+Abida Babida It s a good coordination indeed... Find Simon Phillips one for cj solo on youtube or Sp s solo in Japan in 1999. Where he does some great coordination wich for me is even more impressive then this. And this one is preet damn good

Mike's enviable ability to play really ear-catching polyrhythms (from about 1:12 onward) during his solo makes him one of the great drummers of this era for me; those parts are really great to watch too!! I love the way he engages the audience too during his solo. A lot of 'hot' drummers totally cut themselves off from the audience during solos but not Mike; it's like he's almost saying "Hey check this out" just with his facial expressions....MASTER!
very refreshing to hear composition and musicality in a drum solo. Most of them are just cram as many notes as fast as you can. Players like Mike and Neil Peart understand the space between the notes matters also. Identifiable sections and melodic moments, cool time signatures, and things other players aren't doing. Good stuff here.
Wow, there is a lot of hostility here in the comments. One thing I've noticed in my 50 years on this earth is that I have never once, not once have I heard a successful, professional drummer slam another professional drummer; it just isn't done. They realize that they have a gift and so do many others. Why not just enjoy the music and the talent? I was guilty of this in my teens and I wised up...my regret is that I wish I had wised up sooner and not discounted so quickly the drummers I thought sucked, because looking back on it, it is obvious they were professionals for a reason and really all were pretty darned good; some were amazing and I was just too closed-minded to see it back then.
No one hates MM or slams him buddy. Its just that people miss the passion and emotion of MP in these solos. MM is great as a drummer, no doubt, but MP was a star.
Mangini is that dude at the party that's really good at drums that just makes you smile when he plays. You can't quantify that. There's just so few people that can do that.
Very well done Mike! Not only does this guy have chops, but also he is a solid musician, if you listen to the 'drum solo' it actually has a structure to it! I always get a kick out of people who 'think' they can do better....but in reality they can't! Congrats Mike on having 'haters' this means you are indeed a very talented musician!
Out of all the things he does, the ease with which he goes from playing the lower section of his kit to playing the octobans (all the way up there) and back, with such remarkable accuracy, it is simply mind blowing.
Many pick their favorite drummers because of the way they sound, and sound is very important, but it's also very personal and hard to quantify. I've been drumming all my life, and I'm just past 50. I practice a couple hours a day on work days, 6 to 8 on days off. I'm not as good as Mangini, but I can play a lot of what he plays (certainly not everything...). This much can be safely said....the man is a great athlete. If any of the rest of you can play any Dream Theater songs, you know that most of them are like running sprints. It is so physically demanding to keep a double-kick beat for 6 minutes at 600 bpm and keep moving your hands all over the set. This much can also be said....he has a very solid sense of time. I think he is extraordinary, and I find him inspiring. He is not my favorite drummer though.... for stylistic reasons, I prefer Dave Weckl and Zakir Hussain (but I don't think either would be appropriate with Dream Theater.
IMHO, Weckl is tops in technique and intelligence, along w/Dave Garibaldi of Tower of Power as the King of Groove-two highly inventive drumming Gods among so many like Gadd, Vinnie, Smith, Chambers, Erskine, Purdie, Phillips, Bozzio, Ginger, and many more considered "the greatest" this, that, or the other thing. This is a killer cardio-workout tape #101 drum solo and example of athletecism-enjoyable solo for sure, repetitive at times.
exactly why he has so big of a kit.. as he is ambidextrous he can change the lead hand during a track so he doesn't get a arm tired. also he does the fills using both toms of each side so he doesn't have to move much to be inline with the kit... this way he conserves so much energy, but you have to be drum genius to pull this off.. Mangini is a genius
He's also a great guy that supports local musicians...I do sound in clubs all around Boston & Mike often comes out to support his friends (local bands) and usually is willing to sit in for a few songs (and usually a monster solo)...we just can't get enough of this guy!
This guy is NOT human, he is a machine,lol! Props to whomever constructed this sweet kit...the back floor tom is pure low end power, along with the kicks, but everything on the kit sounded killer. Also to the drum tech that has to tune this massive set and to the sound-tech, that is a master at his craft. Awesome solo!
That is a fantastic solo and very visually exciting to watch as well. Yes I miss Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater but I don't want to stop liking the band because of their parting ways.
this solo takes the listener/viewer on a journey. it tells a story. sure there's ultra fast licks, but by no means is that all there is: it contains theme and variation, suspense and drama, surprises, melodic and rhythmic development, dynamic shifts, even humor and playfulness. i'm not very familiar with mr. mangini, but after seeing this, i'm a fan now. it's clear, he put tons of thought and preparation into this composition. bravo!
Whether you find his solo entertaining or not, musical or not, all of you wish you had his speed and accuracy; I know I do. Yeah, it's not my style, but the guy is a beast.
anyone who says this solo sucks doesnt have a clue. these are techniques and time signatures that are over your head. the things he does are flat out insane. robot like meter several different time signatures being played at the same time with diff body parts. wow...
I am a better person for having watched this. There are melodies in there and you will hear them if you enjoy the sounds as much as I do. There are changes to tempo, time and beats. There are familiar patterns and catchy phrases. Mike is also very playful and happy in this clip, as though he is taking the piss out of someone.....himself! I have no interest in competition. Who is best is opinion only. And as you know, opinions are the best way to trade mark your ignorance and start trouble...........may be he wants to say, "be your best." That is what I will take from the clip, thank you.
Part of my youth was spent watching Mike play drums in his family's basement. He was great then (prodigy!) and grew to be one of the best. VERY proud to have known him 'way back when'.

At least it's up to your personal taste in style and expression of the particular drummer itself!!! I find this solo to be incredible and inspiring. Mangini is up there talent wise with Portnoy, Peart, & Minneman. And to those that are upset at his having "a lot of stuff" onstage, you need to get a grip, he uses everything, and Prog-Metal /Rock uses A LOT of drums, so grow up ya candy-asses.
Man, didn't he have just the most amazing sound ever! He just played with so much force, yet completely controlled. I remember when they played Lost Not Forgotten and he did that quad hit on his 18 floor, it hit like a 22 kick.

When it comes to music and drummers, there can't be a best. Music is so subjective and what I love maybe something you hate. There is no best! The only way to categorize music is what is professional quality VS. amateur and even that encompasses so many variables. If you love it...then it's the best.

To the guy who posted Keith Moon would blow him away, you obviously are an old man who hasn't kept up with drumming and drummers because as good as Keith was he wasn't on this level and that's just honesty. Moon was great and deserves all the respect for his skill but he isn't this good nor would he compete on the level of Terry Bozio, Nick Menza, Dave Lombardo, John Tempeta and so on. Don't put down great skill because you are a fan boi and old.

Keith gets lost and immediately hits a cymbal.. Love Townshend's songwriting.. I think he's one of the best writers ever, but never a fan of Moon.. Drum solos are no way of judging a player anyway.. It's about how he fits in with his bass player and the other members of the band.. Mangini is a friggin' great musician and DT couldn't have made a better choice..

As a former teacher at one of the most prestigious music schools in the world, I'd say he does have "skill". But to each his own. In the end, music is extremely subjective.
^ Exactly as Alex said. I too do get sick of all these 'best solo ever' videos. But you cannot reduce this solo to simply a guy with 'a lot of stuff' and 'two kick drums'. Mike Mangini is incredible, his independence and precision is unreal, and his super efficient technique has made him a very important drummer. If you believe that this isn't 'skill' you really don't know what you're talking about. And as much as I love Buddy Rich myself, you cannot possibly mention him here. Buddy and Mike are on two totally different ends of the spectrum. Mike Mangini is the one of the best in his field. I myself find this just as interesting as any Buddy Rich solo.

I remember that as a drummer this was one of the first ever drum solo I saw. It was so inspiring that time and it was definitely a dream to watch them live. Now, after 6-7 years, today I'm watching this drum solo and I've seen Dream Theater live twice already and I've grown so much as a drummer myself and to this day it still remains as inspiring as it was when I started drumming. I know all the hate comments are there that Mangini is not the best replacement for Porntoy and blah blah blah, I know, coz Porntoy was the Soul of DT. But, we can't deny this beauty that Mangini lays down upon all of us. 🙌🏼

I think he is a great drummer. He is very fast. But like others has said there is no groove or music to the solo. He is often just hitting the drums really fast. Why I like Peart's solos better is that they are more musical. He is not just trying to hit his drums as fast as possible. I think it takes more to make it more musical than just play quickly.

This is a good solo, but for me, to be the best solo needs to have more feelings, not just robotic perfection technique. For example, Neil Peart solos are not so fast or "difficult" (technically speaking) but are much more musical and I enjoy watch them. This one after three minutes is like enough..

I used to see him playing clubs in Boston with Rick Berlin in the 80s. He was so young, and already amazing. His hand speed and control starting at 4:00 is phenomenal. He's Terry Bozzio v2.0, the metal edition.
What better way to pay your respect to another drummer than to let them inspire you! That is, as far as I am concerned the ultimate homage from one musician to another. There really isn't any reason to try and rate or classify a musician. It doesn't matter who is the best or faster, just weather your good or not. When you watch a musician perform, you are hearing what is coming from inside there soul's, and friend's how can you not be inspired. Enjoy the music, and craftsmanship because that's what it's there for. And ultimately there styles are completely different and there IS no comparison!
Me too Mats. While I admire Mr. Mangini's skill and facility, I don't feel that he brings much to Dream Theater's music. While Mike Mangini's solos are breathtaking, his playing leaves me wanting more. For myself, it seems devoid of the musicality and creativity that Mike Portnoy brought to the band. He may not have been able to play a one-handed roll, but who cares. His playing and creativity brought a great deal to the band and served as the foundation of the Dream Theater that once existed.
@David Topchiev I asked. Boring is a subjective concept while been technically developed, is not. Mangini had and always will be compared to Portnoy and it is something to live with. Simple as that. That being said, I must confess. I prefer Mike. Mike is good but Mike is better.

LanceCampeau I have been a huge fan of Mangini's playing for years, well before his days with Dream Theater. Although this solo (and all the others I've watched... including seeing him live) is impressive from a drummers standpoint, I have to agree that it is rather boring. I was expecting a more entertaining & flashier performance from him.... he can do it without any problem, I've seen it in vids from other artists he's performed with..... still a great solo, was just expecting a bit more "showmanship"! God knows I wish I could play like him....
I respect this opinion. Mangini is one of my few favorite drummers. A drum solo however, is meant to display an emotional portrayal of how you feel...as is any solo. Mangini spent over 30 years developing this independence and that is how he translates his emotions. Despite what many may think, he is not trying to show off either hahah. He truly loves using every outlet be it a permutation or tuplet that he can. I absolutely can see where you are coming from though. Good assessment.
Extremely technically skilled and very fast, certainly one of the best drummers in that field, but despite all that, it's not my style. A lot of lightning notes in succession, maybe a rudiment-based groove here or there, with plenty of hard hitting and not nearly as much dynamics or feel-really, 4:30 onwards is REALLY ANNOYING. Honestly, I'd much rather listen to Bruford on twelve drums.

Also Chad Wackerman, Dave Weckl, and Bill Bruford, especially during his jazz years (though his Indiscipline solo in Japan '95 and drum break in Heart of the Sunrise are great examples of drumming minimally but still with playful energy and tension)
Christian Winslett When I say "sound good", I guess I mean not just hitting drums fast and loud like after 4:30 but creating something that could really stand up as a musical piece, something that could be a track on an album on its own. Also, I wouldn't judge a person's emotion based on how much they're smiling. Some drummer can just look kind of stoic... but they can damn well play. And I can't really take that much emotion out of drum solos, or most instrumental solos for that matter-I think when people say a drum solo is "emotional", they're referring to flow of energy-tension and release, which I do like.

This much can be safely said....the man is a great athlete. If any of the rest of you can play any Dream Theater songs, you know that most of them are like running sprints. It is so physically demanding to keep a double-kick beat for 6 minutes at 600 bpm and keep moving your hands all over the set. This much can also be said....he has a very solid sense of time. I think he is extraordinary, and I find him inspiring. He is not my favorite drummer though.... for stylistic reasons, I prefer Dave Weckl and Zakir Hussain (but I don't think either would be appropriate with Dream Theater.

IMHO, Weckl is tops in technique and intelligence, along w/Dave Garibaldi of Tower of Power as the King of Groove-two highly inventive drumming Gods among so many like Gadd, Vinnie, Smith, Chambers, Erskine, Purdie, Phillips, Bozzio, Ginger, and many more considered "the greatest" this, that, or the other thing. This is a killer cardio-workout tape #101 drum solo and example of athletecism-enjoyable solo for sure, repetitive at times.

exactly why he has so big of a kit.. as he is ambidextrous he can change the lead hand during a track so he doesn't get a arm tired. also he does the fills using both toms of each side so he doesn't have to move much to be inline with the kit... this way he conserves so much energy, but you have to be drum genius to pull this off.. Mangini is a genius

This guy is NOT human, he is a machine,lol! Props to whomever constructed this sweet kit...the back floor tom is pure low end power, along with the kicks, but everything on the kit sounded killer. Also to the drum tech that has to tune this massive set and to the sound-tech, that is a master at his craft. Awesome solo!
That is a fantastic solo and very visually exciting to watch as well. Yes I miss Mike Portnoy in Dream Theater but I don't want to stop liking the band because of their parting ways.

this solo takes the listener/viewer on a journey. it tells a story. sure there's ultra fast licks, but by no means is that all there is: it contains theme and variation, suspense and drama, surprises, melodic and rhythmic development, dynamic shifts, even humor and playfulness. i'm not very familiar with mr. mangini, but after seeing this, i'm a fan now. it's clear, he put tons of thought and preparation into this composition. bravo!
Whether you find his solo entertaining or not, musical or not, all of you wish you had his speed and accuracy; I know I do. Yeah, it's not my style, but the guy is a beast.

I am a better person for having watched this. There are melodies in there and you will hear them if you enjoy the sounds as much as I do. There are changes to tempo, time and beats. There are familiar patterns and catchy phrases. Mike is also very playful and happy in this clip, as though he is taking the piss out of someone.....himself! I have no interest in competition. Who is best is opinion only. And as you know, opinions are the best way to trade mark your ignorance and start trouble...........may be he wants to say, "be your best." That is what I will take from the clip, thank you.

Part of my youth was spent watching Mike play drums in his family's basement. He was great then (prodigy!) and grew to be one of the best. VERY proud to have known him 'way back when'.
While this is indeed a killer solo (and Mangini is one of my favorites), I have always been curious as to what criteria is used to determine what is "best," whether it's drums, tuba or accordion...

Mangini's drumming is like a well written book that I could just read time and time again.
I find this solo to be incredible and inspiring. Mangini is up there talent wise with Portnoy, Peart, & Minneman. And to those that are upset at his having "a lot of stuff" onstage, you need to get a grip, he uses everything, and Prog-Metal /Rock uses A LOT of drums, so grow up ya candy-asses.
Man, didn't he have just the most amazing sound ever! He just played with so much force, yet completely controlled. I remember when they played Lost Not Forgotten and he did that quad hit on his 18 floor, it hit like a 22 kick.

This is what awesome looks and sounds like. You won't find many drummers better technically than Master Mike Mangini. To the guy who posted Keith Moon would blow him away, you obviously are an old man who hasn't kept up with drumming and drummers because as good as Keith was he wasn't on this level and that's just honesty. Moon was great and deserves all the respect for his skill but he isn't this good nor would he compete on the level of Terry Bozio, Nick Menza, Dave Lombardo, John Tempeta and so on.

It's about how he fits in with his bass player and the other members of the band.. Mangini is a friggin' great musician and DT couldn't have made a better choice..

As a former teacher at one of the most prestigious music schools in the world, I'd say he does have "skill". But to each his own. In the end, music is extremely subjective.
^ Exactly as Alex said. I too do get sick of all these 'best solo ever' videos. But you cannot reduce this solo to simply a guy with 'a lot of stuff' and 'two kick drums'. Mike Mangini is incredible, his independence and precision is unreal, and his super efficient technique has made him a very important drummer. If you believe that this isn't 'skill' you really don't know what you're talking about. And as much as I love Buddy Rich myself, you cannot possibly mention him here. Buddy and Mike are on two totally different ends of the spectrum. Mike Mangini is the one of the best in his field. I myself find this just as interesting as any Buddy Rich solo.

I remember that as a drummer this was one of the first ever drum solo I saw. It was so inspiring that time and it was definitely a dream to watch them live. Now, after 6-7 years, today I'm watching this drum solo and I've seen Dream Theater live twice already and I've grown so much as a drummer myself and to this day it still remains as inspiring as it was when I started drumming.
I know all the hate comments are there that Mangini is not the best replacement for Porntoy and blah blah blah, I know, coz Porntoy was the Soul of DT. But, we can't deny this beauty that Mangini lays down upon all of us. 🙌🏼

There are musitions with talent and musicality and there are people with amazing technique and will for endless practice time.
I think he is a great drummer. He is very fast. But like others has said there is no groove or music to the solo. He is often just hitting the drums really fast. Why I like Peart's solos better is that they are more musical. He is not just trying to hit his drums as fast as possible. I think it takes more to make it more musical than just play quickly.
Stop talking pls... Each hit in that solo had thinking behind it. Metres and polyrhythms bro. They aren't easy listening, but they show SOOOOOOO much more technicality than standard "musical" rhythms. When you develop an ear for it, they sound enjoyable, adding a flair to the standard musicality that's heard everywhere.

Yeah, Mike is a great technician... but boring. It's like listening to Michael Bolton but it tires the ear very quickly. Mike Portnoy had it all over him in the showmanship and dynamic area.

I am sure there are at least 10 arguments for either guitarist being "the best" and thousands of people in each camp, but at the end of the day they are (were) both awesome guitarists, and ones that countless other guitarists look up to as examples of "the best", and as artists that pushed the skill level of countless guitarists UP.
This is a good solo, but for me, to be the best solo needs to have more feelings, not just robotic perfection technique. For example, Neil Peart solos are not so fast or "difficult" (technically speaking) but are much more musical and I enjoy watch them. This one after three minutes is like enough..

I used to see him playing clubs in Boston with Rick Berlin in the 80s. He was so young, and already amazing. His hand speed and control starting at 4:00 is phenomenal. He's Terry Bozzio v2.0, the metal edition.

What better way to pay your respect to another drummer than to let them inspire you! That is, as far as I am concerned the ultimate homage from one musician to another. There really isn't any reason to try and rate or classify a musician. It doesn't matter who is the best or faster, just weather your good or not. When you watch a musician perform, you are hearing what is coming from inside there soul's, and friend's how can you not be inspired. Enjoy the music, and craftsmanship because that's what it's there for. And ultimately there styles are completely different and there IS no comparison!

Me too Mats. While I admire Mr. Mangini's skill and facility, I don't feel that he brings much to Dream Theater's music. While Mike Mangini's solos are breathtaking, his playing leaves me wanting more. For myself, it seems devoid of the musicality and creativity that Mike Portnoy brought to the band. He may not have been able to play a one-handed roll, but who cares. His playing and creativity brought a great deal to the band and served as the foundation of the Dream Theater that once existed.

LanceCampeau I have been a huge fan of Mangini's playing for years, well before his days with Dream Theater. Although this solo (and all the others I've watched... including seeing him live) is impressive from a drummers standpoint, I have to agree that it is rather boring. I was expecting a more entertaining & flashier performance from him.... he can do it without any problem, I've seen it in vids from other artists he's performed with..... still a great solo, was just expecting a bit more "showmanship"! God knows I wish I could play like him....
I respect this opinion. Mangini is one of my few favorite drummers. A drum solo however, is meant to display an emotional portrayal of how you feel...as is any solo. Mangini spent over 30 years developing this independence and that is how he translates his emotions. Despite what many may think, he is not trying to show off either hahah. He truly loves using every outlet be it a permutation or tuplet that he can. I absolutely can see where you are coming from though. Good assessment.
Extremely technically skilled and very fast, certainly one of the best drummers in that field, but despite all that, it's not my style. A lot of lightning notes in succession, maybe a rudiment-based groove here or there, with plenty of hard hitting and not nearly as much dynamics or feel-really, 4:30 onwards is REALLY ANNOYING. Honestly, I'd much rather listen to Bruford on twelve drums.

Eh. I enjoy drum solos sounding good. I like Gary Husband's solos on Allan Holdsworth's IOU and Metal Fatigue. Also Chad Wackerman, Dave Weckl, and Bill Bruford, especially during his jazz years (though his Indiscipline solo in Japan '95 and drum break in Heart of the Sunrise are great examples of drumming minimally but still with playful energy and tension)

Christian Winslett When I say "sound good", I guess I mean not just hitting drums fast and loud like after 4:30 but creating something that could really stand up as a musical piece, something that could be a track on an album on its own.
Also, I wouldn't judge a person's emotion based on how much they're smiling. Some drummer can just look kind of stoic... but they can damn well play. And I can't really take that much emotion out of drum solos, or most instrumental solos for that matter-I think when people say a drum solo is "emotional", they're referring to flow of energy-tension and release, which I do like.
I used to think Mangini sucked when I was a beginner drummer, because I didn't understand what he was doing.
Have a look at John Bonham from Led Zeppelin at "Moby Dick"

+heike hasenmaier He is currently in Dream Theater. Their last two albums feature his drumming, "A Dramatic Turn Of Events", and "Dream Theater". Also check out Dream Theater's original drummer Mike Portnoy, he's reallt good!

Look the guy is talented but portnoy sound more organic this guy sounds like a robot the hits are too precise dream theater sounds way different with this guy

Um. That's not a valid critique.
Maybe the critique you're looking for is it sounds "soulless". Even though I don't personally believe that, it makes way more sense than "he's playing too precisely."
