great! But Ann was far smoother in her moves. Water in motion! 😍

      Bebe is playing Velma who was originally played by Chita Rivera. Gwen Verdon was the original Roxie played here by Ann Reinking

    I wonder how Reinking felt by being out Fosse'ed by Neuwirth in this show.
