There's a line in the bar scene (7:37, not shown in this reaction) where Paul Newman says "I cut myself so bad shaving that my eyes almost cleared up". What that meant was when people drink alcohol to excess, sometimes their eyes get bloodshot (they get red eyes). So, he meant that the blood from his red eyes drained OUT of his eyes because he bled so much from his shaving mishap. Get it? The joke being that he's a total drunk throughout his entire day, every day-- he's even still wasted when he wakes up in the morning. Took me a couple seconds to get it myself, and it's actually quite funny (albeit some dark humor about alcoholism). Also, Paul Newman's character constantly uses eye drops in the film to clear up his red eyes to hide his alcoholism from his clients. Newman came up with that idea, it wasn't scripted.

Frank's final argument to the jury (not shown in reaction) was a great moment in the film. At that moment, he thinks he might have lost the case because of the way the judge ruled on the evidence. He needs the jury to see past that. "You are the law" he tells them. The line has stuck with me since.

Paul Newman was nominated for the Oscar for this movie, and in most years would have stood an excellent chance of winning. • @brachiator1
    @brachiator1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I love The Verdict. The director, Sidney Lumet, the screenwriter and the superb cast are all at the top of their game. Paul Newman downplays all his charm and charisma to show us a loser character totally at the last dregs of his miserable life, grasping at a final chance to regain his dignity. And the entire film, with its measured pace and dark interiors, reflect the lawyer's despair. But Lumet also deploys a piece of subtle visual storytelling to hint at the lawyer's fight to regain his lost honor. He takes a Polaroid photo of the injured woman lying in her hospital bed. And as the film reveals the woman's condition, the lawyer sees not an easy payday, but a life worth fighting for. A wonderful scene, played without a line of dialogue.
This was a great reaction to follow, made more enjoyable when we learn that Mary has a legal background. I've been hoping that the TH-cam community would discover this wonderful film. With Mary, we could not ask for a better person to comment on this film.

This is one of my favorite lawyer movies. I don’t know why it isn’t covered more but you are the perfect one to do so. It first came out when I just started my legal career. (40 years ago-yikes) Very realistic in most respects if not in the procedural details. The pinball machine resonates with me as I would always play to get focused before a law exam.
A couple of notes: Frank breached an ethical duty when he failed to convey the settlement offer. While the judge here was over the top they will frequently “encourage” acceptance of settlement offers.
For another one I recommend “Body Heat” starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. Great neo film noir. Not so much a courtroom drama as a dark mystery with a legal setting. (When I was first admitted to the bar the judge quoted it.)

After filming was done, Paul Newman generously walked to the folks watching, shook hands, and signed autographs. A truly nice, humble man. He was nominated for an Oscar, but didn’t win, going against Kingsley, O’Toole, Hoffman, and Lemmon … no first names necessary!!!!
Ghandi, My Favorite Year, Tootsie, and Missing … as well as this flick, Hollywood has maybe 1 decent picture a year now. So sad.

Directed by the great Sidney Lumet. Lumet also directed one of my favorite movies of all time -another courtroom masterpiece, "12 Angry Men." Movie trivia -Jack Warden (Mickey) was Juror #7 in 12 Angry Men. One of Paul Newman's best performances.

Another "legal movie" that I've already recommended under a different reaction is "Runaway Jury" with John Cusack, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman and Rachel Weisz.
If you're interested in more movies by director Sidney Lumet (who already gave you "12 Angry Men" before "The Verdict"), then I want to strongly recommend his final masterpiece "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead", but also some of his highly respected work from the 70s, especially "Network".

    Recommendations:
A Civil Action (1998), starring John Travolta

And Justice for All (1979), starring Al Pacino

For more Jack Warden (Mickey), try And Justice for All (1979) with Al Pacino, Shampoo (1975) with Warren Beatty and Being There (1979) with Peter Sellers. I think you may have already seen him as baseball loving Juror #7 in 12 Angry Men (1957) with Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb.

At 24:50, as soon as the judge started asking his own questions, and not for clarification purposes on questions posed, the lawyer should have immediately claimed "Apprehension of Bias" and had the judge recused.

For courtroom scenes, I'd recommend The Rainmaker with Matt Damon. Another John Grisham novel adaptation you might like with a family law scene is The Client.
You might also enjoy The Insider and A Civil Action, two movies about real class action lawsuits.

For more James Mason (opposing Attorney Concannon), try Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959) with Cary Grant, George Cukor’s A Star is Born (1954) with Judy Garland and Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita (1962) with Shelley Winters. He also played WWII German Field Marshall in two (North Africa theater) war films, The Desert Fox (1951) with Jessica Tandy and The Desert Rats (1953) with Richard Burton.

What a great reaction. This has always been one of my favorite films and one of my favorite Paul Newman performances. He should have won the academy award. The small but consequential role of Lindsay Crouse as the admitting nurse is one the the most gut wrenching performances in film. You feel her pain.
As an aside, we have Jack Warden and Edward Binns appearing in the movie. They were two of the jurors in Lumet’s first movie which you’ve already reacted to, 12 Angry Men.
I’d like to recommend another courtroom drama, not as well done necessarily as the Lumet films, but gripping nonetheless. It is called Class Action and it stars Gene Hackman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, who are both superb.

You need to understand something about this story. When the doctor ordered her to change a "1" to a "9" on the medical chart, he committed a felony. And everyone on the defense knew it, the lawyer, the Bishop, the hospital, the other nurse. Even the corrupt judge knew it. You don't settle such cases. Ever. You bankrupt them. Which is what makes this such a rewarding and redemptive story.

Hi Mary, you've found a thriller today. I hope that you become a fan of " Old Blue Eyes " and seek out his movies. By the way, he graciously excepted judging the group of beauties in our high school yearbook. He did a fine job. His spaghetti sauces are good, and the profits go to charities. As is often shouted in unison on the streets of Kyoto, Japan: " Hey! "

Good to see you watching a trial movie and one that is not watched much anymore. And its a good one too. But the two absolute best trial movies ever made are biopics: Steven Spielberg's, AMISTAD and Oliver Stone's, JFK. People today, however, don't seem to know about them, as this is the only reason I can imagine they are not being recommended. But trust me. You will be blown away by both of them.
