    Great video, Hank, although I might add that in addition to supporting Big Bird, PBS also funds two Crash Course series each year. Without PBS, there would be no Crash Course Computer Science, Physics, U.S. Government, or Astronomy. -John

      So basically the entire purpose of the Trump presidency was to bring down the Green brothers and Crash Course, which would probably impact Vidcon in some negative manner and bring the world into an age of sadness and ignorance. It all makes sense now

      I mean even if you agree with his views on immigration this budget makes no sense. Taking money out of homeland security to fund military toys. Surely with those views you'd invest more in Borders and police and such, not the military.
      But from my point of view and many others all that war money should be spent on health and education.

    One problem with spending so much on the military is that your going to want to use it. I can't imagine someone investing so much money into something without getting some sort of benefit or return. What worries me is that they're cutting so much funding that supports low income families. This could drive so many young adults to seek out a military careers because of the promise of free education. The poor become foot soldiers, the wealthy stay safe and keep their kids out of harms way.

      Dear naive Americans, if you think defense budget is increased to increase power of American army you are delusional.
      Only reason you pay so much more is because of corruption on all levels of military industry (which is basically a cartel).
      It's is legalized corruption but it is undoubtedly corruption.
      Also, I hope you realize that increased military spending implies there is war coming.
      I beg you, if you were stupid enough to unleash this horror onto the world, you should at least make it civil world before Trump makes it world war.

      It's worth noting that the vast vast majority of funding for education in America is state-based. Federal funding exists partially to even out inequality between the states, and partially to pay dividends in educating or caring for young people who wouldn't otherwise have access to that.

      Trash Can sounds crazy but it is actually in their best favor to keep poor people uneducated. The less educated you are the easier you are to push propaganda on, you also have less wealth and opportunity so you can't leave. Really sad but it has been seen in many countries across history. Book burnings, not allowing certain races and sexes to get education, all that is meant to oppress people. Sorry if I sound like a conspiracy theorist, I'm really not but this is just one of those things people are too afraid to admit a lot of the time.

      Master Therion Eh, I don't mind the Education cuts so much. Education should be a state issue. Now, the federal government should still help out the poorest areas of the country, as some states do much better than others. But I don't think shrinking Education is a bad idea in theory.

      Corey Lando That is exactly what the Education Department does with that money--schools where at least 40% of the student body qualifies for free/reduced lunch receive Title I funding. This is the largest part of the Ed department's budget and is left up to individual schools to decide how to use it to best bridge the achievement gap between rich and poor students.

      Actually it doesn't cut the Pell Grant: It "Safeguards the Pell Grant program by level funding the discretionary appropriation while proposing a cancellation of $3.9 billion from unobligated carryover funding, leaving the Pell program on sound footing for the next decade." In layman's terms, it will get rid of $3.9 billion the program has been allocated but hasn't yet used, but will continue funding it's activities at current levels.

    I don't understand how the US spends so much money on medicare and medicaid but doesn't have any kind of universal health care. This isn't me being funny. I am Canadian, and I am actually really confused. I don't understand how these programs can take up such a massive part of the budget, and yet, people still pay a ton of money to get insurance. Could an American explain? :S

    • @agentrikamcgee
      @agentrikamcgee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +111

      Honestly, I don't see why America spends so much money on its military claiming that what they have isn't enough when they have so many internal problems that could be fixed while maintaining a more modest, yet still strong military. And I seriously don't know how even rabid Trump supporters are okay with him cutting spending on anti-terrorism programs to build a wall, or putting public school funds into private schools.

    • @muhreike
      @muhreike 7 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      artisticcrossbreed I had the same question. The American health system seems to be very ineffective. It seems like, in Germany where I came from and most other "developed" countries we can get way more out of the money we spent on health issues.

    • @NinaGummadi
      @NinaGummadi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Some of it stems from not being single payer (or any off shoot of that type of system). Not having one negotiating party means that the US tends to pay for more the same equipment and pharmaceuticals than other countries. Some is administrative waste of managing an overly complex system. Since Medicare and Medicaid don't run as typical insurances where healthy people pay into and don't use as much, and they have to cover expenses of arguably the most complex cases (medically and socially), it's pretty expensive.

    • @coastersplus
      @coastersplus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      A lot of medicine is unreasonably expensive here, so basically any healthcare plan is going to be expensive as a result, no matter how good of a negotiator the President fancies himself.

    • @studioLCTRL
      @studioLCTRL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Just like every other corporation, the healthcare businesses need to always make a profit. This is partly why healthcare is so expensive. Additionally, there are not enough healthy people to balance out our sick and terminally ill citizens so the price for healthcare is in a spiral of increasing prices as more and more people become uninsured because they don't need it. This is only a problem because with healthcare spending, many people do not have a choice at all when it comes to healthcare insurance.

      That has at least a little bit of logic to it, but they do very little to cause the state governments to be able to provide these services for themselves, like how much of a tax they are putting dedicated to the federal budget which means that states cannot impose their own taxes to a level enough to provide the same services. And the right does an extremely poor job with making the state governments work in their own rights, like how much they oppose proportional representation (which doesn't have to be party based, STV is an effective no party yet proportional system) and the referendum.

      First and foremost you have to remember Trump is a business man. Jumping off from that the 2 most important things in business are how much monetary value something can bring back to you and how well protected those assets are. Trumps budget removes what could be argued as money drains with no real potential to make any significant portion back. So the main argument comes down to this: Should it be the governments job, and by extension should your tax dollars go towards, to pay for certain things, or should it be funded by the people themselves. Trump believes that its not the governments job, evidence in the budget. The long and short of my own argument is, why are we the people relying on the government to do all of this for us.
      With the rise of crowdfunding sites it is easier than ever to start movements like cheaper or even entirely free private schooling, removing the necessity of government funded schooling. This same principle can be applied to research, healthcare, etc. In fact there is at least one organization I know of that was made during Obama's presidency that was at its core a group of people helping others pay for medical attention because they were against the Medicare idea.

      The US can win every conventional conflict with every potential adversary right now. But the US isn't well positioned to deal with hybrid threats, from cyberwarfare to proxy wars, like in Syria or Ukraine. A big part of dealing with these things is diplomacy rather than outright force, and right now State Department is getting cuts, Trump is antagonizing our allies, and weakening defences against Russian propaganda by calling everything fake news.

    • @Kenny3stacks
      @Kenny3stacks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Christopher V But even that will turn into a negative. By increasing the number of military personnel, you are setting the VA up for a Major downfall by them trying to keep up with said increase

    • @Artemis750
      @Artemis750 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Kenny3stacks Correct. The increase to VA funding is not only not as much as how much is already needed, considering where all of that military budget increase is likely going to go (defense contractors, arms companies, being able to hire more servicemen (but not really entirely being able to "afford" them so to speak with an ineffective support system (underfunded VA) (among other things that have to make way for the priority in the Trump administration to give $$$ to defense contractors) so it's just enough to hire them at a salary without fully funded benefits), etc.), Trump's VA affairs increases are nowhere near enough to keep up with his sought-out expansion of the military.
      Basically, Trump inserted extra scraps into the defense budget to make his supporters think he's doing something and "fighting for the military" and this'll probably be what'll be used in talking points ("HE'S HELPING THE VETERANS WHY CAN'T YOU SUPPORT THEM LIBERALS HATE THE MILITARY") by Republicans and Trump-aligned pundits for some time to come.
      That is to say, the VA expansion isn't backed with an intention to necessarily aid veterans (nor is it actually an effective expansion should that be your goal, especially keeping his expansion of the military and potentially wars he'll seek in mind); Trump is just handing out scraps to make people think he's doing something about the problems in America while ruining everything else with regards to our budget and country.
      EDIT: "The increase to VA funding is not only not* as much as how much is already needed". Accidentally missed an extra not there.

      You're under the mistaken idea that children get properly educated in public schools. The evidence doesn't bear that conclusion. The department of Education is more interested in getting kids to pass their standardized tests than they are actually teaching them. Humans aren't machines that you can program answers into, you need to teach kids to *think*. And often that means you may not be able to measure their success on a standardized test.
      The education establishment is more interested in patting themselves on the back and looking out for themselves than they are about teaching kids. That's not to say there's not plenty of excellent teachers out there. But they're part of a corrupt and self-interested system that they have no say in. The teacher's unions are the worst example of the corruption at play in the US education system. They look out for themselves first and foremost. Where is the student's union? Who's fighting for students?

    Even as a non-American, this budget proposal is absolutely terrifying! America is known for being not-very-responsible when it comes to the environment, and a 30% decrease will only escalate that issue. America's education system is already the worst among developed countries, so I can't even imagine how much poverty will be perpetuated under the new budget. And basically eliminating ALL culture funding entirely with just a swipe of the hand is ridiculous, all to be reallocated to fighting wars and rebel groups that the United States is responsible for creating in the first place. If you tried proposing this budget in any other western country, there would not even be a debate, they would veto it instantly. The fact that this is even a possibility for America reveals a lot about the apathy American politicians have toward the well-being of their citizens.

    The American Healthcare Act and the new budget is terrible. We already have one of the largest militaries on the planet. The Defense budget should be reduced by a more than reasonable 8-12 blocks. America does not need to be the world's police. We should be focusing on increasing scientific research, climate research, public aid for the poor, and funding for education as to reduce the cost of college. By reducing college debt, American workers will have more to contribute to for taxes and sooner lower the national debt with China.

    • @finitewehosh6542
      @finitewehosh6542 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually our military budget actually isn't that big given the size of our GDP. In short, we have a GDP of 13 trillion (ish) and the military budget is 640 billion (ish). Which is half of one trillion. So half of one thirteenth of our budget. I don't like converting fractions into percentages so have fun with that.

    • @Jayhbentley
      @Jayhbentley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The ratio of military spending to GDP doesn't seem relevant to me. If we doubled our GDP, would it make sense to double military spending? I don't think so. Instead, our military budget needs to be just large enough to accomplish our national security objectives. Some of our Generals actually believe that things like foreign aid, achieving energy independence, and combating climate change would do more for national security than building more tanks, jets, and ships that have extremely low chances of ever being used in combat.

    • @finitewehosh6542
      @finitewehosh6542 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Bentley Once again, the military budget isn't unreasonable. Especially when you realize that we have to make up for a lot of NATO members and allies not meeting their military standards. And plus, how much is a soldiers life worth? I agree in increasing energy independence and providing foreign aid, but freedom isn't free and we need to ensure we have a well maintained military to protect our freedom.

      Finite Wehosh Okay, I see your. I just wanted to voice my opinion a friendly manner. You clearly have a greater understanding of the situation. Now as thanks for helping to educate I heavily encourage you to contact your local representative. Your opinion would be highly valued and could make its way into the larger discussion. This may go as far to influence the serious debate occuring in Congress. Personally, I believe that education, healthcare, support for the elderly and disabled, coming from a background that depends on that funding, is highly effective in improving the lives of Americans and giving hope to those who wish to actually improve themselves. Understand that I am aware of fraud in these fields and it is a serious issue that needs to be further assessed. I'm not saying you're wrong, but that government is complicated and we should move towards for acting as a cohesive unit with our own separate sections in which we have different life styles. Yes defense funding is important, but so is eliminating a poverty struggle through education and inspiring others to improve their livelihoods. There is a more looming threat of super bugs and climate change which can and may destroy us all. Thanks for contributing to the conversation and helping a nerd fighter open up their eyes to another perspective. Stay Awesome and know your opinion is valued.

      This is just the proposed budget. Congress has to pass it for it to go into law. I don't see them doing that with how much backlash this budget has received, but it does show where Trump is leaning and what he wants. He tipped his hand, so to speak.

    • @kirstynquinn6602

      Cactus 'N Gaming Congress won't like the bill- Democrats ( the left leaning party) won't like the cuts to the safety net programs while Republicans ( the right leaning party) won't like the cuts to the state department and due to the fact that Trump (and them) want to cut taxes they won't like it because there is no drop in spending to offset the loss of revenue, which will drive up the deficit.

This budget is counterintuitive and our middle class will vanish. Tax cuts for the rich will mean the poor will carry all the weight. Yeah lol imagine America completely poverty stricken and a bunch of poor and sick getting poorer and sicker holding it up.

      Allow me to put this ways; as a Christian I stand by a noble passage: *"For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”* 2 Thessalonians 3:10
      Now, as to not offend anyone with my personal beliefs, let's go to good ol' Darwinism: *"the strong survive and the weak perish"*
      _"It's about these rich greedy idiots continue to put people in these desperate situations to live and then call them takers, criminals, and losers."_
      Majority of the time, people do it to themselves, statistically speaking. You cannot help those who will simply not help themselves.
      As for the rich profiting from this; people are willing to pay them and if you think it wrong that people are willing to pay, you should not be blaming the rich but the enablers.
      _"It's disgusting. You're disgusting."_
      Laughable to be sure; I am just going along with human nature. You can accept it or not, but someday reality must hit.

    So basically lets cut a lot of money from services and agencies we actually need and give all that money to the military, an organization that even agrees that they are overfunded, also were going to drastically cut taxes while not decreasing the budget in anyway.
    And this will somehow repair the American economy. Makes perfect sense to me.
    Also most of those tax breaks are only for the top 10% weathliest Americans while everyone else will have to pay more taxes and to access basic human needs and services. Assuming that there are even agencies to support those services.
    You know what. Good luck getting this past Congress.

    Might be a stupid question, but why do we need to spend so much money on defense? If I read the blocks correctly, we have a budget of 520 trillion dollars on defense.

    • @Meloncov
      @Meloncov 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      520 billlion, not trillion. Give or take a bit, depending on whether you count stuff like the VA as "defense spending".

      Brian Cheng the defense budget has become self-perpetuating.

      Every American loves 'supporting the military' and politicians eat that crap up. So every bill here and there will usually increase military spending in some way in order for it to pass through congress or else you have arguments like "you're not an American if you don't support the troops". To be honest though, the military has too much money to even know where to put any use to it and just keep making what it doesn't need.

    • @jesusgonzalez6715

      Brian Cheng
      Alright here's why. It's because war is a business here in America. Tens of thousands of jobs depends on these "defense" manufacturing job. Most countries use their military cash to build what they need, and nothing more. Here in America, we do that, and then we overproduce to keep jobs going.
      So for example. Let's say we need 500 tanks for the year. Great! That'll take our factories and engineers 8 months to produce it. 8 months go bye, but there are still 4 months left in the year. So what do we do to keep the workers occupied so they can maintain their job for the rest of the year? We keep building more tanks! And what do we do with the extra tanks? We sell them for cash to backwards countries like Saudi Arabia who use the weaponry for terrible, human rights violating purposes.
      The solution would be to slowly cut military spending until it goes down to around $250 billion, and during this time we help workers find new jobs that are outside of temporary defense manufacturing jobs so tens of thousands don't lose jobs in an instant from cutting the budget.
      But we are America, and as long as we have the Congress we have now (and president), nothing will change, it will just get worse.

      The out of wedlock birth rate for the black community has fallen by about half in the past 30 years (it was 97.5 per 1000 in 1969, today it's 58 per 1000). I'd hardly term that "out of control". Since 2008, there's been a total decline for single mothers of any race of 14%, except for white women over 35 with a college degree which had a slight increase (which may be due to changing demographics). In addition, in 58% of out-of-wedlock births, the couples live together long-term, just unmarried.

    • @MalrexMontresor
      @MalrexMontresor 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +OwenIII Another way of looking at it, is that cutting education and poverty programs hurts the military long-term. War in the modern era is high-tech, we need educated soldiers not grunts. The days of the high school drop out infantry man is over, the military won't even take you without a GED (less than 1% of troops today have no GED or diploma). Cutting education means that our military will not have enough educated or intelligent soldiers to man the weapons of the future (or requires the military to spend more to train them on basics). Not all, but about 20% of our troops come from low-income families, and cutting poverty programs (especially school lunches) can mean a childhood of undernourishment, leading to an adult that is smaller in size and fundamentally weaker. This harms future recruitment efforts and overall makes the entire country weaker in the future. So in order to build a strong military in the future, we need to spend more on education and poverty reduction today.

      I think you've got more of a chance of seeing pigs fly then seeing this enacted. The way things work here is that Congress puts through the budget... the President can "suggest" a budget... but that's about it and Congress can choose to outright ignore it.
      Regardless, if something like this goes through and the Republicans don't make any progress on their campaign promises, the Democrats will have an absolutely massive opening to retake Congress in 2 years... and if they do that and win big in the States, Trump's Presidency would be effectively over.
