RIP MCA… I remember “She’s On It!” on a TV station called U-68. It sounded like a surfer rock song but I was okay with that. I liked that sort of music. Then when the “Paul Revere/a-It’s The New Style” 12” single came out, it was a wrap, I was hooked on the Beasties. Hip Hop broke ground with mixtures of beats ti make brand new cutting edge beats and instrumentals. The entire background music played backwards. Who ever thought of that. The beat of the following song sounding like a hard rock song but it is throws you through a loop because the placement of the bass and snare are switched up a little bit. Since PE is uo there, might as well mention how “Rebel Without A Pause” shook things up. Hip Hop needs to get back to that. Ground breaking beats but not Ultimate Break Beats. That’s old.

Ehhhh, probably not. Beasies got in because they are an actual band. They're punk rock kids, playing instruments, who had a disturbing amount of rhythm. So much so that they had to create a new style to be classified. That style? Beastie Boy style. You can't categorize an original.
LL, Biggie, and many others have certainly influenced music including some rock, and I F'in love them, but they are MCs with a mic, not musicians with an instrument.

Hip hop and rock have so much in common at the roots of their culture. A healthy disrespect for authority, a willingness to explore outside boundaries. The genres are two sides of the same coin, and fit so well together when people embrace them.

Their samples were on point, they were dumpster divers finding new and interesting sounds to pull from with a plethora of possibilities. I got so fuckin' lucky to see the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, live, in the summer of 1987. I think I still have my tshirt I bought at the show. Me and my high school friends went to the show in Sacramento, CA, and we were in the middle of the crowd when I couldn't take it and had to be pulled out because I was too short and getting pulled under - I will NEVER forget being passed up to the front of the CalExpo stage by the crowd, seeing the Beasties from UPSIDE DOWN before the stage crew at the front pulled me out of the crowd and onto my feet under the stage. Instead of kicking me out of the arena they let me back in, and I met up with my friends at our van after the show.
I'll be 54 in a few days (how the FUCK did that happen?!) and my memories of summer '87 will never be forgotten. I consider myself blessed to be a witness to artists like the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five and so many others as they changed the face of modern music.
This short pudgy white chick who always loved language and word play was entranced by rap and hip hop, and I feel blessed to have been a witness to the birth of a brand new kind of music called rap/hip hop in my lifetime. I bow down to the artists who've made an impact on my soul with their words and music. I cannot thank these artists enough.
