Okay, great camera aside - I didn't know you practised Tai Chi... Speak more of your multiple talents, Mr. Vong!
I do not the the mk. VII with the long focal length and slow aperture ! The Sony RX100 VA are the one to get !!!
@@vizualyse have you not seen my travel series?? Always flexing my tai chi 🤣
Do you think this camera can be reliable enough to shoot professional photography on a budget??
@@justm720 Do you mean professional as earning money from photography !? I do not think every customers will appreciate the low quality of the images ! If you mean "professional" as if the Camera has a good build quality, yes it is.
Thank God its not another video by some TH-camr pushing the Fujifilm x100vi. No one is buying that camera (because they cant, not for 6 years). Thanks for the video Jason.
damn my next few are X100VI related 🫣 I wouldn't saying I'm "pushing" it since the camera doesn't need any promotions like you said. I just wanted to document and share my experience.
@@JasonVong Its like YEAH its cool but no one can get it so why bother? A much better series for you would be using small lenses on a Sony A7 IV such as a Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 or something that competes with the Fujifilm X100VI. L
@@classic.cameras Or smaller ILC
Panasonic GM5 at 200g w. viewfinder and .. interchangeable lenses!!

The current allocation is sold out. Just set a notification from B&H for when it’s in stop again then buy it as soon as you get that email.
@@classic.cameras No one would watch it, so it would be stupid to put time and afford into it. It's for channels that are focused on such lenses. Even if the Fuji is sold out, the customers want that camera so they will watch the videos.
just travelled for 2+ weeks in vietnam with a zv1, instead of all the big heavy cams and lenses ... so happy and enjoyable and managed to create 2 videos from the trip (instead of coming back home with shoulder and back pain)
Try being a sports photographer.
I’m still rocking the RX100VI and I love it and it stays in my everyday bag.
Bought it couple of weeks ago, and it's a beast in a tiny body.
RX100 will always be in my best of cameras. Crazy prices used too.
Agree with you. This little camera is still literally the best and more versatile capable compact camera out there
My favorite video that I watched today! I've been looking at that camera. I've been wanting a little pocket camera that I can add to my kit!
Thanks Jason.
I took this and the a7cII with 12-24 and 24-70 to Thailand. Ended up using the RX100 the most. just stuck it in the pocket where ever we walked about.
I used to use the RX100 Version 1 (10 Years Ago) - a great camera. The merged exposures in one jpeg file on low setting created some great night photos.
I bought the RX100V second hand with its great 24-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens and 1st in the range to have phase detect autofocus with subject tracking. It also has an active ND filter. The RX100 models after went to a greater range on the lens of 24-200mm at F2.5-4.5 which seemed a bit of a compromise for low light situations.
They need to update it!!
I recently used it for the GUTS Tour. I was in lower bowl and it absolutely delivered. It’s so great for concerts.
Jason, you are so right. I have one of these little gems and it rocks. Taking it on a trip soon and will use it when I don’t want to lug the A7CR and lens. Great video as always. Don
Thanks for the nice video. This version is cool, and I like the RX100V(A) version as well, which has the 24-70mm equivalent lens with the brighter f1.8-2.8 aperture which lets in quite a bit more light.
Got one last year 2023 as my skiing camera - just perfect! Fits in slim ski jacket pocket unobtrusively, fast into action with the pop-up view finder and great IQ.
Great video. Thanks!
I am using the RX100 in addition to my Nikon fullframe system, mostly for travelling.
I own the model 5A and 7. I take both of them with me, because of the different lenses.
The M5A for low light because of its 1.8 aperture and the M7 for outdoor, or whenever I need the 200 mm tele lens. I am well aware of the restrictions that comes from the 1” sensor, but I am very happy with them as travel companions.
I've owned a RX100 since they were first released. I currently own the RX100 vii. It's my pocket camera.
got one recently and took it out to a fun little place in Houston. I’m a sony a6500, 24mm f2.8 pancake edc dude but the size was so dramatically different from that setup that I fell in love instatly
nice quick little video
I have the sony rx100vii, i love it, definitely use it only for certain circumstances, like when i go backpacking/hiking, family trips, or like he said its good for taking to areas like concerts. Its crazy how good it is but definitely not for everyone
I think I bought the last available mark vii in Australia, about 4 years ago. It was my first camera and my criteria included the EVF and the pocketability. I took it on holiday recently and it's still awesome. I now have the a6700 as I am learning more about taking better pics. Your review a few years ago was part of my research!
Its a great camera ive owned the mark 1 version for years. It has one major flaw and that is if you get dust on the sensor like i did then it is crazy difficult to clean the sensor and it has to go back to Sony. Sensor dust can happen in a flash even if you are careful. Next camera for me Panasonic G100 m 4/3 where you can access the sensor easily.
I have an RX III and still rocks. Is only a 24-70 equivalent lens but still, the camera can take great pictures when I do not want to move around 1 full backpack with gear.
I love the RX100 VII, but it's amazing to think it came out five years ago and they seem to have forgotten about both it and the RX10 series. It's also hard to get hold of new in some regions including the UK. But yes I agree, when my back started hurting - actually it was my knees in my case - I downsized to the RX100 VII and made a video all about travelling light. I ended up trading the zoom for the fixed lens and bigger sensor of the X100V for my travels, but I'm very happy with either.
Rx 100 series are a good upgrade over your phone camera these days. Now, even in 2024 I got a Mk Va not the VII strictly on aperture considerations, gotta film/take photos fast in the woods etc.
And just got back from Disneyland Paris and it totally worth its money. You kinda don't want to take a bigger camera in such a crowded environement , where extension sticks/monopds are forbidden. So as a holiday trip camera paired with a carbon monopod as shooting "handle" and a couple Gopros or any other action cam you are pretty much covered.
My back was killing me for years from shooting weddings with two Canon 1Dx Mark II bodies. Two weeks ago, i bought two Sony cameras and oh my God!! They're so light!!
welcome to Sony!
Im contemplating buying it for years but was waiting for the VIII
Put a preorder in now 😊
I've been making TH-cam travel videos for 4 years with that beast. It's built like a tank. Thought about one of the new ZV's but those are plastic and I beat mine up. I travel full time and it has taken every beating that I've thrown at it. If they do make a Mark VIII, I'll be first in line to get one! I also have an A9, but that now stays in storage, because I'm old!!
This is a camera that I've really enjoyed using.
I most recently used it on a trip that involved a lot of museums and outdoor streetscapes.
For nature shots I use another camera (FF) with a longer lens.
I don't shoot video.
I enjoy using cameras, not a phone, for my photography. This is a good compromise for times when you really want to use a camera but don't want to carry one
It's crazy how I used to travel with a full setup: Camera body with extra lenses plus gimbal, action camera, backup camera, batteries and such...now, I reach for the lightest form factor. I'm good with my Sony RX100 VA, or my action cam, or my Insta360 OneX, or just my phone camera.
I've owned a RX100 Mark III for 10 years now. Very convenient for casual photography and it produces prefectly good images. The only complaint is in the lack of buttons. Choosing the autofocus point is really awkward, and should you want to focus manually, setting a dedicate button to switch between Av and focus is the fastest way.
I have a mark 5, it still had the internal nd. I use it a ton for video, on bright days i also use a magnetic adapter with a second variable nd to get shallow dof, it makes nice video, as long as you use nd! Love that camera
I wish they left the ND in on the m7 but alas... good thing i love the zoom too much to forgive them on it.
That ending... poor Viv :))
I totally agree on your advice. In my dozens' of trips to Japan in the last 10+ years, I always carry a RX100 (version 1, 3 and 7 depending on the years that they were lanuched). During my trips, my backpack was heavy because it was packed with many travel related stuffs other than the cameras. In many occasions, I was so lazy to take my APSC or FF camera out from my backpack that I just shoot the scene using the RX100.
The image quality of the photos from the RX100 was good enough, although still noticeably not as good as the APSC or FF cameras if compared side by side. In my recent trips, the numbers of photos that I took by the RX100 were more that the photos taken by the APSC or FF cameras.
Bought the version VI for my next trip to Europe. Also taking Fuji xe4 with 18-55 lens. Scaling down my photo gear for this trip. For video - pocket 3 and go 3. All fits easily in a mini sling bag.
interested in why you got the M6 but not the M7
VI was a lot cheaper on the used market and my main use will be for the zoom ability on my trip. Otherwise I’ll be using the Fuji xe4 with the 18-55 lens or the 27mm 2.8 lens. Thanks for your wonderful video!
My RX100V (consciously chosen over VII for the focal length and used price) is showing its age but comes in clutch when I do not want to bring out my main A7 body for casual photos. Smaller body means I can also switch to a smaller/lighter bag.
3:04 yes please 🙏
That's the thing, where is the 10bit 422 1 inch new SONY RX100m8 or the LUMIX LX10m2?
Better yet, buy the A7CR. Phenomenal. Compact and brilliant.
loved my RX100 iv, and made tons of content using that because of its capability and pocket-friendly size. Wish SONY would make one more last version just like how they updated the Sony A6700 camera. Would sell my x100v for that in a heartbeat.
I also use some tape to help open the screen while in cage.
Yes - Genesis final tour was a must - no just stills - yes did have issues at the O2 in London who ban based on “zoom” what mad they would have to take Samsung phones of people - I just stated the actual mm (72mm) not the 35mm equivalent (200mm) - no issues (always carry spare battery)
I’m in my mid-70s and now using Sony RX100V. In the prime of my youth, my back sometimes would hurt doing the motions in getting more angles in photography. But never did I swapped my bulky DSLRs and lenses for small-sensored cameras.
Do they get alot of dust in the lens, ? i got a lumix compact 3 years ago it end up in the garbage.
I've wanted one of these so long, just for concerts where I don't have a photo pass. But I feel like I wouldn't use it for much else. If I want the best photos, I'll bring my mirrorless. If I want to be as light as possible, my iPhone does just fine.
I do wish Sony releases a new Rx1r
RX line is such a gem. I want all their models updated. Yes. Even RX0 😒
Jokes had me laughing a well deserved thumbs up lol
What interesting is, I searched for RX100 VII for 2 months, and could not find one. I did find Rx100 V, but I needed that 200mm. And then couple of week back I compiled a concept for How and Why there is a NEED for next RX100... I am calling that Rx100 X.
Definitely having the grippy base plate with wood has made it magically more usable for me…
I bought the 2nd generation of this camera back when it came out, I still have it 😎
is that the one with the hotshoe?
@@JasonVong yessir
I wish companies would make these again. I buy cheap $200 phones, never the $1k+ flagships that finally have serviceable image quality, so I need a real dedicated compact camera.
I love these because I get to leave the stresses of my phone behind and not my photography. No distractions.
Plus:
🔹Lossless quality optical zoom 🔎
🔹Flip screen so you can see yourself and use the best lens at the same time ✌️
🔹Built-in ND for video exposure 😎
🔹A nice big 1" sensor for great pocketable IQ and DR. ✨
🔹Dedicated ergonomics built for purpose and custom modes to ensure fast tactile operation which at times can be set while powered down ⚡
🔹It doesn't waste my phone battery or storage while shooting 🔋
🔹It doesn't need to be updated every year for another $1k because they killed the battery life and RAM with updates. 💵
🔹It looks touristy so I'm less likely to creep people out taking photos of them on a compact than with my phone. 😊
I checked out the Xiaomi 14 1" sensor with the shutter button module, but it costs more than my GRIII for way less camera. Personally, I'd rather spend more to get more camera, and watch TH-cam on a cheapo Samsung.
I'm more amazed that you actually formatted a TH-cam comment like a word doc 🤯
@@JasonVong I just want to be easy to read. And I find emojis cute. 😂
I'd rather buy a RX100 VIII than a Sony FF camera, that is for sure! My wife's ZV-1 is one tiny photo mean machine, wonder what a updated RX100 would be like.
As always, great video! I’ve been wanting one for YEARS but they’re so expensive. I’d rather buy a lens lol
I was recently at an event and wish I had this camera. The zv-1 ii just did not have the reach!
Too bad it is not available to buy anywhere. I recently passed on my RX100M2. I have taken a lot of good photos with it, but when I tried it out, I couldn't believe how much better my phone photos were.

Hey @JasonVong have you ever used the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS200D?
Seems you can't find any for sale now.
Hey Jason, what would be a decent price to purchase the rx100 vii used? I’ve seen them go for 1100 on ebay used and it doesn’t feel right paying that much for a used 5 year old camera.
I just got back from a hike where I carried my RX100v7 and a Smallrig cage.
Waiting for rx100m8
With modern "AI" noise reduction software, these pocket cams (especially the 1" cams) go way further than they did when released 5-15 yrs ago. It's not even that crazy to shoot good 1/1.7 chips now that ISO 1600 is actually salvageable in LR.
Hum... I'm curious. How does the RX100 compares with Panasonic and Canon 1" competitor cameras? Is the quality really better? Significantly so?
at least for Lumix, the video autofocus shall be much better, as Panasonic didn't use PDAF for a long time.
Canon uses older versions of the sensors. The current ones use the same as RX100 Mark IV. Canon does have faster lenses but they go to only 100 mm and 120 mm. Sony does have the VA model which is faster but goes only up to 70 mm. Sony has high frame rate video modes that Canon does not have and fast electronic shutters. So if you are interested in fast action stuff, then Sony is the way to go. To normal photography Canon may be better.
Panasonic has two models, one is f/1.4 at the wide angle but slows fast when zoomed and it is old. Another is a super zoom up to 360 mm but again much slower
@@okaro6595I thought the newer canon ones had the stacked 1” sensor in them… also the 100 and the 120 are at 2.8.
I just had surgery and was told that I wouldn't be able to lift more than 2kgs for the first 6 weeks (and that's with both hands) and then no more than 5kgs for the following 6 weeks! Rather than put my business on hold, I got myself a Fujifilm X-T5 (meets the weight requirements - just) and I'm loving it. Yes, we're definitely getting old though!
I get that cell phones are popular for photography, but i will never understand why Sony abandoned the RX line of cameras just when they were getting so brilliant. I cant imagine how even more incredible they'd be with 2024 tech. All a Mark 8 needs is 4k 60p, better stabilization, and better low light processing.
I shot wedding with a rx100 when my full frame gear went down. The results shocked me
At 67 years old I had to laugh. I don't nap, unless you count when I fall asleep in front of the computer. LOL. However, I did just weigh my camera backpack with the Canon 6D, 80D, Tramron 24-70, and 70-200 f2.8 lenses and a few other things in there. Around 17 libs. May explain why it gets left home a lot. I have two little Sonys. a5100 and a5000. Great little cameras, but I do miss a viewfinder. I'm considering going with a smaller M43 or taking a look at that little Sony RX. Just remember. It's not hell to get old. Just hell to feel that way.
Nice camera, but I doubt camera choices make that much of a difference. Exercise, do some mobility work, lift relatively heavy weights 2-3x a week and stretch…the latter I often leave out and that’s when my back gets sore. I’m approaching 70. Still, a nice camera! I like mine, but would be very tempted by the older V as well…faster lens, but less zoom.
Where did you buy the etui for the sony rx100 VII?
The Last Rockstars🔥
Biggity biggity bang bang bang
I picked up a v4 when I was in Osaka for $330 because my girlfriend was tired of trading lenses on and off with me between our a7r4 and r2. It's crazy to hold after spending the day with the r4 around your neck, it feels like I'm holding my iphone.
I have the RX100M5A. Doesn't zoom as much.
It's indeed an amazing camera, but the lack of ND is a huge issue for shooting videos on a sunny day, and solutions to add external NDs are really inelegant to say the least. Also, the battery life is awful, I usually need to pack 5 batteries for a day's shoot and almost always have to recharge all of them during the night. You are absolutely right that they a just one version away from perfection, but all the years of waiting has made me accept that maybe Sony has lost interest in the rx100 line and there probably won't be a viii.
Yeah I wish they left the ND in the m7... Batteries ehhh they are so stick thin so I can understand why videos will kill it quickly. I personally always carry 5-6 like you but I'm always all for better battery life.
I have a RX100IV that's getting rusty but that 5yo VII crap is too expensive to upgrade, come on Sony you just have to release a VIII and I'll buy it!
I would imagine if they did an VIII that it would be just as expensive though 🫣
@@JasonVong I'm more keen to spend 1200$ on a brand new VIII rather than a 5yo VII 😅
That ending 😂

Its such a shame that sony discontinued this line. This was such a great camera.
Sony should revive this or at least make camera similar to this.
i'm literally talking about the RX line every chance I get so they can see people still wanting this! it's so good!
A large portion of the photos on my wall came from an RX100 and not an ILC. Especially from concerts and photos of loved ones - it’s unimposing and people are at ease around it. I found my Mk. V locally for about 300. 🤯

Jason, come on, you're not old! But I am, and I just bought an RX100 VII - they're getting hard to find. I don't know if Sony is dropping the line, which would be a shame. Quote { We're too old to stay past our bed time anyway } UnQuote. Good answer to "your camera is noisy when taking pictures in the dark".
I do want a RX100 VIII, but there isn’t much market for it, plus Sony’ resources are limited.
RX100 VIII has been rumoured to launch in 2020 with an even more useful 20-200mm lens (although that would certainly increase the price further), but it delayed again and again, to the point that I think it’s cancelled.
You see, smartphones today can do zoom from somewhere like 13mm to 240mm (Samsung S21 Ultra referenced here), wider range than the 20-200mm lens proposed for RX 100 VIII.
I know the sensors on phones are not as big, and the lenses are prime, which means you don’t get seamless zoom (other than Sony Xperia 1 series phones, but that is still made up of 2 prime lens and a zoom lens).
But most people aren’t going to care about that. They find their phone fine for all of their photography needs. There isn’t demand for Sony to make a RX100 VIII.
Instead, I would say Sony’s resources are well-spent on the ZV1 series. Vlogging on phone still kind of sucks, because of the tiny front camera. Sony has attempted to make a vlogging monitor for their phone, but that was cumbersome and didn’t work well, to say the least. That’s why we still have ZV cameras.
I personally do want an RX100 VIII, but the ship has sailed.
Speak for yourself, I'm 17 and my back never hurts because I can't afford heavy gear
timely for me! My NEX body is starting give up the ghost, and so I'm considering if I should go UP to the A7CR with all new glass, or stay in APS and reuse my existing glass. Now I have this option to consider. Something lighter than all the above.
I wonder though, how does the image quality and dynamic range compare to the 6700 let's say? I'll be using it for travel photography 90% of the time, and will be viewing the photos on a 4k TV. I almost never print, and if I do, 10x14 coffee books is usually what I go for...
This! I have an A6400 and an RX100V. I have good eyesight and a 4k monitor. I see a considerable difference. I still chose to take the RX100V to Havana over the A6400 despite the IQ difference. I'm hoping to explore Topaz or other post processing because the RX just made travel easier being so small.
interestingly been reviewing a set of photos recently and the biggest difference in IQ was the lens. My Zeiss 35/1.8 shots in the same light/environment were head an shoulders better than the touit 12/2.8. perhaps more importantly reviewing some older photo sets. My hit rate in low light was shockingly poor and wondering that the difference is between a6700 ibis vs a7cr ibis for low light IQ.
At this point, loathed to go to a7cr if just for better glass at the ultra-wide range...unless there's is a marked benefit to the FF sensor
Sony should release RX100M8, not ZV-1M3
I really enjoy this camera, but the battery is truly terrible for video. I use an external usb battery pack when on a tripod. If carried, I always have at least 3 batteries with me. I still love this thing.
I mean the batteries are stick thin 🫣 quite understandable that video recording will juice it out quick. BUT I'm always onboard for better battery life.
