Hi Glen, regarding the Fantails/pīwakawakas you saw on the Alex Knob track near Franz Josef. The fantail follows walkers to capture insects disturbed by their movements.

Another excellent videos guys. You certainly know how to do this! I'm so glad you are getting the most out of our beautiful country. I've been living on the road now for ten years and plan to head into the deep south again later this year. You have discovered so many of places that I have missed because I didn't know they existed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
If you're keen on a bit of a tramp & you like hot pools, you should check out the Copland Track when you're down that way. It's a 17km tramp but well worth it & so nice to soak in the hot pools after a day of tramping 😊.
The glacier won't melt completely in my opinion, but all glaciers have been retreating since the end of the little ice age a few hundred years ago. You can see pictures of Franz Josef or Fox glacier from around 1900 when it went right down the valley to sea level.
You should be seeing little robins as well. Tiny tiny little birds. They aren't shy. Fantails will do their best to keep the biting bugs from you, as they live on them.😊

Pleased to see you guys still enjoying your stay in our country. I have visited Fox and Franz Josef glaciers twice now and couldn't get over how far and how fast they had disappeared. The West Coast is an awesome place, just the pesky sand flies are a pain.

Wow that has really shrunk even in the last 10 years. I did a helihike to Franz Josef back then and it was considerably further down - well below that dark patch in the middle
30 years ago, I walked to the terminal of Fox Glacier, along the road from the village took just over an hour, it as retreated so far now.
Yeah it’s pretty sad! The time will come that it will disappear eventually unfortunately 😩
Shame you didn't find the hot-pools in Franz Josef - so good after a long hike!

thanks guys I really enjoyed seeing Franz again and the back streets I wandered. I was there 15 yrs ago. My hellicopter trip onto the glacier was an experience not to be forgot but oh, how the glacier has receded in that time..
@robertwalker7924 we walked up into- onto The Glacier. No choppers in the 70’s just tourists. Heaps cars parked at the edge the road. Guides walked around groups.👍🏼

I’d say it was magical but definitely out of our budget! One ride for both of us is nearly a month shopping! 👀

Great video. Although be extremely careful if you swim in the west coast Beach's. They can be very dangerous because of the rip tide and the under current

I'm coming back down Sth in May. Try to get down every year or so. Will take my time this time and try to search out places you have been, Fulltime nomad 6 yrs, so back and forth between Auckland and Chch normally, but will go easy this time. Not rush so much. Wish diesel would go down in price a bit more though. It really hurts the wallet to go too far nowadays!!😊 Freedom camping around Auckland atm 👍🙋🏼♀️🚐🌞

Im sure you could find a spot in the bushes! its quite wild down that way!
The fantails are after the mosquitoes, midges and others that a person will attract, so they'll fly around you to catch them. (They will like you both too as we do!)

The alpine fault runs tight through the town. Geo fault are concerned about the petrol station. As if it earthquake splits at that point the town could shift both ways. But who knows earthquakes do what they won’t, humans do have any control.
There was a fairly decent quake centred in Milford Sound in the past few days even. Magnitude 5.6! 😯
Strong enough that it was felt across the entire country.
@@martyknox2218 yep they have some massive one’s in Fiordland. Had one in 209 in the puysegur Trench in Southland, that was a 7.8 . Just lucky no one really lives in the sounds down there.

Regarding the mushrooms, don't eat the mushrooms... Unless you find a local expert... Say like a teenager... And they say they are magic mushrooms... You might find reality again in a week, or a year... Or in never never land... 😎
