    I once saw this most beautiful woman and told her she's missing her wedding ring and she told me no, it's on her other hand because she's a violin player. I then said, "You look familiar. Didn't I see you play Handel's Water Music with the local orchestra a few years back?" Yes, that was her! What a pleasant encounter that was.

    I am from the 18th century, you lot are so so lucky. I only heard this once, with difficulty, from the banks of the River Thames, and only a bit as the barges went by. Noticed a guy sitting on them under a canopy with an enormous wig. Have to look that one up, but hey you can listen to this over and over again.

      I both envy and pity you, sir. You must have seen so much, including the slow, but steady decline in what we call music. Tell me, if you can, at one point do you think that music, as you define it, ceased to be composed?

      Beautifully put, Helena. You might try the Concertgebouw's 1958 recording (conducted by E. van Beimum) which maybe has less 'sparkle' or 'exuberance' than what the Consort does here; but, to my ears, the earlier recording more than makes up for that in its grace and tenderness.

    Handel's water music ranks up with at least the five greatest pieces of Baroque chamber music ever composed. Such a world of order, sophistication, tranquility, and exquisite beauty, I cannot help but keep on playing it over and over again as I study Calculus II. It turns the most difficult problems into the zenith of excitement and enjoyment!

      I listened to this for the first time in the audience right on the Charles river on the 250th anniversary. I was 7. July 17 1967. Everyone else my age was listening to the Beatles. I believe Fiedler was the conductor though I was rather young so I can't be certain. My uncle had a boat so we pulled up along side the bank right there and listened to the entire concert from his boat, the only proper way to listen to this :)

    Händel is one of the greatest Composers in history. On the Olymp with J. S. Bach, CPE Bach, G. Ph. Telemann, L. van Beethoven, W. A. Mozart, F. Schubert, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, J. Brahms,
    P. Tschaikovsky, R. Schumann, J. Strauß II, A. Vivaldi, R. Wagner, C. Monteverdi and J. Haydn.

      The Greatest Composers in history are famous for their classical masterpieces either in opera or instrumental (symphonic) music or both. From a larger list are missing a lot of names, like N. Paganini, G. Verdi at least, and G. Mahler, D. Scarlatti, G. Rossini, G. Donizetti, H. Berlioz, F. Liszt, J. Offenbach, C. Saint-Saëns, G. Bizet, G. Puccini, C. Debussy, J. Sibelius, M. Ravel, B. Bartok, S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, S. Rachmaninoff, E. Grieg, L. Delibes, C. Gounot etc.
      There are a lot of lists like best 10, best 20, many of them subjective. L. van Beethoven is simply the best.

      @johng423 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In answer to your first question, I can offer a possibility. Many composers back then were not above borrowing music or reworking their own, and it is well known that Handel did that a lot. (So did Bach and Mozart, to name two others.) I don't know the circumstances that prompted the writing of each suite or the order in which the movements were composed, but I did notice that of the movements you mentioned, you are correct that they are the same except one is in D major and the other is in G major, with some re-orchestration. Maybe Handel was in a hurry and/or it was simply most convenient to re-use a good tune.
      I don't have an answer to your second question. I assume substituting an M for a W is either a typo or a result of dyslexia.

    When most of the world was either still living like they had for thousands of years or under such strict religious servitude that music was almost non-existent this innovative music pioneer composed one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever, musically so far advanced over the drums and chanting elsewhere that music advanced light-years. Between Handel, Vivaldi and Bach the late Baroque period was a watershed for music. Mozart, Beethoven and all who followed owe their creative genius to these great Europeans. THE BIG BANG :2Pe 3:3 ¶ Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
    2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
    2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

      That's horribly sadistic and utterly nonsensical. It reads like the ravings of a a deluded maniac. Either that, or it's simply a typical passage from the bible.
