You need to exercise everyday if you’re working night shift. Maintain a proper diet and try not to take much calories. Sleep in for atleast 7 to 8 hours in a dark room. That will always keep you healthy..

I work 10pm - 6:30am including weekends. I could honestly sit here for hours telling you about the pros and cons, but to be honest the pros are few and far between and sound better on paper than they do in practice. Long story short it'll drain the life out of you long term. Once in a while or a couple of months of year - fine, but constantly? No thanks, I'm done.
    - I'm constantly tired even on my days off because I'm in the pattern of going to bed morning and waking up in the late afternoon.
    - I have a very physical job so I'm exhausted from that alone and the fact that it's nightshifts on top just compounds it.
    - NO social life whatsoever.
    - I'm personally not on good money. It's actually only slightly above minimum wage here in Wales which is obviously horses%£t considering what I have to do.
    - It's lonely. Not many people around which again doesn't help your social life/skills.
    - No-one cares especially the Managers/Team Leaders. They think it's the same as any other shift - it is not.
    - Sleep problems, confusion, depression, digestive issues (yes that is a thing) and I can honestly say my libido has even taken a hit.
    - I could go on.
*Some* people like it, but I think night shift workers need to be well compensated for their efforts and only then would it be worth it. It's good as a stop gap job if you're struggling for money and it is something good to put on your CV, but I honestly can't recommend them unless you're desperate. I'm handing in my notice next month. I want my life back.

James Carmichael my libido is gone after 2 years night shift, at first I even liked a bit the feeling like being “drunk” during the day after waking up in the afternoon. I constantly feel zombie. Some days are less bad others are just terrible. It depends also if it’s summer or winter. Summer kills my sleep. Working night shift straight for two years destroyed myself. I feel like I’m not sleeping during the day and I wake up tired and dizzy.

Been on for 7yrs straight and your social life sucks and divorce rates go up for people on nights. Kids will likely suffer in school because you can't be accessible to them all the time because you are either tired or sleeping or a combination of both. Social gatherings and being social with friends will spiral as well. Before nights I was very outgoing and social. Night shift has robbed me of my social life. I'm single and it's hard to be with anyone while working these hours.

I have been working 3rd shift (10:00pm to 6:00am) for 15+ years. I have learned you have to get yourself on a schedule and stick with it. Sleep is the #1 priority. Without sleep your body and mind will not let you doing anything or at least do anything well. Take the time to make a schedule. Obviously if you are single or married or married with kids different schedule will work. It's a hit and miss situation. I workout at least 5 days a week and try to eat well however you will have those days that you just don't sleep well. In that case skip your workout and just try to get rest. I also officiate volleyball and basketball and sometimes that is up to 5 days a week, but that is something I love to do so it is very important to get sleep before I go do those things. Good luck everyone

ugh i have worked midnights (12-8) for 6 years now. The worst part is, it is a desk (dispatch) job. So i just sit all shift, and go home and sleep....my activity has dropped significantly and its starting to take its toll. I have this weird right leg circulation problem that seems to come and go, im assuming from sitting way too much. It feels like there is a knot in my thigh and my calf is swollen or tight. Also had a bad ankle sprain years ago on that side that i think did some type of permanent damage to my high ankle/calf. Im 33 years old, about 220lbs. I am trying to stay more active, i go to the gym a few days a week. I find that comfort food crept back into my diet as well when i started this job. Bless all the night shift workers, stay healthy!

Working night shifts is basically digging your own grave slowly but surely. The vast majority of night shifts today ends at 6, 7 or even 8 am. That means by the time you get back home, do your things and try to fall asleep the time will be 9 or 10 am. It’s very hard to fall asleep at these hours or get a good and continuous sleep while finally sleeping. You should end your night shifts at 3 am or max at 4 am so by the time you get back home it’s still dark outside and you fall asleep quite easily and fast. Then you can have a decent sleep until 12, 1 or 2 pm and you have the rest of the day to complete your daily missions. However, working at night until 6, 7 or even 8 is just fucking insanity. You will feel your head is about to explode and your blood pressure will be in extreme levels. My suggestions is working until 3 am max and then get home to sleep right away. In case you can’t work until 3 a.m, then try to sleep between 2 to 3 hours during the night shift itself(e.g., a security guard) and complete rest of the sleep when you get back home.

The moodiness no joke. I started working night shifts this year and already have I been getting frustrated with my husband for even the tiniest of things. The biggest one being his constant comments on how if he worked night shifts it wouldn't be so bad. He has never worked a night shift and it really ticks me off. Especially when I express how exhausted I am 24/7 with this job.
So note, if your spouse if working night shifts and you don't, don't tell them how easy you would find it. Night shifts are hard. Give them some slack

I jog 5 miles a day , eat around 1-2 meals a day pretty healthy . Then I drink meal replacement drink during my night shift. I also walk around 10 miles at work . But I haven’t been able to lose like any weight . I still strong with working out everyday but doesn’t seem to be enough. I work 9pm-6am everyday . What seems to be the problem ?

You answered your own question, it's nights that's stopping you losing weight.
Your body's weight gain/loss system is completely out of whack.
I know that most of the people on the nightshift I was on were all overweight

I live in Whitby Ontario. I tried snow shoveling at night with the Durham Property Maintenance for 1 day since December 1996. This was the worse traumatic experience horrified me is that not only I am special needs, but also working night shifts is my disability. This caused me so much emotional anger to the whole staff is that they endangered my life not understanding some intoxicated or uncontrollable driver killing any of the workers or me. This worker I had put me on this job made me mad enough making verbal abuse for endangering my life.

I have the same issue! I work nights usually 9pm-2am and seems no matter what I do I can’t lose weight! For me it’s caused by vitamin D deficiency which affects my thyroid! Try taking vitamin D supplements and get more sun. I was in much better shape when I worked day shift!

Hi Jason, I'm currently a part time CNA on a med surg floor at a hospital while in nursing school. Recently a new position opened up with my dream specialty in the Mother Baby Unit of my hospital but it's 3rd shift. I've been debating whether to apply or not because I know it will look great on my resume when I apply as a new grad nurse to a Mother Baby Unit in the future. But I don't know how I could balance my class schedule which begins at 8 am most days with a work schedule that would have shifts ending at 3 am. I am healthy, 19 years old but I want to do whats best for my health in the long run. What do you recommend?

    • @JasonRozinka
      @JasonRozinka  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a tough decision. I honestly feel that nursing school is stressful enough and having to work that third shift and go to school is tough. Not impossible, but definitely more difficult.
The experience you are getting as a CNA looks really good already. I personally worked as a landscaper and got hired right away, but I do realize starting as a new nurse on an OB floor is more difficult.
In the end your #1 focus should be school. Trust me after 25 years in nursing there is plenty of time to land that dream job.

Hello! I've worked at call centers for my entire life and this would be the first time working at a night shift. It would be from 12 am to 7 am. The shift is shorter than most shifts I've seen on the comments section and it's just sending emails. I am planning to sleep from 8 to 11 and wake up and then sleep from 7 to 1 and I am also working from home. Obviously my main goal is to get a developer job from 8 am to 5 but I'm still far from that. Do you think it would be sustainable to do or should I just look for other options?
