I’ve rediscovered my love of Mariah Carey through your videos. Her artistry is unparalleled. She’s simply the best. You’re doing the lord’s work with these videos.
Sick. This is one of the first songs I ever heard on a CD when they were a rare thing and only my rich Uncle in Sydney had a stand alone one hooked up to his high end system........back in what 1991? I used to be obsessed with Robert Clivile and David Cole from C+C music factory who co wrote/produced the track. Looks like Trey Lorenz and David Cole also sang in those BVs. The mix is such a classic early 90s SSL mix with that sheen and punch they were known for
7:12 oh wow this sounds like straight up 90’s freestyle. That just blew my mind. I’ve always thought of this track as pop/gospel but those drums and that synth sound like 1991 NYC freestyle. So funny.
this was so fun! and yes, emotions can definitely be mashed up with other old school grooves! it's such a fun, uptempo record and it honestly makes me feel happy everytime i listen to it! mariah is a legend: a singer-songwriter AND producer with a one in a million voice! and it's totes cool man, i don't mind seeing just your cute face on the screen 😅🐻 subscribing for the producer geekiness, the music, and you 😄
its such a great song! i really love Mariah she has enjoyed such a great career and i WILL be doing the greatest modern Christmas carol of all time "all i want for christmas is you" eventually too. thanks so much for Subscribing
She did go to court over Emotions and I can't remember if she won or just settled. It was meant to be sort of a homage but Mariah has a knack for doing things that other artists do all the time, and being taken super seriously over it. This was like year two of her career as well, so it would have been extra hard to know if she was coming from an homage or a plagiarism place. 24:01 this is why I love Mariah Carey. I'm 40 years old now and I'm still being amazed. Listen to that completely fucking unpretentious vocal. No drama, no theater, just a fucking voice that is good. And should be recorded. 28:38 also thank you for this. So tired of people acting annoyed (*ahem* jealous) about the most perfectly in tune and pleasant-sounding whistle tone ever produced. 33:00 duuuude you left out the last whistles! Ah well.
Noooooo! I’m sorry I left out the last whistles!! I’ll try and add them to the next Mariah Vid for you if I remember. Yeah I think Wikipedia said she settled out of court with Maurice White and/or the emotions. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch this in such detail. It means a lot to me that you can enjoy it along with me. Thankyou Christine
Mariah - one of the Greatest Of All Time. Thanks for sharing this and analysing all the tracks. Another interesting song to hear broken down. Yes, I did use to think this song resembled Emotions' Best Of My Love. Thanks for the trivia. I love both songs by the way. This song definitely showcases Mariah's extensive vocal range. So good to hear her vocals isolated as well - another proof she is the real deal. Mariah Carey is such an extraordinary singer and songwriter and has worked with some incredible producers. I love how her signature is to layer her voice on her songs (especially after the bridge of a song) to have multiple melodies running simultaneously. If you are able to receive these, it would be great if you could analyse more of her songs - I'm especially thinking Vision Of Love (similar to Whitney Houston, may she rise in peace, they both delivered melisma really well), Honey (one of my all time favourites even the Bad Boy Remix), Fantasy, Always Be My Baby or any of her songs that it's possible to share (Mariah has an amazing catalogue of music / body of work).
So funny cos you've done exactly what I'd do if I had access to the stems & the tools to toy with them. Like go back over & over again to the whistles LOL
10:16 - you sang "To be Real" by Cheryl Lynn and not "Best of my Love" ; I get them confused also....Thanks for the vids; barely discovered your channel and its amazing how when it's all mixed you can't hear certain noises as they blend in so well to have an effect on certain parts of the song. This is one of my fav Mariah songs.
holy crap i did! Ironically the copyright owners are giving me a REAL hard time with this one. considering the song is AT LEAST two other songs I'm puzzled as to why they want to bother me over its use. maybe its because they don't know who to pay royalties to? hahaha thanks so much Midnight Shady. Im so lucky to have a great audience like yourself. thanks! be sure to sub because theres more where that came from.
@LambilyXDaydream aww that sucks, thanks for the info tho!! btw, if you don’t mind answering what’s a glottal whistle and if it’s different then a regular whistle how so? (i’ve heard of it a few times and tried to look it up but i can’t really find it)
I am fairly certain that the liner notes show that "Emotions" credited the samples, but it has been years since I looked at the liner notes for the album. I remember that there was a settlement for "Can't Let Go" or "Make It Happen".
"It Must Be Love" Alston McClain and Destiny is the song and group you're thinking of. It has the groove of "Best Of My Love" also. Mariah vocals are incredible. My son produced her song "Infinity."
I love your enthusiasm and passion for this stuff. So, Mariah and Sony never denied that they sampled Best of My Love by the Emotions, but they used more of the song than was legal, so they wound up having to pay up. I believe, correct me if I am wrong, you can use a certain amount of bars of a song legally without having to pay up but they used too much of the song that it really isn't considered a sample.
I have a working theory that Walter Afanaseiff is a crook who bites from others' songs all the time. MC can't compose her own music bc she doesn't play instruments so her and Walter would collaborate on building the instrumental of her songs. He did this (emotions), her song Anytime You Need A Friend (which sounds a lot like Michael Sterling's Lovers & Friends but is not credited as a sample), and Michael Bolton's Love Is A Wonderful Thing (which lost a lawsuit for "unintentionally" ripping off an Isley Brothers song of the same name, which I highly doubt MB knew about). But the powerful Sony machine was able to get away with stuff like this. Slightly unrelated, MC thought Walter was her friend but he later turned his back on her when she was going through her divorce from Tommy Mattola.
This is deep!!! I COMPEL you to please start a channel and put these theories together as a podcast series or something i would be fascinated to hear them!
Thanks for noticing Cory! Haha 65+ episodes and you’re the first to say anything! Haha I try my best to get the correct covers up. I’m thinking about adding them to the thumbnails for future videos.
