  • This video is a response to many questions I have had relating to the Ozpig and rust over time. Notice in the video that some sections of flue are rusty while others are not. Also notice the door isn't rusted. It has not been left out in the weather, its been in the shed or under the patio!
    Thanks for watching!

Anything steel will rust in contact with air. This can be delayed with a rub down of oil before firing up in order to season it. The oil polymerizes and provides a shield. It should be wiped down with an oily cloth before every use to maintain and build the protection. Also covered when not in use if left outside

Probably a wipe down once or twice a month with some cooking oil might have slowed or stopped that from happening.

I recently purchased the bigpig. Used it a few times under cover, never got wet but it's started to rust between the chimney and the hot plate. Look like the rust spots may have been under the paint before it was first used. :(

Yeah they do all rust, the heat will burn off the paint too. Get a cheap can of canola oil spray and spray it with oil when the pig starts to cool. The surface rust isn’t really a big deal other than the looks. I don’t paint mine, just spray with canola oil when I remember and it’s still going strong .

@@aussieoutdoorreviews I have used canola oil. It seems to leave an orange colour to the pig. Kind of like rust but I'm not sure if it is actual rust or the canola oil that has burnt. Next time I fire it up as a heater I'll try another type of oil. I've heard flaxseed is good.
