#1 is so true. Just last night, I used metal clips and sat under the hooded dryer for 45 minutes. I noticed some parts of my locs were flattened by the clips. Thankfully, I only used clips on the front part. I’ll just retwist without clips next time. Thanks!
How timely was this video!!! As well as the one with your mom. (I just saw both today) I washed my hair last night and curled it on pipe cleaners. I was feeling a bit disheartened as I looked at some of my locs. (I am 21 mos in as of 22 Jan). Some of my locs have thinning areas. I am one who likes up dos, and I will keep them in for weeks. Well, after listening to your videos. No more!!!In fact, no more up dos unless it’s a special event/occasion. Locing my hair has been the BEST thing that I have EVER done for my hair and I don’t want to risk damage or even worse, losing locs for the sake of “convenience “. Thank you so much for the tips and tricks. Time to just let my hair be free!!!!
Thanks for all of that. I have had locs for 9 years. Very thick free form. Started at age 21. I have noticed some have thinned from stressing. They are starting to get heavy. Especially after showers lol. Thinking about connecting more of them, but I feel like some will fall off. Loving this journey
Awww, so nice to know you have 9 years + in. I am also freeform for 3 years now. And, yes, the roots are the boss. I noticed I have to connect and marry the ones that start coming in finer. It’s really scary because I do not want to lose any do to growing faster at the roots. I lost only one because at the roots it was thicker and n between there was a slight finer strand than back thick, which I think what occurred was the texture of my hair was way too smooth at that point vs coarse with too much gel product , so when I lightly pulled it, OMG, it detached from the thicker portion. I still struggle with the new growth n how to maintain it from growing too long. We know it does not come out matted or Loc at this process. I have noticed my hair actually retwist itself on its own in certain areas and certain ones. I am grateful for that. I am starting to get some to wick. One person I met started way young and had his in for 32 years. He was 32 years old and shared that my hair will go through many stages as it grows. I am also loving my journey. After all, I can’t see myself ever resulting back to loose hair salons where I had to spend hours in getting flat irons, perms, wigs, braids. No way, that’s not a life I miss anymore to just have one day to sport loose hair. Locs maintained is a miracle come true for me. Plus, I never had to go to a shop for my starter locs. I decided freeform, at the beginning and just pull the locs apart when needed works for me.

Salt water has always been my magical go to "thing" Soaking it in that. And the roots for the most part stay consistent.. They start to loosen if I dont soak them regularly at least once a month.. Hi, I’m 5 months into my journey and I’ve started to notice that 4 locs in the back of my head closest to my neck are kind of thin. The new growth Is growing in thinner than the width of the loc that’s forming. I could be paranoid about it but I don’t over retwist and I don’t ever style so I’m not sure what to do. Is this normal?
Yes! Heavy dreads! Im a white dude with really fine hair and i have a couple dreads behind my ear (already murder to try to balance those with the rest of my loose hair) but my roots are always concerningly thin. I'm pretty sure its because they're so heavy and longer than the rest of my hair. Anyway, very helpful video, thanks for sharing!
the locs that are thin for me are the locs in the back of my head. I was retwisting my locs once a month and i decided to one time wait longer to retwist my hair. It's now 3 months ever since my hair was retwisted, two of my dreads are now thinner near the middle down to the scalp. What did i do to mess up?
I’d say you left it too long. A lot of videos say retesting too often causes this however I have learnt that if I take too long, my smaller parted locs suffer.
How about water heat? Can that weaken and thin longs ? I typically shower with very hot water, then let it slightly air dry, then use gentle products to retwist. I retwist often and do styles often.. but my roots are okay, it’s more so the end of my locs or the middle part of the locs that thin out , sometimes fall out.. Do you recommend cold or regular warm water ? Or is that not significant. Either way learned a lot from this video thank you 🥺❤️🙏🏾
Thank you for watching! Honestly I’m no professional so I cannot tell you exactly what you should or shouldn’t do to your hair. One thing I will say is that my hair has seen progress when it comes to retaining moisture when I rinse my hair in cool water but when I use hot water it dries out.
What if your hair was already thin, and you now have locs.. that's me. My crown area is pretty thin but my hair was already thin. The back is very thick however. Stress from a divorce thinned my natural hair 8 years ago, and it never recovered 😢

@@NuLORD66 yes it surely does ! Leaving your locs to air dry w/o doing it properly will cause them to not dry fully. It can cause mold and or mildew within the locs. If you’re going to air dry I’d do it early in the day and spend a lot of time in the sun.
@@crethehardwayit only causes mold if u don’t let them air dry properly by placing a wrap on it while it’s wet. I laid dry is the best in the summer sun ☀️
Hi so I’m just now seeing this because I want to start my loc journey but is it possible to do the interlocking method with out the possible threat of thinning? If you aren’t doing it to tight? Because my hair gets fuzzy quick and I know the interlocking will keep it down more then twisting but I don’t want the possible chance of thinning over time
yes you can I have interlocked locs but be aware that you have to research the locticians in your area as several locticians have told me to my face that I do not have traditional loc's...there is alot of hair stigma in the loc communiy too so this is also something to consider because starting traditionally you will have more options to stylists as many just dont know how to operate a crotchet needle.....
I know it’s been 2 years lol BUT to answer your question. Every individual is different but I’d recommend 1-2 times every 2 months during the summer season. Winter season you can go without as long as your not overly sweating and so forth .
I've had mine for about a 1 1/2 yrs I just started using fresh aleo vera plant and flaxseed gel mixed with your choice of oil. I used an essential citrus oil, it's the best product I've put in my hair since i had locks. I haven't seen any build up either, like using eco gel or other store bought products, and it's cheaper 😉
I used Bobby pins or rubber bands in the beginning stages... Similar to the way ppl use clips. I'm 2 yrs in and never sat under a dryer. I maintain my locs myself. I also use rubber bands towards the ends of my son's locs bc his are still short and it holds well.

Perhaps use the COOL setting on a hooded hair dryer to avoid heat damage. It will just take a little longer to dry the hair with cool air.
