Looking forward to the 6 1/2 woofer shoot out. I think 6 1/2 is the smallest woofer i would like to have and they are still priced good compared to 8 inch woofer in a bookshelf speaker
I use the sx60 paired with a sub from b&w. Everything below 90hz goes to the sub. I also boost the treble from the amp just a bit so it gives them a bit more clarity, and instantly there is much more definition both in the mids and the highs.
I'll take it. Andy Dryer, Zac G, The offspring of Zac G and Will Ferrell. The chief from battle star galactica. I think that covers all of the comparisons. Appreciate it.
I've always wanted to see someone thoroughly review the Cambridge Audio Minx XL. It's supposed to be a step or two up from the SX-50 but it isn't inexpensive considering other options. The SQ would have to be alot better than the SX series. It typically doesn't come down in price, isn't a big seller but what it offers is a very, very small package and a gloss finish using a 5.25 inch woofer and 1" tweeter..
The Minx XL are simply SX 50s with a nicer gloss finish, crutchfield told me there is no difference in build quality or internal components, simply a nicer gloss finish.
@@thomasward00 I thought the crossover was improved? Anyhow, they just dropped in price by 25% on Amazon. $225+tx. They may work as nearfield desktop speakers.

It's all about the music. But why not get the most for your money?!?! Thank you for what you do, and for "keeping it real" (as the kids would say...). Great Review!!!
The way you kept saying "I think there are better options" had the same cadence as the line "I'm thinking of ending things" from the movie of the same title. Thanks for your review!
I have some SX-50's from Crutchfield coming that I plan to pair with a Loxjie A30 for my small-medium bedroom. Can't wait! Beginning to think I should have gone with the Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 for the same price instead... Luckily their return policy is pretty good in case I don't like them. Thanks for the review Randy, I know it's an old video but still very helpful!
I need a front ported 6.5 bookshelf speaker due to space issues since placement is more of a no brainer than rear ported speakers. The other thing I want is enough bass that I won't need a subwoofer. The ES20s have the punch but are rear ported, the Elacs B6.2 seem to sound good but are the least forgiving of sources and probably dont have the same bass punch.....are the Cambridge the answer? The ones you mentioned do not have the bass that I want.
I was considering a pair of Cambridge SX50 for a room. I have the Wharfedale 11.2 and they are good for a small room place on the wall, but I was considering these or SX50 for my other room, otherwise a pair of 12.2 or Denton 80/85's or Evo 4.1 from Wharfedale, so much options.
Another great video Randy. I have and really enjoy an older pair of Cambridge S30's. From your description of the SX-60 it seems that they have a very similar sound. Would like to see you compare the Micca RB 42's up against these(I also enjoy those little fellas.)
what's the sound signatue on the rb42's. I almost pulled the trigger on those but they've been reviewed so much I wanted to do something different. I just have a hard time believing they can sound balanced with such a small woofer.

This is a very 'colored' speaker. I don't think CA meant it to be detail and accurate. But they sure are enjoyable. It's one of those hate em or love em kind of speakers. I personally love them. One of my favorite for my office setup. They sound so different than most of the other offering on its price range. Delicious warm mid, rolled of high and the bass can go really low when placed properly. They play rock well and more forgiving of the source quality you are using. Sound stage and especially panning will depends a lot on your room setup, because in my room I find the sound stage is pretty decent. I agree about the price though, should be priced around $200-$250. I would recommend anyone who is planning to buy to listen to them before buying.
I'm glad you enjoy them. I did too. I just have heard that are more detailed while maintaining a more laid back sound signature. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
"Wherever I May Roam" is a great option, but here's a pointer: Karnivool is absolutely amazing for testing speakers. Just signed up for some Amazon HD using your link. So I checked out the DAC in my 636 I think it supports hi res. However I’m trying to figure out if I am getting hi res from the app I have on my tv. Trying to learn all this stuff can be trying. Anyway another great video and an adorable sponsor!
From your tv it will depend. For example, I can run amazon music on my apple tv but it doesn't play in high res. Actually it doesn't even indicate what bit rate or sample rate it's being played at. If your dac supports that it may indicate. On a computer you have to go into the sound settings and set the resolution on the device itself. Through a computer or app on a tv style of a video streamer chances are you won't be able to do that. I'll have to play around with a dac hooked directly to a tv and see what I discover. I'll do some homework on that for you.

Great review.Very useful tips about close to the wall positioning! Most people do not have a room just for hi fi, so they do not know how their speakers will sound near the back wall ....Ι prefer speakers with rolled off highs like elac debut b6 original, istead of speakers with bright fatiguing highs.
I've looked at those more than once. Joe n Tell and Zeos both have very high praise for them and I don't know if I could add much more. They're definitely on my short list. I reviewed a set of Miccas that I didn't particularly care for but the Neumi BS5's I really like and I think it's the same manufacturer. It's the same distributor at least
@@cheapaudioman Thanks, you would think most front ported speakers would be fine against a wall, but that is not what i have read from other reviewers. Guess it can be a bit of trial and error. Also, Cambridge Audio has a smaller rear ported speaker called the Minx XL. @ 299.00 , it a sexy little guy
@@steventsimtsos4029 I saw that too. This whole thing is trial and error and it sometimes is frustrating for consumers. The Elac debut b5.2 is also a very good front ported speaker as well. Actually tuned to be a little bassist than the 6.2
@@cheapaudioman Randy, just confirmed that the SX60 that you reviewed is the old version, the new version is in matt black and they use a new Tweeter, Woofer, Crossover and cabinet construction.
I listen in at least 2 different spaces. My office/music room and my bedroom and sometimes the living room. I don’t normally get in to that because I’ve actually never found my opinion to really change regardless of the space. I’ve got a pair of little towers in that I’ll probably do in the living room. Great point though because it really can change the sound.
I'm just trying out speakers that I've considered purchasing for myself and then sharing my thoughts. For me, I know that I wished this information existed when I was shopping for speakers. Still a fun journey thought.
Cambridge Audio makes some terrible speakers. I bought the SX-60, only to find that the stuffing inside the speaker wasn't glued onto the sides and was plugging the bass reflex port - on both speakers. Had to open them both up to fix them, only to be disappointed by sub-par sound. I bought some of their Scirocco S-30's some years earlier, and those are absolutely fantastic speakers.

Was wondering if you plan to do a subwoofer review soon, also maybe a little tutorial on placing and getting the sub to sound just right with your speakers...I've always found that part to be a little difficult for some reason. As always, great review and look forward to the next one! - Cheers,Ron
paired these up with the Cambridge Audio CXA80 and the sound is not good seems there is no base and the treble is far too bright for my liking this is played completly flat luckly enough i only payed £100 for them on ebay but have to say not liking them atall. i also pared them with the S.M.S.L DA-9 and again very bright to my ear with poor sound. Also tried them with a rotel a11 they did sound better and base was heared this time but again poor to listen too for more than 30 mins they tire you out and left with ringing ears. Cambridge do great amps and have had many over the years because they offer great british sound that i like but seems these speakers are not british sounding what so ever. Im guessing these will be more suited for a cinema setup and prob what they were intended for.
It's a bit bright on the top end and can cause a significant amount of fatigue over long periods of time. Beautiful to look at but can be hard to listen to.
Cambridge audio, probably heard of them, they've making high quality crap for a long time. no I don't mean to poke fun what I am basically saying is in my experience with Cambridge audio they make great lovely sounding gear except for I have never owned a piece of their equipment in any shape or form that has held up longer than a year. so I gave up on them a long time ago and said screw it.
@@cheapaudioman That's why I build my own i.e. DIY speakers tuned to my musical tastes, also when my taste changes I can change the Freq response or drivers or speakers topology, etc, very flexible the results the speakers are dirt cheap so my philosophy is similar to yours.

Through a computer or app on a tv style of a video streamer chances are you won't be able to do that. I'll have to play around with a dac hooked directly to a tv and see what I discover. I'll do some homework on that for you.
@@cheapaudioman Might make for a video if you want to get into some How to stuff. I feel like you would be able to explain things in a way just about anyone can understand. Cheers.
luv yer laid back wayz. curious tho if when you compare speaks do you listen to one right next to / after the other (sounds touching)? or going off memory/bias etc. thank you for any deeets.
I've wanted to know how this one faired. cool
Great review.Very useful tips about close to the wall positioning! Most people do not have a room just for hi fi, so they do not know how their speakers will sound near the back wall ....Ι prefer speakers with rolled off highs like elac debut b6 original, istead of speakers with bright fatiguing highs.
b6 is one of my all time favorite speakers
review the micca rb42 and lets find out what all the hype is about with those
I've looked at those more than once. Joe n Tell and Zeos both have very high praise for them and I don't know if I could add much more. They're definitely on my short list. I reviewed a set of Miccas that I didn't particularly care for but the Neumi BS5's I really like and I think it's the same manufacturer. It's the same distributor at least
Happened to notice that Amazon has the Paradigm Atom SE for $238.50. Just sayin'...😊
I better get on that
Hey Randy, curious as to what some of your favorite bookshelf speakers that can be placed closed to a back wall ?
Elac debut b6.2’s are hard to beat up against a wall.
Actually tuned to be a little bassist than the 6.2
I asked my wife for SX50's for Christmas, building a small system for my home office.
man, I don't want to rain on your party - but if you can, get the Emotiva Airmotiv B1+ - a much, much better speaker for about 30 bucks more:)
I second that. They're incredible emotiva.com?aff=9
@@decoryder I want the laidback smooth sound. Just for ambient music.
@@cheapaudioman Randy, just confirmed that the SX60 that you reviewed is the old version, the new version is in matt black and they use a new Tweeter, Woofer, Crossover and cabinet construction.
@@thomasward00 I'd love to hear the new one. Seems odd thought that it's still marketed under the same model number.

Wonder how long till that flimsy card table takes a dive?
We have a newer and more robust table that will take a dive soon
Acoustics is SOO room dependent, can we see your listening space?
I listen in at least 2 different spaces. My office/music room and my bedroom and sometimes the living room. I don’t normally get in to that because I’ve actually never found my opinion to really change regardless of the space. I’ve got a pair of little towers in that I’ll probably do in the living room. Great point though because it really can change the sound.
@@cheapaudioman Yeah more or less mostly bass(base?) that changes.
Aperion Audio Novus could be another one for you to check. maybe the good guys from Aperion could send a pair your way...
I’ll check them out.
still no amazon hd in eu
That stinks. Sorry, man. I think quobuz does a pretty good job and is available over there.
@@cheapaudioman tidal too.
is this a nice way to say these speakers are not good or is it a way to advertise speakers you don t like so much?
I'm just trying out speakers that I've considered purchasing for myself and then sharing my thoughts. For me, I know that I wished this information existed when I was shopping for speakers. Still a fun journey thought.
can you do something with that buzz in the sound of your videos?
No buzzing sound this way!
@@codychavarria6088 hmm, i hear a “zzzz”
@@valeccylinder8703 my side, is clear as day
@@phantasm1004 sorry, i hear it clearly, checked on several devices
Cambridge Audio makes some terrible speakers. I bought the SX-60, only to find that the stuffing inside the speaker wasn't glued onto the sides and was plugging the bass reflex port - on both speakers. Had to open them both up to fix them, only to be disappointed by sub-par sound. I bought some of their Scirocco S-30's some years earlier, and those are absolutely fantastic speakers.
Yeah... they're ok but that's about it.
@@cheapaudioman Great work btw, much appreciated. Bought a Pair of Elac Debut Reference speakers today based on your review.
@@decoryder they’re so lovely. My favorite speaker.
@@cheapaudioman Besides the SX-60's, I have or have had:
ELAC B6 2.0
Klipsch RP-600m's
KEF q100
KEF q150

Wharfedale Diamond 225
Emotiva Airmotiv B1+
Dynaudio M20
Dynaudio Excite x14
Polk S-15
Energy RC-10
Boston Acoustics A26
Cambridge Audio S-30
... a few others I can't remember:)
Yes, I agree - the Debut Reference are EXCEPTIONAL. So far, the best I've heard.
@@decoryder Hey Deco, I have the S30s and absolutely love them but have always regretted not getting the RC-10s too. Would you say they have a similar sound?
Is there any difference within this version and the newer model?
Newegg has the pioneer Andrew Jones line for 74$ a pair
I bought a pair.
Man, I loooovve free range Pomeranians, they're delicious! ....Great review of those, I have always heard that Cambridge Audio, much like the Wharfedales of old, Emerald 93's and speakers in that lineup, have always had a rolled off high end, almost veiled for some reason, dang Brits!
Was wondering if you plan to do a subwoofer review soon, also maybe a little tutorial on placing and getting the sub to sound just right with your speakers...I've always found that part to be a little difficult for some reason. As always, great review and look forward to the next one! - Cheers,Ron
Me thinks you and Z would make for a very entertaining co-review...Although dogs and cats may not be the best mix :)
Ha. Chewbacca looks like lively quadruped
oh noo!! 😘
Hmm. Gotta question why someone would have a large painting of a hog tied woman on his wall...
paired these up with the Cambridge Audio CXA80
and the sound is not good
seems there is no base and the treble is far too bright for my liking
this is played completly flat
luckly enough i only payed £100 for them on ebay but have to say not liking them atall.
i also pared them with the S.M.S.L DA-9 and again very bright to my ear with poor sound.
Review the dog.
Free range ARE better!!!
Hahahaha hilarious intro
Cheap speakers that sound cheap.
They’re not even that cheap compared to their competition.
@@cheapaudioman That's why I build my own i.e. DIY speakers tuned to my musical tastes, also when my taste changes I can change the Freq response or drivers or speakers topology, etc, very flexible the results the speakers are dirt cheap so my philosophy is similar to yours.
