  • Anne Swanson used to fear phone interactions due to Intrusive Thought Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. She would fear she had said something atrocious, even though she hadn't. However, through exposure response therapy, Anne has learned to manage her anxiety and embrace leaving voicemail messages.
    No pets were harmed in the making of this TEDx Talk
    Anne Swanson’s mission in life is to connect good people with each other. Professionally, she does this by working as a college recruiter at a technology company. She also serves as their Lafayette corporate social responsibility chair. In 2015, she won a prestigious “Bridge Builder” award for helping engage her company’s members in civic causes. Anne is a member of the705, where she is a participant of their I-49 Task Force as well as their mentor program. She is a graduate of Leadership Lafayette Class XXII. For the past year, she has served as the Leadership Institute of Acadiana’s communication’s chair. In 2001, she earned her public relations degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In her personal time, she loves trying to figure out the meaning of life with her husband Rick, spending quality time with her family and friends, and playing with her two dogs - Summer and Flash.

      First off, NO ocd is funny. All forms are connected to suffering, however, trying to laugh and enjoy life as best you can despite that is a sign of great strengty. Furthermore, I can't think of any form of ocd that you couldn't talk about these days. You might not be able to have some fun talks about you fantasizing about maming your entire family in their sleep, but you can still make people undersrand the mechanisms behind the thoughts.

    Also, exposure therapy is great, but putting a germaphobe's hand in the loo is not really what exposure therapy is. You start by doing gentle, baby steps. Wash hands one less time an hour, wash the dishes a few less times ect. I just wanted to make sure no one watched this with OCD or a friend with OCD and try and throw yourself into a situation that's too much for you as it will do more harm than good. Flooding and exposure are different :)
    Amazing talk though and such a wonderful personality on stage.

    I first developed OCD when I was a 16-year-old boy, during a severe strep throat infection and month-long quarantine with Mono. I remember going back to school a completely different person. I was terrified, could barely function. It affected my schoolwork, relationships with my classmates, SAT scores...everything.
    In my early 30's I began drinking heavily. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was using alcohol to treat my anxiety and the OCD. At 49 I entered rehab and--33 days later--emerged sober. I'm 67 now and I've been sober going on 18 years.
    During the past 50 years, my OCD has morphed from predominantly 'compulsive' to almost 'pure-O'. Fluvoxamine has helped with the compulsions. The obsessions and ruminations are tougher to treat though.
    Personally I didn't find therapy to be helpful, but I DO believe that a multifaceted approach is best.
    Use everything you can get your hands on to treat it or this beast will rob you of your life. Peace.

    but what about when your biggest fear already happened, like losing a parent and you have obsessive thoughts about the loss? I've been dealing with death phobia since 1st grade. I am now 39. lost my dad unexpectedly in October and am losing my grip. I am panic stricken about next losing my mom. I am fixated on losses I might endure. So much so, I'm not living.

      I have been there too. I've battled these thoughts and fears since I was in 2nd grade. I felt that if I did not do something a certain amount of times, that someone in my family would die. I also lost my dad unexpectedly (through causes that we not natural), and it has been my faith in Jesus that has saved me! Before I was saved, I was scared to ever move out of the house with my mom, and REALLY scared to EVER move away. Because of my faith, not only was I able to move out, I was able to accept a position away from my city, and I lived away for over 5 years! I NEVER thought that this was possible, considering that I lived with this fear for almost 20 years! God has given me more peace than I could ever have imagined back then. I am SO thankful!

    Intrusive thoughts are scary particularly when the thought is unwanted about God. It's like exposure therapy or just letting the thought pass is harder because a person in that situation doesn't want to disobey God, or offend Him. Praying is hard. I just hope that He understands.

      @coreyanderson1457:
      That's what OCD does, it finds what matters most to you and uses it against you.
      I'm atheist, I have no problem with blasphemy, so OCD has no hold on me in that regard.
      Maybe it helps you to see it like this:
      OCD chose blasphemy as my theme and that means, that I love god very much, if that wasn't true, OCD would have chosen another theme.

Expressing thoughts like this out loud will be difficult and not so humorous at all, OCD is a serious thing and some things are too distressing and embarrassing to publicly talk about

    Really bugs me when people go 'im so OCD' 'thats so OCD' and use it in a joke way to describe stuff that is nothing like actual OCD. OCD has completely torn apart and destroyed large portions of my life, its not a joke or fun and the way the word is incorrectly used in a joke way the whole time makes people with it like me feel like no one understands what actual OCD is like

      Well you're not.
      I actually feel I have gone crazy myslef with my own OCD.
      There's no way I could not feel how I do and act out the compulsions..
      However I hate it and it is life-ruining completely.
      I wish people knew more about it and didn't joke about this awful horrible condition we have.

    Was is a memory disorder and low self esteem or self negative view (judgement) ?
    ....and how did it ever "creep" into Psyche ? (Soul) !!

    • @annanavenicka9688
      @annanavenicka9688 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me it is piling of stress and anxiety through my school years, and that can ''disorder'' brain making it go into overdrive, which leads to chemical imbalances and your brain suddenly can't filter what thought is in actual need of panic and attention.
      Prolonged time in loneliness and lack of serotonin can also cause it. However, in my opinion, low-self esteem mostly comes after the intrusive thoughts, because you start to convince yourself that since you have these thoughts, you are a worthless person and BAM the insecurities kick in and cycle gets stronger.

    The TV show Monk makes fun of OCD and there is too much light-heartedness and fun in this TEDTalk, too, at least for me.
    OCD is debilitating and ERP does not work for everyone.

      Yes it can be linked to ocd. The skin picking can be a compulsion. It's called (dermatillomania)

    I am horrified at hearing what she thinks is "funny". First you have a thought. If you don't control or switch your thought process, you speak what you're thinking. Once it's spoken, you are only one step away from acting on it. Lori Daybell, the "mother" who is linked to the deaths of her 2 children, sister, brother, and husbands, had a brother who did stand up comedy and this woman, sounds just like him. He is now dead, but he did kill Lori's EX for her. It's believed that Lori killed him to silence him. I would NEVER, EVER, let someone like this woman near me, my family, or my pet. EVER.

      With all due respect, the whole problem is that the person who suffers from ocd cannot stop the thought. they want to, and they try to, but the more they try to get rid of it, the harder it sticks.

    • @samsmom400
      @samsmom400 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@serene3175 I understand that. But if she can't stop the thought, she will very likely follow through with the action. If those are the thoughts that she's having and unable to control, she's even more likely to follow through and do an action she says she can't control.

      @@samsmom400 The thoughts don’t stem from desire, they stem from anxiety. Notice how the thought is “what if i did this” rather than “i want to do this”. Since she has trauma from saying something inappropriate, she is afraid that she will say something inappropriate again. In a person without ocd, they will move on from the thought, but when a person does have ocd, the thought sticks because of their fear and previous trauma. The brain is trying to protect this person from doing something that they don’t want to do. Almost all people with intrusive thoughts don’t act on them or even agree with them, because the thoughts are something that threatens their character and their ideals.
