  • Garmin Bike Radar, what is the fuss all about! In this short video I will tell you of my experiences with the radar and how I connect it in three different ways to help increase my safety on the road using my Edge device, Garmin watch and the smartphone app. #garminvaria #bikesafety #garminradar

On the road in the city or out in the country you are naturally more careful. You expect cars at any time. On pathways or rail trails you tend to relax and check your mirrors less frequently. This puts you at risk of electric bikes which may be travelling at much greater speeds, and of course not using a bell to warn other cyclists. Just last night I missed being clobbered on a bike path by an e-biker. I like that e-bikes get more people cycling. I don’t like how some e-bikers toss caution to the wind. I am buying a radar.

Excellent video - thx for the effort! I find that even in the city when commuting with heavy traffic it is quite useful as it can distinguish up to 8 vehicles. And it is always that one last car you missed that is going to run you down. And sometimes out on country roads - especially with cars that tend to sort of sneak up on you - I tend to get less surprised/shocked from the beep than from a car passing close by which is also a safety feature of its own

Greetings from Thailand. Good video. I am comparing the different radar units available on the market. I am surprised very few people here use a bar mirror or wear bright colored cycling kit. I am continuously looking at my mirror and never leave home with out it. Great for group rides too. The radar would definitely add another layer of safety while cycling. Take care of yourself and stay safe.

Thanks so much. When I first started using radar I didn't have a mirror but it really helps! I think if I was just using a mirror and not radar I would be constantly checking for cars

Can you use a Apple Watch and get the vibration alert on the Apple Watch or do you have to use a garmin watch
    Thanks in advance

I have never used with an apple watch but I have connected to an iPhone which can then give you an audible signal via the Varia app. If you use headphones the phone will provide the audible. Very cool product

Nice summary. I am considering purchasing the Varia RTL515 unit. I use MapMyRide app to track my route and provide stats. I understand the app will not function in the background so this means I cannot use MapMyRide with the Varia app open? However I also wear a Garmin watch. Would I be able to sync the watch to the Varia unit independently of the app so I receive vibration notices a vehicle is approaching or must I have the Varia app open on my phone for the watch to vibrate. With the watch notice, I would just check my mirror to confirm. No real need to have the Varia app open if I don't need to.

Thanks. Yes that should work fine as long as the watch supports the radar. A quick check of the Garmin website will confirm. I do that when I don't use my Garmin head unit

It comes with a USB cable to charge it. Decent battery but if you are on longer rides or cold weather I bring a battery pack
