Every time i was in singapore i visited this mysterious shop without fail and left intrigued without knowing what and whether i should get one of these masterpieces - i often saw this lady working on some pieces and thought of properly photographing the processes but never did - i am very glad CNA did this documentary. Its an art that should never be forgotton. I hope the next generation keeps it going without mutating it.

Be more mindful and sensitive about the dress code when doing this type of religion related documentaries/shows.
Nonetheless, this episode is an informative one. Hopefully this precious heritage and traditiobn will continue to last for generations to come.

Yes, that was not proper attire at all for this type of piece. Very disrespectful.

Since when did Taoism care about dress codes ? Don’t push your way of thinking in the name of religion.

The comment in the video on wanting to make figurines not for traditional praying but for secular use, as a way for people to connect with the qualities that they associate with the characters of the figurines, I think is a great idea for making it more relevant to more people. Just like how people keep a figurine of a super hero. If they do come up with this type of figurines, I would be very keen to get one.

So interesting but let down by choice of host. Putting aside talk of things like decency, it didn’t occur to her to wear something more appropriate and respectful? It boggles the mind to think that she was handling effigies and flouncing around with exaggerated facial expressions. Would it have been acceptable if she had visited a church or a mosque? Steve Chia any day please.

This is an amazing episode of introducing heritage businesses in Singapore. However I do think the chances of effigy making skill to be passed down to the next generation is very slim.

This host is... CMI... Nobody knows, much less remember, your photos from more than half a decade ago... But this Ng Tze Yong is insanely articulate, he's definitely a very convincing champion for the dying artform.

In the West we have university courses with a degree for Artist Makers surely the university of Singapore should have such a course and graduates interested in effigy production? This art is so beautiful and as an important part of the culture cannot be permitted to die.

How interesting! Here in some of the antique shops and museums in Europe, one can find many of these very interesting historical objects that command very high prices! Will definitely visit the shop when I next visit Singapore - totally original!

This is a great story and found the content very interesting. I am not Singaporean, so I am not sure what is “normal” attire for journalists. I have never seen a journalist in the US wear similar outfits as this reporter did in her first 2 outfits. Especially when discussing deity and religion related topics. Not a prude…just find it interesting how things are done in other parts of the world.

Actually is disrespectful of her to dress up like that. Yes, Singapore is a modern city but she does not represent our true oriental culture.

    • @ABC-ed8cg
      @ABC-ed8cg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think she tries too hard to look modern and sexy by showing excessive amount of skin. I see a lot of short ladies try too hard like her cos they don’t have long legs so they have to show skin in other ways e.g. midriff, or wear super short to overcompensate.
She also has extremely thick makeup and over-the-top hairstyle to make up for ordinary looks. It screams ‘insecurity’. She should just be herself. She hosts fine. She should build inner confidence instead of seeking attention through attire.

I love CNA insider for all your introspective and eyeopening videos. This was a great one too! But this host... unfortunately clothes maketh the (wo)man, this is very unlike CNA insider to not vet through your host's decorum before placing them in front of the camera. while you are trying to attract the tiktok kids, don't forget us millennials - bad hosting turns us off.. ("people pay respect to that one?" at 3.54 oh dear.. yikes)

Every statue/deity you see in public or in someone's house is created by somebody, it is not a easy task, likewise another simillar job to effigy making is a Footwear repairman.

    Answer to Arabic Reja-
Buddhist went EXTINCT in India in 12th C. Today Chinese Buddhism is a mix of Confucian, Taoist and Buddhism. This form has spread to Korea, Japan.Vietnam etc. Today, India has to look to ancient Chinese texts to understand the practices and culture of India's lost Buddhism.

It's along Neil Road and it's not a long road, maximum 1km stretch. Walk along it and you definitely find them. At the same time, you can see other interesting shops along this road.

An interesting topic but a horrid hostess. Not just the totally disrespectful attire but her flamboyant and annoying behavior. She might be ok for a music or bar review, but completely wrong for this.

Overcompensate for her ordinary looks. I don’t get it when she has to show so much skin and wear such thick makeup. Her hosting is fine. She just needs to be more confident instead of relying on attire to ‘seduce’ ppl. It really screams insecurity.
