Most people don’t know this but Michael actually recorded the background harmonies in the havenhurst home studio with a makeshift shower setup in the bathroom.

This is so cool. Long time ago I had sung on top of Liberian Girl on tape and that was fun. I don't know how to control vibrato though.....it was a mystery to me on how MJ voice goes into harmonies and choirs. I feel like Chris has open the door in the studio where himself, Quincy, and MJ is working and I'm allowed to have a seat and listen right there. This is so cool. I'm so grateful to tune in.
One of my favorite MJ songs actually. Along with "I can't help it" Not many singers in music history can hold a candle to MJ with his vocals. He was equally as good on up tempo as ballads. Freddie Mercury is right up there too.
Before MJ made a song from the combined tracks, and now you present the whole song in pieces.Thank you so much for this process,it's amazing how MJ made the greatest songs.Amazing and very interesting..... and that vocal by MJ.....Woooow!!!!!
As one of my favourite MJ songs I've heard all of these nuances having listened to the song for the last 35 years every so often. His voice is taken for granted nowadays and because modern vocalists don't have these kinds of nuances and Michael used his voice to set the scene and build emotion, it wasn't just to show off how good he could sing. Also the use of synthesisers is just because back then in the 80s he wanted to try different things. He came up in the 60s so wanted to build different textures and feelings rather than everything sounding brassy and jazzy all the time.
His very very expressed emotion + talent is what gives so much expression. When I sing I hold back... I get self conscious.. He is the polar opposite. Being as seemingly shy as he was, he let everything out in recording. I also think just practicing that melisma technique can help with when you wanna add expression. Not to overdo it, but to put it in at all.
This channel and video was a decent recommendation from TH-cam. Glad I can see and hear passionate, skilled and technical analyses of my all time favourite artist by someone who clearly appreciates and respects what he’s in possession of. What a treat :)
srsly ever since I watched your michael jackson's multitracks breakdown, I can hear more clearly the details michael put into his other songs; his mouth percussion, the calling-answer part, the singing technique.. and how it all blended perfectly it's so insane! i wanna thank you so bad for making this, you help me discover even further about MJ's musicality and as you said YES it's so fun to listen to with this kind of mindset in mind. I hope your secret source will give In The Closet multitracks next tho afsfsgkl but I'll watch whatever MJ's breakdown you'll present to us anyway, bcs they way you deliver/analyze them is so interesting in its own way ❤
I can probably explain the overloading of the mic preamp: MJ used an SM7B for a lot of his early recordings. It‘s a very power-hungry mic and MJ‘s quiet parts have to somehow be picked up, so they put the gain way up.
Thanks for sharing Chris! Love these! Those Background vocals in the outro "Giiiiiirlll" - WOW - I'm speechless - the standard he set for background vocals - They seem just as important to his songs as his lead vocal!
My favorite 💖 Fell in love with it the first time I heard it. His voice makes me melt. Lady in my Life and Cant Help it are right up there with it. 💘💘💘
It was just amazing to be able to hear isolated vocal tracks for this beautiful song. I used to listen to this song several times to catch the nuances. Now it’s here, what a pleasure!
Okay, had to watch this 3 times before getting all my thoughts together. I love it when someone calls out details that I've previously noticed in MJ's masterpieces! I thought I was the only crazy person in the world and that I'm too much of a fanboy. This is hands down my favorite MJ song of all times (lyrically and musically speaking), and I'm always air drumming to it, and imitating different sounds and instruments whenever I hear it. As Quincy Jones put it: "Liberian Girl? Who would come up with something like that?!". It's just unmatched from a creative perspective and all these new elements that I'm hearing with the help of your video have made me fall in love with it even more (like that was even possible). This has smoothness oozing out of it, every single sound seems like it was hand picked and perfectly put there in the mix to make up the whole master. Incredible! Thank you so much for this video, Chris! You made a man smile today, if that matters to you
One of the most beautiful songs in pop music history PERIOD. And seriously underrated incredible vocals and production. Should have been number 1 for a year. Nothing has touched it since.
Wow, Chris thank you so much for sharing this analysis, it was a journey to go through all. We can just imagine and replicate as a producer, but how immensely creative MJ was on his every single song was commendable to learn through your exploration and technology. Once again thank you.
That weird sound Micheal makes around 16:28 is a sound used by the Nguni speaking people and the Sans (originators of South Africa) in South Africa. It’s called clique sounds, they are easily done by the mouth since those above tribes use it to speak the q letter or the x letter. It’s very difficult to do that especially for a person who has never done it, it does require practice and can be done effortlessly (like Michael) if little force is used to make the two letters (q and x) sound like clicks.
“More precious THAAAN any pearl” has always been my favorite part of this song!! His voice sounds like a saxophone (although sax was meant to sound like voice of course lol). Can’t get enough of that part lol!
hi! wow what i video!! i’m a hugeee MJ fan like anyone else here, and Liberian Girl is my favourite MJ song. it’s one of his most underrated songs in my opinion.. i don’t think anyone can actually measure his creativity with his music and him as an artist. wow i LOVED this video! thank you for your amazing content 🤍

Most people don’t know this but Michael actually recorded the background harmonies in the havenhurst home studio with a makeshift shower setup in the bathroom.
19:44 Such a gorgeous timeless song!! This part makes me feel like its a modern Gregorian chant! I'm so proud to be part of the generation to hear it 1st! 😍💞😭 What a great experience to hear your reactions and analysis! I didn't mind the pauses!
This song is a dark, rainy humid night. Sexy & mysterious 🌩️
Before MJ made a song from the combined tracks, and now you present the whole song in pieces.Thank you so much for this process,it's amazing how MJ made the greatest songs.Amazing and very interesting..... and that vocal by MJ.....Woooow!!!!!
This is my favorite MJ song ….. and the way you break this down is magical ….. Thankyou !!!!
Thanks for being here!
One of my favourite MJ songs. Seriously underrated of course. Loved the breakdown of his vocals! I hope there are more videos on him 😁🙏❤️🙏
srsly ever since I watched your michael jackson's multitracks breakdown, I can hear more clearly the details michael put into his other songs; his mouth percussion, the calling-answer part, the singing technique.. and how it all blended perfectly it's so insane! i wanna thank you so bad for making this, you help me discover even further about MJ's musicality and as you said YES it's so fun to listen to with this kind of mindset in mind. I hope your secret source will give In The Closet multitracks next tho afsfsgkl but I'll watch whatever MJ's breakdown you'll present to us anyway, bcs they way you deliver/analyze them is so interesting in its own way ❤
11:24 that kick/snare fill is golden
19:47 articulation and agility
Such great production
Really the most underrated & best song of MJ!!
I can probably explain the overloading of the mic preamp: MJ used an SM7B for a lot of his early recordings. It‘s a very power-hungry mic and MJ‘s quiet parts have to somehow be picked up, so they put the gain way up.
Oh wow. Thanks.
Thank you
That layering, reverb and harmony
Thanks for sharing Chris! Love these! Those Background vocals in the outro "Giiiiiirlll" - WOW - I'm speechless - the standard he set for background vocals - They seem just as important to his songs as his lead vocal!
Omg 🤯 his harmonies on this track are so alluring…he’s the only one 👑
Wish MJ would of sung this live especially on The Bad Tour
with Letta Mbulu. she is the Xhosa girl whispering in the beginning.
Yes
Are there still musicians like Michael Jackson today? NO!!!
No, just by the nature of how things are recorded and produced... very different :(
Well… maybe unfair comment
Drake😂🤣😂🤣🤣just kidding but he swears he’s all of that!!
Bruno Mars?
@@ratsochicknlove Never!
Wow an incredible harmonic vocal and background vocals of MJ ..He is truly my legendary musician
Unbelievable vocalist!
Wow! these Vocalperformances of MJ are absolute incredible. GOOSEBUMPS!
My favorite MJ song. Your breakdowns are brilliant. Thank you!
I CRIED. Too beautiful, I have no words …♾
6:35 is pure magic.
My favorite 💖 Fell in love with it the first time I heard it. His voice makes me melt. Lady in my Life and Cant Help it are right up there with it. 💘💘💘
That end part - hearing his isolated "preachy rock" vocals, and the choir... Such art, it brought me to tears.
It was just amazing to be able to hear isolated vocal tracks for this beautiful song. I used to listen to this song several times to catch the nuances. Now it’s here, what a pleasure!
The best MJ song, wonderful hearing these isolated tracks!
It's very good and very powerful seeing how the layers come together
My favorite MJ song. #LongliveMJ
MJ had perfect pitch!!!! Scientifically proven!
You made a man smile today, if that matters to you
I can’t believe you did this . It’s absolutely one of my favorite of all time.
You’re the best bro
Mine too!
@@chrisliepe bro do Ne-Yo, they tones and are similar to and can u Bruno Mars one they all similar
One of the most beautiful songs in pop music history PERIOD. And seriously underrated incredible vocals and production. Should have been number 1 for a year. Nothing has touched it since.
I'm still yet to hear a song anything quite like this. Truly one of a kind record and artist.
Amazing!!! So much wealth brought out of MJ's voice, and how the production supports his voice too. Awesome!!!!
This will ALWAYS be 1 of my all time fave MJ joints😉👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Can’t get enough of that part lol!
hi! wow what i video!! i’m a hugeee MJ fan like anyone else here, and Liberian Girl is my favourite MJ song. it’s one of his most underrated songs in my opinion.. i don’t think anyone can actually measure his creativity with his music and him as an artist. wow i LOVED this video! thank you for your amazing content 🤍
he felt that song! thats the thing that sets MJ apart. 😍 keep it comin. i love these videos
The goat for a reason a true studied of the greats and embodied them all in one
Now that was one hell of a journey to the recording room of the 80s, where this was recorded to be a part of Bad LP. Thank you as always, for the content itself as well as the quality of the stems. So good.
