We suddenly have a baby in the house and my RC70's are NOT low level speakers...I cant believe I nailed it on the first try. These speakers sound huge!
Enjoyed this review, but I beg to differ on the Sony SS-CS5 comment.........I think they sound great in a small room (13'x13'). The Cambridge speakers look a lot like the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 ($257/pair on Amazon!); a comparison of those two would be interesting..........

First time catching one of your reviews. Well done. I bought a pair for my son for Christmas. One nit to pick. I’ve been at this audio business for about 50 years and have never run into any kind of equipment, electronics, speakers, even cables, that won’t improve with a burn in of at least 24 hours. I wonder if the difference between the 41 Hz spec, and the 50-60 Hz you hear in the demo might, in part, be attributable to that? I’m not used to Cambridge overstating their specs … a conservative company.
Loved this review and take on the "surprise factor". And was so happy that Kristi went out of the box to rave for a second on the Magats. There is something to the idea of someone encountering your system and saying "what the heck is THAT, did you get it at a garage sale?" and then it just kicks butt and is a ton of fun to listen to.
Hi, thanks for being there! I have to apologize to Kristi for misspelling her name, I just didn’t know the proper spelling at the time. OK, I just love the way you folks discuss the gear, you are very enlightening. Here’s my take; I have a small study, actually a third bedroom that has been converted to a study with a couch that can be expanded for grandchildren who visit. If there was no difference between a $16000 speakers to mop the floor with these, it would be my tears that i would be mopping if i spent that. Thanks for your view Andrew and Kirsty no less. My set arrived today and I agree with you both. The bass is enough for me in general, it’s clean and precise and as far as body goes then my Wharfedale 12.2 certainly have more of that down below but these are brand new out of the box today so they need around 30-100 hours before they settle and loosen up a little which if anyone reads Cambridge’s own ‘philosophy’ on this then you will find they do indicate that the bass will ‘improve’ over time, I say improve but I actually mean accumulate a little more extension as the cones loosen, it’s already a nice bass as is. I agree with everything else in regards to vocals, clarity and general sound. Currently £165 in the UK and so I struck the iron while hot and for what I will be using these for am glad I did. Update: After using the SX-60 for around a week I find them a very entertaining speaker, lively and realistic. They are better for Home Theatre or a 2.1 front room sound than for a dedicated music speaker imo. They are a good all rounder but they don’t beat my Wharfedale 12.2 for music, the 12.2 soundstage is something else but then I prefer the SX-60 for TV and general listening. So for TV, general audio convenience I would certainly go for the SX-60 and have but for music only I would and have, go for the WD 12.2…imo…the SX-60 don’t have the intimacy of the 12.2…that’s all I am going to say, other than I still own a pair of Cambridge Audio SL30 (Sirocco Ultima biwire) which I am also not selling, those are 15 years old now and in my opinion better than the Minx XL more neutral but not quite as good as the SX-60 mk2 for vocals.
Thank you again to Andover for sponsoring today's video. Support like this really helps the channel grow so we hope you'll show your support to those who help lift up the community! You can check out their new turntable here: bit.ly/3CIeqMk 😍
It's actually a pretty easy turntable to love/use. I really like the look of it, and the OM10 cartridge is a budget favorite of mine ever since I had one on my vintage Technics. The auto start/stop and return feature of the Max is GREAT for listening to records in the background (obviously you can listen critically too 😉).
My fav budget piece that I've purchased this year is JBL Stage A130 speakers. They sound good with about every piece of gear I use, and aren't too fussy about the room layout.
I know they have been reviewed before in other places but with a budget minded speakers in review today, I would suggest doing a review on the Sony SSCS5 three Way bookshelf speaker. I was shocked on how well the speakers sounded for the price!
@@KristiWright how about a review comparing those Sony speakers with other ones that you guys are more inclined to enjoy so that the viewers can have insight as to why you guys don’t like them?
@@Feliciano12v They said the Sony speakers are thin in sound, piercing, have weak and flabby bass response, and respond poorly to medium-high to high volumes; moreover, they reported that they are built cheaply, while looking and feeling appropriate to that cheapness. I think that if they've reviewed a speaker on this channel whatsoever, it can be assumed it's vastly superior to the Sony loudspeakers!
I'm not sure where the line of demarcation exists on what constitutes "budget", but as for my personal experience, I have a 3-way tie: SVS Prime Bookshelves; Outlaw RR2160(I don't know if 999 is budget but the unit has a great feature set and sounds pretty good); and the Bluesound node. I couldn't give a fair assessment of the Prime bookshelves since my only major experience with speakers in the last 20 years has been with Klipsch, SVS, and Emotiva. For 500 a pair (a little higher now) I was impressed by the build quality and the sound. With all that said, If the 3000 micro is considered a budget sub, then that's my pick for the best budget product this year.
Love hearing about budget options that punch above their weight, and appreciate all the comparisons. If I ever swap my soundbar for a 2.1 set up I would want something with high intelligibility, like Kristi I like to have clear dialogue (one character always mutters followed by loud music which bursts your ear drums lol)
I had a pair of Cambridge speakers. Cost me 170 bucks in 2007 and they were great. Sold them many years ago but for the price they were very good. Especially with acoustic music.
Always a good day when A&K release a new video. Quality budget gear makes me smile cuz it offers the opportunity for more folks to be introduced to hifi (or perhaps, midfi). More enthusiasts can only be a good thing. I'm going in a different direction with your question of the day. For me, this year has been one of used CDs. One can't get more "budget" than that. I've been able to grab a lot of discs from the 70s and 80s for about half the usual price. And they sound from not bad to stellar. Some have been remastered, others have not. I see you almost had to bleep Kristi, not once but twice! :) That's OK. We all know that feeling and love it. It's like opening your favourite gift on Christmas morning.
I bought the Jamo S801 powered speakers for my step son and they are fantastic for the price. They are easy to use, can grow with him and sound fantastic. All for $179. Can’t be beat, imo
I thought I’d found a reason to replace my current speakers (I’m old) until you mentioned needing a sub to go with. Remember Polk 5jr’s? 6 in mid, 6 in bass reflex and tweeter on top? These are still my current pair and they’re showing no signs of laying down. Great review and something to think about for the future.
Can’t beat a speaker bargain gem. I remember buying a pair of Kef Cresta 2s for my younger brother for less than £100 and I loved them. And free grills, win win..
I have the SX-60. I like it so much that it made me bought the SX-80, which sadly, doesn't have the same magic as SX-60. It's strange that Cambridge Audio made SX-50, SX-60 and SX-80 have different characters. SX-80 is just balanced and boring, while SX-60 has that colored magical midrange. It's not trying to be accurate, but it sure sounds good. Electric guitar and drums sounds so delicious. I consider myself more of a jazz man, but I sure enjoy Rock better from this speaker. And about the bass, maybe because you didn't wait for the speaker to break in. Because I find the the SX-60 actually have more bass than most bookshelf speakers. With proper placement it does go really deep.
This video was very fun to watch. The banter between the both of you is exquisite and it is always good to have a slightly divergent view on a topic! I do not have a favorite budget product because I didn't have the chance to listen to any one of them. Thanks ! See you later!
Thanks for all the great recommendations! I finally pulled the trigger on a technics SU-g700 and sl1500c to revamp my 2channel system and I'm in absolute awe at the design and sound. Your detailed reviews were a huge help 🙏🏻
@@erics.4113 You know, I'm not sure if it's available for purchase yet. Sadly, Technics isn't sending it for review so you'll have to read the print mags to find anything out about it.
Q Acoustics Concept 300s are my favourite bookshelf speakers, although you're really supposed to mount them on those amazing stands. There are so many good bookshelfs under a grand but when you hear the 300s it's a different class.
First off, I really enjoy your reviews. For the 2021 year the most enjoyable budget items I have used were the Jamo Concert Series speakers. To the point that I have purchased the C9 ii Center, and c93 ii Bookshelf Speakers. Soon I will purchase the C95 ii towers as well. Keep up the great job that you and Kristi are doing.
Hey Andrew & Kristi. Thanks for another great review. I noticed that you were using the rubber feet on your Solidsteel SS-6 stands rather than the spikes. I just bought a pair of those, and one of the feet was damaged and missing the rubber. When I asked Solidsteel for a replacement, they told me that they were there as shipping protectors and not meant to be feet and that I needed to buy their speaker pads (for an additional $99) and use the spikes. This was confusing since I had seen a video produced by Solidsteel where the owner of the company specifically said they are feet, as well as numerous reviewers like yourself using them as feet. I have soft pine floors in my room so I was planning on using them. The US distributor told me that they aren't sure if they can get me a replacement, which seems odd. I was admittedly snarky with him, but it was a little disappointing after spending a lot on the stands. Don't get me wrong, their obvious overall quality is readily apparent and I absolutely love them, but it left me scratching my head.
Great weekend tweaking the home theater speaker setup to accommodate new Sony X90j. Im happy. Moved front and center closer and did room correction to adjust. Wow my speakers were too far away before. And now im enjoying hdr on the video end. May even stream my first movie?
@@KristiWright i could go on and on. Also moved my oppo bdp 105 bluray player up to the stereo setup with the newly repaired 1978 Sony StrV5 receiver. The 32 bit sabre ees dacs on the analog output paired with the sony has made cds sound better than ive ever heard. The home theater had the ultra hd player now, and didnt need it anymore. Man. So much testing to do with music and movies. Cheers to you both! Great sunday
I had these speakers - be aware these have HARDCORE quality control issues - I ordered two sets, both arrived with the acoustic stuffing plugging the base reflex port, they were simply not glued in properly - on BOTH sets.
Great video. Good sound doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Now for something off topic. At 2:30 mark in this video, shown on the TV was a picture of a jazz musician. Any info on that pic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Sounds like this speaker needs to be compared to the Monolith B6 model. Size and price are in the same neighborhood. Let's see who can pick that VS up for the consumers. Thanks for this review
My buy of the year is my little budget system for my sitting room. SVS Soundbase feeding Cambridge Audio Minx XLs with matching X300 sub. It's WAY better than $1,000 should ever sound. Many similar attributes to what you describe with the SX60s
Hello, I just bought a pair of SX-60 speakers, now I just need an amplifier to pair with my Alva Duo preamplifier, where I can connect it to my Audio Technica AT-LP7 turntable. Regarding the amplifier, which Cambridge amplifier is best suited for the SX-60 speakers? I'm thinking about the Cambridge AXR85 or AXR100, keeping all the components in one brand (except the turntable), both of which have a phono input, although I won't need to use this input, as I prefer to use the Alva Duo externally, where sound quality will be a priority. That said, would either of these amplifiers work for me to use with the SX-60 speakers?
Great speakers indeed. Very balanced from the first listen. Easy on the ear, good very good bass, transparent and neutral mids with no boxiness at all. And very three dimensional in terms of deep soundstage. What could be better? Bass could be more musical keeping the great punch it already has, midrange could have more body and be more colorful especially in violins flutes etc. But then, maybe we would go to an upper category, I think
Try the Klipsch RP-500m, and/0r Wharfdale Diamond 12.1. I think better all rounder and more balanced than the Klipsch 600m. Feels like smaller woofers make adding a sub an easier integration, if more bass is needed. great review...
My favourite relatively budget speakers are the Warfedale Diamond 12.4 Light Oak finish, but I'll be getting the 12.3, just on pure asceticism alone, they've won my heart, their's something about the castle turret like appearance that I can't escape, your review of the Hecco 700 nearly made me change my mind, the Hecco's probably have the sound im after, but I feel the Warfedale sound I will learn to love more and more overtime, kind of like getting to know a good friend better over time. Keep up the good work Guy's, great reviews 👍 👏 👌.
My favorite budget product that I picked up this year was the loxjie a30 amp. That little thing really blew my mind at its price. Last year, the Sound Artist SA 200IA integrated amp.
Ok I'm trusting you two on this. I don't expect much at this price point but I just blew 400.00 on a pair of Polk's that are so shrill and fatiguing that I'm giving them away because I feel guilty asking for money. I'm sure these will sound a little better at least.
Well, before it went tits up, the Boyuu Yulu M2 single ended EL-34 tube intergrated would have been my choice. For just a bit north of $200 with shipping, it made magic with the Tekton Mini Lores(which themselves are a bargain but maybe not a full budget item). I’m almost tempted to give the nod to the Focusrite Scarlett series of audio interfaces. In fact I’m more than tempted, that’s my budget pick. I have the Scarlett 8i6(I needed the spdif in)but you could go with whatever model suits your needs. What you get is a very nice sounding Dac, an ADC for digitizing your analog sources, multiple analog and digital ins and outs(depending on model), headphone amp(kinda meh to me but ymmv)all switchable and volume controlled. It would be a fine hifi preamp/DAC as long as you had a computer as a source. The 8i6 currently retails for $299.
Nice review ... I think a lot of people don't buy speakers from primarily audio amp manufacturers because they think they don't know how to make good ones. Yamaha, Onkyo, Sony all make decent speakers but none are really known for them. One aside note, I hope one day you can review the HECO bookshelves at $399/pair. Been interested in them since your tower review and I think those bookshelves might be something special. Of course they are not available for months now.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I was blown away by the sub, I have two subs, I use it all for my music and home theater, I bought mine in 2019 for £170.00 for the speakers, £150.00 for the sub, all new, also it looks like Cambridge audio have made cutbacks on the logo, mine are chrome badges, now there just printed on, I think I got the better deal 😀 great video 👍
Love your videos. I really appreciate the amount of work you put into making them with so much passion and enthusiasm. I have bought some of the products you’ve reviewed with the Tannoy Gold 7s being my most recent purchase and I absolutely love them! Keep at it man ✊🏻
Great review! I have the same issue as Kristi…always asking my wife “what did they say?”. In fact we usually keep the closed caption on :( However...Lumina 1s to the rescue. Ordered them a week ago. Those with a sub I’m hoping will do the trick.
I just ran across a Emotiva video from 7 years ago that had you in it. Now I understand. This begs the question why there are no Emotiva products in your system. Maybe I just missed those videos as I'm a recent watcher of your content.
His view on it's performance is opposite to what you have said, just now. I find( looks like) that his version has a different front baffle. Hence the confusion.
I'm not sure if there has been an update or not. These are the SX-60s that CA currently sells and they came direct from the manufacturer. As far any difference in opinion reviewer to reviewer, that I can't explain. People hear and interpret differently.
Have you ever listened to HSU subwoofers and bookshelf speakers? I have looked at your library of content, I haven't seen anything on Marantz receivers. And also, where do you put the Reference R-26FA Dolby Atmos Floor standing Speakers in reference to others in their class.
These are close IMO but the Bronze have more bass. If I wanted to build a home theater system, I’d get the MA. Otherwise, I’d be more than happy with these.
Hi have you ever tested two original HomePods with the newer capabilities and software? I am surprised by the extended bass response and atmos delivery. The new Disney Billie Elish concert movie sounds pretty big.
Had to rewatch the video again, this time skipping the multitasking part on my end. Though it was an easy miss since the audiolab was mentioned in passing as the highlighted amps were the Cambridge, MSI, and Parasound. Nice to know this still sounded good with the audiolab. The best part was the "not needing to do a double take on conversations" when watching movies
I can't take my eyes off the tower speakers + centre channel in the background with yellow drivers they look so cool ! I kinda also love how they match up with Andrew's clothes. 😂 PS : loved the review as always 🔥
Interesting video! I've always loved Cambridge products. I think they recently released their flagship speakers the Evo S, which are relatively affordable, at $750. But, strangely, online reviews on those are virtually non-existent. I would gladly give them a try if my home didn't already look like a hi-fi store lol
So happy to know you are enjoying these! You'll find a list of amps that we paired with these speakers in the description. Any of them would be great options.
I’ve got two SX-60s plumbed into my new Bluesound Powernode, system sounds fabulous to me, but I’m no expert. Ordered the Cambridge Sub-woofer yesterday, I’m interested in what difference a sub will make, if any. Really wish Bluesound made a nice smooth volume knob, that’s my only gripe.
Hi, guys! Have you compared the Q Acoustics 3030i against the 3010i that you mention here? They might be a more relevant comparison with the Cambridge. Certainly the Q Acoustics are nowhere near as ugly.
Very nice review of a quality budget speaker. Thank you both. I'm hopeful that the upcoming Hint 6 review will include evaluating it's sound with higher end speakers ( $3-8 k). Additionally, a comparison between the hint 6 vs. Musical Fidelity Ms5 would be ideal ( I know the Ms6 is the actual price equivalent, but with no added features not worth the price increase over the Ms5). I look forward to your evaluation.
Likely pretty well, though you may want to look at a budget Class A/B amp to inject a bit of sweetness to the top end. That soft dome plus Class D may come off as mildly sterile to some listeners, just something to maybe be aware of. But will the A50 drive 'em? Yes.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews thanks for the quick reply, in terms of a integrated amp with a digital (preferably optical) in as well as another source would you have any other recommendations?

My personal favorite budget product this year is the x90j. It delivers great performance and fit our space and budget well.
oooh good pick!
Man, I have really been fighting the urge to get into vinyl. I'm sure I would enjoy it, just don't have the time or space at present.

Thanks for the response and support Kristi and Andrew!
My fav budget piece that I've purchased this year is JBL Stage A130 speakers. They sound good with about every piece of gear I use, and aren't too fussy about the room layout.
I would like to get a feel of a comparison between the JBL stage A130 and these. I think that I will have to hear the 2 of them.
I know they have been reviewed before in other places but with a budget minded speakers in review today, I would suggest doing a review on the Sony SSCS5 three Way bookshelf speaker. I was shocked on how well the speakers sounded for the price!
Andrew talks about the Sony speakers in this review. We sent them back choosing not to review them.
The SVS Micro is so good!
@@KristiWright So good that I want a second one, even though I'm probably good with one.
Commercials are especially bad offenders when it comes to jumps in volume. Thanks for watching!
We're huge fans of Jamo. Glad to know you are enjoying yours.
That's a GREAT set up! Enjoy it!!
You bought WELL Robber. I'd say you just scooped up a forever setup! Enjoy!
Oooo you got the integrated that I'm really curious about. If I'm not mistaken there is a mk2 design that just came out or is already available?
@@erics.4113 You know, I'm not sure if it's available for purchase yet. Sadly, Technics isn't sending it for review so you'll have to read the print mags to find anything out about it.
My dad has the SX-50’s and they are awesome as well. Great speakers and Cambridge audio make good gear.
Good to know that. I'm thinking about buying a pair of SX-50.
The amount of these I used to sell at richer sounds great little speaker great review Andrew keep up the hard work and merry Xmas from the uk
thank you so much Adam!
Have fun!! We just watched the new(ish) Marvel movie Ten Rings (or whatever it's called) and it was so much fun!!

Nice list of comparison.
Good job you two
Thank you so much, Jack Finks! We appreciate you watching.
Great video. Good sound doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Now for something off topic. At 2:30 mark in this video, shown on the TV was a picture of a jazz musician. Any info on that pic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
We used an app for the art in this video. If you hit pause, you should be able to see the artist's name.
I agree with what Kristi said about the Klipsch 600m’s. I actually replaced my ones with the 5000f’s which sound much better in every way.
Can’t wait for the Parasound Hint 6 review!!!
I had the sx50 once. They had the least bass I’ve ever owned in a speaker, they were very very sweet and delicate sounding though which was nice.
Thanks for sharing!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks for entertaining us with all the videos you two keep banging out! 👍🏻
Great review!!! You sold me on them just bought the pair.
I have SX50s and love them.
The AXR100 would be a great choice. Sticking to Cambridge Audio will make it very aesthetically pleasing.
I really want that jazz art in the background lol
Great informative video.Bravo to you Andrew who put Christi in the world of hi fi !!Well done Christi.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video guys. Always looking forward on your next video and you guys never disappoint us. Beautiful speakers by the way.
Thank you, Jonathan!
My short list for soundbar replacement: Cambridge SX-60, Kanto YU 5.24, or Q Acoustics Q3020i.
Any word on the EVO S speakers? Is it double plus good? It’s double the price.
Feels like smaller woofers make adding a sub an easier integration, if more bass is needed. great review...
which would you pick between the Kanto YU6 or the SX-60?
Powered vs passive = too many different variables.
The YU6 are worth it. Andrew's review of them is spot on
My favourite relatively budget speakers are the Warfedale Diamond 12.4 Light Oak finish, but I'll be getting the 12.3, just on pure asceticism alone, they've won my heart, their's something about the castle turret like appearance that I can't escape, your review of the Hecco 700 nearly made me change my mind, the Hecco's probably have the sound im after, but I feel the Warfedale sound I will learn to love more and more overtime, kind of like getting to know a good friend better over time.
Keep up the good work Guy's, great reviews 👍 👏 👌.
My favorite budget product that I picked up this year was the loxjie a30 amp. That little thing really blew my mind at its price. Last year, the Sound Artist SA 200IA integrated amp.
Thanks for answering our QOTD!
I have SX50 and Minx XL bookshelves, love them.
The Sony STR-DN1080 av receiver was my best buy for 2021👍👍
How is the music audio quality on that receiver in your opinion?
Great content, as always! Would LOVE a review on the Evo S speakers and how it pairs with the Evo 75 amp
Yeah Ive been looking for a review of these too, can't find one anywhere
I have those speakers with the Cambridge audio subwoofer, works great for me, great video 👍
I bet. I was curious about the sub. It's not the most powerful sub on the market but it looks nice and tidy. Plus, $299 is hard to beat.
Would you recommend them for side and rear surround use? Close to the walls. I have Kef Q350/650C as fronts but want something cheaper for surrounds.
For surround duty these would totally work. You may even consider the smaller and cheaper SX50s.
Thanks for adding the Hint 6 in the review equation. It's nice to know if budget speakers can play nice upstream.
I'm curious how you would compare these to the Wharfedale Evo 4.1s.
How did these compare to the new Monitor Audio Bronze 100s? I know the MAs are considerably more but just curious.
I was thinking the same

Is your SX 60 different from the sx60 that Randy had reviewed last year? I am confused.I have been using their S 30 since 2012 (on & off, though)
I don't believe they are different...what are you confused about? More info would better help us help you :).
@@andrewrobinsonreviews The SX50 and 60 we're re designed a couple years ago... They changed from Wood vinyl to Black.

These are close IMO but the Bronze have more bass. If I wanted to build a home theater system, I’d get the MA. Otherwise, I’d be more than happy with these.

Hi, do you think the SX60 speakers are better than the KEF Q350?
Any chance you got to play with these speakers driven by the audiolab?
Please watch the review.

But, strangely, online reviews on those are virtually non-existent. I would gladly give them a try if my home didn't already look like a hi-fi store lol
I saw the Evo S too, and I'm not sure (don't hold me to this) if they're in the US yet? But they look like mildly more upscale versions of the SX-60.

Parasound amps are really good - very powerful with some warmth on the top end. Ideal for more forward speakers like Klipsch.
How do you think these would pair with the Arylic A50+?
I think they'd do great. BTW, Arylic is running BFS right now: bit.ly/3p0sMSJ
Likely pretty well, though you may want to look at a budget Class A/B amp to inject a bit of sweetness to the top end. That soft dome plus Class D may come off as mildly sterile to some listeners, just something to maybe be aware of. But will the A50 drive 'em? Yes.
