South African here - I could never understand why people have such lavish weddings. When my wife and I got married, we signed the paperwork at Home Affairs, and went camping in a forest with friends for the weekend. We sat around playing guitar around a bonfire, camped on the edge of a canyon overlooking the valley. It cost us nothing. Rather put that money towards a car, a house or a business in my opinion.
It’s not all Americans, my husband and I got married in the courthouse and then went out with only our closest friends. I agree it’s all a big “look at us and/or our money, we’re better than you”. It’s dumb
American here and I agree with you. Husband & I got married in a church but it was not a lavish wedding. I wore a dress that was more like a nice cocktail dress & him in one of his suits. Guest list was small and the reception was at our small apartment, homemade snacks & cake. Basically a fun party on a small scale. The whole thing certainly didn't cost thousands of dollars like the weddings I see posted online.

This wedding episode especially makes me so happy about how I planned my wedding. We invited 40 people for Thanksgiving Dinner. We didn't tell anyone that we were getting married so it was a surprise wedding. As everyone sat down to eat our friend who is also a Reverend told everyone he'd like to share an ancient pagan thanksgiving custom. He needed 2 volunteers. My husband and I got up and we started the wedding with no one actually getting it until we were halfway through the ceremony. It was fun and beautiful. No one had to worry about fancy clothes, gifts, endless parties, anything really.
My parents did that! I was 9, and they invited close family and friends for my little sister's christening, after she was baptized, everyone got up to leave, and the priest started the "we are gathered here today. It was such a nice quiet fun day. My husband an I also had a small ceremony 10 years ago, my parents were my inspiration.

The 7k went towards paying the surgeon lover back for the earrings she stole from his wife. That’s how they got caught. The wife visited her husband’s clinic on the same day the bride had her consultation. The wife saw the bride wearing the earrings she’d been missing, did some digging and figured it out. The surgeon confronted the bride about it and the bride said she would pay to replace them but she wasn’t expecting them to cost $7,500. My friend and I traveled across several states for a friend’s wedding the summer after we graduated from college. When we stopped for the night, we saw a familiar car. It was our newly married classmates who were both in our friend’s wedding. Their wedding was the week before. We listed out at least a half dozen other friends and classmates getting married that summer.
With the previous admission that there NEVER WAS AN ICE SWAN, I actually gasped so loud I made myself laugh. But to learn just now about the affair with the melon pedlar….. I had to take a moment. I actually had to put the iPad down and leave the room momentarily. My life is so dull I just can’t handle this much spice.
I'm thinking the ice swan lie was just a diversion. It was believable and in the brides mind would make people "shut up with the questions" Where did the 7k actually go? Bride needs to pay back her (former) friends - just out of principle now. SMH.
My college bestie and i got married 2 weeks apart, and another friend got married 3 months later. I was in all 3. None of us did all the crazy extra things that have now been pushed as the norm. No engagement parties or bachelorette trips. Just a bridal shower, rehearsal dinners, and the weddings and reception. It blows my mind how much money the people in these stories spend on extra events and parties or honestly the amount spent for just the day of.
Even so, I can't imagine going back to back on Friday and Saturday like that. Either you are going to call it a night early for the first wedding and not enjoy that as much as you might have, or you are going to be dead on your feet for the Saturday one. Yeah, party hard and all that in your 20s, but with the kind of rich food and treats everyone who isn't going to both will expect (most of my wedding budget was a limited selection of quality bottomless beverages and the best full service Italian buffet and dessert room within our elderly family's safe travel distance) it is not like going to the club two nights in a row. I planned my wedding in a month and a half because my fiance wanted to stack his pay bonuses while deployed on a ship that left going east and returned still sailing east.
That's what I would refer to as a more traditional approach, which to me is so lovely. Just imagine all the possible extra stresses you all dodged that could have seriously complicated your special day, and of course, the added expenses you didn't have to deal with. You 3 ladies did the wisest thing in my humble opinion!
@@sweeney.clan.1 possibly you could do it on a weekday or the week before, but I didn't have a rehearsal because I got married on a Sunday (yay discounts on venue, now we put that money into the food budget) but even with my "Bachelorette party" spent making bouquets with my mom and sister and all the rest the night before, I'd have been too tired to function at my wedding if I'd gone to another wedding Friday that same weekend

We planned our wedding in less than 3 months. We didnt asked for anything. Just dress suggestion that is not too formal. No planned bachelorette or anything. I think this is the best possible ever.
in my demographic 3 months is the norm. almost no parties before maybe a wedding shower but even that is pretty rare, i had one but my 3 sisters did not. no rehearsal no bridesmaids MOH nothing. we do have 7 days of partying after, in the evening though, just a meal in someone's house with a bunch of family and friends.

The update...oh man I screamed. I went to listen to the original, filled in my husband as he walked in, in the middle of the original story. My sister got married in mid-Sept and I was the MOH. Two weeks later, a cousin on my Dad's side of the family got married. A week after the cousin's wedding, a cousin on my Mom's side of the family got married. This was after I had another cousin had gotten married in May. I had known I had 3 family weddings in 4 weeks for about a year so I was budgeted for them. Then, suddenly, another cousin on my dad's side decided he was going to get married, in a very small wedding, the WEEK before my sister's wedding. Suffice it to say, I had NO money for a 4th wedding, including a stay at a hotel. I scraped together money for a wedding gift but I just couldn't attend. If they would have waited a month, I might have been able to swing it although my budget would have been completely screwed. And my cousin who sprung the last minute wedding on us (we had about a month's notice) was upset we weren't going but didn't attend my sister's or the other cousin's weddings which he knew about for months before.
My friend has four sisters. Three got married in the same year. Then they all had children in the following year. Family gatherings are gonna be a cousin palooza.

My parents got married at the court house and it was still just as special and beautiful as these lavish, expensive weddings. They didn’t need to spend thousands of dollars to have a special day that we’d remember for the rest of our lives, we still look back on that day very fondly. All that mattered to them was that they were pledging their love to one another with a few close friends and my siblings and I. ❤️
Canadian here too and I agree. We had a wedding ceremony with immediate family only and then a party at a brewery with our closest friends. No expectation of gifts and people could wear whatever they wanted. Cheap and fun and low pressure for everyone with good quality food and drinks. No bachelor/bachelorette or shower and no wedding party. For us it was the best option and we’re now able to have a big holiday because we spent very little money.

I was the MOH for two of my closest friends with weddings that were within 2 months of each other. It was HELL for me financially, emotionally, and energy-wise. And both of them were also friends with each other (but I was the only one in both wedding parties). I love them dearly and wanted to be a part of their big day and was honored that they asked me to be their MOH… but it was a LOT and took a huge toll on me. I was so tapped out after it was over that I vowed to never be in another wedding party ever again. I wish there had been more time in between the weddings because I feel like it was so overwhelming that I was unable to fully be focused on either of them… they each got a depleted version of me, and I’m very sad about that. But both weddings were wonderful and I believe both of them had a great day, and that’s all that matters at the end of the day.
5:23 It would have probably been better if the antique knife was just used in photos, like photographs of the cake by itself and in a slice of the cake (like putting it into a precut mark to make it look like it was used in photos), but use a different knife to actually cut the cake as it was probably fragile from age. Would have meant that the knife didn't have a chance to get damaged or broken.
@@Julia-uh4li See how it was an antique object, reminded me of this wedding topper my mom's cousin had on thier cake, they only used it as decoration for photos and removed it before cutting the cake because of how fragile it is. Picture a heart shaped outline made of little crystals with a small gold heart hanging in the middle, that sparkles in the light, that's what it kind of looks like. I think the metal piece where it thins out before the handle snapped, I don't think it can be welded back together. Hopefully it just came out of the handle, because then it would be fixable but it does depend where exactly it broke.

From May 1991 to November 1992, I was a bridesmaid in three weddings, one of which was my brother's. I was a guest at 10 other weddings. And for wedding number 14 in November, I was the BRIDE. Two weddings a few months apart is completely doable.
A wedding is a ceremony of commitment between 2 people. All this other stuff that the wedding party is supposed to be involved in is absolutely ridiculous!
In all honesty, from a European POV, this whole "OMG we are getting married the same year" is fucking ridiculous. There is no insanely expensive "Bachelorette" fuss here, no "destination weddings", no bloody "engagement parties" (except in some cultural minorities), and for SURE nobody would expect a gift for any of those events. There is a wedding. You have ONE maid of honour. No bazillion bridesmaids who all need to look like clones of themselves and wear hideous dresses. You give a gift (if you are a close family member, gifts usually don't exceed 250€ PER COUPLE - as a close friend, it is usually more in the 100€ range). End of story.

It’s all so crazy to me, my partner and I got married after 13 years and we literally made it happen at a court house out of state when we were on a trip for something else and would be able to bring his mom. We went on a sun set boat cruise after and had a $25 dollar cake from the grocery store… I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, small carefree and cheap! With all the most important people💚💜
Even if there is no drinking at all, a wedding day is exhausting in itself. To be a part of such a thing two days in a row? No. Way. (I had one glass of wine at our reception because there were so many people who showed up and we had to talk to all of them, which is a rule of etiquette and also, we love these people and were honored they came.)
Literally for the scam story update when you said that the procedure was free I was like “Oh was she having an affair with the surgeon?” And then it was immediately revealed that she was and I was like “I called it.” What a piece of work.
I once was a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding. I found out at the rehearsal dinner they were second cousins. And yes, in some states, it’s still legal to marry your first cousin.

My college bestie and i got married 2 weeks apart, and another friend got married 3 months later. I was in all 3. None of us did all the crazy extra things that have now been pushed as the norm. No engagement parties or bachelorette trips. Just a bridal shower, rehearsal dinners, and the weddings and reception. It blows my mind how much money the people in these stories spend on extra events and parties or honestly the amount spent for just the day of.
Even so, I can't imagine going back to back on Friday and Saturday like that. Either you are going to call it a night early for the first wedding and not enjoy that as much as you might have, or you are going to be dead on your feet for the Saturday one. Yeah, party hard and all that in your 20s, but with the kind of rich food and treats everyone who isn't going to both will expect (most of my wedding budget was a limited selection of quality bottomless beverages and the best full service Italian buffet and dessert room within our elderly family's safe travel distance) it is not like going to the club two nights in a row.
I planned my wedding in a month and a half because my fiance wanted to stack his pay bonuses while deployed on a ship that left going east and returned still sailing east.
That's what I would refer to as a more traditional approach, which to me is so lovely. Just imagine all the possible extra stresses you all dodged that could have seriously complicated your special day, and of course, the added expenses you didn't have to deal with. You 3 ladies did the wisest thing in my humble opinion!

My sister got married in mid-Sept and I was the MOH. Two weeks later, a cousin on my Dad's side of the family got married. A week after the cousin's wedding, a cousin on my Mom's side of the family got married. This was after I had another cousin had gotten married in May.
I had known I had 3 family weddings in 4 weeks for about a year so I was budgeted for them. Then, suddenly, another cousin on my dad's side decided he was going to get married, in a very small wedding, the WEEK before my sister's wedding. Suffice it to say, I had NO money for a 4th wedding, including a stay at a hotel. I scraped together money for a wedding gift but I just couldn't attend. If they would have waited a month, I might have been able to swing it although my budget would have been completely screwed.
And my cousin who sprung the last minute wedding on us (we had about a month's notice) was upset we weren't going but didn't attend my sister's or the other cousin's weddings which he knew about for months before.
My friend has four sisters. Three got married in the same year. Then they all had children in the following year. Family gatherings are gonna be a cousin palooza.

My parents got married at the court house and it was still just as special and beautiful as these lavish, expensive weddings. They didn’t need to spend thousands of dollars to have a special day that we’d remember for the rest of our lives, we still look back on that day very fondly. All that mattered to them was that they were pledging their love to one another with a few close friends and my siblings and I. ❤️

Canadian here too and I agree. We had a wedding ceremony with immediate family only and then a party at a brewery with our closest friends. No expectation of gifts and people could wear whatever they wanted. Cheap and fun and low pressure for everyone with good quality food and drinks. No bachelor/bachelorette or shower and no wedding party. For us it was the best option and we’re now able to have a big holiday because we spent very little money.

I was the MOH for two of my closest friends with weddings that were within 2 months of each other. It was HELL for me financially, emotionally, and energy-wise. And both of them were also friends with each other (but I was the only one in both wedding parties). I love them dearly and wanted to be a part of their big day and was honored that they asked me to be their MOH… but it was a LOT and took a huge toll on me. I was so tapped out after it was over that I vowed to never be in another wedding party ever again. I wish there had been more time in between the weddings because I feel like it was so overwhelming that I was unable to fully be focused on either of them… they each got a depleted version of me, and I’m very sad about that. But both weddings were wonderful and I believe both of them had a great day, and that’s all that matters at the end of the day.

5:23 It would have probably been better if the antique knife was just used in photos, like photographs of the cake by itself and in a slice of the cake (like putting it into a precut mark to make it look like it was used in photos), but use a different knife to actually cut the cake as it was probably fragile from age. Would have meant that the knife didn't have a chance to get damaged or broken.

@@Julia-uh4li See how it was an antique object, reminded me of this wedding topper my mom's cousin had on thier cake, they only used it as decoration for photos and removed it before cutting the cake because of how fragile it is. Picture a heart shaped outline made of little crystals with a small gold heart hanging in the middle, that sparkles in the light, that's what it kind of looks like. I think the metal piece where it thins out before the handle snapped, I don't think it can be welded back together. Hopefully it just came out of the handle, because then it would be fixable but it does depend where exactly it broke.

There is no insanely expensive "Bachelorette" fuss here, no "destination weddings", no bloody "engagement parties" (except in some cultural minorities), and for SURE nobody would expect a gift for any of those events. There is a wedding. You have ONE maid of honour. No bazillion bridesmaids who all need to look like clones of themselves and wear hideous dresses. You give a gift (if you are a close family member, gifts usually don't exceed 250€ PER COUPLE - as a close friend, it is usually more in the 100€ range). End of story.

It’s all so crazy to me, my partner and I got married after 13 years and we literally made it happen at a court house out of state when we were on a trip for something else and would be able to bring his mom. We went on a sun set boat cruise after and had a $25 dollar cake from the grocery store… I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, small carefree and cheap! With all the most important people💚💜
