The family is just cashing in on Schultz's idea. The second trailer looked like it took away all of the magic of the originals and replaced it with CGI. It's quite sad actually.

I really hope that Minions doesn't end up grossing more than Inside Out. I can't believe people are letting their kids drag them to a movie with absolutely no creativity whatsoever when they could be seeing such future classics as Inside Out or Mad Max: Fury Road.
While I agree with you about Inside Out, I find your addition of Mad Max in your reasoning to be a bit odd. No child is going to want to see that movie (unless they have the best fucking parents around) and that's kinda the sort of thing that you have to expect with R rated movies. Now with teenagers and adults not seeing it, that's a whole other story and in my mind is completely unacceptable.

Um I think youre mistaken the main audience and frequent goers are 16+ I went to see this cos Jurassic World wasn't in 3D at that cinema and my friends are annoying, and the audience had 2 rows of kids with their parents and everyone else was either girls a lot of them 20+ or couples where the guy didn't look interested at all.
I thought the biggest issue with the film was that is has no story. It's funny and enjoyable and kids will adore it but they won't get a lot from it. Compared to the first two there is nothing really meaningful. It's a caper movie or an extended looney tunes cartoon. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it, I did quite a bit, but it wasn't as good as the first two.

I saw it and loved it. I am a 26 year old kid at heart. I literally laughed at all the funny parts in Minions. It is for kids, and parents without an open mind will not get anything from the movie. I really felt like the adults in the theater did laugh at some parts, but other then those parts they fell asleep.

I just want to say Jeremy I have started to do movie reviews myself, and you are my main inspiration to make movie reviews. You are my hero. Because I have a speech impediment in which I get stuck on words and syllables. Which you can not notice very much in the videos because I do multiple takes and I thought this would be a good way to get better at speaking. Btw I gave it 2/3. I have been waiting waiting and waiting for next year because of the normally large amount of animated movies coming to theaters, but it just hit me. I can not wait for your reviews of Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, and Zootopia. Those movies look fantastic and I can't freaking wait.
One thing I definitely can give kudos to the filmmakers for is they kept the soundtrack free of modern pop songs. Instead going for songs from the 60's, when the film takes place. I did not expect that decision to be in the film, but it definitely helped the cartoonish and over the top nature of the film. How does it rank compared to the other animated films from this year? It's better than Strange Magic or Home, but nowhere near as good as Inside Out. It shares a spot with The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water, It does its own cartoonish, well soundtracked thing.
In my opinion, the characters that were most suited for spin-offs recently were the Penguins of Madagascar. Strangely, that movie has a lower average rating (on Rotten Tomatoes) than its predecessor while Puss in Boots and Minions outdid their predecessors.
I remember being absolutely excited to see the Penguins get their own movie cause you're right, they were perfect for a spinoff film. Then the movie sucked. 😧

I love Jeremy's reviews. I am one who does not rely on a critic's reviews because in the end it's about my sensibilities. Take that for what it's worth, or not. Minions was AWESOME-TACULAR. It was brave, funny, did not apologies and was obviously self-aware of what it was. As to the scenes a few reviewer say might not be right for kids. . .they're kids. If you make a big deal they will, if you don't they won't. No kid is going to see a minion in a hot tub with fire hydrants and go "Are they insinuating a threesome?" Because they are kids, they don't care. For adults, this movie is friggin hilarious. There are jokes that kids will laugh at but adults will get. Like all of us, those jokes will probably catch up to kids when the get older and realize, "Hey, wait minute. . .I just got that in a different way." It's not too long, it comes in, does what it does then ends. And it does call back to the movies it's spinning off from. Not to mention Michael Keaton has an awesome cameo. This is Minions. They aren't trying to make any intellectual commentary, they aren't trying to change the world, they aren't trying to find higher meaning in the higher meaning. They are minions, WYSIWYG. I highly recommend this movie for all ages, alcohol, non-alcohol, psychotropic or not. For me it was a 5/5.

You know, during the part where giant Kevin is battling Scarlet in London like that, the police and SWAT or whatever would immediately come and put a stop to it. That would happen in real life if a deadly battle like that in a big city occurred.
I was made to go see this with my younger cousin and I ended up enjoying it. It definitely won't be one of my favorite films of the year and I won't be going back and re-watching it constantly; but I don't regret watching it and I was genuinely entertained by it overall.

barryredfield Forced was probably a strong word. I was having a late birthday celebration with my aunt, uncle, and cousin and they decided to treat me to a movie. "Minions" is the only movie out right now that they felt comfortable with my cousin seeing. She's only five.

I'm an adult and a huge fans of minions in general. But I have to say this review is spot on. I was smiling here and there but rarely really laughed. They really are the perfect sidekick but they cant carry a movie for all audiences. Kids will love it and thats awesome, but dont expect too much of it as an adult.

Whilst watching the review I presumed Jeremy would give Minions good time if you're drunk and I thought of a bunch of employees handing beers to small children walking into the theater saying to them, "This is the best way to enjoy the film."

Here's my review. 3 / 10 (roughly Jeremy's "Good Time if You're Drunk") What an incredibly cute and annoying train wreck. All the good stuff's in the trailer. Mostly I was just bored listening to incomprehensible gibberish. I could DO that in the "Despicable Me" films, because they were at least doing interesting things, and then slapstick occurred. This just wasn't. It's somehow incredibly predictable while still managing to be horribly contrived as well. The kids watching it didn't even seem that impressed. I laughed a few times, but even at an hour and a half it felt long. Unless you're a die-hard fan of the critters I'd only rent this as a curiousity.

Being a British Canadian and having lived in London I really enjoyed this film as I probably got more of the jokes and references in London than most other people in America, or Australia or anywhere else, no I am not a child I am above the age of 20 and took my nephew to see this, so that is probably why it isnt as appealing as other films to an American or foreign market.
I totally agree with you! I myself am not a fan of the Despicable me-series. I could never really grasp which audience the movies tried to target. Because on the one hand there are (too) many slapstick-scenes which kids find hilarious, but on the other hand so much stuff that even grown ups can have a hard time to understad (who is Gru and why is he so mean but also brilliant? Where do the minions come from? Why do they help him etc). Minions the spin off movie seemed both promising and both carped out of the same material as the Despicable movies. On the one hand I thought it COULD be fun, because, look what Dreamworks did with Penguins of Madagascar, I LOVED that movie because of them! But the Minions focus too much on slapstick. Exactly as you said, that's their thing, that's what kids like about them. Easy to understand and funny looking and funny acting. So all in all, I didn't like the movie at all. I became bored pretty early in the movie.

Had high hopes for this movie but they work better in Despicable Me as side Characters rather than main ones. Cant wait to see Inside Out !!!

Jeremy should do a review for Agents of SHIELD season 1 and season 2 (after Comic Con), both seasons are on Netflix so you can watch them, season 3 premieres September 29, it's probably gonna be like Arrow last year, Jeremy watched Arrow Season 1 after numerous suggestions and liked it, he also liked Arrow Seasons 2 and 3 but thought the latter season divided fans, I personally thought Arrow Season 3 was alright but I'm cautiously optimistic about Arrow Season 4. I also hope he does an Ant Man review.
I like your "garnish" comment... there are a TON of actors I feel fit into this slot: Jack Black, WIll Farrel are tops among them (yeah, I know I'll be pilloried for this, but I don't like either of them as the focus of a movie - not my style). Jack Black in Enemy of the State was great. School of Rock made me cry.
Funny thing is, if you speak several languages you can understand them pretty well. It is a mix of english, italian, german and spanish words. Also some cultural stuff. For example when one of the minions calls a fireplug "Papagena" witch is a characters name in a opera by Mozart. Movie was not great but Ok. The soudtrack was pretty cool!
I love both of the Despicable Me movies, I think they're fantastic and clever Minions was nowhere near as good though. As you said, it relies heavily on slapstick humour and yellow dwarves yelling "BANANA" and I really don't find that entertaining It was heavily decent for what it is. A prequel spin off

I saw it last sunday with my son who is 9 and he loved it! And I tolerated it because it's a movie for kids, a cartoon. There is no need for dark humour or references only adults will get in all of the cartoons that's made right now.

I have been waiting waiting and waiting for next year because of the normally large amount of animated movies coming to theaters, but it just hit me. I can not wait for your reviews of Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, and Zootopia. Those movies look fantastic and I can't freaking wait.

One thing I definitely can give kudos to the filmmakers for is they kept the soundtrack free of modern pop songs. Instead going for songs from the 60's, when the film takes place. I did not expect that decision to be in the film, but it definitely helped the cartoonish and over the top nature of the film.
How does it rank compared to the other animated films from this year?
It's better than Strange Magic or Home, but nowhere near as good as Inside Out. It shares a spot with The Spongebob Movie: Sponge out of Water, It does its own cartoonish, well soundtracked thing.

In my opinion, the characters that were most suited for spin-offs recently were the Penguins of Madagascar. Strangely, that movie has a lower average rating (on Rotten Tomatoes) than its predecessor while Puss in Boots and Minions outdid their predecessors.
Well the Penguins movie was pretty cut and dry in my opinion. The Penguins humor was there and was top notch, but everything else was just kinda eh

I love Jeremy's reviews. I am one who does not rely on a critic's reviews because in the end it's about my sensibilities. Take that for what it's worth, or not. Minions was AWESOME-TACULAR. It was brave, funny, did not apologies and was obviously self-aware of what it was. As to the scenes a few reviewer say might not be right for kids. . .they're kids. If you make a big deal they will, if you don't they won't. No kid is going to see a minion in a hot tub with fire hydrants and go "Are they insinuating a threesome?" Because they are kids, they don't care. For adults, this movie is friggin hilarious. There are jokes that kids will laugh at but adults will get. Like all of us, those jokes will probably catch up to kids when the get older and realize, "Hey, wait minute. . .I just got that in a different way." It's not too long, it comes in, does what it does then ends. And it does call back to the movies it's spinning off from. Not to mention Michael Keaton has an awesome cameo. This is Minions. They aren't trying to make any intellectual commentary, they aren't trying to change the world, they aren't trying to find higher meaning in the higher meaning. They are minions, WYSIWYG. I highly recommend this movie for all ages, alcohol, non-alcohol, psychotropic or not. For me it was a 5/5.

I love it when adult jokes are put subtly in there. The kid won't get it until he/she is much older. Unlike some stuff that comes out now where the adult joke is blatantly obvious.

I was made to go see this with my younger cousin and I ended up enjoying it. It definitely won't be one of my favorite films of the year and I won't be going back and re-watching it constantly; but I don't regret watching it and I was genuinely entertained by it overall.

barryredfield Forced was probably a strong word. I was having a late birthday celebration with my aunt, uncle, and cousin and they decided to treat me to a movie. "Minions" is the only movie out right now that they felt comfortable with my cousin seeing. She's only five.
Whovian Roxas Fair enough. I have a 3 year old niece that is really into Disney movies so I understand. Sometimes these types of movies have the type of humour that adults can appreciate as much as the younger audience that it is intended.

What I enjoy most of Jeremy's reviews is that he judges them on their own terms.
It is a kid's movie and if kids like it then it should not be derided on that level.

I kinda liked it but not as much as the other two because Minions to me work as side kicks and not as main characters. The reason I love the DM movies are because Gru and the kids.

I'm an adult and a huge fans of minions in general. But I have to say this review is spot on. I was smiling here and there but rarely really laughed. They really are the perfect sidekick but they cant carry a movie for all audiences. Kids will love it and thats awesome, but dont expect too much of it as an adult.

Im going to be 17 in less than a month but i saw this movie with my little sister and i immensely enjoyed it. I love where the story went and the setting was fun. It was also funny

What an incredibly cute and annoying train wreck. All the good stuff's in the trailer. Mostly I was just bored listening to incomprehensible gibberish. I could DO that in the "Despicable Me" films, because they were at least doing interesting things, and then slapstick occurred. This just wasn't. It's somehow incredibly predictable while still managing to be horribly contrived as well. The kids watching it didn't even seem that impressed. I laughed a few times, but even at an hour and a half it felt long. Unless you're a die-hard fan of the critters I'd only rent this as a curiousity.
Am I the only one that can determine a review by just looking at Jeremy's face in the thumbnail?

Have you seen the movie The Imposter, just watched it and it is amazing.
Being a British Canadian and having lived in London I really enjoyed this film as I probably got more of the jokes and references in London than most other people in America, or Australia or anywhere else, no I am not a child I am above the age of 20 and took my nephew to see this, so that is probably why it isnt as appealing as other films to an American or foreign market.
Why do the trailers and posters credit Sandra Bullock's character? It's not like Scarlett Overkill is a real life person or well known character...

I totally agree with you! I myself am not a fan of the Despicable me-series. I could never really grasp which audience the movies tried to target. Because on the one hand there are (too) many slapstick-scenes which kids find hilarious, but on the other hand so much stuff that even grown ups can have a hard time to understad (who is Gru and why is he so mean but also brilliant? Where do the minions come from? Why do they help him etc).
Minions the spin off movie seemed both promising and both carped out of the same material as the Despicable movies. On the one hand I thought it COULD be fun, because, look what Dreamworks did with Penguins of Madagascar, I LOVED that movie because of them! But the Minions focus too much on slapstick. Exactly as you said, that's their thing, that's what kids like about them. Easy to understand and funny looking and funny acting. So all in all, I didn't like the movie at all. I became bored pretty early in the movie.

I just felt that the story line kinda repeated itself though the movie e.g. Scarlet over kill not happy with Minions, she's gets pissed off wants revenge. Minions piss Scarlet over Kill off again, she wants revenge, Minions kinda win in the end by finding a new leader.
Had high hopes for this movie but they work better in Despicable Me as side Characters rather than main ones.

Went to see it the other day and I loved it. Am a fan of the Despicable Me movies and I feel like this works as a prequel/side story movie
Jeremy should do a review for Agents of SHIELD season 1 and season 2 (after Comic Con), both seasons are on Netflix so you can watch them, season 3 premieres September 29, it's probably gonna be like Arrow last year, Jeremy watched Arrow Season 1 after numerous suggestions and liked it, he also liked Arrow Seasons 2 and 3 but thought the latter season divided fans, I personally thought Arrow Season 3 was alright but I'm cautiously optimistic about Arrow Season 4. I also hope he does an Ant Man review.
I like your "garnish" comment... there are a TON of actors I feel fit into this slot: Jack Black, WIll Farrel are tops among them (yeah, I know I'll be pilloried for this, but I don't like either of them as the focus of a movie - not my style). Jack Black in Enemy of the State was great. School of Rock made me cry.
Funny thing is, if you speak several languages you can understand them pretty well. It is a mix of english, italian, german and spanish words. Also some cultural stuff. For example when one of the minions calls a fireplug "Papagena" witch is a characters name in a opera by Mozart. Movie was not great but Ok. The soudtrack was pretty cool!
All the best bits were in the trailers, if anyone hasn't seen it don't bother, wait for DVD or even Netflix

I saw it last sunday with my son who is 9 and he loved it! And I tolerated it because it's a movie for kids, a cartoon. There is no need for dark humour or references only adults will get in all of the cartoons that's made right now.
