Just checked my F91. Guess what: A Fake! After pressing all three buttons it stopped working properly. (No stopwatch anymore etc.) It also showed a number of other red flags you mentioned AND I got it from ebay. Case closed.
Fortunately my friend you didn’t spend too much money but think how many times this has been done!!!!
Same here!
Same here
@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR where can I get that tshirt
Sorry for your loss
Good thing I watched this. I almost bought a “genuine” G-Shock 5000u on eBay. I thought the lower price was suspect. Thanks MWC
Never saw a fake GW-5000U before, and I’ve spotted quite a lot of fake G’s.
Are you sure?
Great video! 👌 It's a shame that the fakes are able to copy the "cASIO" text! Like you, I tend to trust Amazon over eBay. It's sad to see the newer F-91W's got rid of the little "u" symbol, too!
A point about E-Bay! A few years ago I bought a "brand new in box" G-Shock mudmaster of Ebay. The moment I took the box out of the packing something did not feel right, The bar code on the box was not he same style as all my other G-Shock boxes. When I got to the watch , again something did not look quite right, as look would have it I found a you tube video on "how to spot a fake g-shock" that used the exact watch I had. a quick watch, and yes my watch was a fake! I contacted the seller, he appologised and said send it back, he refunded my money and the postage. When I raised the issue with EBay their attitude was as all the cash was refunded the sale never happened!!! No surpise that non of this sellers sales were taken down!
Morel of this tale is be be very careful buying watches of ebay!
Really interesting show MWC. I’d never really paid much attention to the world of fake Casios so it was enlightening to have a deep dive on what to look out for. A good lesson that in watches (and life in general really) if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is!
I have a real F-91W, and a "genuine" one from that seller. If you press all the buttons for the LCD test, the real one has a dot before the date display, the fake doesn't. Also on the buckle, the real Casio has the letters spaced out, whereas the fake has the normal-looking Casio logo. I do use the fake one from time to time (no pun intended) as it's gonna get bashed a bit for work anyway. I did notice the timekeeping isn't very good, and I keep making adjustments vs. the real one. The only thing the fake one does better is the backlight is slightly brighter. One thing that's interesting is your fake is apparently "Made in Japan" whereas mine is "Made in Malaysia".
Great video Russ. Pleased to shown all the detail. It surprised me and I’ve had a few of these! Sound is just done by the piezo speaker inside the caseback so it’s easy to replicate.
It’s so obvious when side by side but on its own not so easy.
Superb bit of education here mate well done.
My F-91W turns out to be fake. Everything checked out as a legit one, until you talked about the brushing on the backplate and the battery, mine has vertical corse brushing and a non-branded battery. 😩 R.I.P.
So I did some research and not all genuine f91-w's are horizontal. Mine is legit and it has vertical coarse brushing. A friend of mine bought an f91-w from an actual casio store and it has vertical brushing. As for the battery, that may mean it is a fake, which I am sorry to hear that. At least they aren't expensive! Have a great day!
I have two f-91s that belong to my wife and daughter. Both are legit and have vertical brushing. I'm guessing the direction of the brushing can vary. Theirs are pink and baby blue if that matters to anyone.
No way man! You got me! The little “u” sign got me! Oh gosh, these fakes are really good, I honestly hardly tell the difference, and its not “one is better one is worse”, they are look the same but different slightly. And talking about the “u” sighn, it always was a marker, fakes tend to lack this. Now its reverse. I think casio change look a little bit time to time without actually telling the audience about it. I actually didnt know about f-91s dont have it now. Wow. I dont have one in my collection so far, I used to rock a f-105 which is fully legit and 7 years old now. I was thinking to get couple of 91s in my collection, the classic blue one and a one with a gold accent, but I think I should double check my retailer before now. Best wishes! Thanks a lot this was really useful!!!
Toppest facts on the forged one. Brilliant mate!👍
The Thailand produced casios have had vertical brushing on their case backs. Still fine brushing, but vertical.
There is another way to tell. I bought my Casio Digital from Amazon on 24th May this year (A168WA). I set the time/date on the 25th May. It is currently 4 seconds slow according to the World Clock on my iPad that I use as the reference. It has been up to 8 seconds fast and down to 7 seconds slow over the last few months. Would a ‘knock-off’ be that accurate?
I collect Casio Frogmans? Frogmen? Anyway, I love the Frog & have 10 in my collection.
I was in a band with a dude that collected FAKE Frogs & did it willingly!
Different strokes, I guess...
(Although he was a drummer, so...)
I want a fake Frogman so I can try out the look and feel before buying a real one. I can't even find a fake one, though.
I guess he gets really angry if he accidentally buys a genuine one. 😆
Thanks for taking the time to make such a great video. I don't own a F91W and i don't plan on buying one but this shows that everything can and will be faked, so keep your eyes wide open!
Btw.: just checked on german eBay and these watches are 20-ish Euros! One was offered for 14,- so plenty of "room" for counterfeiters to sell their "product".
@mwc I have two F91W's purchased in Japan, both Genuine (one new, boxed, from a reputable seller) and the brushing on the caseback on both is vertical. The quality of the brushing and the text is very high quality.
It’s amazing something so cheap is being copied. The good news is it only costs £10.99 to put right.
Can you do a video on fake DW5600?
Do some research and you’ll figure it out.
I always look forward to the Mrs. Mad Watch Collector part of the video. Have you considered doing a video to introduce her?
Great stuff mwc your the man❤
The best way to know? Buy direct from Casio. :) That's what I do, MWC!
Great vid, Love to see you walk through a few more brands Bolex, no time to buy, omega's and frankenwatches. One hour special should do it, not too much extra work for ya. 😅
I believe most fakes also have regular Phillips type cross head screws on the back, while the genuine ones have screws that combine the Phillips cross head with one full slot all the way to the edge of the screw (for a regular flat screwdriver). Although the fake in your video seems to have the same type of screws as the genuine one, which makes it even harder to spot a fake one.
Also, if you have an old F-91 that doesn't show CASIo when you hold the right button, don't automatically assume it's fake, because it might be a genuine very early one. Casio didn't implement that function until the fake ones began to show up on the market.
*Now you got me thinking that my SKMEI is a fake one*
Also the real ones have some water resistant, the fakes just leak
Would’ve been a good test!
This is so nuts. I literally bought 3 fake ones the other day. Assuming they wouldn't be fakes. The viewing angle was the give away for me. Also the buckle snapped within a week. I feel like a fool but you live and you learn. One thing I will say about the fake one is the backlight is slightly better 😂 my one was 'made in Malaysia'
“It looks like the caseback was finished by Stevie Wonder” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol that got me too 😂😂😂
My favorite thing is these guys in Facebook groups that claim "no one would fake a casio" , lol. Those people are the target audience for the guys selling fakes, sucker born every minute.
No one fakes casios
Love this, great video. Thankfully, my F-91 W is legit.
How did you post a reply a day ago when the video was uploaded an hour ago?
Different time zone.

Does the CASIo name show in every model when you press and hold bottom right button, or only in F91w? My F91w is genuine judging by your tips, but another Casio I have, model number MWD 100H doesnt show CASIo when i press the bottom right button, and has vertical grooves on the back cover.
But is this just for the F91 W or any Casio? I saw a Different video about this a while ago and they also mentioned the screws that hold the back on weren't the same, the real Casio screws had one indent completely across while the fake ones didn't and they were both the same length.... if that makes any sense. Oh and I haven't got a F91 W yet but I'm pretty sure that if or when I get one I think I'll get it from Argos as it's a sure way to get a real one.
Ive got a dodgy biege one, buttons and strap just feel different and the alarm and hour signal icons are the wrong way round. From amazon
can't even buy a budget watch these days
They are really hard to tell apart, especially if you only have a fake with no way to compare. It's really annoying. The best method seems to be buying from large, trusted suppliers who don't benefit from such a vulgar scam.
By the way, I wonder how this fake crap gets to Western markets. It really does have to be large quantities to be profitable. So we're probably talking about organized smuggling. Customs should look into this.
This video also makes me wonder about all the NH-35 movements for sale on AliExpress. Very few of those ads care to mention "Seiko" "TMI" or "SII". Seems suspicious. And that makes me wonder about all the Chinese watches that boast NH-35 movements.
Very informative. Thanks! 👍🏽
Great video very informative👍👌
This video gonna help the fake manufacturer to upgrade his quality & changes he need to do 😂😂
Can’t win then chief can we!
Why? Would they be unable to buy the genuine article and check for themselves? Do they not believe anything until they've viewed it on social media?
Great video, thanks.
I own a couple of G-Shocks but no F-91W (thick wrist). Do any of these tests work the same on other non-F-91W Casios?
Just to throw the cat among the pigeons, I bought a Casio A168 from Argos (a reputable high street store that has been selling Casio watches for at least the last 40 years) probably over 10 years ago now and it doesn't display 'CASIO' when pushing and holding the bottom right button. Everything else checks out as genuine, even down to the circuit board, so I don't think you can rely on the lack of the 'CASIO' display solely as an indication of a fake, unless Argos were selling extremely good fakes back then 🤔
Very cool! Love my discontinued F-28W!
My new F91 (the minimalist one with the white text) has verticle brush marks on the stainless steel backing but looks like a real one in every other way. Bought it from a well-known high street supplier.
great video 😀
Great video. Thanks.
I'm not sure that vertical caseback brushing is a definite sign of a fake. I've read that Casio factories may brush casebacks in either direction. However, larger caseback screws are definitely a telltale sign of a fake. I've got several F91's with vertical brushing that appear to be genuine in every way but I haven't opened them to inspect the module. Please let me know ... What do you guys think about the direction of the caseback brushing as a reliable way to spot a fake?
My friend your perm could earn you a pass into the punch perm club ahahah
There are better perm clubs out there than that one!
Can’t you make the display read “cASIO” by pressing a certain button combination?
Do the fakes do this too?
I have both fake and og f91 and if we look side to side we can find differences otherwise its difficult .Both show casio when pressing all the buttons both have vertical brushing but og have smooth lines and og also have serial number on backside and LED backlight of fake is pretty good lights the whole display
From Argos a legit f-91ws-2ef with vertical brushed case back Thailand.
Just realised my eBay f-91w is a fake, vertical brushed case back Malaysia, difference was subtle.
Off topic for a second, I just wanted to know if you are familiar with the "North Edge " brand of watches and what you think of them.
Argos - Uk- job done 😊
Thanks for this video!
It all depends were did ou buy it only official stores pls.
fake manufacturers: hmm ok right go on _* taking notes *_
I lost it at 9:32 😂
Two weeks ago I bought one off eBay. Yep a fake! I actually used a magnifying glass to read the print on the case. Overrun print & bad printing generally. I made it known to eBay & said seller & got a full refund.
Thanks for the video, I was going to buy one the other day off eBay and I’m glad that I didn’t now.
Thanks for this information!
It's mind boggling that not only are they counterfeiting the cheapest brand name watches made, they're going to the trouble to incorporate improvements to the fake ones-not to make them better, just more deceptive.
Many thanks for giving us this information.
Sadly my one is an Ebay Fake, l will also contact Ebay.
I will not have a fake watch in my collection so i plan on customizing it with the help of a large hammer 😮.
I bought an f91 that turned out to be fake. It doesn't even say Casio on it! Strap is awful as well.
i had the opportunity to compare a fake king gshock 56bb and its scary. the only difference was the screen on the fake was plastic and the ori was glass. other than that it looked and felt the same.
This is a great video, but if it’s anything like the videos that HMT collectors put out showing how to spot a fake this will only give the fake producers a list of things to improve in their next run
Crazy. How much money can they be making counterfeiting a $20 watch?
Top work geezer
Genuinely scary!
HEAVY edit here, as I am replacing the tongue in cheek joke with a hard reality check.
eBay was always a gamble when I first tried it over 20 years ago, but now it has been totally overrun by crooks.
However, the worst of baddies are not the Chinese dealers, but the flag waving proud "Americans" with their "proudly made in USA", over-priced cheap knock-offs from good Chinese manufacturing, and this is NO joke!
I have seen people claiming very cruddy turntable parts as their own invention, when the actual Chinese branded parts are far better!
Always a heavy edit! This is what has made this channel what it is my friend!
I have a real one, but my case back has vertical brushing with the correct etching.
Moral of the story - if it looks too good to be true it probably isn't true. Especially on Fleabay.
Excellent video. 💪🏻There are 80s F91 made in Japan but those are very rare. And prices are high. You can spot them with small "Japan U" on the right corner 💪🏻
I Had a fake g shock mudmaster sold to me by John Lewis a few years ago. i could tell as the crown didnt do anything when pulled / screwed out and the glass sounded different when tapped. contacted John Lewis to return it and they didnt believe me that it was a fake and eventually asked me to return it for a refund.
and to add it said made in Thailand on the case back. and that particular model has the housed in Japan
Wait, so vertical brush means it's fake for sure? I got a w86 with vertical brushing but it doesn't look bad
Nop vertical brush alone doesn't make it fake
❤ Godzilla quip 😂😂
Can't wait to change my battery
Hoping for Panasonic. Thank you for the telltale signs.
For me the size also looks slightly different. The real one seems a tad rectangular and the fake looks more square.
The viewing angle may apply to the F91, unfortunately there are many original Casios that have wonky displays.
Yup I got a fake a168 on ebay. Not happy and when I contacted seller they gave me 50% money back. So they know what they r doing and still make a profit from 50% off! You can tell its fake when you have real one side by side with sizing, text alignment, qc etc... but as a standalone they fake it well. If the price is too good to be true then it probably is... better to buy from reputable places. Plenty bargains from legit sellers.
I’ve got one more!!!! Under the clasp you will see made in Korea in a real one…. well mine has it but mine is really old too BUT the fake one I found has nothing there
I’m surprised people get caught out buying fake F91w’s. Like you say a genuine one is £9.99 so why not just purchase one from a recognised seller in the high street or online from Amazon? If you buy one from an auction site to save £2 then you shouldn’t really be surprised it’s a fake.
Sadly in this modern era there seems to be more fakes of everything and anything.
That happened to me, I couldn't believe, a so cheap watch and I got a fake one lol. Got my money back and bought at Amazon, finally got the original, great video.
This needs to be seen by most people on r/casio.
For what is a budget product and a predominantly functional one...this actually makes me quite upset! Thanks for giving us consumers some tools to help navigate the online buying cesspool!
The people making these fakes also watch these videos and adjust their methods.
Just got one at a farmacy out of all places and it has made in Thailand
Seems it's genuine
Theyre cheapest from argos, and most likely to be geniune too
The battery definitely a telltale sign your casio is fake or not.every casio that i own always use panasonic battery...
Xerox operator: TAKE NOTES !!!
Great video! I was actually wearing my F-91W while I watched this video so I was checking the signs at the same time ^^. I have a real one! yay! Is it as easy to tell if a G-Shock is real?
Depends on the model.
CasiOak fakes are very common.
I bought a John candy a159 from eBay . Fake . Arrived absolutely used in the sense like it had been wedged between two pillows (there not pillows ) . Screen scratched , battery died after two weeks. Seller refunded me the money . I ended up porting in a genuine f91w module that wasn’t being used as the strap on the genuine f91w had snapped ages ago . Talk about a mad Franken watch . Anyway eBay is littered with fakes
Respect to the fakers for replicating that backlight though. Must take a lot of finesse to get it that dim and yet still come on at all…
Ben Arthur in Ben Arthur's place. Cool.
Brought all my casios from argos,f91,illuminator and my 5610u,all real.good place to buy casio watches.
Got my sons from Walmart. I’m gonna feel real skeazy if it’s fake.
It's unusual that the fake F-91 is smaller, usually fake watches are bigger.
My biggest takeaway is if it comes in the wrong packaging it’s a fake, no question.
Eh... what? At the end, you want us to click a red flag???
Got one of ebay before a knew they did fakes of them and yip it was a fake. Got one from Argos and a did see a difference but the fake was scarily good, still binned it though
Great video mwc, they are getting a little to close to the real thing, mine looks legit so far
I love that the best way to tell the difference a real versus fake is that the real one is made in China and the fake is “made in Japan” 😆. Thanks as always.
At least with the Skmei clones, you know it's a clone. With these counterfeits, who knows what other illegal activities their funding by selling them.
